ADG COLLECTIVE ART EXHIBITION 2014 Introduction

Dolores Lungaro-Mifsud, 106th Meeting Artist, 22.11.2012

The Art Discussion Group Committee unanimously decided to organize a collective art exhibition in May – June 2014 at Cavalieri Art Hotel, St. Julians in both art galleries: Renoir and Monet. This event will mark ADG’s 27 years in the service of artists (1987-2014) and its 120th Meeting Artist in April 2014, an event organized every month as a platform for artists. To celebrate and commemorate the event ADG is publishing a catalogue/book to document the collective art exhibition. This document is presenting a spectrum of art in Malta in 2014 by Maltese and foreign artists living among us. Since 70 artists are taking part this publication will open a window on the situation of the creative arts in Malta. The exhibition includes painting, sculpture, ceramics and photography. These four sections present work in varied media and technique. This illustrated hard-bound volume will be representative of local talent and also bring together all the artists in friendship and in a sense of cooperation, collaboration and unity.

The ADG Committee has insisted on the professional quality of images of artworks presented for publication and displayed for the exhibition, and on simplicity in designing the catalogue thus keeping text to a minimum and giving prominence to the illustrations or visuals. The publication will help in the orientation and education of the general public and augment its appreciation and evaluation. The catalogue will be launched during the inauguration on Thursday 2nd May 2014. The sponsors of the Collective Art Exhibition May 2014 are: Valletta Fund Management, Cavalieri Art Hotel, Bestprint, Vee Gee Bee, Marsovin, John Hudson and the Art Discussion Group.

ART DISCUSSION GROUP A BRIEF HISTORY 1987-2014

In February/March of 1987, on the initiative of Paul Asciak and with the full collaboration of the co-founder E. V. Borg, a group of artists banded together and started meeting at the premises of Din l-Art Ħelwa in Valletta. The Group became known as the Art Discussion Group (ADG).

Mary Portelli, 99th Meeting Artist, 24.06.2012

ADG’s first activity was a seminar about Maltese Contemporary Art chaired by Dr. Albert Ganado with a board of four speakers: E. V. Borg, Mario Buhagiar, Emanuel Fiorentino, Antonio Spinosa Rodrigues. The seminar took place on the premises of Din l-Art Ħelwa in Valletta on Thursday 26th

March 1987. The seminar was well attended and augured well for the future. ‘Development or Progress’ was the first seminar on ceramics organized by ADG at Hotel San Julien, St. Julians on Saturday 19th June 1993 for 45 participants. Eventually ADG published a report of proceedings in both English and Maltese in the Sunday Times of Malta (08.08.1993) and in InNazzjon Tagħna (15.07.1993). Eighteen years after, ADG organized its second seminar on ceramics on Saturday 26th March 2011 at Cavalieri Art Hotel, St. Julians with the title ‘Growth, Potential & Opportunities’ attracting 62 participants. The chairman was E. V. Borg and the speakers were: Leonard Agius, Marika Azzopardi, Joan Haber, Angelo Mizzi, Paul Scerri and Paul Vella Critien. For the occasion a National Exhibition of Ceramics was organized at the same venue, attracting 32 ceramists with 64 works. The exhibition was documented with an exhaustive catalogue. The meeting of members became a regular feature and up to May 1998 the Group Committee organised 80 meetings or events. A circular was issued on Thursday 7th May 1998 for the meeting dedicated to Neville Ferry (b.1945), the ceramist. It took place on Thursday 14th May 1998. ADG again invited its members and guests for a meeting on Thursday 17th October 2013 to commemorate Neville Ferry (1945-2011). Present for the meeting was Ms. Rose Ferry. The activities involved were meeting artists,

Samuel Sultana, 119th Meeting Artist, 25.03.2014

holding lectures on art, seminars, and visiting artists in their studio. The latter activity was always well received and attended. On the insistence of old members, E. V. Borg decided to organise a dinner on Thursday 5th January 2010 to attract new members to the group and kindle enthusiasm among artists and art lovers, to join ranks and work together. The ADG committee organizes ‘Meeting Artist’, an invitation extended to a personality in the arts, once a month, to meet our members and friends. Since we tried to diversify we have invited artists working with glass, mosaicists, photographers, restorers, ceramists, musicians and an architect. Such diversity has attracted a wider audience. The ADG Group unites artists and helps them organize exhibitions, meet the general public and art lovers. It encourages artists to expound concepts, visions, beliefs, doubts and fears. The Group is a non-profit organisation, autonomous, apolitical and voluntary and as an NGO it abides by rules and laws as enunciated by the Voluntary Organisations Act.

The audience during the 119th Meeting Artist, that included Lorraine Finlay from Wales and Andrew Philip Hoyle from Scotland

ADG has become a platform for artists as it helps to bridge together the artist and the general public especially those who love art and appreciate creative talent. In 2014 ADG is celebrating 27 years of activity: 19872014 and its 120th meeting in April this year. ADG has an online presence with a website: www.adgmalta.webs.com to communicate better, feature and promote its guest artists.

I am a vigorous Expressionist. My romantic vision interprets life’s harsh reality in my intimate and personal acute idiom, in chromatic colours with a mannerist stance. My colours almost straight from the tube are somewhat dark and somber and emanate a certain roughness and rusticity. Such vision is related to my stark realism the result of my close and intimate connection to the land which I work to earn a living. The frugality, the roughness and hard life of the farmer is boldly expressed in my work. Nature inspires me.

I speak in shapes, in forms and volumes in space. I love the human figure and since I have studied anatomy and the nude I am a realist. My textured figures capture the light as in Impressionist sculpture. I am an expressionist and I contribute to the vision of a social realist. I studied in Rome and belong to the Italian school of modern sculpture. My mentors are: Francesco and Arturo Martini, Manzu and Emilio Greco.

I am not inspired by beauty. I am impressed by, and reflect on, life’s vicissitudes, decadence and deterioration, on wanton destruction and death, the singular democratic levelling. I philosophize on man’s despicable brutality and violence. And although I do not moralize I expose and condemn man’s heinous acts, deceit, hypocrisy and betrayal.

Nature for me is a source of inspiration for my sculpture. Nature is my master and mentor. I try to bring out my external self and inner being of despair and real hope, of deeply felt pain and burden of the world, but also a sense of real joy, that provides life with real meaning.

My art is grounded in my fascination with the Mediterranean milieu. Whilst my work is figurative it often tends towards the ethereal and transcendental, a quality that my preferred medium (watercolour) admirably lends itself to. Certainly the hues applied in my work are not constrained by reality but inspired by it. My palette is applied primarily to strike an emotive chord.

I find the Maltese landscape fascinating, no matter the season. I love our rural villages, the wayside chapels, the rubble walls and the rocky beaches that offer excellent material for a good composition. I also love the sun-drenched walls, the contrast of light and shadow and that particular soft light that caresses the sky in early evening.

I aim to convey the essential or the essence in my art and express only what I think is vital to grasp or to capture the viewer’s attention. The texture is the result of a rich impasto or dry brush technique, a balance reached between the aggressive application of paint and use of surgical gauze glued to the ground that thickens and roughens the canvas and a studied use of subtle colour and soft tonal effects.

I live in a land of dreams and I paint fantastic landscapes inspired by reality, by land, sea and sky. Though figurative my compositions melt into the semi-abstract or abstracted realm. Critics rate my work in the field of photo-journalism as excellent. It is considered news items based on human action. My work could be termed popular or sociological as a genre of social realism. My spontaneous shots together with the ‘instant impact’ element they produce by their sharp and stark realism make it imperative for the spectator to participate.

I am a strong determined character though eclectic in taste. I am obsessed with passion and desire, speed, spontaneity and improvisation. Through draughtsmanship and sharply defined linearity and geometric qualities I try to achieve a dramatic ‘chiaroscuro’ effect. My predilection for dark and obscure forms, and spaces lit by fitful brilliant flashes of light, reveal the dark side of my character.

Seeped in local archaeology he was inspired by his study of primitive and African art and Barbarian culture in Europe. Fortunately for the artist he discovered for himself how to fuse his Mediterranean and romantic roots with Nordic and expressionistic tendencies that he had inherited through his family’s origin. Possibly one of the best exponents of local art after the 70’s.

My art is a polarity of forces. I work slowly and patiently. I feel that the secret for humanity to achieve a new path or direction, stability and peace, lies in balancing this attraction and opposition of forces. If this transformation in humanity occurs, artists around the world would feel this new energy and would create their work of art based on this new culture.

Decades of impressions impinging on my subconscious moulded the artistic ethos for the expressions in my sculptures. At times readily distinguished: forms, spaces, growth and sublime artefacts sculpted by mother nature, the ultimate inspiration of many artists, other times known only once they are immortalized by earth and fire, other times still unknown wonders to me their own creator.

Mine is a journey of a soul in torment, a therapeutic confession of a spiritual struggle, a factual account of a mental crisis that is both psychic and physically tangible. I believe strongly in a structural language and agree with Jacques Lacan who argued that the unconscious is ‘literally structured like a language with the consequence that deconstruction provides us with the right way to understand it’. I believe that art is a perfect set of rules that in reality do not exist.
