STUDENTS: SAVE MONEY WITH CAYUGA’S TRANSFER-FRIENDLY ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS Students looking to continue their education at a 4-year college after completing a degree in Media at Cayuga Community College now have an easy path to transfer with Cayuga Community College’s articulation agreements. “An articulation agreement gives a student a guarantee that they can finish their bachelor’s’ degree in two years and that all their credits will be accepted.,” Cayuga Community College Humanities Division Chairperson, School of Media and the Arts Director, and Professor Steve Keeler said. “The four schools that we have chosen for articulation agreements have superior media programs at the bachelor’s level and are very transfer-friendly. “ Keeler says students can save a tremendous amount of money on their education by coming to Cayuga first

and then transferring after two years. ““It’s very important to us that students have the opportunity to pursue a bachelor’s degree after receiving their associate’s degree in Media at Cayuga,” Keeler said. CCC has articulation agreements with Ithaca College (Park School of Communication), SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Cortland, and SUNY Oswego. High school students interested in careers in media can start earning credit toward a college degree while still in high school. CCC has articulation agreements with a number of New York high schools. “Students who have taken communications-related high school courses, (media, video production, radio, journalism, photography), may receive college credit at Cayuga for those courses,” said Keeler.

Cayuga Community College continues to expand its curriculum to keep ahead of the rapidly changing world of media. The college’s Telcom Department is now offering an associate’s degree in Media Communications. This program is for students who wish to transfer to four-year programs and pursue careers in Media, Communications, and related fields such as Public Relations, Journalism, Social Media, Media Management, and Strategic Communications. Next year the program will include concentrations in Public Relations, Social Media Communications, and Digital Advertising. Cayuga has had media degree programs since 1969, however, the programs have always been AAS degree programs. “Over time, as the landscape of the media industries has evolved, many more students are transferring to 4-year degree programs rather than entering the workforce,” said Cayuga Community College Humanities Division Chairperson, School of Media and the Arts Director, and Professor Steve Keeler. “While we still emphasize handson learning, this change will better serve those students wishing to transfer.” The new Media Communications AS degree fulfills SUNY’s General Education requirements for transfer. The program is also in sync with established SUNY transfer pathways. For more information about how a Media Communications A.S. degree can lead you to success in the vast field of media, contact Humanities Division Chairperson, School of Media and the Arts Director, and Professor Steve Keeler at (315) 255-1743 ext. 2282 or email: media@cayuga-cc.edu.

“I was the only crew member that was hired like this … and that was because of what I learned at CCC.” – Darryl L. Frank

1983 Telcom graduate

WHAT OUR ALUMNI ARE DOING NOW Independent broadcast media professional Darryl L. Frank, a 1983 Telcom graduate, started D3 Productions Inc. in 1983, and has worked on hundreds of projects including major films, television series, documentaries and commercials. One of his most identifiable works being the American crime drama series Breaking Bad on AMC, for which he has received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Sound Mixing. His advice to students who want to “break” into the business is to get as much experience as possible, “if you can volunteer on student films or whatever, that’s how to do it; and follow your passions, that’s what I did.” Some of his other well-known works include Terminator Salvation, the fourth installment of the Terminator franchise; The Last Stand, an American action film; and From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. Frank recently completed the feature film Villa Capri, starring Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones and Renée Russo. He is currently working on Season 1 of a new supernatural show for NBC, Midnight Texas, with plans to work on the new NASA TV drama for CBS, Mission Control, created by the author of The Martian. Frank credits his varied production background as the reason he’s

been able to land jobs ranging from camera operator to sound mixing. In addition to his three Primetime Emmy nominations for Breaking Bad, he also received one for Comanche Moon and one for Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, along with four Cinema Audio Society (CAS) nominations; three for Breaking Bad, with one for Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey; and won a Technical Excellence and Creativity Award (TEC) for Best Television Sound for his work on Breaking Bad. Speaking of his education from Cayuga Community College, Frank said, “I have been very appreciative of my education at Cayuga, you learn hands-on skills that you use every day on the job. After Cayuga, you realize that your two year degree is better than most four year degrees.” 1984 Telcom graduate, Rick Steele, says he was in the right place at the right time when he started his career in cable working in advertising. “That business was just starting and to say I was on the ground floor, is an understatement. Through no extraordinary efforts and skill on my part, I rose to become, one of two corporate VP’s for AT&T Media Services, the cable sales division of AT&T Broadband, “ said Steele. He says he managed cable advertising

markets east of the Mississippi with a combined revenue of $180 million. In addition, Steele was responsible for the development and oversight of the company’s sales training program and an annual company-wide sales national awards event. After 20 years, Steele says he left the cable industry in 2006 to join a former cable colleague at OOH Advertising and has been working there on and off ever since. “All in all, I mostly enjoy the challenge and gratification of recruiting, coaching and mentoring account executives and managers. That has been very rewarding for me,” said Steele. “Cayuga played a very important role for me. It gave my hands on experience that helped me develop a passion and interest in all types of media. I continue to have great affection for CCC and hope to one day be able to take on some type of teaching role.” Andy Abrams, a 2006 Telcom graduate, began his media career as a video production manager for the NHL team, St. Louis Blues. After five years, Abrams went on the road as a video producer with the WWE for two years. Now Abrams is in Las Vegas working with the NHL’s newest team, the Vegas Golden Knights, as a director of post production.
