MARYAM Q. INTERIOR DESIGN PORTFOLIO VISUAL CONNECTIVITY & SHADING
ABSTRACT Visual connectivity: Is the aspect of architecture and interior design which links a space to a feature which is unique. This can be in the form of a striking element or a view which encapsulates the observer. Visual connectivity is a study undertaken in order to propose an effective design strategy which directly links to the concept of the space and/or would have been designed in a manner where the designer intentionally seeks to draw the attention of the observer towards the element. Shading: a feature of architecture whose initial intension is to provide protection from the sun. However, sometimes, by conducting a close analysis it can be observed that architectural elements seek to incorporate shading as a form of inter-connection to spaces thereby, providing an enhanced indoor experience which though indoors, can also be a transgression to outdoor spaces. The following project pursues to explain, understand and analyze, through brief sketch studies and imagery, the context of , trasitionary spaces, shading and visual connectivity within indoor and outdoor spaces. In order to form an authentic understanding, the study was conducted within a varying building typology ranging from commercial, institutional, hospitality, F&B interiors, residential and interiors for religious use.

TASHKEEL ART GALLERY Tashkeel is a contemporary art gallery situated at the outskirts of the main city, within a small community called Nad Al-Sheba. Nad Al- Sheba is known for its residential neighborhood, with architectural styles which are a culmination of contemporary and modern. The typology of the building conveys that it is home for art and design lovers. Having its own resident artists, graffiti artists, along with several art studios, digital printing laboratories, meeting rooms and a library, the building compiles various activities within a small structure. The transitionary space selected for this study is the outdoor corridors which conjoins the main space and the outdoors. It is a space which is used as an informal meeting space especially during the winter months when the weather is pleasant. An interesting feature about the corridors is its visual connection to the green areas outdoors through its arabesque arches which signify the traditional architecture of the building.
Visual connection into the green areas outdoors
View through the back yard corridors looking outside, evokes a sense of being outdoor, though one is still within the boundaries of an indoors space.
The arabesque structure conveys tradition within the UAE where archs are symbolic of cultural buildings. The morphology of the structure portrays the evolution of the building in terms of the upper and the lower levels, wherein the building arches and corridors are presented at only the lower levels. This is because, traditional interiors of the buildings within the UAE, circulation and transition spaces were built either at the frontal facade or at the back and/or in this case, both.
COFFEE MUSEUM, AL BASTAKIYA Sitting at the heart of Bastakiya at the Fahidi district is a coffee museum, narrating a story of coffee throughout history within the gulf. They typology of the building conveys a traditional residency building which has undergone architectural intervention and used a space for a commercial institution. A fundamental aspect of the building aside from the traditional neighborhood which it surrounds, is the skylight feature. The skylight is made using thatched material in a grid system which has square openings at alternate locations. The feature adds a dynamic flare to the space especially during noon when the sun is at its peak, casting shadows within the space. An attractive aspect of the space to is the play of shadow and light during the day, allowing the user to experience the space as a time capsule, enhancing the user experience as a result.

GOLD DIAMOND PARK
Gold diamond park is a contemporary structure used as a hub for retail and business centers. The structure comprises of three abstract buildings built beside each other. A key feature to be observed is the ‘H’ spaced structure. This structure consists of an outdoor canopy which is the shaded site chosen for the study. The canopy comprises of an overhead slatted feature in treated teak wood. It also incorporates a seating area of the occupants of the building to enjoy a pleasant experience away from the hustle of life. Additionally, the structure of the building is such that it provides a protective cover during the hash hours of day
Play of shadow and light within the space
The canopy includes abundance of water features in order to keep the space cool The analysis of the space involved conducting observational study of the space during the morning hours when the sun was not at its peak, till late noon where harsh light could be observed. The concluding analysis conveys that the space had more occupants during early morning hours when the sun was not at its peak and during the late afternoon and evening hours.
ZABEEL PARK
Zabeel park is a public park located at the north west of Dubai. The space features familial amenities such as relaxation spaces, barbecue areas, play areas for kids as well as astronomy building , inclusive of science education spaces. JJ’S CHARCOAL & GRILL
COMPTOIR - 102
BAB AL SHAMS, RESORT Bab al shams resort is situated at the out skirts of Dubai. The building typology is that of a hotel resort, replicating old structures of Dubai. The resort is a mini community with all the amenities under one umbrella. Along with having a traditional architectural style, the resort amalgamates the concept of alleys and tunnels, replicating a mini city. Transitory space used in this instance for the study are the alleys and tunnels. A key reason being the use of the space as a shading feature which conveys the traditional use of tunnels during the past. During the study, it was noted that people frequented the tunnels the most during the day and the alleys were used for circulation purposes the most during the evening time.
