Retired Cayuga English professor Ronald Snead passed away on November 5. Ron retired from fulltime service a while ago but continued to work as an Adjunct until last spring. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Society at 607 North Seward Street, Auburn, NY on Saturday, November 18th at 1:00 PM. To send condolences visit: robertdgrayfuneralhome.com

At CCC’s Auburn campus last week, 300 military members were honored in a display that was displayed in the main hallway. The memorial, which is known as The Fallen Stars Memorial, gave tribute to the men and women who were killed in the line of battle in Iran and Afghanistan. The display, which featured a star for each person, along with their rank, hometown, and what branch in which they served. Along with the display, there were flags which represented each division in the armed forces. Also, flags representing 9/11 were close-by.

The smell of chili filled the main hallway last Wednesday, where the Veteran’s Club held their second annual Chili Cook-off .here were many happy faces, with ranting and raving about how good each recipe of chili smelled. The fee to participate, ($5), was donated to a local charity. The $5 fee got you a free bottle of water, the ability to try all of the chili concoctions, and a vote for who had the best chili. Representatives of the club, President Jennifer Casella, Secretary Julia DiMatteo, Treasurer Robin Moore, and Cori Moore were all playing large roles in the cook-off, overseeing, and making sure all were having a good time. There were quite a few contenders in the cook-off contest and each professor at the College was able to cast a vote. The Veterans Chili Cook-off is a new FIND OUT THE WINNER ON BACK PAGE

VETERANS’ WEEK CCC OBSERVANCES

MY OPINION ON KIDS AND THEIR PHONES

OPINIONS HOW I SEE IT... Gabby Rizzo EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Just within a few weeks, some big names in Hollywood have been accused of sexual harassment. I’m sure this isn’t news for many, but it maintains to be a big deal. Celebrities like Kevin Spacey and Louis C.K. have been in the headlines for many stories in the past couple of weeks. Many are upset by the fact that Spacey tried deflecting the allegation by coming out, and that C.K. had used jokes in his stand up, as well as the plotline of his newest movie, “I Love You, Daddy,” that hit pretty close to home to the allegations. C.K. had admitted that the allegations were true and has since apologized for his actions. Late night show hosts have made seething comments about the whole ordeal concerning C.K. With all of these disheartening stories coming out, there is some good coming from it. While all of the situations that had been brought up are deeply upsetting, these people are finally able to open up and bring justice against their predators. Further, as well as getting peace for themselves, they are helping to prevent these predators from harassing others. The braveness of those who have come forward have also helped many others speak up. Just this past Sunday, there was a march for the #metoo movement. A couple hundred people showed for the march. The march is for survivors of sexual harassment, as well as a general protest against it. Women in Film has also launched a sexual harassment help line, as well as giving pro bono legal service to those who have been harassed in the entertainment industry. As disgusting as what is happening is, this is a time for change. Men and women are able to come forward and tell their stories. As a result of this, help prevent sexual harassment in the workplace for future generations to come.

I have seen kids with my own eyes these days just sit around on their technology instead of going outside. There are multiple reasons why kids don’t put their phones down. I am writing to tell the kids that they should put their phones down for a little while, and go outside and play. One problem that the kids are having with the phones is they are not going out to explore new things. If they went out and explored new things, they would actually learn something. Some things that they could explore is nature and see some interesting things like maybe new animals. There is some beautiful nature out there that I know the kids would like to see but they won’t because of technology. They also could go and see old buildings from the olden days. Another problem that I see kids are having with their phones is they

are not hanging out with other people. Kids these days should be hanging out with family and friends as much as they can. The technology is blocking kids from going out and hanging out with their family and friends. Kids could be outside playing soccer or just outside running around. Instead, some kids would rather just sit in the house and do nothing. When their family or friends want to go do something, most kids won’t go do anything because kids are into their phones too much. According to CNN, 77% of parents say kids get distracted by technology from hanging out with other people a few times a week. This is a problem because kids are not hanging out with family when they should be. T h e f i n a l problem that the kids are having w i t h phones is their health. Their

health is starting to go bad because they are either looking at the screen too long or they are not getting any exercise. If they went outside and did something then their health wouldn’t be as bad as it is. Some symptoms you could observe are they are getting weak due to not enough exercise. One of the most obvious symptoms is obesity: kids are gaining more weight than they would be if they were exercising. One solution is kids should have limited time that they can be on their phones so that they actually go and do something and then they can go back to using their phones for a little while. I say kids should be allowed on their phone for half an hour every couple of hours. Another solution is taking them away for a day and letting them realize what it is like to actually go outside and do something instead of just being on their phones all the time. I disagree with kids staying inside and just using their phones constantly instead of going outside and playing with friends or family. Kids’ lives will improve if they use their phones less by seeing how much they like spending time with their family and getting the exercise they need.

THE CAVS WILL BEAT THE GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS IN THE 2018 FINALS Don’t get me wrong, I am a Golden State Warriors fan. I know when you hear that the first thing that comes to mind is “Bandwagon.” The family has been Warriors fans since I was born. Recently we were given a really good draft pick with our star players Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, Dremond Green, Patrick Macaw, Andre Igudouila and now Swaggy P. Anyway, the Warriors and the Cavaliers have had a lot of history back in the past as well. For example, the Warriors and the Cavs were last seen was in 1945 when the Warriors and the Cavs were not in the top 5 teams. Every time they stepped on the court it was a 100% given game on both sides. Both always battled for the 5th place spot to the Finals, but this year should be a little different because the Cavs were given a pretty good hand with two reunited players from the Heat LeBron James and the one and only Dwayne Wade. The Cavs should beat the Warriors in the 2018 Finals. The new line up for the Cavs is pretty nasty, but also a big surprise to me because LeBron James and D Wade were my favorite duo on the Heat, but now they are reunited on the Cavs which is a big move for them. Anyway the lineup for 2018 is LeBron James, D Wade , Isaiah Thomas, Derek Rose, J.R. Smith, Tristian Thomas, Kyle Cover, and last but not least Kevin Love. They upgraded because they fired David

Blatt and hired a new coach, Mike Longabardi. He is an expert of man to man coverage, triangle, box press, half court press and he also helps with the offense when needed. But this is a good thing because in the games I noticed that the defense was more comfortable and was more disciplined on getting back on defense which led them to a win in the preseason game. He uses his players as an advantage, for example, using Tristian Thomas to screen Derek Rose’s man so he would have enough room to get away leaving the middle man (Tristan) open for Derrick Rose to pass the ball to the middle were Tristan is going to get the pass with the easy lay-up. The coach is a big upgrade because his players are used for different options. For example, the play I was talking about is just like this. What if the passing lane for Tristan is blocked off? And what if you can’t get the pass to the wings ? No worries because you have the middle open and the Warriors will be playing zone which is two up top three bottom. The match up between these two teams

will be hard to decide now but this is how I think it’s going to go. I think Stephen Curry will be guarding Derek Rose and Isaiah Thomas (when he recovers). Curry does have some advantages like shooting and being crafty so they will have to keep up. Kevin Durant will guard LeBron James, which they both can’t guard each other because they both are strong in the paint so it would be back and forth in scoring. Klay Thomas will be guarding D Wade. I’m so excited to see that because D wade is a great player matched up with a player that has not hacked into his full potential. Klay can shoot threes, mid ranges, lay ups, and has good awareness on and off offense and defense. But D Wade has been doing all that longer than Klay. According to the Washington Post, the 2018 Cavs line up is better than the warriors line up. The Washington Post says that if maybe J.R. Smith and Kevin Love can come together and play team ball, they might be able to beat the warriors. The Cavs score per game is 109 and the Golden state warriors is 110 so they should be able to beat them because of the new players that are placed in their position set. Therefore The Cavs should have a better game this year with the new players they have now and should be able to handle the Golden State Warriors in any game and in the finals of 2018. If not I would be really disappointed in the Cavs. —Kaheed Oxendene, CCC student

2017 NBA FREE AGENCY & TRADES like the Milwaukee Bucks to get better each season in order to compete. It’s now going to be harder for star players in the Western Conference to make NBA All Star teams because there are so many All Stars in the West. The Eastern Conference isn’t as strong anymore because players like Paul George and Carmelo Anthony have left the Eastern Conference. Now we get to see who can take their game to the next level to become an All Star. Now there are a couple other teams to watch like the Minnesota Timberwolves or the Boston Celtics. They have players who also play really well together and they might have a shot at beating the super teams. If everyone can have a good and healthy season the 2017-2018 NBA season will be very interesting. It will be fun to watch all the star talent and star rookies to see what they can do to compete with the NBA super teams. In conclusion I think NBA will be very interesting this year. The Golden state Warriors are still in favor to win the NBA Finals because they still have the best team in the NBA. They added more players who will help them stay the best team in the NBA, like Nick young who is a very good 3 point shooter. Another player they added is Omar Cassipi who is another very good 3 point shooter. So that is why I think the Golden State Warriors will win the next NBA Finals.

EMAIL THE COLLEGIAN AT CAYUGACOLLEGIAN@GMAIL.COM

This offseason in the NBA was one of the craziest the league has ever seen. It all started when Chris Paul got traded to the Rockets. That made other NBA players really think where they wanted to play and who they wanted to play with. This off-season’s consolidation of star talent all on 1 team can make the NBA more interesting with more than 1 star player on the same team. It will be interesting to see how the star players play together. Star players being traded will create super teams because most star players want to play together on the same team. For example the Cleveland Cavaliers traded Kyrie Irving for Isiah Thomas and Jae Crowder. They also acquired Derrick Rose another All Star point guard, and they also got Dwayne Wade, another star guard. Another team that acquired multiple super stars is the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder made 2 big trades acquiring Paul George, an All Star small forward. The Washington Post author Tim Bontemps rated the Paul George trade A+ for the Oklahoma City Thunder. They also did another big trade getting Carmelo Anthony from the New York Knicks. The effect of all the star players playing on the same team for next season is going to change the NBA because other teams are going to play a little harder. It’s also going to force other NBA players on other teams

BB TELEVISED By Neil Boedicker, staff writer CCC students from the SOMA program recently televised the CCC men’s and women’s basketball games for all of Cayuga County. Each student was able to operate a camera from different angles or work in the booth with the director. “What I liked most was all the different equipment we were able to use,” said CCC sophomore Gavin Ellis. “It was a real hands- on experience of what you actually have to do during an actual televised production.” Staff advisor Jeff Szcesniak was very happy with how the event turned out and how wonderful the learning experience for the students who participated. He says it helped the students by doing a production outside of the TV studio. “It gave them a chance to experience an actual sports production,” said Szcesniak. “It was really good practice and a great door opening experience if they want to pursue a career in sports production.” SOMA will be having another television production on December 9th when CCC’s men’s and women’s basketball teams face Mohawk Valley Community College.

THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT DESTINY USA By Nychele Crouch, contributing writer Shopping is an activity that many people enjoy(edit). Destiny USA, previously known as the Carousel Center, has really made it’s mark as more than just an ordinary shopping mall. Since the change of the mall’s name not to mention it’s numerous renovations, the mall has become an attraction for much more than just shopping.

Destiny USA is now home to numerous entertainment level/value activities for all ages. Not only were the starters producing well, but many players coming off the bench provided an extra spark to the team. One of those players was freshman Steven Glover who scored 10 points, five rebounds, an incredible block on the defensive end, and also a spectacular dunk coming off a steal. “I feel like for my team I’m always on the boards, so that’s my main thing is the get rebounds so we can score,” said Glover. “At practice we go hard at each other, so when it’s time to go against anybody else we gotta

Adults also can find entertainment value in the mall’s newer parts such as in the Funny Bone Comedy Club, a place where adults can enjoy food and drinks with friends, all while enjoying live entertainment. With the additions of these entertainment level activities, the mall is drawing in more customers than ever. The mall’s large variety of retail stores make up the majority of the mall space, making Destiny USA the sixth largest shopping mall in the United States. The mall offers many stores that prove to be popular among college students, as well as (non-shopping) related activities. “Hot Topic, Alta Beauty, Sephora, Michaels, and Forever21 are my favorite stores at the mall” said CCC Telcom student Hannah Radell. “They used to have a bowling alleycalled Revolutions, that I liked. Now, I like going to Dave and Busters. It’s got an arcade like atmosphere. I also like their movie theater.” The mall’s entertainment level activities draw in much of its business; ranging from children looking for a fun-filled Saturday afternoon, to adults looking for a way to wind

With the mall’s new found attention and crowds, the shopping experience will undoubtedly be a bit more crowded inside and outside of the mall with all of the foot traffic and car traffic. However many find it worth the hassle, due to the mall’s innovative attractions that most cannot find any place else in this area. “It is a way to get out of the house,” said Radell, who commutes from Auburn when taking a trip to Destiny on the weekends.
