ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT

2022-23

A Message from the President

Dear Mary Baldwin alumni,

It is with great joy that I write to you during the 181st year in our distinguished history. As we continue our time honored traditions of the fall semester here in Staunton, my thoughts often turn to you with admiration of your remarkable contributions to your alma mater.

As you may already know, in August I announced that this year, my 20th as president, would be my last. I will retire on June 30, 2023. With humility, I have been extraordinarily honored to lead and serve alongside each of you. We have worked together with shared commitment to maintain our momentum with devotion to the mission, legacy, and promising future of Mary Baldwin University. My husband, Dan Layman, and I are truly blessed to be part of this community, and he has been an enabling and devoted partner to me and in our work for Mary Baldwin.

Over the past decade of far-reaching evolution, we built the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences, transitioned from a college to a co-ed university, and continued programmatic innovation. This past year as we emerged from the pandemic we synthesized the components of our distinctive small university into a centralized and cohesive whole, with three colleges and plans in motion to create a dynamic new hub of student support through the McCree Center for Life Success. The Board has approved a new four-year financial and strategic framework, paving the way for a new phase of innovation and growth in this rapidly evolving landscape of higher education. That is why after careful consideration, I believe this is the best time to turn to the next chapter and prepare to welcome our 10th president next July.

I offer my deepest appreciation and abiding affection to everyone in our extended Mary Baldwin family. To you, our alumni, you are our legacy, agents of change and compassion, and we intend to live our promise to be your university for life. I have been constantly renewed by knowing so many of you and benefitting from your passionate engagement about how Mary Baldwin transformed you.

We welcome your continued participation in lifelong learning and professional development opportunities through the Office of Alumni Engagement. This guide is an excellent resource for the many ways we hope to connect with you throughout the year. I personally cannot wait to see you at the Gratitude Tour events and the virtual engagement series in the coming months.

Until then, I remain incredibly grateful for you, and everything you do for Mary Baldwin.

Kind regards,

Engage.

Celebrate.

Connect.
Last year, we worked tirelessly to provide engaging events for Mary Baldwin alumni. Offering both virtual and in person options, our 2021-22 series of programming invited alumni to get involved, stay connected, and celebrate each other. None of these fantastic events would have been possible without the support of our alumni community. From feedback to volunteer efforts, we are so grateful for your input as we continue to provide quality programming and opportunities for engagement. centered on community, relevancy, lifelong learning, and professional development. came out to support Mary Baldwin and each other last year. Alumni Return Home to Mary Baldwin

For the first time in two years, alumni and guests came back to campus to celebrate Homecoming and reconnect in person on June 3–4. Several featured events were also offered virtually, including the Homecoming kick-off, which included a university update with President Pamela R. Fox and a keynote address by Dacrie Brooks ‘98. Over 80 attendees enjoyed the weekend, both in person and online.

Further opportunities for lifelong learning were offered through Back to Class sessions in

botany, leadership skills, and healthcare trends, all featuring MBU faculty members. A convivial highlight this year was the Class of 1972’s 50th Reunion and induction into the honorary Grafton Society. Fox, Dean Emeritus Jim Lott, and Professor Emerita Terry Southerington were among the speakers who provided remarks and congratulated this special group.

The two-day event culminated in a celebration dinner on Saturday with live music, dancing, and many opportunities for alumni to revel in each other’s company.

< The Class of 1972 — the Grafton Society’s newest inductees — celebrated their 50th Reunion this year. Additionally, they exceeded their Reunion giving goal by $20K and raised $62,032. Congratulations, and thank you for your support!
