Reviving Our Shared Pasts

Mary Mailler Artistry Reviving Our Shared Pasts

About Me.... Thank you for your interest in my artwork and the themes that inspire me. I work as a fine artist and am currently exploring digital enhancement, illustration and collage. My themes usually involve abandoned, vintage, forgotten and revived imagery. I use textures and colors to evoke a feeling of longing for times past. I strive to communicate a sense of nastalgic familiarity so that my relationship with the viewer is one of confirmation for the beauty and validity of our shared pasts. My formal artistic training includes a number of fine arts courses completed in my early college years, a certificate in visual communications, and a completed master’s degree in communications (emphasis visual communications) and the ongoing pursuit of additional adult education courses in theater, fine arts and visual communications. I currently split my time between Tulsa, Oklahoma and Bangor, Maine; but I grew up in the woods and farmlands of Northern Maine and the quiet river valley towns of Western Massachusetts. I am inspired by the memories of my grandparent’s farm and from the way of life that my mother, aunts and uncles enjoyed growing up. My creative process involves the scanning of imagery from family photos, antique postcards, abandoned photos and ephemera purchased from auction sites and estate sales. The images are digitally composed over my own painted or photographed backgrounds and landscapes. Once the compositions are determined, I draw or paint digitally into the piece with a Wacom tablet to create more of the detail and mood of what I’m trying to convey. Finally, I use textural overlays and digital photo filters to enhance the image’s vintage appeal. When the image is completed, I bring a digital copy of it to a local custom printer who is well familiar with my color pallete choices and printing preferences. I hope you enjoy these works as I have enjoyed creating them. Do not forget that there is validity and beauty, still, in the people, places and things that others have left behind. Mary Mailler

hen my mother passed away a few years back, I inherited over a hundred years worth of family photos and memorabilia to sort through, organize, restore, digitalize and preserve. It was in discovering all of the work, the heartaches, sorrows and joys that my grandparents went through in raising their children that I discovered something worth saying out loud with my art. Once upon a time, there was a certain cadence, a certain peaceful and eloquent pace to the way we lived, the way we worked, traveled, and worshipped in this country. Long before the age of computers, SUVs and frustrating commutes back and forth to work that drains us, to communities we don’t care about, to houses and neighborhoods we have no real bond with, we shared a true sense of connection to the people who are gone now, to the places we left behind and to the things that no one seems to need or care about anymore.
