Design Strategies

Designing for 100% comfortability. The top three strategies from the pyschometric chart (see page 14) are internal heat gain (44.6%), sun shading of windows (20.8%) and passive solar direct gain (22%). Other significant strategies include high thermal mass night flushed(15%), heating (17.6%), natural ventilation cooling (7.9%).

INTERNAL HEAT GAIN The Six was designed for maximum comfortable solar penetration which is a big factor in its heat gain. Solar panels heat the building’s water.

SUN SHADING OF WINDOWS The south windows are all shaded, while glazing on the west side is minimized. (See page 12.)

PASSIVE SOLAR DIRECT GAIN

The interior of The Six was planned and shapped to increase daylight and natural air distribution. Additionally, an array of solar panels take up 1/3 of the roof and provide energy for heating the building’s water. (See page 11.)

HIGH THERMAL MASS NIGHT FLUSHED The building’s circulation spaces is made with FSC-certified IPE wood screen shades for air circulation.

HEATING The building’s perimeter wall are filled with blown-in recycled cellulose insulation. The insulation, reduces thermal bridging and infilteration.

NATURAL VENTILATION COOLING The six was located and oriented for maximum expose to pervailing winds. The building was shapped to cause buoyancy for natural ventilation. Furthermore, the interior was shapped to increase natural ventilation throughout the building. Windows are designed and placed to maximize natural ventilation. (See page 10.)
