Module Brief Title: Product, Range & Distribution

STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal Project Rationale What do you intend to do and why? I want to make a kid’s book publishing of folks and tales from another country, at the moment I have two choice for me to pick. One is from an ancient Chinese folk (more like a poem) which has already told in 1000 years ago, the story is about the habits for Chinese New Year(but also have an another meaning of the story, about the war, the enemy back in 1000 years ago) Another choice is folk from Japan, I always found the Japanese folks are fascinated and interesting.(if I am doing the Japanese tales I will make the well known tales, such as the fox’s bride, The tale of bamboo Princess Kaguya ) But at the same time I want to get people to know more about the place where I from and the histories about the ancient poem, I have a feeling that the poem is losing in transmission and the young generation do not know this poem very much, I would not want this meaningful poem to disappear and I hope it will keep passing on after years and years. (The only problem of the poem is there aren’t a lot of details and researches it will be very hard for me to find the “true story”behind the poem. )

THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include theoretical and non-creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary Illustration practice. GENERAL THEMES:

The losing culture, ancient Chinese poem. The meaning for the poem and the true story about it. SPECIFIC SUBJECTS: The culture and the transmission of a poem has been passed through about 1000 years. The old Chinese(Cantonese)poem. The traditional custom ways of new Lunar year and the Cantonese culture.

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production/ distribution of work in response to selected briefs? SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: An easy and readable story(find the translated version first, or translate by myself if I can’t find one) AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: ● Generally all age group-(for people willing to know more about different cultures and kids. For example: parents, grandparents getting the book for their kid/grandchildren) ● Translate into English, like a learning book or bedtime story/ want to learn Chinese/English(will translate into easy languages so that people will understand straight away) ● Magazine editor, like kid’s magazine publishers ● Librarians ● Schools, nursery schools, playgroups

PRODUCTION/DISTRIBUTION METHODS: ● E-book ● Printed picture book ● Comic fairs, comic conventions ● Education fairs(we have this weird thing in Hong Kong, for parents to sort out their kids future or something like this...) ● Taster version give away in schools, playgroups ● Copies in libraries

CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioners and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production /Distribution. ILLUSTRATORS / DESIGNERS / STUDIOS: ● My folk lover- Catherine Campbell(simple black and white line drawings with colourful patches) ● Matt Leines(colourful drawings with creation beast drawings) ● Raquel Aparicio(simple and delicate drawings, sometimes minimalism sometimes with fine detailed) ● Yelena Bryksenkova(patterns based drawings) ● Trudi Finch(fairy-liked drawings, very loose colours and pastel colours) ● Ulla Norup Milbrath(3D objects and illustrator) CREATIVE SKILLS What practical skills do you intend to further develop and apply during your project? What do you intend to use the skills for? Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.

I am going to try lino printing this time,I feel like lino cuttings is the best fit printing method for this brief(I might be wrong but I am going to try it out first) or combining lino, digital and screen printing together to create a nice detailed prints. May be a moving book trailer in after effect(I enjoyed doing the short animation for the last project, so I might do a short promotion for this project as well) KEY TEXTS List a selected number of books, articles and texts that are central to your proposed area of practice. These should include a combination of design and non-practice based books, theoretical texts as well as visual publications. You should include a list of relevant websites.

one sinks, one “convex” and one “concave”. (a metaphor of male and a female’s body)”

Another version of the translation(the song one): “月光光 照地堂 Moonlight, shining on the ground

蝦仔你乖乖瞓落床 "Shrimp" [a term of endearment given to the child], you obediently go to bed 聽朝阿媽要趕插秧咯 Tomorrow mother needs to quickly plant the seedlings 阿爺睇牛去上山崗 啊... [Paternal] grandfather watches the cows go up to the mountain outpost, ah... 蝦仔你快高長大咯 "Shrimp," you'll soon grow tall and big 幫手阿爺去睇牛羊 啊... Help your grandfather watch the cows and sheep, ah... 月光光 照地堂 Moonlight, shining on the ground 蝦仔你乖乖瞓落床 "Shrimp," you obediently go to bed 聽朝阿媽要捕魚蝦咯 Tomorrow your mother needs to catch fish and shrimp 阿嫲織網要織到天光 啊... [Paternal] grandmother weaves a net until daylight, ah... 蝦仔你快高長大咯 "Shrimp," you'll soon grow tall and big 划艇撒網就更在行 Row the boat out to cast the net [...can't translate the rest of the verse...] 月光光 照地堂 Moonlight, shining on the ground 年卅晚 摘檳榔 [...can't translate the first part of the verse...] harvest the betel nuts 五穀豐收堆滿倉咯 The abundant grain fills the granary 老老嫩嫩喜洋洋 啊... [....can't translate this verse...] 蝦仔你快啲瞇埋眼咯 "Shrimp," you'll soon close your eyes 一覺瞓到大天光 啊... Sleep until the day light, ah...” (From http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/phorum/read.php?1,16989,16989 ) I am going to make an illustration based on this short paragraph of text, it is a great example of a short narrative story of the history and cultural research!
