UWRF GRAPHIC DESIGN PROGRAM: IDEAS ON POTENTIAL RESTRUCTURE

ENDURING SKILLS

-solid design ability (simplification of complex ideas through communication using layout, type, graphics & colors) - ability to apply core design skills effectively to contemporary & future mediums - ability to effectively explain & share ideas using presentation, writing & visuals - critical thinking, information literacy and collaboration - design creative research

POTENTIAL IDEAS TO INCORPORATE

- graduating seniors participate in a research design project during their last year, they can display their work in URSCA Fall Gala and/or show work in gallery or “hallway. - develop a professional panel to help guide program & connect with design students - BIG IDEA: develop a UX concentration within graphic design with a focus on the research, user empathy and psychological skills. - is there a way to incorporate professional organization membership (AIGA) into one of the classes? - encourage double majors (psychology, marketing, computer science, business...) - encourage non-majors into more classes!? this helps our students and exposure on campus - design class projects with other specialties on campus.

DESIGN CLASSES KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS TO COMPLETE PROGRAM: -technical competency: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop and knowledge of code (html, css an java script)

- ability to effectively critique others, respond to criticism, & present design to clients - internships and community: work with real customers prior to graduation - separate artist from design: apply user focus to design - passion for design and purpose of design in society - design leadership skills - grant writing - design history

SKILLS WORTH KNOWING - business communications and understanding - personal organizational and ability prioritize - personal and business marketing skills

- technology basics pre-req instead of drawing (most will take drawing anyway?), pass technical skills test (this would give each design student that foundation of skills and allow instruction to focus more apply design using tech in future classes. This could also be a gen-ed class) - 2-D design (as other GD1 pre-req) - G-Design 1 and 2: with a focus on theory? - Typography 1 and 2 - Interaction Design 1 (and optional classes in conjunction with computer science department?) - Packaging Design 1 (and 2) - Communication Design 1 (and 2?) (publications and advertising) - Environmental Design (places, experiences, wayfinding) - Design Leadership and Social Context (*semester before last semester leads to research project) - Design Creative Research Project and Portfolio (last semesters to graduate) - develop a plan so students can graduate in 4-years?

Our mission is to not only provide amazing hand crafted surfboards to all the surfers out in the world, but to provied the knowledge that our ocean and earth needs our help to restore it’s natural beauty. Thousand pounds of garbage is left all around the earth each year, it not only hurts the envorinment but mainly the creatures who live in is. Each year more and more animals are killed from the garbage we leave behind. That needs to change and point seven surf shop hopes to change that. Point seven refers to how the ocean take up 70 percent of the earth and we want to do all that we can to help save and maintain it. Our logo is a sand dollar because we donate a lot of amount of money to foundations that help keep this world clean and that also help the animals who get hurt by all the trash. People of this company also go out and help with local beach pick ups and so much more. We hope to inspire others to get out and help as well. A little help and go a long way.
