CAMPUS!

OPINIONS Here’s how I see it! Caleb Slater

FANTASY FOOTBALL I have never been a fan of the sport football, but I have watched more football this season than in my entire life and the reason boils down to two words, Fantasy Football. I am a person who normally watches one NFL game a year, the Super Bowl. I like it because of the hype that is built around it and for the very expensive and often elaborate commercials that air during the game. I don’t know all of the NFL

The Collegian wants to know what is going on up there! Be a Fulton Correspondent or just email us your news at Cayugacollegian@ gmail.com teams and until two weeks ago, I didn’t even know what a bench player is! Needless to say, I was very surprised when one of my friends asked me to join his Lattimore Hall Fantasy Football League. I still think I was asked because they couldn’t find anyone else, or they wanted an easy victory. Either way, I am glad that I was asked because it gives me a reason to actually watch the games and I enjoy the company of food and friends over Sunday night football. One of the league members, James Auringer said it best when he told me, “it’s fun (Fantasy Football) in the sense that when you get all of your buddies to get involved with you, it gives you something to talk about other than every day life.”

Group wants Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill By Caleb Slater, Editor-in-chief The Harriet Tubman Boosters, a non-profit organization that, according to their mission statement seeks to, “Keep the memory of Harriet Tubman’s remarkable life’s work in the forefront…” is endorsing the womenon20’s initiative to get a woman on the $20 bill by the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment. It will be 100 years since the United States gave women the right to vote on August 18, 1920.

Womenon20’s is a non-profit organization that started the initiative to get a women on the $20 bill. Back in May of this year, they held a survey to determine which heroic American female best deserves to be represented on our currency and ultimately Harriet Tubman, a.k.a. “Black Moses” was deemed the winner. Since then, the Tubman Boosters have collected over 350 signatures for a petition that was sent to the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Jack Lew.

The government’s response back was to instead move the initiative to the $10 bill because that is the next bill up for redesign, in 2022. Tubman Boosters President Laurel Ullyette fired back by saying, “I personally do not want to see Harriet on the $10 bill. That is an insult!” She then goes on to say, “Andrew Jackson has no business representing our country. He was a slave trader who didn’t want anything to do with paper money and made his wealth over the hard work of others.” In addition, Harriet Tubman descendant, Pauline Copes Johnson said in a letter to Secretary Lew, “She was the woman who helped change the outcome of these United States. Slavery was the shame of these United States and she deserves this recognition. Women are half, if not more of the population on this continent.” Norman Lee, Director of Student Activities at Cayuga Community College, has since reached out to the Boosters and through the CAYA (Come as You Are) club has attained more signatures. For more information you can contact the Harriet Tubman Boosters President at lullyette@gmail.com.

WDWN staff meets with White House leaders

Senior Advisor to the President, Valerie Jarrett (back row center), and Kyle Lierman, Associate Director of Public Engagement and Senior Policy Advisor (back row, far right), met with the leaders of college radio in the Roosevelt Room of the White House.

Cayuga Community College radio station, WDWN, was one of five college radio stations, nationally, that was invited to represent the medium of college radio at the White House. The visit took place on Thursday, September 24th as a prelude to National College Radio Day, which will take place nationwide Friday, October 2., 2015. WDWN Station Advisor Jeff Szczesniak and CCC student Lauren Maltese met with Senior Advisor to the President, Valerie Jarrett, and Kyle Lierman, Associate Director of Public Engagement and Senior Policy Advisor, to discuss, on-therecord, the government’s “It’s On Us” campaign to end campus sexual assault. Additionally, the group then met with Cecelia Munoz, Assistant to the President and Director of the Domestic Policy Council, and James Kvaal, Deputy Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, to discuss the topic of college affordability. After the meetings, the group took a tour of the West Wing which included a photo session in the Press Briefing Room with Josh Earnest, Assistant to the President and Press Secretary. This was followed by a lively discussion in the Roosevelt Room on the role of the media, and the importance of student media especially. College radio was specifically discussed as well.

At the conclusion of the visit, Szczesniak was presented with a letter from President Obama wishing WDWN a successful College Radio Day 2015 and also stating: “By keeping the legacy of college radio stations alive and strong, students on campuses from coast to coast experience the thrills of sharing and discovering media and creating stimulating programming. In doing so, they are lending their talents to a tradition that has been unfolding for generations and inspiring others to join in the work of shaping our future’s course.” “I applaud the efforts of college radio stations across the country, to participate and promote College Radio Day. College radio has been an institution on college campuses for decades. And there are previous generations of Americans that have learned the broadcast industry by volunteering at college radio stations. There are also generations of college students that have been exposed to new music and new ideas by listening to college radio stations. So I certainly want to compliment and encourage those students that are involved in college radio and urge you to continue to keep college radio the kind of rich and independent source of entertainment that has long served college students and college campuses so well.” - Josh Earnest, Assistant to the President and Press Secretary.
