800 Anniversary

To celebrate Mother Ann Marie’s feast day with a Dominican Jubilee flavor, fresco-like images and texts were added to the upper wall space at the entry and exit areas just outside the motherhouse chapel.

During late July and early August, most of the sisters were able to come home to the motherhouse for the yearly Community Days, a time for on-going formation in our Dominican life and the Apostolate,

and for simply enjoying one another’s company.

The Dominican Spirit: 800 years in the footsteps of St. Dominic A man of prayer, of the Church, and of zeal for souls this spirit of the Founder is captured in one of the familiar themes of the Order: Laudare, Benedicere, Praedicare - to Praise, to Bless, to Preach. These three aspects of the Order’s life intertwine and flow, one into the other and back again. Laudare. Dominic spent his nights in prayer, earnestly begging God for the salvation of others. Benedicere. Dominic was a priest, a man of the Church, who wept as he celebrated mass and devotedly prayed the Divine Office. Praedicare. Dominic spent his days preaching the Word of God, a joyful friar on the roads of Europe. Responding to the need of the Church, he prized the prayerful study of Sacred Truth and sent his followers to bring to others the treasures they had heard in the silence of the cloister and in the silence of their hearts. In the course of these eight centuries, Dominic’s sons and daughters have sought to follow his way of life, faithful to common and personal prayer, to the Church, and to the mission of preaching. Today, Dominicans are striving to respond to the Church's urgent call for the New Evangelization with the zeal of St. Dominic. We pray to the saints of the Order, especially to our father, St. Dominic, to assist us in this Jubilee Year of the Order and Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Reception of the Habit of Saint Dominic . . . 1216 - 2016 800 years ago, Dominic chose for his Order of Preachers a habit of undyed white wool, to signify poverty and purity, and a black mantle to signify penance. Through a vision to Bl. Reginald, Our Lady gave the Order a white scapular as a sign of her protection. The veil signifies our total consecration to Christ, the Bridegroom. With joy we wear the habit given us by our Founder 800 years ago.
