STUDENT FOOD PANTRY GETS NEW NAME AND IS OPEN AGAIN!

The Cayuga Collegian is expanding its staff to the Fulton Campus. After years of failed recruiting attempts, the student-run newspaper is welcoming Fulton student, Parker Howell of Mexico, to The Collegian editorial team. “We are very fortunate and happy to have Parker on the team. The biggest obstacles in the past have been time and distance,” explained long-time Cayuga Collegian faculty advisor Mary G. Merritt. “We have asked in every issue for Fulton campus participation, but when you’re not physically a presence on campus, it is difficult to build relationships.” Merritt says historically most Collegian staff members attend classes on the Auburn

FORMER BILLS QB KELLY INVESTS IN AUBURN By Gabby Rizzo, editor-in-chief

Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly came to Auburn to headline the benefit for the new Gavras Center. The Gavras Center provides services and programs for those with physical and developmental disabilities. The state has recently given a grant for what was originally planned as an $880,000 expansion. The new plan includes renovating the facilities exterior as well as an expansion of the preschool program. The financial goal is set at about $1.5 million. At the 2018 Legacy of Caring, Jimmy Kelly was there for the benefit to help raise money, and gave a speech. He took photos and gave signatures at the VIP reception. According to the Auburn Citizen, during his speech he talked about his time playing football and being diagnosed with

cancer in his upper jaw. The goal of his message was perseverance, saying “It’s all about the attitude,” he said. “It’s all about coming together — coming together as a group, coming together as a family. The people here in this organization are family. I get it, and I know a lot of y’all get it, too.”

campus and either do not have car or have limited time because of their work load to make the 40 minute drive to Fulton to cover an event. “I’ve offered students mileage reimbursement and lunch in the past to try to entice them, but it really comes down to overbooked schedules they struggle to juggle.” Howell, a liberal arts English major with a concentration in writing, is presently enrolled in Merritt’s Journalism Practicum course, Telcom 204. The course is a hands-on, beginners’ primer in print journalism, where the student pursues news articles to be published in The Collegian with step-bystep guidance provided by seasoned media writer/journalist Merritt. “After meeting Parker, I am so excited to have her on staff, writing stories about issues and events which affect the students on the Fulton campus. It will make such a huge difference in The Collegian’s scope of coverage and hopefully will help students on both campuses to stay more in touch with what’s going on in both places,” Merritt said. “The newspaper’s staff is always looking for input from the Fulton Campus. Just email them at cayugacollegian@gmail.com or merrittm@cayuga-cc.edu.” Merritt made the trip to the Fulton campus last week to welcome Howell to the team. “I spend most of my time reading and writing while I listen to my vast collection of music taste,” Howell explained in introduction. “When I find the time, I work on various knitting and crocheting projects. I’m part of the National Society of Leadership and Success at Cayuga Community College. I also own many different kinds of cacti, they are my pride and joy.” Students enrolled at CCC on either campus taking at least six credit hours are eligible to become a Collegian staff member. You do not need to enroll in Telcom 204, to join, but the course gives students a solid foundation to expand their news reporting and writing skills. To volunteer for the staff, just send an email introducing yourself to the above email addresses. “The hope is that in the near future, myself and the Auburn staff will meet Parker halfway over lunch to get acquainted,” Merritt said. “We’re excited about the new semester and the wonderful additions to our staff and the hope is our readers will be too!”

COLLEGIAN OFFICE RELOCATED TO T109 By Gabby Rizzo, editor-in-chief Among the many changes to locations on the Auburn Campus, our collegian office is one of them. For the past so many years, our office has been located in the hall that is on the way down to Subway. However, in the very near future, we will be moving down to T-109. Since the nursing department has moved over the summer, the telcom department has added a student lounge, which is T-111, where RAT Guild meetings are held. As we move, chain of moves is occuring. Moving into our current office will be Toni Gianetto (SP), who is currently in the cafeteria, next to the new SGO office. Moving into her office is Norman Lee. Be sure to keep the location moves in mind, and to be on the lookout for more.

HOW I SEE IT... Gabby Rizzo EDITOR-IN-CHIEF It’s officially the beginning of the spring semester. For a lot of students, myself included,it’s their last semester here at CCC. Whether students are transferring or entering the workforce, it’s an exciting time, the next step of their lives. Personally, it’s very bittersweet. It’s hard to think about having to leave friends that I see every day, meeting new people, and just the general anticipation of change. With all of that being said, there’s also the feeling of being ready to move forward. Looking back, my time here went by so quickly. Just a year and a half ago, I had no idea what I wanted to do. A month ago, I sent out applications, eager for my future career. So, with just a few months until graduation, don’t lose track of time. Spend time with the friends that you have made here, be on top of projects and assignments. Time really does fly by.

Jennifer Driscoll, the representative at the Cayuga Onondaga BOCES, educated students at the CCC Job Fair about opportunities in the health care industry.

HOW TO AVOID THE FLU Here are some helpful tips to stay healthy this semester. The flu is widespread throughout New York State, Cayuga County, & Oswego County. Let’s not share our germs. Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. WASH your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to clean your hands. Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. If no tissue is available, cough or sneeze into the bend of your arm. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth. Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home,

work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. It’s not too late to get your FLU SHOT. — Suzanne Wilson, CCC Nurse
