LETTERS PRESIDENT’S NOTE Gab Hart | ghart@hillendalecc.com
Dear Members, It has been great summer season at Hillendale. I am excited to welcome Alica Mangan, our new dining room manager, and Terry Lombardi-Nalls, our new Director of Events. We hope that you will see and feel positive changes in your daily experiences at the club as we continue to hire and develop new staff. In spite of some extreme weather this season, our golf course stayed in great shape thanks to Superintendent Gar McLamb and his crew. Rains starting in early August have created conditions that have required us to close the course at times or to restrict usage to rough only or walking only. We appreciate your patience and understanding when these decisions have to be made. As always it is most important to protect our precious asset. Thank you to our Greens committee for assisting Gar with project goals, course advisements, and improvement suggestions. Their mission is to make sure you have the best golfing experience that Hillendale can provide.

I have been receiving great feedback from many of you about our pool and tennis departments. I know that my own experience this season has been superior to past years. DRD has provided a much needed consistent service level at the pool. Our Pool Committee has done a great job at listening to your suggestions for upgrading amenities and I thank them for their thoughtfulness in approaching this season knowing that the pool complex is the social heart of our summer season. Tennis has had a wonderful rebirth under the leadership of Michael Vann. His team way exceeded my expectations in many areas. Court conditions have never been better. Michael’s attention to grooming surfaces, to making sure players have access to amenities, and to organizing level based clinics and events, have been a shot of B12 for our tennis program. I know it is a small thing but coolers were always clean and well stocked with cold water and ice. These little things mean a lot to our daily experiences. I thank him and the Tennis Committee for the hard work that goes into our tennis complex. And of course I would be remiss if I didn’t express how excited I am that we will begin work on our new hard court installation on courts 3 & 4 right after Labor Day. Woohoo! I look forward to challenging some of our golfer members to a Pickle Ball match! As we wind down our summer season the work doesn’t stop. The Staff of Hillendale and your Board of Governors will continue to focus on the health and the growth of our club. We will continue to be fiscally responsible and to explore areas that we can make the greatest impact on your club experience. I encourage you to join a committee to help us in forging our path to greatness. As ever, thank you for your continued support and cheers to a successful upcoming Fall season! Gabrielle Hart President of the Board of Governors

U P D AT E S FROM THE COURT What an amazing 2021 tennis season! The Hillendale courts were packed daily with high energy, camaraderie and positivity. With the help of our dedicated tennis staff lead by tennis professional, Mike Vann, we had much success with our junior camps, adult clinics, USTA matches, round robins, and everyday play. And the maintenance of our har tru courts has never been better. We have said it once and we will say it again - Hillendale Tennis is booming! We have raised $124,000 for our Tennis Angel Fund and our hard court project is set to begin mid September. The renovation should take approximately 4-8 weeks, weather permitting. With the construction completed this Fall, this will allow us to leave nets up on those two hard courts past the end of the regular tennis season. Get ready for tennis and pickle ball all winter long! A few fun events coming up…9/4 is our event of the season, Team Tennis! And on 9/18 at 6pm we have our Alma Mater-themed mixed doubles round robin. Followed by our Ravens-themed Round Robin on 10/1. All levels are welcome to each event and we strongly encourage newer players to get out there and have some fun!
FROM THE COURSE The year is going by fast, and the Outing season is about to begin. This last month was a month of champions as our Women’s Season Long, Presidents Cup, Stroke Play, and Men’s Club Championship have all been crowned a new champion. Keep up with us on social media to hear more about our winners this season! Our junior program came to an end but was one of the most successful seasons in the past couple of years. We have tons of bright potential out there and it’s such a great sight to see. This upcoming month we will be hosting our Women’s Club Championship and our Men’s Invitational. We are always trying to get better, and there are always opportunities to do so. As a club and Golf Operation we will be utilizing our Text Messaging abilities to communicate to our membership. This is something that we have done in the past but want to consistently do to help our communication with all of our members. We do have many new members and for this to work we must update all members in our database. If you haven’t received a text message from 844-974-3123, please send R.G. your cell phone number and he will enter it in the system. I look forward to September and October as we have some fun events coming your way. If you ever need anything, please let me know and I’ll be happy to help! Thank you, R.G. Hillendale Country Club, the Old Club as some refer to it, was started in 1923 at the intersection of Hillen Road and Taylor Avenue. It began as a private enterprise by the Preston Realty Company built from the Old Hillen Estate, the home of the early Mayors of Baltimore. During and after the Second World War, Hillendale experienced financial struggle.
In the early 1950’s, many of our members got together and with, as they refer to it, the “Hillendale Spirit” and “Never Say Die” attitudes, and began working to rebuild the club. There were only 145 golf members who, with voluntary contributions and an aggressive new membership program, brought the club back to solid health. Then in 1952, Hillendale was informed that the club lease would be canceled in 1954. Many sites were considered and studied, but under the

direction of President Gilbert Nolte, the Lindsey farm (an old sheep farm) was purchased. The club then moved to the Blenheim Road location. Stay tuned for more history on Hillendale, as we will continue to feature facts about the club in upcoming newsletters!

Welcome Terry!
We’re all so happy to have you here at Hillendale!
Thank you to everyone for your warm welcome my first few days at Hillendale Country Club. It has been a pleasure to meet some of you and also wonderful to see some of the friendly faces that I have had the pleasure of helping during my time at the Manor Tavern. I have always loved the event world and helping guests celebrate life! After 24 years with the Manor Tavern as the Banquet and Catering Sales Manager I went on to work with the Cool Kids Campaign. This organization has always been dear to my heart, so I was
excited to devote my time helping the Cool Kids Campaign create community outreach opportunities and plan fundraising events. I will continue to support Cool Kids as a volunteer but now I start a new chapter as the Director of Events here at HCC. I hope my passion and experience will be an asset to Hillendale and I hope to help create memories that will last forever for all of you and your guests. I look forward to meeting eveyone and I welcome the opportunity to help you plan a special event at Hillendale!
