Secret Ingredient Sought World-Wide Marcellus is the home of the Internationally-famous Chocolate Pizza Company

Bonnie Hanyak and her world-famous chocolate pizza & wings

The map on the wall of The Chocolate Pizza Company says it all. Bonnie Hanyak’s unique-tasting chocolate pizza & wings are craved around the globe! Bonnie puts a push-pin on the map for each order she fills from a distant location. After 15 years, she’s pushed quite a few pins into the wall. The reason her chocolate pizzas are so popular? A secret ingredient that has been passed down from generation to generation in Marcellus. It’s Marcellus’ own Martha Jane’s original English Toffee. According to Hanyak, back in 1919, Martha Jane spent $5 on a candy making kit. Her mother even scolded her for spending so much money. Within two years, she had 50 people working for her to turn out the most delicious nut crunch anyone had ever experienced. Eventually the Cummings family of Marcellus began to make the famous “almond butter crunch.” For more than 40 years they made and sold the sweet stuff from their home on North Street in Marcellus. Now Bonnie owns the secret recipe and adds it to her decadently delicious chocolates. -continued page 6-

Angel Heart Gifts A visit to Marcellus wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the best gift shop in Central New York-Angel Heart Gifts. Owned and operated by the mother and daughter team of Donna Incaudo and AnnMarie Clark, Angel Heart Gifts prides itself on stocking items that are sure to please everyone on your gift list. “We are so happy when people come in on their way to a wedding or shower and they know they’ll find the perfect gift, card, AND it will be wrapped and ready to go,” said AnnMarie Clark. It all started nine years ago when the mother and daughter team decided to go into business for themselves. “We thought a gift shop was something the town needed and it was something we always wanted to do,” said AnnMarie. Originally starting out in a storefront on North Street, Angel Heart Gifts moved to a brightly painted picturesque Victorian House on Main Street six years ago. AnnMarie says Angel Heart tries to carry items you wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else. “Our customers say we have the best selection of greeting cards anywhere. My partner gets all the credit for that, she’s the one with the patience for that kind of ordering,” she said. Angel Heart Gifts has a selection of pottery items and stocks many collectibles including Lang, Camille Beckman, Snowbabies, and Mary Englebreit. Angel Heart Gifts is the exclusive regional outlet for an assortment of Peggy Karr handmade fused glass giftware. Each piece of Peggy Karr glass is made by artisans using techniques similar to those used by the ancient Mesopotamians over 3,500 years ago. The colors are hand-stenciled on to a layer of hand-cut glass and a second layer of glass is then placed on top. The entire piece is placed on a mold and kiln-fired, fusing the glass and the color into one. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind work of art. Peggy Karr Glass products are decorative and functional. They’re meant to be used and enjoyed. When you stop by Angel Heart Gifts, you’re always greeted with a smile. AnnMarie and her mother have certainly won the hearts of the Town of Marcellus. “The best part is talking with customers,” said AnnMarie. “I enjoy chatting with them and hearing how their day is going. Some of our customers have become good friends. They all bring their out-of-town company in to meet us when they are visiting.”

OFF THE CUP

with Sharyn Malinowski

The Greater Marcellus Community Chamber, working with Hillside Gardens of Seneca Turnpike in Marcellus, helped to coordinate flower basket arrangements for village merchants to beautify the outside of their shops. Chamber member Jennifer Griffin of Subway came up with the idea of creating matching flower arrangements to unify the exteriors of village merchants.

Everyone loves a great cup of coffee, I do, (and I just happen to know where you can get a great cup of coffee in Marcellus! JavaJuice Cafe!)...but did you know your garden could use a Sharyn Malinowski good caffeine fix too? It’s true. The secret to a healthy, full vegetation is right in your morning cup. Coffee grounds mixed into the soil can give your garden the nutrients it requires. Even a vegetable garden could use

a good brew now and again. Coffee grounds have nitrogen and potassium which vegetables love! Coffee grounds can also help to speed up your compost pile. The grounds have a carbon-nitrogen ratio of 20-1 making them act as green materials when added to a compost pile. However, be careful. Keep your grounds to no more than 25 percent of your composting content. What’s even better--you don’t even have to brew your own pot. Just come to JavaJuice Cafe in Marcellus and we’ll give you the grounds for your garden--free! Sharyn Malinowski is the owner of JavaJuice Cafe, serving gourmet coffee, specialty drinks, breakfast and lunch, located on Main Street in Marcellus.

Chocolate Pizza now has authentic Gelato -continued from front page“I’m always amazed. People will taste my chocolate pizzas and recognize the taste as something they had as a child from Marcellus,” explained Bonnie. “The stuff is legendary.” If tempting chocolate delicacies weren’t enough, The Chocolate Pizza Company is now offering authentic Italian Gelato. Gelato is an incredibly smooth and creamy ice cream. The rich treat is available in a variety of flavors. Bonnie lives in Marcellus with her husband, John. They have two grown children, Brett and Brenda, and five grandsons.

The Chocolate Pizza Company gave away free samples of their new gelato ice cream during Starlight Shopping in May.
