Pickin’ and Grinnin’
Bluegrass has become Marcellus’ natural resource of fun It’s like stepping back in time to a country dance in a Kentucky holler. For the past seven years, a unique jam session, which started with three Bluegrass musicians looking for a place to play, has grown into a Friday night sensation at the American Legion hall in the Village of Marcellus. All you need is an instrument and the ambition to play. Or you can sit back, keep time with your foot, sing-along and share a cup of coffee or a cookie. “Sometimes we get upwards of 70 people or more,” explained one of the phenomenon’s original pickers Bob Hayden of Marcellus. “And some weeks, it all fits together so well, we’re playing until two or three in the morning.” The cost is only $2 per person to pay for the heat and lights. Many bring cookies to pass. The music is homespun and traditional from songs like ‘This Land is Your Land’ to ‘In the Sweet Bye and Bye’. Everything is cordial and comfortable. The room is lined with every type of stringed instrument you can think of. The players share a smile and their songs. They take turns leading a song by announcing which key to play. “We like to hear any type of music,” said Hayden. “We have two fellows who sing ‘Danny Boy’ so well, it’ll bring tears to your eyes.” Some are seasoned, others are newly musically motivated. “We’ve had many spectators turn into players,” said Hayden. “It’s

Marcellus Bluegrass presents Bluegrass Goes to School
With the appetite for Bluegrass music in Marcellus growing, Marcellus Bluegrass, the group behind the open Bluegrass music jam session every Friday evening at the Marcellus American Legion, has developed an all-day Bluegrass event with proceeds going to the Marcellus School Music Department. It’s called Bluegrass Goes to School. Doors open at noon, Saturday, October 15, 2005 at the Driver Middle School auditorium in Marcellus. The event features performances, jam sessions, and workshops. Notable Bluegrass groups including Sunnyside String Band, McCarthy-Paisley Band and the Marcellus Bluegrass Band will take the stage at various times during the day and evening. Tickets are $12 advance sale and $15 at the door. The charge for students is $5 for the evening show. Students are free in the afternoon. Advance sale tickets can be purchased at Crow Hill Hardwoods, Nightengale Mills, NAPA, Main Street Pharmacy and the Chocolate Pizza Company. The evening culminates with a special appearance by the famous Abrams Brothers from Kingston, Ontario. The Abrams Brothers launched onto the music scene in 1999 at the ages of 6 and 9. They quickly created a stir in local, national and international music communities. The boys, now ages 15 and 12, demonstrate a talent for music far beyond their years. John and James proudly play bluegrass gospel music. Initially classically trained on violin, they have since expanded their musical scope to include playing fiddle, mandolin, guitar, upright bass, banjo and resophonic guitar (dobro). Their harmony vocals are exceptional. They are most often accompanied by their father, Brian and grandfather Wayne, both also accomplished musicians and vocalists. John and James have been blessed with a special talent and passion for their music and it shows. They are magnetic young men, who, together with their father, grandfather and musician friends from

The Sunnyside String Band featuring left to right: Aaron Moen, Thom Russell, William Light and Lou Steigerwald, will play at Bluegrass Goes to School October 15th at 12:40 p.m.
Sunnyside String Band at Bluegrass Goes to School The Sunnyside String Band formed three years ago after the members met and performed together at the weekly Marcellus Open Bluegrass Night at the Marcellus American Legion. At first the band was just a hobby for its members, but quickly grew into a professional touring group. The members of the “Sunnyside String Band” are William Light of East Syracuse on vocals and guitar; Thom Russell of Marcellus on vocals and mandolin; Lou Steigerwald of Fayetteville on banjo; and Aaron Moen of Lansing on vocals and fiddle. The group has adopted the popular, traditional Bluegrass song “Keep on the Sunnyside” as their theme song. “It’s a song of hope and encouragement,” explained band member William Light. “And that’s what our band is all about.” Light encourages people to come out and experience a Bluegrass live performance. “It’s a much difference experience in person,” said Light. “The music is more vibrant. You can really see the skill of the musicians and also the joy they experience while they’re playing.”

The Woolgathering Weaving Shop Wants ‘Ewe’ Learn to knit, weave or spin or just share a cup of tea at Marcellus’ newest shop. Anne Dougherty has raised sheep for more than 19 years. She recently turned her passion for wool into a dream come true. Her new place, The Woolgathering and Weaving Shop, 19 South Street in Marcellus, is a haven for those who knit, spin or weave or would like to learn. Doughtery’s new shop offers lessons in knitting, spinning and weaving. Dougherty encourages everyone to come in, share some tea and good conversation while they work on their projects “It’s comfortable,” said Ann Milner of Syracuse. “Anytime you go somewhere where yarn is the focus, you find kindred spirits.” Milner is knitting an Afghan for a fund raiser at the Wescott Community Center. “ I have already experience a tremendous response from people,” said Daugherty. “People are coming back to craftsmanshi.” Doughtery says people are proud to say here’s something I made. She say they also get satisfaction from going from sheep to mittens. “It’s a return to a simpler life. All of this can be done in a power outage,” said Dougherty. In addition to the spinning, weaving and knitting classes, Doherty offers a rental time on her looms. “It’s more fun to knit when

Her door is always open for people to come and share their projects or to get advice on their projects. Doughery says there is nothing like wool. She says natural fibers will keep you warm and dry despite the weather condi-
tions. She says man-made fibers can’t do that. The shop hours are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM; Tuesday and Thursday 10 AM to 9 PM; Sunday noon to 3 PM. For more information about
