NOVEMBER 5, 12, 19, 26 | 2-2:30PM | The Art of the (New) Deal Join a Cape Lookout ranger at the Old Beaufort Post Office and discover the history of four unique murals and the fascinating life story of the artist that created these national treasures. The murals include: the Mailboat "Orville G" to Cape Lookout, Wild sand ponies, Canadian geese used as decoys, and the Crissie Wright in 1886 winter storm. They were painted in 1939 by Simka Simkhovitch. These were commissioned by the United States government under President Roosevelt’s New Deal Federal Arts Program, which gave work to American artists during the Depression years from 1933-1943. NOVEMBER 15 | 1-2PM | Maritime Matinee: ‘Ribbon of Sand: Cape Lookout National Seashore’ Explore the wild seascape of Cape Lookout, one of the world’s last natural barrier islands and a littleknown, remote section of the famed Outer Banks of North Carolina. Now the National Seashore, Cape Lookout and neighboring islands North Core Banks and Shackleford Banks are home to sand dunes covered in sea oats, wild horses, historic life-saving stations and forgotten villages. The 27-minute film will be screened in the museum auditorium. Free event, no registration required. Location: North Carolina Maritime Museum, 315 Front Street Contact: 252-504-7740 NOVEMBER 16 | 11AM-12PM | Maritime Matinee: A Pirate’s Table Associate Education Curator Christine Brin will be looking at clues from the remains of ships such as Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge and the British warship Mary Rose to share more about the lives of the sailors and pirates during what is commonly called “The Golden Age of Piracy,” which stretched from roughly 1650 to about 1730. Specifically, this program will look at what the pirates were eating, how they were preparing and storing their food and what materials they were using to cook and consume their food. This program will be appropriate for all visitors, including families with older children. Free event, no registration required. The Menhaden Whisky Society is an informal get together to sample some unique whiskeys and engage in discussion and fellowship with like-minded people. A small, innovative taste of food is paired with each whisky. Whisky tastings will take place monthly and whisky dinners will also be held throughout the year. The Menhaden Whisky Society is a nod towards Beaufort’s heritage and rich fishing industry. Menhaden was the fish that built Beaufort. Menhaden companies in Beaufort provided generations of workers with a dependable livelihood, and Menhaden became synonymous with Beaufort. The trees will feature the story of Shackleford Horses, vintage decorations from Ocracoke, memories of Portsmouth Island along with the Core Sound Quilters’ original quilted ornaments and family treasures from many Down East communities. Friday night is a preview party, followed by two full days of programming that celebrates the unique heritage of the little more than a dozen small, unincorporated communities that make up Down East Carteret County. All decorated boats are judged and prizes for excellence and creativity are awarded at the Awards Party after the Flotilla at the Beaufort Hotel. Donations go to the Beaufort Lions Club. Children ages 12 and younger will need to be accompanied by an adult.
