Acute Lower Back Pain - What Can You Do About It? Written By: Mary Ables
Have you been suffering from an acute lower back pain? Maybe you have overstretched your back muscles or ligaments due to some sudden, strenuous physical movements such as improperly lifting of a heavy object. I have suffered from a right side back pain. The pain is most severe immediately after the injury. But sometimes, it gets worse gradually over the next few hours. So, what can you do about your acute lower back pain? There are various options you can look at. But, the first thing you need to do is to determine how severe is your acute lower back ache. Do you need to see a doctor about this condition? You should consult one immediately if you experience numbness or having difficulty moving, are pregnant, are above 60 years old, or develop further conditions such as a severe headache or fever, and impairment or loss of bladder control. If your acute lower back pain is not so severe and does not result in further complications, then you can consider self-treatment at home. The first thing that many people would go for is a complete rest in bed. However, this may not be the best option. It is better to go about your normal daily activities, but at a slower pace. However, you must be careful to avoid what may have, in the first place, caused your back pain. Light activities will speed up the healing process. A little rest will do no harm, but avoid lying down for too long a time. You may want to use hot and cold compresses to help ease the acute lower back pain. Start with the cold compresses first. Wrap an ice pack with a thin piece of cloth and apply it to the affected area for about 20 minutes. Do this several times a day. This will reduce the swelling and inflammation, and slows down the nerve impulses at the injured area. Once the muscle spasms and acute pain subsided, you can use hot compresses to loosen the tight muscles. You may use a heating pad or taking a warn bath for this purpose. Exercise can help to prevent re-injury and avoid a recurrence of the acute lower back pain. Since most individuals are not aware of which exercise produces which effect on the various parts of body, it is advisable to seek a qualified instructor’s advice on the exercises that are suitable for your body, age and Acute Lower Back Pain Copyright 2010
