THE OFFICIAL STUDENT-RUN NEWSPAPER OF CAYUGA COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Welcome to Cayuga Community College! By Monica Espada, staff writer
WELCOME! Meet Monica Espada STAFF WRITER
Hello incoming students and welcome to Cayuga Community College! We are excited not only to have you become part of this school, but to accept you into the Cayuga family. We hope to provide you immense opportunities to discover your passions, your goals and who you truly are as an individual. One of the many ways to become successful at CCC is to get involved! For further information on why and how to get involved on campus please see my colleague’s article “Be Active on Campus.” CCC’s core values, as defined by the college on our website, are engagement, integrity, respect and collaboration. We hope these values will help guide you toward success in both your short term and long term goals. However, it is not uncommon for students to be unsure about what
career opportunities they would like to pursue, especially during the first two years you attend college. Thankfully, we can help! Student engagement and Academic Advisement offers counseling and advisement services that can guide you as you are searching for answers. It is also important to note the location of the following services; Student Success Advocates, Financial Aid Office, Business Office, Registrar’s, Center for Academic Success, Office of Academic Resources, Library, Help Desk, Student Engagement and Public Safety. These offices will play an important role in the next few months of your time here at CCC. As JFK once said, “Efforts and
courage are not enough without purpose and direction.” At CCC we wish to help contribute to find your purpose and direction and once again, welcome.

by Steve Brewer ASSOCIATE EDITOR
Hello everyone, my name is Steve Brewer and I am the President of Student Government Organization and Associate Editor of The Collegian. I wanted to take a moment to let you know that both the Student Government Organization and The Cayuga Collegian are here to assist you in any way needed. Both the SGO and The Collegian are the voice of the student body of CCC albeit in slightly different ways. The SGO is the body that governs student clubs, oversees the Senate and ensures that the voice of the students reaches the administration. The Collegian reports the news and happenings on both campuses and helps to highlight any problems that could impact students so they are aware of them and can take action. I encourage you to take note of the locations of the SGO Office and Collegian Office so you can stop by and ask us questions or report a problem to us. On the Auburn Campus the SGO Office is in M-212A which is across the hall from Campus Public Safety and The Collegian
Office is in M-213 at the top of the stairs to the Cafe. The SGO Office on the Fulton Campus is in F-202 overlooking the Learning Commons. While The Collegian does not have an office on the Fulton campus, we are always seeking contributors from the Fulton Campus! If you’re interested, please email us at cayugacollegian@ gmail.com. Be sure to stop in to let us know how your time at the college is going and to inquire how you can get involved with either the SGO or The Collegian. The SGO will be looking for an incoming freshman to fill the Freshman Senator position before running for any open Executive Board positions at the end of the Spring semester. The Collegian is also seeking incoming students who are talented at writing, photography, video editing, etc. to expand our staff and integrate fresh perspectives into the newspaper.

Tips For Freshman
Be Active on Campus
By Monica Espada, staff writer
By Steve Brewer, Associate Editor
As a student that has been attending CCC for two semesters, I know how hectic the first few weeks of classes can be. There are new faces and you’re in new unknown territory. I was very nervous that I would be getting lost all the time, and that I would be too shy to make any friends. I would like to take this opportunity to give you some tips I wished I received as a freshman. 1. You will not get lost if you remember M stands for the main building. T stands for the technology building. L stands for the Library Building. R is for the research building. If you look at the walls, it will direct you to the general vicinity of your classroom. Also, if you ask someone, I’m sure they will be kind enough to help. 2. Making friends is as simple as saying hi. Eventually,
conversation will form and soon enough you’ll be exchanging numbers to collaborate on classwork and study sessions. 3. Go to the CAS and Library! You can schedule study groups and meet with peer tutors and specialists on subjects such as English and Math. Trust me when I say, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THESE SERVICES!! You will not regret it. 4. Ask questions! A professor’s job is to educate students. If you don’t take the time to study, it will show. Please, if you do not understand something, don’t be shy! You’re spending your money on these classes. Take advantage! I hope these tips are as helpful to you, as they were to me. Good luck and go Spartans!
MEET THE CAYUGA COLLEGIAN STAFF
Meet Zakary Haines SPORTS WRITER Hello everyone my name is Zakary Haines and I am a sports writer for The Cayuga Collegian. I am a huge fan of sports no matter if it’s Football, Lacrosse, Basketball, etc. You name a sport and I normally have something to talk about it. I follow a lot of national sports leagues but Cayuga athletics I follow, too.
Besides being into sports, I am a telecommunications major and a first year student. I am part of the R.A.T. Guild and the college radio station, WDWN. My hope is one day I get to call games on TV and/ or radio. Maybe even cover a live stream game like the NFL did this past season with the Jaguars and Bills game in London, which was live streamed on Yahoo. Outside of school, my hobbies include exercising, video games, reading, and playing sports. I follow eSports tournaments and have my own YouTube channel. I see YouTube as a new way to showcase new shows like Let’s Plays, Blogs, and informational videos. YouTube has the means to become the next big thing if it hasn’t already. Maybe even the biggest thing.
It is easy to see that Cayuga Community College is a student -orientated college. The college offers a wide array of resources to help its students succeed not only academically but professionally and recreationally as well. One such example is CCC’s Activity Hour, which is an hour that is set aside to allow students to participate in the various activities that take place on campus. The Activity Hour is from 11:00 AM to Noon every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All CCC students are required to pay an Activity Fee with their tuition which pays for the club budgets, campus activities, speakers and performers, so it is essential that students take advantage of these amenities to ensure they get the most value out of their time at CCC. Whether it is joining one of the many clubs on campus, participating in a campus activity, or watching one of the speakers or performers, there are many other things you could do to maximize your experience here at CCC. Many clubs and organizations are actively seeking members to help them grow and expand. One example on the Auburn Campus is the Student Activity Board or SAB which is the organization that books the speakers and performers and puts on many of the campus activities. In recent years, SAB Auburn has
seen its membership decline due to its members graduating and new members not surfacing fast enough to fill the vacancies. The Collegian is always seeking students on the Fulton Campus to help report on news and happenings up there, but have had a difficult time securing Fulton contributors. There are over a dozen clubs and student organizations on the Fulton Campus and more than two dozen on the Auburn Campus, all of which are in need of new members. A complete listing of the current clubs and student organizations was provided in the orientation package you received. Take the time and read through them to see if there are any that you find interesting and would like to join. If there are any that peak your interest, contact the advisor to find out when they meet so you can attend the meetings and if you want to commit to joining that club. If there isn’t a club or student organization which interests you, there is always the speakers, performers, and campus activities that are held on a weekly basis and are free to students. Be sure to watch for the announcements of each on the bulletin boards, in your college email or through word of mouth. You want to be as active on campus as possible, otherwise you are not going to have the full experience of what is Cayuga Community College.

No one really knows why, but thousands of crows make Auburn their home every year. Yes, they can be a nuisance, but you learn to live with them. Being that these birds are a traditional sight in this area, the Art Club, run by Assistant Professor of Art Melissa Johnson, has decided to create crow sculptures. The Art Club was recently awarded the Daniel C. LaBeille Grant. They have used this grant to bring in visiting artist Janie Darovskikh to collaborate with the students in the club on the making of the sculptures. Professor Melissa Johnson says the sculptures will be placed outdoors around the campus when
completed. She says the exact location is yet to be determined. “Clay is my love, my passion,” said artist Janie Darovskikh. Her passion for the Arts has led to success. She has received many grants, art awards and is recognized for her many achievements in the art community. Michelle Smith states she joined art club because she “can be creative, and can use her hands”. She is also very excited to be working with Janie Darovskikh and contribute in the making of the crow sculptures. If you are a student seeking a creative outlet, or a new way to manage your stress, Art Club is for you!
