In 2015 I was commissioned by a group of young musicians to design the stage for their concert. I lowered the height of the ceiling with an arch in order to create an intimate space for the performer. Unlike the usual arrangements of piano on the concert stage, the piano was positioned so that the audience could have a feeling of presence in the chamber of the musician. Linen thread was used for building the arch.

CitĂŠ des Arts de Winnipeg

Short Term Residency for Performers Due to the great potential of the Forks for hosting different types of cultural events and activities, and the fact that so many different festivals are already being held there during the year, the intent of this development is to allocate the program to a foundation which aims to welcome short term residency of foreign artists in Winnipeg.

By placing the studios (or practice rooms) on the ground floor, visitors experience a different atmosphere each time they walk in the Forks, be it through hearing musicians play their instruments or seeing dancers and actors practice their routines and roles. This also gives the artists a new and rewarding experience that is to be among their audience and receive live feedback when they practice, as opposed to being isolated in their practice rooms. A ramp which crosses through the building raises you gradually from street level to the “art hub and then becomes a bridge that connects the two buildings and their functions together.

A Library for Unwritten Stories

An Architecture for Unscripted Exchange The goal of this project is to create a facility in order to collect, tell and preserve stories of individuals, as well as stories that are originally passed among generations through oral traditions. Particularly, I focused on “storytelling” as an example of a collective activity, and “oral history” as a means of collecting and preserving people’s stories. I envision this library as a collection of meeting spaces where people can share their ideas and experiences and informally pass knowledge from one person to another. It is a public space for interpersonal communication. A library that aims at building a peaceful community by bringing people together through sharing and collaboration.

Located at the entrance of St. Boniface, the site is very close to the heart of downtown Winnipeg and the Exchange district. The existence of pedestrian Esplanade Riel Bridge from the Forks, which is the most important tourist attraction of the city, paired with the Provencher Bridge provides a great accessibility to the site for both cars and pedestrians. By crossing the bridge one can experience new characteristics of the city and the transition between English speaking part of the city and the French speaking part and also from commercial and administrative sector to residential, it seems like we are stepping into a brand new world. The Red River as a fur trading route played a significant role in the formation of the initial core of both city of Winnipeg and St. Boniface. The history of this area is strongly tied up with the stories of immigrations from different countries such as England, France and Scotland in addition to the presence of first nations in this region. This multicultural context provides a great scene for bringing all these cultures together and learning about their stories. Natural elements like greenery in park (Parc Joseph Royal) and the river, and their role in creating a pleasant and leisurely atmosphere and wonderful views was a crucial element in choosing this location for the project. Therefore the northern side of the bridge was considered as the development of the already existing trial on the southern part of the bridge.

CONTEXT MAP

The Living Cliff Theater Co-Author with Yi Zheng

Located in Rockwood, Manitoba, the stony mountain’s quarry was once covered by a shallow sea during the late Ordovician period. When the last ice age retreated, prairie land and escarpments were left behind. Thus came the cliff in Stony Mountain, recording the geological history as well as the pace of evolution throughout time. The concept of the living cliff theatre is to keep the “time line” written on the cliff going. To do this, these indigenous plants on site are implemented into the cliffs to create this vertical cliff garden, which can not only make the cliff more attracting but also provide a great opportunity for research related purposes.By bringing these herbaceous plant species onto the cliffs, there is the hope that these plants can be part of the future fossils, telling people about the stories happening now, just as these existing ones telling us about the Ordovician period. There are several significant elements being used in the projects. The first one is the cliff. The cliff provides a great base for creating a vertical garden by naturally containing different forms of gaps that can host herbaceous plants. The second one is plant. During our research, there are over ten species of herbaceous plants native to Manitoba that are flourishing on site. The fact that these plants can survive here provides a guarntee for the further process of natural maintainance. Another element that already exists on site and forms the whole body of the quarry is stone. For the lower part, stones of larger size are collected and arranged to be "seats" in front of the cliff theatre. With these seats, even an outdoor classroom can be formed. For the upper part above the cliff, smaller-sized stones are scattered above the newly planted ground covering plants as stepping stones for people up there to have access to the edge of the cliff. 22

For horizontal gaps without extended rock covering the up, plants with either cascade or erect habit of growth can be applied. For this type of gap, time for plants exposed to sunlight can be long. Plants adapted to a drier moisture condition might be the preferable species for this kind of gap. For horizontal gaps with extended rock covering the up, only plants with cascading habit of growth can be applied since these upper rock can block the way for growth. Also, plants with a higher tolerance for shade should be applied. For angled cliff gaps, plants with erect habit of growth as well as a need of long photoperiod could be a better choice since this kind of gap is providing adequate amount of sunshine for plants.

The missing Link

Co-Author with Jenn Yabloniwski, Mamie Griffith, Zaid bin Tanveer

The Link is a floating structure on the river that promotes connectivity across communities and encourages year round urban engagement with Winnipeg’s river. The Assiniboine and Red rivers have been historically significant pathways, and the central meeting place for people across the prairies for thousands of years. The proposal aims to re-link the communities adjacent to the river with a 5km path in the center of the river between North Point Douglas and The Forks. The floating structures will be rotatable to allow for boat thoroughfare and flexible to promote interchangeable, multi programming space. For the floating structure, neighborhood nodes for docking and infrastructure will be built up in each community and existing public park space as a place to get on and off the structure. Potential programs include a CafÊ, music/theater venue, monarch butterfly habitat, community gardens and an elevated park/plaza.

FlexiBED

The flexible bed hangs from the ceiling by a series of cables and wheels on each side. The special arrangement of the wheels allows them (and thus the cables) to move independently along their respective tracks. The length of each cable can also be modified arbitrarily by winding the cable around a spool, which is co-axial with the wheel but is not attached to it. The free movement of the wheels and the cables enables one to easily change the form of the bed, to make the most of small spaces, and to explore numerous possibilities for decorating the room.
