LETTERS PRESIDENT’S NOTE Gab Hart | ghart@hillendalecc.com
I very much would like to give a huge thank you to Jeff and Ruth Duerbeck. After decades of membership, Jeff and Ruth have ended their time at Hillendale. They moved to Delaware a few years ago (where I am sure Jeff is still raising hell). Through his years at the club Jeff has been instrumental in keeping Hillendale on the right path.
We are in the process of reimagining the monthly newsletter as we look to inform & engage our members through communication. Our GM, John Warnack, is working diligently to enhance all communication channels, starting with a newly revamped newsletter in September and some much needed website enhancements, which will take place over the next few months.Your continued patience throughout this process allows us the necessary strategic runway to truly elevate this experience for all. I do hope that everyone is enjoying their summer at Hillendale. We have made progress in hiring, establishing new procedures and policies, and in continuing to address Hillendale’s maintenance needs. Hopefully you are seeing changes that inspires you to recommend our club to your friends and neighbors!
His love, dedication, generosity, and commitment to Hillendale stand out as legendary. He will be sorely missed and he and his family are always welcome to visit us when they are in town. For those that know Jeff, they will be excited to see a car pull in with the plates that say “one more” because they will know that the Hillendale spirit will be alive and kicking that day! I would also like to thank this board for all of their tireless efforts in working on the growth of our club. Jim Wilhelm, Joe Durham, Shamir Somji, Geri Smyth, Mark Ravilico, Mike Flanagan, Jeff Wilhour, Mike Ford, Brad Pollard, Ron Coleman, and Steve Breitzka have gone above and beyond to make sure that you can be proud of our club. The time that they put into their roles is extensive and I am incredibly privileged to work with such a wonderful group of people. I am looking forward to sending you updates as to our progress in my next letter to the membership. Cheers to a fantastic season! Gabrielle Hart

GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE John L. Warnack, CCM, ECM, CFBE | jwarnack@hillendalecc.com
What is the Real Social Glue at Clubs? The bar and dining experience. These two areas bring members together before and after our extensive selection of HCC programs. Our goal for HCC is to be one of our members’ favorite places to dine; not the gourmet, best restaurant in the city, but just one of the 4 or 5 places our members always frequent. This is what we call achieving favorite place status. You have to know achieving this is a combination of factors: We are frequently asked “ What makes Hillendale Country Club such a nice place to belong to? “ Why do you have so many long-term members?” In reality, the question should be “ What is the value of an HCC membership?” Current Board of Governors President, Gabrielle Hart, said it best at our Club’s July Annual Meeting: Our Club is not about the clubhouse we recognize today, although it is nice and improving monthly; not about the benefits of membership, although they are extensive; it is about being a part of a tradition of continued association with men and women who share the common bond of grace, hospitality, family and good sportsmanship, who still want to socialize and serve with each other, who share common values and expectations, and want to BELONG, not just to patronize, but BELONG, to an institution with a purpose and legacy they can be proud of.”
1. Of course, food quality, menu variety and consistency. 2. Great, friendly service. 3. Attractive interior décor. 4. Many friends/members being there. 5. Good value for cost. 6. A place where everyone knows your name (Cheers). This month, we will continue enhancing our All Day Menu, adding newly expanded Pool and Kid’s menus. Thank you for BELONGING to Hillendale and making such a special place! Enjoy the rest of your Summer, John Warnack

U P D AT E S FROM THE POOL With the pool season ending in a few weeks, we’d like to share our top 6 reminders. For a list of all pool rules please visit our website.
Our Tennis Hard Court Project has been a huge success so far! Our renovation of Courts 3 & 4 will begin in September, thanks to the success of the Angel Fund and Silent Auction.
1. Any swimmer under the age of 6, even with approved flotation vests, must be accompa nied by an adult in the water, over 4ft.
The Tennis Committee is looking forward to planning tennis events all year round starting this Fall. Our community is only getting bigger and stronger and we are so grateful!
2. To reduce the spread of bacterial contamination, children not fully potty trained must wear a swim diaper in order to swim in our pools. A swim diaper AND plastic swim cover is strongly preferred. 3. 2 Swimmers at at time in the water slide tower. Please check the water below before entering the slide. 4. A trash receptacle has been placed at the Playground; please help us keep this area litter free! 5. Bye cicadas, hello yellow jackets! It’s that time of the season, where unwanted guests are buzzing around your tables… please keep lids on drinks when possible, and dispose of food containers promptly. 6. As the season comes to an end - don’t forget to check the Lost and Found for any of your items. Any remaining items after Labor Day will be donated.

A LETTER FROM THE DEPARTMENT After a great start to spring we have hit the ground running for the summer. With the hot and steamy summer weather comes the occasional thunderstorm. The course continues to be busy, and we are excited to have many new members enjoying the Club. After a tough year last year, we are seeing some more travel again amongst the members, and I hope some of you have been able to enjoy some vacation time once again! July was a great month for events and junior camps. We have new champions in our Men’s Twilight it was Keith Parker and Brian Smyth and in our Women’s Twilight it was Gail Blauvelt and Nancy Egan. To end the month with events in July we had one of our ladies win the 18 Hole Bill Clarke and the 18 Hole Season Long Match Play. Great playing PENNY GOODE!!! She has been working so hard to improve her game and this week it came through. Our Junior Camps have been setting records at Hillendale with over 60 kids in 2 weeks. They have been gutting it out in the heat and were having a blast. SUNSET ON THE COURSE

We have a big week for our junior with Boot Camp on August 3rd – 6th, August 24th – 27th, and Lil Hillendalers August 17th -20th. We finish up with the juniors with our Traditional Junior Bill Clarke Club Championships on August 21st-22nd. Lots going on in August and we look forward to everyone participating. Last, I want to Brandon and Abby and the rest of our team for coving me when I was on leave. They did a great job, and I can’t thank them enough. We had to say goodbye to Abby as she is getting ready for college, but she will be back next year. She has been a big asset to the club, and I am glad she is coming back. Thank you to everyone for the support I have been given. R.G. Hackett Head Golf Professional

HIGHLIGHTS LOOKING BACK ON JULY... H U R R I CA N E P O ST- STO R M REPORT The Hillendale Hurricanes made landfall this season, with a storming 50 swimmers, after a disappointing canceled season in 2020. The possibility of a virtual season didn’t scare away these Hurricanes, ranging in ages 5 - 13, and luckily we were able to compete in-person after all!
FUN FACT! We have had 91 swimmers pass the swim test this season! Can we get to 100 by the end of the season!? Congratulations to all of the swimmers who passed the swim test, and a special shoutout to these brave 5 year olds who passed – Houston Anderson, Henry Wilhour, McKinley Naylor and Gabby Trinfo!
We competed against the brut forces of BCC, L’Hirondelle and Roland Park and unfortunately fell short in victories, but we saw surges of improved strokes, confidence and enthusiasm. We are looking forward to storm chasing in 2022! A massive thanks goes out to our coaches, McKayla Charney, Weber Duval and Melody Kelly for fearlessly facing the eye of the storm, and all of their efforts in organizing an all around great Hurricane season! TROPICAL STORMS McKayla Charney & Weber Duval provided swim lessons to our littlest swimmers this year — lessons end on August 13th. We hope to see these little Tropical Storms upgrade to Hurricanes someday!
