From the desk of the Head of Campus “Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me. Going to bed at night saying that we’ve done something wonderful... that’s what matters.”
- Steve Jobs
With emphasis on “we”, Steve Jobs understood the value of the paradigm shift where “we” is the paradigm of “I”. In every way then, we would like to acknowledge the support of our parents, teachers, Board and community in ensuring that 2013 has been one of the most successful years we have celebrated at Theodor. On behalf of Mrs Allanson, Mr Lees and our respective management teams, I would like to thank you all for your support of our very special school. Despite the financial downturn and despite the proverbial ‘doom and gloom’ of local and national affairs, we have endured. We will continue to do so into the coming year and beyond. I would appeal to you as I have appealed to you in the past: while you have the opportunity to share your goodwill and talents with our school, please do so. There cannot be a more gratifying pursuit for our parents than to be a part of the development and growth of Theodor Herzl School. After all, you have a vested interest here. Before I close and wish you all a relaxing and safe holiday, I would like to express our appreciation to the editorial committee and design team for this bumper edition. Enjoy the read and our very best wishes for 2014. STEPHEN FAY HEAD OF CAMPUS: THEODOR HERZL SCHOOL
Message from Chairman of the Board The 2013 academic year, which has been a very good one for Theodor Herzl, is fast drawing to a close. It has been a year in the life of the school that we can look back at with a sense of justifiable satisfaction. Who can forget? • The enchanting production of “The Little Mermaid” in the primary school and “Aida”, which rocked the high school. • The Theodor Eco-Club winning the Eastern Cape first prize for their ‘space blanket’, manufactured from recycled packets of chips, before proceeding to third place in a national competition promoting environmental consciousness. • The many academic achievements in a variety of national Olympiad competitions. • Achieving third place in the NMMU Lego Robotics competition. • Two gold awards in the President’s award programme. • The primary school art exhibition at the GiFi gallery. • The awarding of provincial and national colours in various sporting codes to numerous learners. I initially thought that 2013 had been good to Theodor Herzl. Then I thought “No!”, we deserve what we achieved through a combination of hard work, reaching our potential and realising the fruits of the unique, synergistic dynamic that exists between our professional staff, learners and parents, supported by Theodor’s lay leadership and support staff. So we were good in 2013, but remember what Warren Buffett said: “being good is no excuse for not being better” in 2014. Can I add any more, other than to thank everyone who contributed to Theodor Herzl’s winning team: our lay leadership, professional and support staff, parents and pupils. Congratulations to our editorial staff that have created such a magnificent “family album” chronicling the events that have made up the rich fabric of our special school during 2013. The literary, photographic and artistic contribution to the magazine is one of a commendably high standard. Mazal tov to all concerned! The Chairman and School Board wish you all well for Christmas, Diwali, Eid Al Adha and Chanukah. Ian Meyer Chairman, THS Board of Governors

Messages And Farewells
Message from the Editorial Committee It is always with some sadness that we close the book on another successful Theodor year. Flipping through the condensed version of 2013, as recorded in this magazine, how proud we can be of the achievements of our tight little family! As always, this magazine represents a snapshot of challenges, achievements, hopes, dreams, highs and lows: a year in the life of the ones you, and we, hold dear. The challenge for us, as the Editorial Team, is to accurately reflect the abundant experience! We hope that you will enjoy immersing yourself in Theodor, that you will relive with us a year that has made an indelible mark, and that, like us, you will close the cover of this magazine with a full heart. Our matriculants are on the brink of a new beginning; life awaits them! We have no doubt that they all have a glittering future ahead of them. Matrics, our wish for you is that you use all the courage, determination and knowledge that you acquired at Theodor to open all these many doors; to reach for your dreams and grab at every opportunity that presents itself. To those returning, we look forward to another exhilarating year together. May we take this opportunity to wish you and your families everything of the best over this holiday season. May we continue to stand together, embracing all that Theodor, and 2014, may hold in store. - Penny, Ingrid, Robin, Lisa, MJ, Janice and Daniel
Warm Welcomes Theodor welcomes Mrs Candice Parkin (Steel Band Director, Drumming and Percussion Teacher and Choir Master), Mrs Nicole Viljoen (Remedial, Gr. 2) and Mr Chris Stottelaar (Gr. 7 Class Teacher, Gr. 6: Eng., Afrikaans, LO and Phys Ed.). It has been a real privilege to welcome these three innovative, energetic, dedicated and hard working educators to our staff complement. In the year that they have been with us, they have already stamped their personalities on syllabi, and hearts, and have really made their mark. We hope that they feel as delighted with their new appointments, as we are having made them!
Welcome to Theodor!

Messages And Farewells
Fond Farewells MIGNON JEFFERSON Mignon started teaching at Theodor Herzl as a relief teacher in Grade 2 while Michelle Walker was on maternity leave. It soon became apparent that Mignon’s gentle approach encouraged many pupils and made them feel at home in her classroom. In fact, the pupils renamed her “Mrs J”. Each day she upheld her motto: “Every child is a bundle of promise and potential!” Her creative approach excites many a Grade 2 pupil and as a colleague she is empathetic, kind and she certainly has a delightful sense of humour! Mignon is a woman of integrity and high principles. I am always touched by her faith and her commitment to her family. She leads by example: always well prepared and enthusiastic!
PAM WALSH Sadly we lost ‘Aunty Pam’, as she was known to our pupils, very suddenly this year. Pam ran our kosher tuck shop for two years, always welcoming staff and pupils with a smile and a ready hug for the little ones when they arrived with a clutch of coin, unsure of what they wanted to buy. Fortunately for us all, Pam’s daughter, Nicky, had always assisted her when she was very busy and was able to take over the reins smoothly when her mum passed away. - Liz Ross
Mignon, you are going to be missed! We wish you well in your future endeavours! - Chantal Klackers
JENNY MEIRI
It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Jenny Meiri at the of 2013. Jenny has served our school in so many ways. She has been such an asset to the Grade 1 and 2 classes; always giving of her best to the children and the teacher. Her interesting and creative “Fit for Life” lessons were always a success and her passion for teaching Judaica will be sorely missed. It is truly a loss to the school, but we wish you and your family every blessing as you start a new chapter in your career. Thank you, Jen, for all your dedication and love. - Nicole Viljoen
RITA SCHULTZ After almost two decades at Theodor Herzl High School, Mrs Rita Schultz ended her tenure teaching Business Studies and Economic Management Science to enjoy a well-earned retirement. Mrs Schultz will be missed for her creativity, strong ethics and dedication. To many pupils she had been a confidante and inspiration, even after they left school. To her colleagues, Mrs Schultz will be remembered for her compassion and tenacity when she faced cancer. Mrs Schultz was the guest of honour at our Annual PrizeGiving evening where she handed over the prizes. At a touching farewell arranged by her colleagues she said the Theodor Herzl family had been a blessing that she would always treasure. We wish Mrs Schultz a happy, fulfilling retirement. - Adina Pieters

Pebbled mural offers a unique lesson in tolerance for Theodor Herzl pupils
Memory Wall
Tolerance, respect, accountability, social responsibility, compassion and integrity - the six core values upon which Theodor Herzl Schools’ holistic education is built – are each artistically represented in a serene and inspiring pebbled wall mural completed this year. The ‘Memory Wall’ is dedicated to the 1.5 million Jewish children who died in the Holocaust and urges all who view it to remember the wrongs of the past, to reflect on their own lives and to encourage tolerance in the future by living these universal values today. Theodor Herzl’s Judaica department, led by Sheila Liss, was the driving force behind the enduring gift to the school. The pebbles were collected by the pupils of Theodor Herzl Primary School and artistically used by Theodor Herzl parents Paola Horak and Janice Mendelowitz to create the mural of seven stone labyrinths, each in the shape of a tree. “The wall offers a ‘thinking spot’ at which to remember and reflect on our lives and the choices we make,” Mrs Horak explained. “Theodor Herzl teaches its pupils to revere all these values, but it is up to the individual to strive to live with them. The stones in the mural symbolize two ideas. The first is memory: in Judaism, it is customary to leave a stone on the grave of a loved one to symbolize the permanence of our memories. The second is tolerance that comes from embracing diversity: each pebble on the wall is different in shape, size and colour. They remind us that everyone has a place in this world and teach us to be tolerant of our differences.”

Pre-Primary School 2013 Pre-Primary
lthough 2013 has been a year filled with worldwide uncertainty, it has been a great year for Theodor Pre-Primary and I feel a sense of stability, growth and a wonderful sense of belonging. We are surrounded by new technology, economic challenges, educational differences and diversities as well as globalization. Expectations are shifting and changing continuously in these troubled but exciting times and it begs the following question: How do we as a Pre-Primary school meet the challenges of 21st Century learning and thinking? Over the course of the past few years we have started to look at what we believe to be key to success in later life and that is the building and fostering of resilience in children. Additionally, they need the opportunity to become highly creative, innovative and technically advanced problem solvers to complete the necessary skills set required. We strongly believe in developmentally appropriate practice where a child develops a strong sense of self and the ability to recognize and acknowledge his or her unique and personal strengths. Our children need to play, and just be... they need time to grow to enjoy their surroundings, to sing and laugh, and to learn together with their peers. I am sure you will agree, as you peruse this magnificent publication, that Theodor Herzl PrePrimary has been able to provide a learning environment which does justice to the core values and ethos of our unique, multicultural school.Congratulations to the Editorial team for a sterling job well done, as well as to Lisa Webb and Bianca Crawford for the collation of the Pre-Primary material. message from the primary school
Primary School 2013 Primary School
T
here is a bushman legend which says: Every morning in Africa a springbok wakes up and knows it must outrun the fastest lion to remain alive. Likewise every morning a lion wakes up in Africa and knows that it must outrun the slowest springbok to remain alive. Therefore it doesn’t matter whether you are a springbok or a lion – you had better wake up running. We in education also need to wake up and run to ensure that what we teach is relevant, preparing children to meet the demands of the future as well as the individual demands of pupils. Schools are called upon to reflect on the four pillars of learning: Learning to know, Learning to do, Learning to live together and Learning to be. Theodor Herzl has, over the years, made a conscious effort to ensure that its pupils are confident and critical thinkers who have been nurtured through each of the above mentioned pillars. As one pages through this magazine I am confident that this will become evident to the reader. This year Theodor Herzl Primary awoke sprinting and, in my opinion, the school has enjoyed a year of incredible activity and success. Our pupils have been challenged with olympiads, expos, excursions and camps, music, drama, sports tours and matches, IT, community outreaches and an academic curriculum of the highest order. Our whole school production of ‘The Little Mermaid’ was certainly one of the highlights of a busy year. Audiences were treated to a tiny glimpse of ‘a part of our world’ - a world where there is a happy celebration of each child’s unique gifts and talents. The support of the entire Theodor ‘family’ has been exceptional this year and this is vital if a school is to be successful. I once again salute the staff - their devotion to our children and their willingness to go beyond the call of duty are truly inspirational. I also wish to thank the Board of governors who have worked tirelessly to develop our school and the Can Do Committee who have continued to bring the ‘family’ of Theodor together. My sincere thanks also go to the magazine committee for their efforts in ensuring that our highly successful year is captured for posterity. Kevin Lees Primary School Headmaster

CAN DO COMMITTEE Theodor Herzl’s amazing Can Do Committee certainly gets it done! We are grateful to Rika Haasbroek, Andrea Exley and their generous, creative and hard-working team for all that they have accomplished this year. This small, dedicated group of parents, usually consisting of a representative or two from each grade, starts with a vision, a list of the school’s ‘need-to-haves’ and ‘nice-to-haves’ … and then does its best to make the magic happen. The more hands, the lighter and more fun the work, so please raise yours in 2014 if you’re keen to get involved. 2013 SUCCESSES include a fantastic overhaul of the Aftercare/Music House facilities, sponsorship of the Lego League, beautification of the quad, picnic benches on the sports field, sound system for the hall, classroom projectors, canvas blinds on the Pre-Primary playground and more! The team is also responsible for the delicious and oh-so-stylish spreads at the Father’s Day breakfast, the Pre-Primary School’s Concert Tea and the Matric Luncheon. A HUGE THEODOR THANK YOU!

Drama continues to flourish at Theodor Herzl under the dynamic guidance of Robin Williams. We, as a school, took great pride in presenting Disney’s The Little Mermaid - an ambitious undertaking for any school, but even more so for a small school such as ours. The wonderful result of many exhausting hours of hard work was a tribute to the commitment and dedication of the indefatigable and indomitable team of Robin Williams, the staff, the pupils and the parents of Theodor Herzl Primary. This production was also an indication of the wealth of talent and enthusiasm that exists amongst our pupils. An enormous undertaking such as this is an extension of the education of the school, as so much more than classroom teaching is gained. Participating in a musical is one of the most rewarding experiences any young person can have as it provides pupils with so many valuable development opportunities. It is important to note that every one of our pupils was involved in this production – all 168 of them! All who saw The Little Mermaid enjoyed its vibrancy and energy, and, as the final curtain fell, joined me in saluting the Director and cast on their fine success.

What a year it has been!
I have had the opportunity to direct two Disney musicals: one, the work of Sirs Elton John and Tim Rice, Aida for the High School, and the iconic music of Alan Menken’s The Little Mermaid for the Primary School. It has been such a joy to create magic with some amazing young talents. I know our audiences fell in love with the cast as they became... “Part of our World”! Robin Williams, Director

A WINDY DAY
Grade 2
Joshua and Megan were walking to school. The wind just blew and blew. The branches of the trees swayed in the wind. The washing flapped on the washing line. Leaves swirled around on the pavement and the sand stung their legs. The wind was icy cold. It was winter. Joshua and Megan leaned into the wind clutching their uniforms. The wind tugged at their blazers... ...They got to school. It was warmer in the school. The teacher saw that they were so cold so she got them a blanket. Suddenly the bell rang and they went to lines. When lines were over all of them went to class. The teacher had a surprise, no homework. So they all watched a movie, when it finished it was home time. So all the parents came to get the children. When they got in the car they went home and had dinner. Paige Craven ...Joshua and Megan finally got to school. The teacher looked at all of them writing down homework. All of them were so cold. The teacher gave them all hot chocolate. After school it was time to go home. Joshua and Megan did their homework and then they went to the movies. After the movies Joshua and Megan got home. They were so tired that they fell into bed. Mom woke Joshua and Megan up for dinner. Anga Butshingi ...Joshua and Megan were on their way to school. When they got to school and unpacked their bags. The teacher came close and gave them a piece of cake and hot chocolate. Afterwards the teacher called Megan to read. When Megan was done the teacher was surprised that she gave away five minutes extra break. When the bell rang it was time for lines. Afterwards it was home-time. The class ran outside with excitement. They went to the car and drove home. When they got home Megan and Joshua went to bed. Afterwards mom braaied meat. Ovayo Khumalo
42
...When they got to school they put their bags down. Then they looked for their friends. When they found them they all played soccer. When they were playing soccer Megan fell and her arm was very sore. After Megan fell the bell rang and all of the kids ran very fast. When they got to lines she told the monitor that her arm was very sore. They went to get a plaster. After she got a plaster they all went to class. Then they were freezing so the kind pretty teacher let them have hot chocolate and watch a scary movie. The teacher gave them a cosy blanket and they all cuddled up. They ate popcorn. Then they all went home. When they were at home their mom and dad made them a nice soup. Edward Falconer
Grade 2
...Joshua and Megan eventually got to school. The children got into the school and unpacked their homework. When the bell rang the children ran to lines. The teacher said, “Come back inside children.” When the children got back inside, hot chocolate was on the table. “Thank you so much” said the children. “You’re welcome” said the teacher. Then it was break time, Afterwards it was home time. Then their mom and dad picked them up.Mom and dad took them to the movies at the Boardwalk. Kathlynne-Anne Leurs ...Eventually they got to school. They unpacked their bags and rushed to their friends. They started playing “ hungry, hungry hippo”. The bell rang and they ran to lines and went into the classroom. The teacher was happy to see the children. The teacher’s name was Miss Sunny. She was the best teacher in the whole wide world. She was even in the newspaper. She adored the kids and they loved her. The bell rang it was time for break. Soon it was time to go inside. Miss Sunny gave all the kids a blanket and popcorn. Then she gave the kids hot chocolate because they worked very very hard. It was the end of the day, they walked outside. It was flooding as they left Sunnyside. That’s the name of the school. Megan couldn’t stop thinking about Joshua, they had only met last week. They were neighbours. Soon their moms and dads were here. The end. Jessica Farley ...The children got to school and they saw their bff. The teacher was sad because the children were so cold. So, the teacher decided to give them hot chocolate and a film. The teacher saw the children’s lunchboxes. The teacher said that the children need more than this. “I will give them brownies.” School was over. Their mother fetched them from school. The dad made soup. Mmmm that looks delicious. When Mom was praying the children were very hungry. The children ate when Mom was almost finished praying. Mom was amazed when she saw Joshua and Megan ate all of the soup. Tlotlo Masisi

THE DAY MY HOUSE WAS SURROUNDED BY THE BEACH
Once there was a girl named, “Sam”. It was Saturday morning, and Sam jumped out of bed because she was going to go to the beach. Sam was so excited. Off she went! “When are we there?” said Sam. “Soon,” said Mom. When they got there, Sam jumped into the sea. She got onto her surfboard, and waited, and waited for a wave. Then, suddenly, she saw a lay floating past her in the water. She paddled as fast as she could and gathered it up. “Look, Mom,” said Sam, “I found a lay.” What Sam didn’t know was that it was magic. Then it was time to go home. When they got home, their whole backyard was full of sand, sea and seashells. “Goodness!” said Sam. She ran to her room. “It must have been the lay,” said Sam. The next day she wished and wished that it would all go away because her mom said, “If that hasn’t gone by tomorrow I will take away your dog!” The next day, the beach was gone. Sam was a bit sad that the beach was gone, but happy that she could still get to keep her dog! Sophie France

Kids Who Care Coffee Shop
Grade 3
The Grade 3’s generously gave of their time and efforts during the July holidays, and Third Term, to do chores, bake, make up trays of tea, coffee and muffins to serve to patrons at a “Kids Who Care Coffee Shop”. The children creatively decorated, and waited tables, serving rather long suffering, but ever generous, supportive and kind parents, grandparents, and friends of the school. The money raised from this venture is to go towards the purchase of a gift for an Aids orphan. Any additional monies raised will go towards a financial donation for “The House Of Resurrection: Aids Orphanage”, our chosen charity. Despite the obvious fun intrinsic in the day, the children were also encouraged to practise their Maths and money skills when adding, subtracting, making change, buying a gift and calculating vat. More importantly, even, this project helped to inculcate values of social conscience, and social responsibility into our little ones, helping to make them aware that with great privilege, comes great responsibility!

How the rhino got its wrinkly skin Once there lived a rhino. The rhino was on an island by himself but he quiet liked being by himself. There was delicious fruit everywhere and he just loved it. One day a squirrel arrived and he was terribly lost and hungry so he walked into the rhino and saw so much fruit and he asked the rhino if he could have some fruit, and the rhino said no. So the squirrel got really angry. The next day when the rhino took his skin off to go bath in
the river the squirrel put some bread crumbs into the rhinos skin and put glue on the zip, so when the rhino put his skin back on he was terribly itchy and tried to take it off but the zip was stuck so he had to stretch the skin so he wouldn’t be itchy anymore AND THAT’S THE STORY OF HOW THE RHINO GOT ITS WRINKLY SKIN. Book Review
The title of the book is Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Jeff Kinney is the author. The main characters are Greg Heffley and Rowly Jefferson. Greg Heffley is a video person and he does not like reading and outdoor activities. The book is a story. I learnt that not everybody is the same. I would tell them it’s a funny book not really educational but it is a nice book. Sabiha Dudhia
I loved it when we would go through the tunnels. We also had a temptation walk and a pipe challenge and we did a talent show in the night. After the talent show we had hot chocolate and showered and went to bed. We were also going to have a midnight feast but sadly we were not allowed to and the supper was so nice. Monkeys also attacked our cabin and ate our food, that was funny and when we went on a night walk teenagers jumped out from a tree and yelled anaconda it was funny and I only told you some stuff I am afraid. Last but not least I want to say thank you to AJ , Marcus, Keenan, Clinton and Lusanda for a great time. Caelin Falconer
After that we had to go and put on sun block and a hat then we went to the hall where we learnt a sort of handshake thing it went like this: he would say leaders and we would clap and then put two hands on our chest and say hoo hahh yeah I liked learning that. Afterwards we had to make a flag the people in my team were myself, Val, Shavonne, Lihle, Shameek, Jan, Blake, Dean, Amy, Kaylin and Sabiha. It was hard to think of a good and interesting name for our team but finally we all agreed on the name; Shoshana . Our flag had hands on it and said how can we help you in your good times and bad. We also had to make a war cry ours wasn’t the best but it was a war cry so we did not care. We had a vote and Val and Shameek won. So they were our king and queen. I found it quite fun when we had to build a raft. Our facilitator was a little annoying because he woke us up with he’s alarm clock. The swamp crossing was very funny. Most of the people were connected with nature like Blake. It was wonderful when we had to go on the morning walk. The thing that I enjoyed the most was Bushpigs got talent. The food there was

Bushpig Adventure
We had so much fun with our facilitators Marcus, AJ, Keenan, Clinton and Lusanda. Mrs Goldberg said she found a huge spider in her shower! We had a fabulous time doing all our activities like marsh mellow towers, swamp crossing, flag making, duckweed collecting, walking, running and making our rafts. We saw divine flowers and beautiful plants! The food Lizzie made was super and all the fun we had was such an experience and seeing all those monkeys too! We had a fun talent show at night and got put into groups and learnt how to work as a team. We had so much fun with nature and each other. We had an amazing scavenger hunt for nature’s flowers and berries and moss and also had a water pipe challenge.

Well if I had to explain it in simple short words I would say that it was spectacular, fun, daring, exciting, fabulous, and enjoyable and we had to work as a team in nearly all of the activities and I will never forget the EXPERIENCE that came with everything that we did!!!!!!! I LOVED IT SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I will explain it in longer words and will say everything that we did, well when we got there we first were shown to our cabins which were a nice size and could fit all the girls in.

I loved the part when the camp fire was lit.+ I CANT WAIT FOR NEXT YEAR! Blake Cotterrell
We all got bitten by mosquitos and monkeys stole our food and came into our cabins! We got put into groups for our flags and made our team name Bontambeti and enjoyed making our flags together. It was all so: Divine, super, awesome, fun, cool, amazing, great, wonderful, beautiful and exciting! Everything was incredibly amazing and cool, especially the camp fire and seeing the big monkeys. On the way to the dam we saw big vegetable tunnels and tractors! It was the best 2 days ever!!! Tyler Bosworth

BOOKS
Books are very cool They are educational They are super cool. Shameek Chetty
For the past few weeks we have been going to rehearsals it has been a lot of work but so much fun . My mom so shocked when she heard they were to be more than a 100 kids in the play and so was I. Everybody was so excited for our costumes. Mine was a nice peach at the bottom and at the top were sequins in a pattern of a flower I said that I looked like a walking disco ball . Ariel is doing so well and prince Eric`s voice is a dream. Plus life is awesome we go home at 12 o clock , no homework, we watch movies at school and we can wear civvies. The photo shoots were pretty cool I liked the grade one`s costumes they looked really cute. I made some new friends too. My mom helped paint the scenery. The props were awesome and the dough and flour for the chef made it really life like. Sometimes I got tired especially when we had a show that ended at 9:00. Caelin Falconer
Once upon a time there was a elephant he was a happy elephant. But he was also the tallest animal in the jungle this ment he was the biggest and strongest animal in the jungle. One day lion the king got all the animals to come to a special meeting at gorillas den. Nobody knew that gorilla was the adviser though. What is the meaning of this said hyena? It is probably another one of gorillas boring speeches said jackal quietly. Be quite all of you shouted elephant. If king lion came you would all be punished said elephant angrily. Just then king lion came and said thank you elephant. We are all in danger said lion. We are losing water as we speak because there is a dam and we won’t drink water eventually said lion. Elephant said how can I help after all I am the biggest and strongest animal here. Lion said very well all you have to do is attack the dam until it breaks. So elephant went to the dam and bashed it and rammed it with his tusks but before he could make the final blow he saw that his nose got stuck in the dam. So elephant pulled and pulled but when he got his nose out it was as long as it could ever be and that is why elephant’s nose is so long. Ethan Klibansky

I guess it’s kind of fun in the play. I’m with my friends and stuff. Being the seahorse is super fun! I’m also a lagoon animal with my friends and girls. I have a mike so I can say my line. It was very scary but it all worked out at the end. The kiss was awkward. The chefs were so funny. Thomas Too

I would give each person a home and find a job for them I will do that by earning money to give them a home and I will give them jobs myself. Everybody will respect and clean the country and that there will be plain green grass every person who helps clean the country will be paid R100,00 per day of cleaning. There will not be a homeless person or animal and all animals have to be treated with respect and no badly treated animal in my country. If somebody swears will be fined with R100,00 and that money will go to charity. Every child and adult will be educated. There will be a huge ice-cream store one ice-cream costs R5,00 and they will have all the ice-creams you can get and also all the flavours. I want to be a funny, kind, loving, rich and a special president. I will treat my people with love and care. Kaylin Davidson
If I was the president If I was the president I would follow in Mandela’s foot- steps and be a good person just like him. I would not be one of those people that bribe other people to vote for them and never pay them back. I would make it forbidden to cut down trees for nothing. If anyone litters they will be in serious trouble. I would say “stop making guns and drugs! I would hunt down who ever tries to kill any animals. I would stop the killing of animals for us, we don’t need that, G-D gave us fruit, veggies, sun, water everything we can not make. I would stop pollution. Amy Von Ruben
It has been a lot fun doing the play. Coming to rehearsals every night. Having all of our make up done took a long time in the end we all looked fabulous!!!!!!!!!! Why do zebras have stripes?
Why I like my School!
Dear Dairy
Why I like my school.
One day there were a bunch of white horses roaming the savannah. The sun was very hot and there was very little water so they stayed in the shade so they could stay cool. Then some people came to have a braai and then they went home but they left their broken glasses and chip packets. It was still very hot and then out of nowhere a fire started. All the white horses ran for their lives. When the fire ended the horses weren’t white anymore they had black stripes. So that’s how a zebra got its stripes. Valentina Havvas
I like my school because the teachers are so KIND and the pupils are really NICE and also KIND to play with. THE DAY I CHANGED INTO A BOY
When I woke up last week Monday I was shocked. I had turned into a BOY!!!! I got such a fright. My mom called me but she said my name was Chris, I was confused. She never noticed a thing different about me. I had to go to school in long shorts it was terrible, I hated it. I wanted to wear a dress.
Look At Our Amazing Science And Technology Projects! We Made Paper Maché Masks And Clay Coil Pots
Grade 5
On my last day of school, we made wormy pots (coil pots). When we made them, they looked like worms so I called them wormy pots. I painted my pot yellow with a red stripe in the middle and wrote Pooh in the red stripe. It’s now “Pooh’s honey pot” Gabbi Angileri To make the clay pot, I used clay that dries quickly. It was fun making the pot. We had to take a big piece of clay and we rolled it into a sausage. We then had to make it thin. After that we painted the pots. Ashenn Govender.
It was so much fun making a clay pot. First I got clay, then I rolled it into seven long coils. Then I made a flat circle. When it was dry, I painted it. I painted the top blue, the middle red and the bottom green Keagan Streak It was fun making a clay pot! First I made small sausages out of the clay. Then I made the bottom of the clay pot. When it was nice and flat I put on the clay sausages and started building the pot up. At the end, my clay pot looked a bit wobbly, but when it dried, it looked much better. Later, I painted it blue. I am proud of my wobbly, blue clay pot! Joan Hager
First we got a clump of clay and then we had to make the base of it. When I finished that, we made this strips out of the rest of the clay. That was the hard part. Then we stacked the one on top of the other. Then we left it for the night. The next day when it was dry, I painted it. I painted mine white. After all that it looked so nice. Amber Charlewood
We made a mask. First, we made a paste with water and flour. We then took newspaper and put it in the paste. We stuck it on then we waited for it to dry. When it was dry, we pulled off the paper plate. Now we had a hard mask. After that we painted it. I first painted it black, I waited for it to dry and then I put blue spots on one side. That is my mask. Christina Boueri
The first thing I did to make my clay pot is I took a piece of clay from the big blob I had. I started rolling it until it looked like a snake shape. I then did the same with the rest of the clay. Oh and I made a flat circle too. Then I put all the pieces around the flat circle until all the pieces were done. We waited a few days for it to dry so that we could paint it. I painted mine red, blue and silver. Lathitha Mhlaba
The mask was extremely fun to make. First we got a paper plate, then we cut holes for the eyes, mouth and nose. Then the easy but stick part came. We went to the art room and got sticky glue, then we had to take newspaper and stick it on the back of the paper plate. We got all sticky and messy, but the problem was, we didn’t know how many layers we had. When it dried, we decorated it. It was so much fun. Ariela Leibowitz
When we had to make a clay pot I was very excited. To make a clay pot we had to get clay. After we got our clay, we made little rolls of clay for the side of the pot. We also made a bottom for the pot so whatever went inside would not fall out. After that we put the rolls of clay on top of each other. Then when it dried, I painted my clay pot blue. Georgina Davidson We rolled the clay into a ball and then we flattened it for the bottom. The rest of the clay, we rolled into a sausage shape. After that we let the clay pot dry. Timothy Maleka
64
The first thing we did, was get a paper plate. I cut a circle in the middle of the plate for the nose, then I cut 2 circles for the eyes and the finally the mouth. When then pasted on a 3D nose. My teacher helped me to paste the nose on. Then we were ready to stick the strips of paper on. Next, we peeled the paper plate off and painted the face. Samuel Nell Making a mask was lots of fun! First we got given plain white paper plates. Next we went to the Science Room to stick newspaper on our plates, we had a special mixture to stick the newspaper onto the plate. It was a mixture of flour and water, it looked disgusting, but stuck the newspaper rather well. We had to put 7 layers of sticky newspaper strips to make our mask. Once we had finished that, we went on to decorating and painting. Mine was black and white with dots! Everyone had lots of fun, I hope we do it again. Montana Barwick
My Dad
My dad has very short, black hair and is tall and athletic. He has averaged sized blueish, brown eyes. He has a flat forehead and he is humble and kind. He has very smooth skin and an oval face. His nose is straight and he has well brushed teeth. He dresses very formally and smart. My dad loves to build bikes, ride bikes and spend time with us. He has a deep voice, but when he is in a kind, good mood, he has a sweet voice. However, when he is in a bad mood, he has a raucous voice. By Seth Ferreira The Day I Changed into a BOY
8. 00 am yesterday I woke up I stretched, yawned and my memory was spinning in huge colourful circles in my head. I did not know what happened but I was an ugly, smelly boy. I went to my huge pink draw but it was black and all I saw were sloppy shoes ugly clothes and boring patterns on the clothes and shoes oh they were disgusting. Then I rushed quickly downstairs my mom was appalled she was wondering what had happened to me what happened to you? I didn’t know what to say. Immediately the huge red bus came and my mom pushed me hard out the door and said goodbye and then I got on the bus. On the bus I tried to feel confident but I defiantly was not and I slumped in my hard and unquotable all the children laughed at me. When I finally got to school I saw all my friends mingling with each other. A funny new looking teacher spotted me, “Is your name Andrew? She asked. She thought I was the new, funny, weird child, Andrew but she didn’t know my real name was actually Ariel. After that it was class! I felt terrible and extremely afraid to go to class so I waited bored outside. I was thinking, are the mean children going to show empathy, are they going to show respect. Finally break, hooray! Then I said, “ yay,” I could go play with girls but before I went to the girls something terrible happened, the boys asked me to play soccer, I was so terribly horrified because I did not know how to play soccer, so I kept catching the ball instead of kicking it. I felt like a weird chicken with some fantastic, specialist ducks. Then all the mean boys laughed at me - I felt so gloomy. I think they giggled and laughed at me because they were specialists at soccer and I am not. Finally the most boring day of school was done I was extremely happy and relieved. When I got on the disgusting bus people thought I was as bad as a gangster but actually I was a sweet, innocent and pretty girl. When I got home I collapsed on the couch. My mom just came home from a hard day at work. After she came back I went to my awesome, fantastic room I laid down on my soft fluffy bed and I woke up and I realised the whole ugly, sloppy, hard and disgusting boys day was just an amazing huge dream. By Ariela Leibowitz My Family

Grade 5 Collecting for the Walmer Angels Collecting for the poor was really fun because we got to see the smiles on their faces. We as a class collected a lot of things but Georgina and Ariela brought the most. It was so sad to see how little they have compared to us. Aunty Glenda was surprised at how many blankets, toys, clothes etc one class could collect. By Lathitha Mhlaba and Cassidy Dennis
Collection for the Poor There were huge piles of stuff at the back of our class. The people who brought the most were Ari, Georgi and Sam. We had blankets, clothes, teddies, toys and shoes. It was so amazing seeing the smile on Aunty Glenda’s face. About a week later, she sent us phots’s of all the children wearing the clothes and some smiling happily. It was lovely to see the children so content. By Gabbi Angileri and Seth Ferreira
HELPING THE COMMUNITY The Grade 5 community project for the year was the “Walmer Angels” We collected used clothing, shoes, toys, books, puzzles, stationery, school bags, blankets and pillows. During Life Orientation, we also learnt how to knit so that we could make teddy bears for the small children. Our knitting club also continued to make hundreds of squares which were joined together to make lovely warm blankets for children less fortunate than us. Our very large collection (10 boxes!!!) was handed over to Aunty Glenda from “Walmer Angels” and passed on to the children. She sent us photographs showing us how our collection helped the needy. Well done Grade 5’s!!

MY LUCKY ESCAPE ON THE ROAD I was very lucky or else I would not be alive. I was very lucky I escaped or else I would not be telling you this story. This was to be this luckiest escape of the century. The wind made a howling sound and for every step you would take you could feel that lovely cool breeze as it hit your face. I was waiting for my friend to arrive from the shop. I was thinking, maybe I should have brought my skateboard, seeing as how smooth the sidewalk was. I saw my friend, his hairy arms coming out of his shirt, his small black shoes and his thin legs covered with his (strange enough) rainbow coloured pants. As he crossed the road a taxi came towards him, less than ten meters away, driving at full speed. I ran and pushed Tyron out of the road landing on my stomach. By this time the taxi was about five meters away. From my stomach I pushed myself forwards, harshly landing on the rough sharp stones. There I was with scars, bleeding, I looked hopeless. My friend with almost no cuts lifted me up and called my mom and dad. Tyron, mom and dad thought I needed to go to the hospital but I convinced them that I was fine. Of course I needed to stay in bed for about a week but after that I was fine, although my body was covered in scars.

Nathan Franklin

Eendag was daar ‘n hiena. Sy naam was Zumba. Hy was baie ernstig.

Lucky escape on the road He was lonely in his cell. It was deadly quiet; all you could hear was the slow dripping from the pipe above on Paul, the aliens head. All Paul did was sit on his bed, he didn’t care about how disgusting his pillow smelt, and his mattress that smelt like dirty socks. Today was the day he was going to escape from this dreadful place called area 51. He watched as the last of the armed patrol went by his cell. Just as they rounded the corner he quickly grabbed his universal tool from under his mattress; and put it on the lock of his cell. For a minute all that could be heard was little clicking noises coming from the device. The cell door opened; then Paul took hi s universal tool off the lock and walked straight out into a long hallway. He ran to the left and came to a “T” junction and stopped dead in his tracks; when h heard shouts from his cell. Paul looked up at a sign which read “ Hangar to your right; staff personal vehicles to your left”. Paul heard the guards coming, he hesitated, and went to the left. Paul got to the parking lot and quickly hid behind an Audi. He heard the guards come past and one said” He’s not here, he probably went to the hangar”, then guards left. Paul put his universal tool on the lock of the Audi door handle and after five seconds of clicking noises the door flung open and Paul hopped in. Then he put his universal took on the ignition and after a minute of clicking and beeping noises the car roared to life. Paul slammed his foot on the accelerator and sent him and the car slamming through the garage door. Paul looked at the built in GPS it said he was 50km from area 52 where they had his ship. Paul slowed down as he approached area 52; around its perimeter was an electrified steel wire fence; he put his foot down on the accelerator and slammed into the fence knocking it down. He sent the car into a roll and bailed out as the Audi smashed through the hangar door; then he ran to his ship. Alarms were blaring in Paul’s ears as he ran to his ship; guards were streaming through the hole in the wall. Once he was inside his ship, he hopped into the control chair and started the engines. As they warmed up he plotted a course back to his home planet. He fired the engines and blasted straight through the roof and back to his home.. Sebastian Alexander
Dear Daniel You won’t believe what happened in June; I had the most amazing holiday, in America! My family and I went to Disney World, in Orlando, Florida. It was a holiday of firsts, first rollercoaster, first massive waterslide and first turkey leg. I cannot believe it can get that big! Guess what happened at school? The teachers announced that the Grade 6’s and Grade 7’s could do Paintball as a sport. I really want to do it with you, so don’t you dare stay out of school for another week, get better soon! It is every Wednesday at 4pm to 5pm. I have started it and it is awesome! Seth has been acting very strange over the last few weeks; the more I think about it, I am sure he comes from Mars! For example, last night he made a peanut butter sandwich and decided to ride his bike at 3am; I mean, who does that? I can’t wait to have you back at school, we all miss you. I woke up to the sounds of thunder, BANG!!!! BANG!!!! BANG!!! I ran to my window to see what was happening. All I could see was darkness and pouring rain. The lights were flashing and I saw ash settling on my windowsill. All I could hear was thunder, the screams of the people in my village and children crying. I watched as lava got closer and closer. I was finding it harder and harder to breathe, I needed to cough, and when I did, I couldn’t stop. Blood came out, all mucuslike and then I knew - I was going to die. James Muir

I am so grateful for all the teachers that have put up with me and given me the knowledge to go forward and continue learning and experience new things. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?: In ten years’ time I would like to hopefully be with my partner that I will spent the rest of my life with, as well as I would like to be studying to become a doctor. MY DREAM CAR
This letter is just to tell you about news here in Port Elizabeth. We miss you dearly and think about you all the time. Many things have happened since you have been away. Cousin Jane fell pregnant just after you left and had her baby on the 9th May. They named her Kim. Tom was able to come back on shore leave for 1 week but went back after five days because the army needing him. Aunt Betsy bought that farm she always wanted, but wasn’t able to stay there for long because we had a bomb attack on Tuesday the 15th. We are running low on supplies and shops haven’t got enough food in stock and are being put out of business. Women are now allowed to help for the war as you might have heard and Mom and I are going to work in the munitions factories. Sadly more and more children are being sent away every day. Kate and I saw five trains getting ready to leave. Jake, my new beau, was told he had to go and fight in France. It was terrible saying good bye to him not knowing whether I might ever see him again. It has been really heart- breaking around here. When the postman delivers the letter to the wives and families saying their son or husband is MIA or killed fighting for his country, we all feel a terrible loss. Those who hear bad news fall to the ground in tears! We hope you are keeping well and will be coming home soon. We love you with all our hearts. Stay strong! Your loving sister, Jess Jessica-Marie Elliott
Many people say that I’ m a man with expensive tastes. I can’t lie, some things that are really pricey do appeal to me, and cars are one of them. I dream about this car day and night. It is a car that brings you to another world, possesses you with the spirit of ecstasy; it is the Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé Convertible. Roll Roycé have made many fine cars but nothing like this one. It is a four- seater convertible coupé. It has a number of outstanding features such as electric doors, luxurious leather seats and monitors installed at each seat. I once had an opportunity to see this car and take a photograph of it in Cape Town. When the day come for me to see this car and take a photograph of it in Cape Town - I was so excited, I couldn’t wait! I took my time dressing and put on my nicest cloths. I was getting ready for my important photograph . We got to Future Exotics Showroom to take the photos. There I was in the showroom, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! I had always dreamt about it ... I saw it ... it was unbelievable ... time slowed down for me. My father told me to smile - the digital camera’s battery had died. I then had to take a photo with my brother cell phone. I can’t complain because I still got to see the car. I will always remember this R6 million car. I hope whoever buys that Rolls Royce takes good care of it. Hey, maybe I one of these good days I will be driving a Rolls Roycė. Mafundo Mabula
LOOKING FORWARD TO TURNING 18
A saying that I particularly like is “Do what makes you happy”, because it is telling you to live your life to the fullest. Another quote that is meaningful to me is: “If you are absent during my struggle, don’t expect to be present during my success”. So many people only want to be with you when you are doing well. For me it is important that they must like me for who I am and be with me even when things are not going so well. I believe that everything happens for a reason and for the best. If I should die today, my only regret would be missed opportunities and chances. My view on the issue of social media and cell phones is that they can have negative influences on the younger generations as they can cause many unnecessary problems like bullying and exposing children to things they should not see. Amber Dickson
Turning eighteen is a big deal. There are so many things to look forward to. Eighteen, the age of independence - might sound like the greatest thing ever. Being eighteen comes with quite a few perks. You can legally do all the things you’ve been doing since you were thirteen. You can vote and have a say in the governing of our country, you can drive a car and you are your own boss. But … that doesn’t mean it comes without responsibility. Turning eighteen tests your accountability and responsibility towards things like drinking, smoking and doing drugs. It is our duty as individuals to make sure, that once we are eighteen, we have good morals and work on becoming great citizens of the future. Once you are eighteen you are allowed to vote, so make sure you have a good idea of who exactly you would like to lead our country and why. It is your responsibility to make sure that you have chosen the best candidate for the job. Once you are eighteen, you are legally old enough to go to prison if charged with a crime. When you are eighteen you are old enough to get married, inherit property or money, make or revoke a will, consent to any medical treatment and join the military without your parents consent. Turning eighteen comes with great responsibility but also with joy and independence. Make sure you balance out the two, and become an outstanding individual. Robyn Perils

I AM I FEEL
I AM CHIMA OPARA.
I’m 13 years old and I’m from Graz in Austria. I went to the Bips Krones Primary School for four years, then I switched to the BRG Kepler High School. In Bips Krones, we spoke a bit of English, but not much. I couldn’t speak English all that well, and I could understand a bit. In BRG Kepler, my English improved so that I was able to speak a bit more and understand it a little better. BRG Kepler was a school that specialised in Maths and Natural Science. We had an observatory on the roof. High school was very difficult because of the Maths and I stressed often. In 2011 my mom decided to do a travel through Africa for five months. In 2013 we moved to South Africa. I started at Theodor at the end of the second term. Chima Opara

JOURNAL – A RECORD OF MY THOUGHTS
5 June 1942 Dear Jake
Grade 7
How have you been? I am writing this letter to tell you that Jane had her baby on the 1 June. It has been really hard not having you here, since you left to to serve in the war. Oh, Jake little Britney is just so beautiful. She really is! She was born three nights ago in your bedroom. The doctor was very brave to walk from his house, through the deserted streets to our house, even though he only lives four streets away. She has blonde hair just like her mother. Her name is Britney. I am truly sorry that I didn’t write sooner, but I was helping Jane with Britney and the post office has been bombed. It is so sad. We have been having a really hard time with all the bombings. Out rations don’t go very far since there are eight of us now, not seven anymore. Do you know the Fellini’s from across the road? Their house was bombed last night. Luckily they weren’t in the house at the time. I really hope you come home soon. We all really miss you, and we want you to see Britney. Your dear sister, Katie Alexia Gutsche
I WON THE LOTTO
It was a quiet Sunday morning … I decided to go to BP garage to get a lotto ticket. After I bought one, I went home. As soon as I got home, I went and sat at the dining room table and thought about which numbers I should circle. I thought and thought. I finally decided that my numbers would be 28, 13, 3, 20, 9, 5. When I was done circling and checking, I got into my car and drove back to BP garage to hand it in. When I had done that, I went home and thought about what I could buy with twenty million rand... Maybe I could buy a beautiful farm with stables, paddocks and a huge pool. I could also buy a professional horse that can jump 2m or more. It would be a white or grey horse and it would never buck or rear. I would have professional lessons, and that person will help me to become a better rider. Now I will have to wait to see what happens … just one week (it seems like such a long time!) A week passed and the nerves and excitement kicked in. They were going to tell us the numbers in just an hour! Half an hour to go… Now just ten minutes… They were announcing the numbers … 28, 13, 3, 20, 9, 5… I have those numbers! I won! I won! Now I just had to wait for the SMS. Five minutes passed. I just got an SMS. Oh my word, it’s from the lotto people! I won it! Hooray, I won the lotto! I got into my car and drove to claim my money. I then thought again about what I was going to buy. I bought my pretty farm and a horse. I also decided to pay for professional lessons. I also bought things for my horse like a saddle and bridle. I am so happy that I won the lotto! Kelsey Davidson Issue 12

WHEN I WON THE LOTTERY BUY A TICKET! WIN R20 000 000 There it was in red and white on the television! I wondered if I should buy a ticket. I kept on wondering until the very last day. Eventually I scraped up the courage and bought my ticket. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that I had won first prize. I was overcome with absolute shock and was delirious with happiness and joy. I HAD WON. Now I could plan for a richer life. First, because I like fast cars, I would buy myself Polo, the sports model. I began to imagine myself driving this fast car with the wind blowing through my hair and my friends watching with open mouths from the pavement. What a life! Sometime I had to come down to earth. But not now … because I have always loved antique jewellery, I decided to buy myself a really special bracelet. I knew just where to find it. In order to get my brother on my side, I would buy him a wellpedigreed Yorkshire terrier because he likes small dogs. That ought to do the trick, and my family could live in peace. And finally, I would book a wonderful world cruise with all the trimmings. This could be something that our family would remember forever. Back to reality … I would be sensible and invest the rest of the money in the bank so that I could follow my chosen career and live happy ever after. Miranda Van Zyl-Rudd

Outreach Community visit to Motherwell
It was my birthday. My friends and I went shopping at Sandton City in Johannesburg. I saw the most beautiful clothes in the windows of the shops. I was thrilled when my friends bought me a lovely pair of shoes. My friend showed my designs to Louis Lee, the chief designer at Chamois Fashion House. He said I was talented and artistic and he would like to see more of my designs, especially the ball gowns. My designs were accepted and went into production. A month later was the grand fashion show where my designs would be shown. It was exciting, but I was very nervous. The ramp stretched before me. The music started and the models paraded in the ball gowns. The photographers rushed forward to capture the designs. Lights flashed. Louis Lee took me on to the ramp. The audience applauded and the show was on television. I became famous and very rich. My dream had come true. Nicole Too

Sports Tour 2013 On Tuesday 18 June two buses set off down to the Garden Route filled with excited soccer boys and hockey girls. This was our first ever joint tour. Mr Stottelaar, Coach Jo and Mrs Goldberg accompanied 25 Grade 6 and 7 children on this fun filled few days. Harkerville Forest Cabins was our base and we were hosted by Oakhill, Knysna Sports School and Plettenberg Bay Primary School. We found it challenging playing soccer and hockey at Oakhill on a half size Astroturf field, but the hospitality was great and they view breathtaking. Braaing burgers with “Smokey Robinson” also known as Mr Stottelaar and Coach Jo and Mrs Goldberg staying in “ burnt smelling” for the rest of the week. Knysna Sports School is a sports academy. We played a second team and lost 1-0 in the girls hockey and their soccer boys overpowered us completely. We have great fun on the “fuffy slide” and volleyball court at Harkerville in the morning and then left for Plettenberg Bay Primary School were we played our last match. The hockey girls triumphed over Plett and they boys had showed persistence in their game. Friendships grew, many laughs and fun times will be remembered. We had new experiences and played sport with passion. Thank you to our sponsors, the parents, XMECO Engineering, MUGG & BEAN, Algoa Toyota and Teloc supporting us!

The U/13 Girls Tennis team has had a very successful year. We have won 90% of our matches. I would just like to thank Coach Petro for organising all our matches, and for coaching us in the cold mornings and boiling hot afternoons. I would also like to thank Mrs. Bizinos and Mrs. Goldberg for supervising us at our tennis matches. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to all the girls on the U/13 tennis team for playing all the matches, and doing so brilliantly in them.

Samuel Horak & Jaden Dickson Gr. 5 U/10 Girls Tennis
The Theodor u/10 Tennis team played exceptionally well this season. What I think is great about our team is that we have won more than we have lost. But what is really special, is how our team works together and supports each other. A very big thank you to Coach Petro for everything, and, WELL DONE TEAM!

The mixed doubles was a huge success this season. We only lost one match this whole season. There was a lot of teamwork on the court. We played lots of highly intense matches and only lost one of them. In every match we played, we strived to improve, and did, indeed, become better and better match by match. On behalf of the Mixed Doubles Tennis team we would like to thank Coach Petro for helping and guiding us. I would also like to thank my teammates Daniel Barreto, Alexa Gutsche, Daniel Goldberg, Jessica-Marie Elliot, Daniela Cicognini and Amber Dickson for a wonderful season.

“Talent is overrated, ambition is dangerously powerful”, that is a saying that comes to mind when I think of my team! Our team is filled with girls who have a strong passion for the sport we play. We were all put into this team because each and every one of us has three things: skill, speed and most importantly, ambition. We have had an amazing season, winning most of our games, including those we played on tour. We’ve progressed immensely thanks to our coach, Mr Stottelaar. We don’t just play hockey because it’s fun, ask anyone of my teammates, we play hockey because we can’t imagine our lives without it! Field hockey is part of us. We are not only a team, but also a family. I know for a fact that each and every one of us can look back at this season U/14 GIRLS HOCKEY and think that all the injuries, extra sprints, and lectures, were worth it. Primary Sport
When I was in Grade 1 at Theodor Herzl a good friend of mine was Rafael Sapere. At that stage he was already an Eastern Province chess player. During some of the break times Rafael and I would play chess and I realised that I liked the game. I also thought that I could be good at it. Soon after that I became the u/8 Eastern Province champion. And that is where my serious competition started. I became a regular member to the Eastern Province chess team and have already represented my province at three Nationals. In 2011 I was placed second in the u/10 category at Nationals. In 2013 I was placed third in the u/12 category at the South African Closed. I have also played in various international chess championships in the open division (this means that I have had to play against grown-ups). For instance, I played in the Gibraltar Open, the Botswana Open and the Commonwealth Open in India. 2013 has been a very busy year for me. I have already played in the South African Closed tournament as well as the Commonwealth Open. I will shortly be representing South Africa at the African Youth Chess Championship where South Africa will be competing against 40 other African countries. At the end of the year I will be part of the South African team that will attend the World Youth Championship in Dubai. My coach, Grandmaster Pablo Lafuente, helps me a lot. Having such a good coach is a privilege. He makes all the hours it takes to compete internationally fun. He also travels with me. My father always says to me that if I love the game, the game will love me. That is the way it is now, and I hope, will always be. Jack van Zyl-Rudd Grade 5

STEEL BAND 2013 The three steelbands at Theodor Herzl have filled the passages with music every morning! A junior, senior and high school band was formed with 35 children to create a vibrant steelband program encouraging children to learn the love of music and rhythm while having fun. With the addition of various steeldrums and a new percussion section, the bands have been able to explore variety in music, different instruments and develop a love of being part of a band. They have grown from strength to strength this year with all the bands having their turn to showcase themselves at the various functions during the year.

Message From The Rabbi
A
Our Jewish Life
fascinating drama is being played out in the smartphone industry as we speak. Companies that were once upon a time the dominant leaders in the industry have all but disappeared and companies that were never major players in this business have now the lion’s share of the market. There is much to learn from the rise and unfortunate demise of the Blackberry smartphone. Blackberry pioneered the technological breakthrough that one could receive and send e-mail on one’s cell phone. Blackberry was the undisputed leader and sold millions of cell phones all over the world. However, the company made one tragic mistake. It failed to update its phones in any fundamental way. Thus when the iPhone appeared and the Android operating system became popular, Blackberry did not respond with its own innovations and when they eventually did produce a new cell phone it was too late. The power to innovate and be the leader of the pack is critical to the success of any business and is the main mechanism that generates outstanding achievements in all spheres of life. How wonderful it is that Theodor Herzl School is on the cutting edge of education and is an acknowledged leader in ensuring that each child’s potential is realised. As the year 2013 draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity of congratulating everybody involved in this amazing school and may G-d bless our efforts so that 2014 will be a year of even greater accomplishments. Rabbi S Bloch
Message from the Head of the Judaica Department Natan Sharansky, an Israeli politician and human rights activist, said that “only a person who is connected to his past, to his people, and to his roots can be free, and only a free person has the strength to act for the benefit of humanity.” By celebrating the Jewish festivals and observing commemoration days throughout the year we try to strengthen our Jewish learners’ connection to their rich heritage. Universal values and tolerance for all are cherished and promoted. 2013 started with the inspiring visit of Nadav Ben Yehuda, a man who epitomises the values we hold dear at Theodor Herzl School. This young Israeli gave up his dream of reaching the peak of Everest, a mere 300 metres away from the summit, in order to save the life of another climber. A tree was planted in the Biblical Garden on Tu Bishvat, the “New Year of the Trees.” Pesach, the festival of freedom, was celebrated with a mock Seder. The story of the exodus from Egypt, from slavery to freedom, was told in words and song. The activities of the second term started with a dignified commemoration of Yom Hashoah. Memorial candles were lit by pupils and teachers of all cultures and faiths in tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. Israel’s 65th day of independence celebration followed a Yom Hazikaron assembly in memory of Israel’s fallen soldiers. Lag B’Omer was celebrated around a bonfire on a balmy evening and Yom Yerushalayim afforded the opportunity for fact finding combined with amusement and laughter in a quiz organised by the Judaica Forum. On Shavuot, non-perishable foods, fruit and vegetables collected by the primary school were donated to the PE Jewish Benevolent Society and to the Khaya Cheshire Homes. In May, over fifty pre-primary, primary and high school staff came to the Glendinningvale Synagogue on Friday evening to experience and share some aspects of the Jewish ethos with the Judaica staff. The day of Tisha B’Av, was chosen to mark the completion of our ‘Memory Wall.’ It is dedicated to the Jewish children who perished in the Holocaust. Paola Horak and Janice Mendelowitz, Theodor Herzl parents, used pebbles collected by our primary school to create a beautiful mural that represents the six core values of the school and reminds us to make sure that history does not repeat itself. Our Founders Day, Shabbat Nachamu celebration highlighted the talents of our pupils in the primary and the high school. More than a hundred parents, children, staff, members of the board and of the Jewish community participated in a Shabbat service and in the dinner at the Glendinningvale synagogue. Special assemblies took place in all three schools for the Tishrei Holy Days. The Jewish learners participated in a Tashlich service near the Baakens River, symbolically casting away their sins and starting the New Year with a clean slate. The learners came to the high school Sukkah to learn about the Four Species. During the year we were visited twice by youth leaders from Cape Town and are looking forward to welcoming Ori Leizer, a Shaliach from Johannesburg. A Channukah assembly celebrating the victory of light over darkness will bring a very exciting, activity-filled year to a close for the Judaica Department. I would like to wish all the best to our Judaica forum, Jessica Mandel, Seth Bulkin, Jodi Goldberg and Gemma Meyers in their efforts to promote the Jewish ethos of the school and sincere thanks to all the members of the department for their contributions to the Judaica programme.

A LIGHT FOR TOLERANCE AT HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY
Our Jewish Life
Confusion and chaos reigned for a few minutes in April when High School pupils suddenly found themselves herded into groups according to their hair colour and gender. The exercise offered the 21st century teenagers a small window into how Jews and other victimised groups might have felt in Europe during World War ll - and helped to prepare them for the stirring annual Holocaust Remembrance ceremony held at the school. Pupils of all cultures and faiths lit six large candles and dozens of tealights in tribute to the six million Jewish men, women and children who died during the war or in the Holocaust.
Guest of honour, Peter de Decker, addressed the assembly, recounting his childhood during his childhood in The Hague, Netherlands. He vividly recalled the sirens, bombs and hunger, as well as people having to wear yellow stars on their clothing that identified them as Jewish. De Decker has lived in Port Elizabeth since 1959 and his granddaughter is a pupil at Theodor Herzl. Thanking the audience for their “respectful participation in remembering the victims of man’s inhumanity to man during the dark years of World War ll”, Theodor Herzl’s Head of Judaica and Hebrew teacher Esther Levitan urged pupils to be mindful of their attitudes in society. “Remember, you are the future. You can make the world tolerant or racist, by your actions or lack of them. It is your choice – your right and your responsibility,” she said.
PESACH SEDER
All Primary and some High School pupils enjoyed a wonderful mock Pesach Seder (a ritual Passover Feast), to mark the beginning of this Jewish holiday. Pesach is a festival of liberation and a special time of year, not only for Jewish people but for all as it offers universal values of freedom and a reminder that one nation should never oppress or be oppressed by another.

PURIM!
Theodor Herzl is transformed into a carnival of colour each year when the High, Primary and Pre-Primary celebrate the joyful Jewish festival of Purim together. Parents and family are always invited to enjoy the fantastic annual parade, when pupils and staff all vie to out-fancy dress each other! Traditionally Purim commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian empire, a story recorded in the Biblical book of Esther. The event is commemorated with feasting and rejoicing.

Shavuot
Our Jewish Life
Fruit, veggies and towers of tinned fruits were offered to Khaya Cheshire and the Jewish Benevolent Society as part of Theodor’s annual Shavuot festival celebration in May. Shavuot marks both the harvesting of wheat and ripening of the first fruits in Israel, but also significantly commemorates the day on which God revealed the Torah, including the Ten Commandments, to the Israelite nation at Mount Sinai
ANGEL OF EVE
REST Theodor Herzl pupils were inspired by a visit from a heroic man dubbed ‘the ang el of Everest’, Nadav Ben Yahuda. At just 24, this gutsy young Israeli sacrificed summiting Everes t, in a dying Turkish climber. It was favour of rescuing a left him with frostbite, but tha choice that has t has allowed him to influence the lives of individ uals around the world.

High School 2013
ver the years, Theodor Herzl has become known for the standard of its theatrical O productions. This year was no exception. The production chosen was Sirs Elton John and Tim Rices' AIDA. The more we worked with the material, the more we fell in love with the stirring tale, wonderful music and beautiful lyrics. The young actors brought their portrayals to life with passion and maturity and this is testament to the culture of seriousness with which Theodor takes their cultural activities. “True satisfaction comes from achieving with excellence. - Robin Williams

Prizegiving Address by the Chairman of the Board
Awards
Honoured guests, ladies and gentlemen, learners: good evening and welcome. I have a special welcome tonight for Dr Denzil Levy, honorary life president of the United Hebrew Institutions, who at the age of 96 is still active in communal service and making his contribution to Theodor Herzl and civil society. Dr Levy is the last surviving member of the founding school board and is a shining example to all of us who, in the ‘me’ generation, seem to struggle increasingly to give of ourselves to causes that are greater than ourselves. Please join me in a round of applause for Dr Levy, whose commitment to Theodor Herzl is unsurpassed. In my 2012 speech night address, I made mention of Malala Yousafzai, the teenage Pakistani schoolgirl who said to the world “I want to get my education and I want to become a doctor”. In circumstances of horrendous terror and intimidation, she spoke out about her passion for education and became a symbol of defiance against Taliban tyranny. In 2013, Malala was invited to address the United Nations making a very moving speech about the pen being mightier than the sword. This was followed by her being nominated as the youngest candidate, at age 16, for a Nobel Peace Prize. None of us could fail to be inspired by this heroic story. Malala has not only spoken passionately about her education, but also about her school in Pakistan and how precious it was to her, simultaneously highlighting the role that her father has played in both her formal and informal education and how girls in England, where she is now resident, take their education for granted. Schools are comprised of governors, educators, parents, learners and support staff, whose collective behaviour becomes the school. Consequently, the behaviour of this alliance of partners makes Theodor Herzl what it is and therefore the behaviour of each member of the Theodor family is important, because this defines our school’s identity. My question tonight is about what guides our personal behaviour and how this affects the collective, in this case our school, but it’s equally applicable to making choices about personal behaviour in the greater society. The concept of introspection and connecting with an inner wisdom is central to developing self-discipline and becoming a moral, sentient human being, which for me is the supreme achievement of any school; especially, when you have simultaneously assisted each learner in reaching his academic potential. However, in order for a school to be able to nurture this process of ethical and moral awareness, not only do we need governors and teachers who are conscious and dedicated to this process, but we need parents as partners, because so much of this aspect of human development is learnt within the family by a process of role example. Theodor enjoys a strong rapport with the vast majority of our parents, who understand our model of discipline. However, in recent years I have become aware of a disturbing trend in which parents have become increasingly litigious, siding with their child in circumstances of perceived injustice. When parents are uncertain of the advisability of a particular course of action, think of the question posed by Carlos Castaneda’s Don Juan, namely, “Does this path have a heart? If the answer is no, you will know it, and then you must choose another path”. When parents are over involved in the relationship between teachers and learners, in most cases all parties suffer. What one is undermining in this process is the ability for children to learn to take personal responsibility for behaving in an ethical manner and how to resolve problems by relying on their own initiative. This is an important life skill and there is enough support within Theodor in most cases for adequate resolution. Parental involvement often needs to be more tempered, mostly for the sake of their child. Unfortunately, parental authority has weakened appreciably over the last few decades and parents are now required to maintain a constant process of renegotiation with children, even the very young. Parents are far less likely to set firm guidelines or to sanction misbehaviour, far more likely to negotiate with children about all sorts of decisions, and to routinely allow, dare I say even encourage, them to make decisions that earlier parents would have found unthinkable. Saying “no” to children today is usually only the beginning of further negotiation. As parents, we must never forget that the most important educational resources at Theodor Herzl are not the buildings, libraries, smart boards, tablets or computers. Everything centres on good teachers, providing a sound pedagogical foundation. The best schools attract the best teachers. These teachers are usually products of good education, who wish to share the gift of education. They are by nature generous human beings, who are passionate about their profession, and want to teach your child the right way; to choose the path that has a heart. We at Theodor owe our heads, teachers and support staff an unreserved debt of gratitude. Please ladies and gentlemen give them a hearty round of applause. In conclusion, 2013 has been kind to Theodor Herzl and we have enjoyed another remarkably successful year, embracing the challenges that we face continuously. I would like to thank all those people who give generously of themselves to Theodor Herzl and make my role as Chairman both easy and fulfilling. Thank you also to my wife, Hilary Meyer, for her continued support. Ian Meyer Chairman, THS Board of Governers

PREMIER AWARDS
SERVICE TO SCHOOL TROPHY The winner of this trophy has rendered outstanding service to Theodor Herzl over his whole high school career. He has unlocked the school for the pupils every day, looked after their lost property and established a secondhand book exchange. Apart from being a keen hiker with the Outdoor Activity club, he was a loyal and active member of the Debating team, Dance Committee and Service Club where he organised movement of desks and chairs on numerous occasions often without being asked. His willingness to be of assistance to all, regardless of how much extra time or effort it would take has earned him the thanks and respect of the entire school body. This year the reward goes to Jed Stephens

THE RITESH D HARIBHAI MEMORIAL SHIELD This shield celebrates “carpe diem” and is presented to the Matric learner who best demonstrates an ability to seize the moment. Congratulations to Gino Swanepoel IRWIN HANSRAJH TROPHY FOR GOOD FELLOWSHIP IN SPORT This recipient has shown excellent team spirit and commitment to his sport. Congratulations

HEADMASTER’S TROPHY FOR SPORTSMANSHIP AND SCHOLARSHIP I had the privilege of matriculating from the Wynberg Boys’ High School in 1975. The motto of Wynberg is Supera Moras and this is the Latin for ‘Overcome all difficulties’. Tonight, I have pleasure in awarding my trophy to a young gentleman who I remember vividly lying in his hospital bed, fighting against a dread disease, all those years ago. Throughout his high school career, this brave young man despite his illness has come back and has made a significant contribution to Theodor Herzl High School. He exudes confidence that is blended with humility and a quiet strength. Always polite and always happy to greet one with a ready smile and an accompanying sense of humour, he has indeed, overcome all difficulties. Before I award the Headmaster’s Trophy, I would like to mention that when I visited the recipient in his darkened hospital room one evening, I noticed a figure curled up at the bottom of his bed. It was his mother. She is testimony to her family’s courage and steadfastness in the most dire of circumstances. Tonight then I pay tribute to my hero, David Bolton and I would ask that David and his mother, Hilary, receive this trophy together. David, I salute you and thank you for allowing us to be a part of your life. May you be blessed with the best of health for many years to come and may your future be a great success. THE ESHKOLOT AWARD This is one of our premier awards. The Hebrew word, ESHKOLOT, literally means “a bunch of grapes” and so, in awarding this, we look for an all rounder – someone who participates significantly and achieves in all facets of our school – academics, sport, culture and service. The recipient of the Eshkolot award this year has shown academic excellence, commitment to the community in her involvement with the EP Children’s home and her dedication to Interact and has been an active member of the Debating team throughout her school career. This award goes to Erica Lahoud THEODOR HERZL HONOURS SHIELD The recipient of this award is a student who best exemplifies the values to which Theodor Herzl School aspires, namely caring, tolerance, integrity, academic excellence and exemplary moral standards David Bolton

Extract from Mr Fay’s speech to the Grade 12 CLASS OF 2013
Matrics
It has been our privilege to be a part of your lives. I know I speak for every member of staff when I say that you will all be sorely missed, such have been your achievements and contributions to our school. I worry about your future as, no doubt, your parents do. Political leaders who are prone to making empty promises about giving land without payment and providing permanent jobs when no jobs exist, only make governing our country more challenging and create an atmosphere of distrust, confusion and fear. We hope that as you venture into the exciting world out there, that certainty will replace trepidation and security will replace insecurity. The words of US statesman Robert F Kennedy ring as true today as they did decades ago: “Our answer is the world's hope; it is to rely on youth. The cruelties and obstacles of this swiftly changing planet will not yield to obsolete dogmas and outworn slogans. It cannot be moved by those who cling to a present which is already dying, who prefer the illusion of security to the excitement and danger which comes with even the most peaceful progress. “This world demands the qualities of youth; not a time of life but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. It is a revolutionary world we live in, and thus it is young people who must take the lead.” We wish you well Grade 12’s and look forward to sharing in the significant contributions you will make in time to come.
