DESIGN INSPIRATION CAME FROM THE LUXURIOUS AND HIGH-END BOHEMIAN HOTEL IN SAVANNAH, GEORGIA. HISTORIC PRESERVATION WAS A KEY ASPECT OF THE PROJECT. THE MAIN GOAL WAS TO CREATE A SEAMLESS CONTRAST BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL GOTHIC REVIVAL CHARACTERISTICS AND A MODERN, CONTEMPORARY STYLE. THIS UNIQUE BAR AND RESTAURANT WAS ACHIEVED BY INCORPORATING DIFFERENT TEXTURES AND MATERIALS ACCENTING THE ORIGINAL ARCHITECTURE. AN OPEN FLOOR PLAN WAS UTILIZED TO CREATE AN INVITING SPACE. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WAS GIVEN TO THE SMALL GOTHIC REVIVAL DETAILS THAT MADE THE BUILDING UNIQUE.

GREAT ROOM DESIGN CONCEPT
13
INSPIRATION FOR THIS DESIGN DERIVES FROM THE TRADITIONAL HOME, COMFORTABLE, OPEN, AND INVITING. ACHIEVING THIS BY UTILIZING ARCHWAYS AND WALLS. COMFORT IS A HUGE ISSUE FOR THIS AGING COUPLE. THE ANGLES FROM THE EXTERIOR COMPLEMENT THE TRAFFIC PATTERS FOR THE INTERIOR. WITH THIS OPEN FLOOR PLAN ACCESSIBILITY IS NOT AN ISSUE. THE BATHROOM AND KITCHEN FOCUS ON ADA ACCESSIBILITY. THE LOWERED COUNTER TOPS HELP ACCENT THE SPACE, AS WELL AS ADD INTEREST. THE USE OF LIGHT TILED WALLS ADDS GEOMETRIC ACCENT TO THE SPACE., AS WELL AS A MORE ELEGANT FEATURE. WITH HINTS OF INTERESTING FABRIC A STYLE ESSENCE IS ADDED TO THE SPACE MAKING IT FUN YET TRADITIONAL.

CHANGES WERE MADE TO THE EXISTING HOME DUE TO SAFETY REASONS. SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR PROBLEMS THE ELDERLY RUN INTO ARE REDUCED EYESIGHT, POOR BALANCE, AND REDUCED FLEXIBILITY. MANY CHANGES NEED TO BE MADE TO CURRENT HOMES TO GUARANTEE A HAPPY LIFESTYLE. POPULAR AND EFFECTIVE CHANGES, STATED BY AARP, ARE NON-SLIP FLOORS AND BATHROOM GRAB BARS.
RESEARCH ACCORDING TO AARP, 90 PERCENT OF ELDERS WOULD LIKE TO STAY IN THEIR OWN HOMES AS THEY GROW OLDER. EVEN IF THEY NEED ASSISTED LIVING THEY WOULD PREFER TO DO SO UNDER THEIR OWN ROOF. THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS TO THINK ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO AGING IN ONE’S HOME. THERE ARE CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS AND NEEDS THAT HAVE TO BE MET IN ORDER FOR A SENIOR TO COMFORTABLY LIVE. 75 PERCENT REPORT THAT THEY HAD AN INCREASE IN INQUIRIES DUE TO REMODELING. 49 PERCENT STAY IN THEIR CURRENT HOMES AND 36 PERCENT MOVE TO NEW HOMES.. THERE IS AN ORGANIZATION, THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES, CALLED CIAIP. CIAIP STANDS FOR ‘THE COMMUNITY INNOVATIONS FOR AGING IN PLACE INITIATIVE. THIS ORGANIZATION IS ALLOWED BY THE OLDER AMERICANS ACT (OAA) AUTHORIZED BY CONGRESS. THIS PROGRAM HELPS ASSIST COMMUNITIES IN AIDING THE ELDERLY AGE IN THEIR HOMES, ONLY SELECT COMMUNITIES RECEIVE THIS FUNDING. THIS STARTED IN 2006, AND GOES TO SHOW THAT THIS HAS BEEN A POPULAR IDEA FOR QUITE SOME TIME. WITH THE OLDER POPULATION GROWING THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE ADAPTABILITY THROUGH DESIGN. THIS OLDER POPULATION NEEDS TO BE A PART OF THE COMMUNITY, MAINLY BECAUSE THEY HIGHLY POPULATE IT. AARP STATES THAT THE WAY COMMUNITIES ARE DESIGNED WILL MAKE OR BREAK THIS AGING IN PLACE IDEA. POLICIES HAVE BEEN EXEMPLIFIED TO HELP THE ELDERLY AGE IN PLACE. AS DESIGNERS WE NEED TO MAKE IT OUR GOAL TO CREATE AN ACCESSIBLE AND COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT.

RESEARCH
“6 CHECKPOINTS WHEN DESIGNING A PEDIATRIC HEALTHCARE UNIT” By Jane Rohde, AIA, FIIA, AAHID, LEED AP - November 18, 2013 DAMAGE CAN POTENTIALLY OCCUR WITHIN PEDIATRIC HOSPITALS, ACCORDING TO RESEARCHERS, DUE TO CHILDREN NOT BEING ABLE TO ADJUST TO THE NATURAL DAY/NIGHT CYCLE. A HOSPITAL LOCATED IN SAN DIEGO USED STARS APPEARING ON THE CEILING AT NIGHT TO HELP FIGHT THIS POSSIBLE DAMAGE. ALSO, YOUNGER PATIENT EYES ARE GOING TO EXPERIENCE LIGHT IN A DIFFERENT WAY THAN OLDER EYES. OVERALL. PEDIATRIC HOSPITALS NEED TO FOCUS ON TONING DOWN LIGHTING FOR FAMILY AND PATIENTS STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT A FAMILY, CAREGIVERS, AND PATIENTS ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE MORE “FORTHCOMING” WHEN FELT THEY COULD NOT BE OVERHEARD. THEREFORE, ACOUSTICS AND PRIVACY AREAS ARE VERY IMPORTANT IN A HOSPITAL SETTING. SOME PATIENTS, DUE TO WHAT THEY ARE HEALING FROM, MIGHT FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE IN A SETTING WITH A ROOMMATE, MORE PRIVACY BEING ALONE, OR SURROUNDED BY FAMILY. WHILE DESIGNING A HOSPITAL THESE THINGS NEED TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION
