Marymount will offer a number of internships in several different fields, ranging from Neuroscience to the Law and Finance to Architecture, in sites throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Internship opportunities are available to students who want to focus on a particular area of interest during the summer with hands-on learning, and access to professionals are at the center of this experience.

UCLA Medical School: Department of Neurology

Mentor: Dr. Rhonda Voskuhl (mother of Carmen Voskuhl ‘17) Overview: Dr. Voskuhl is an internationally recognized expert in translation of basic research to clinical trials for Multiple Sclerosis. Dr. Voskuhl is a Professor in the UCLA Department of Neurology, Director of the MS Program at UCLA and the Jack Skirball Chair in MS research.

Responsibilities: Conducting basic research in Dr. Voskuhl’s lab including neuropathology, neuroimmunology and genetic manipulations. Participants will experiment with new drugs as treatments in MS models, and will have exposure to novel MS clinical trials based on basic research in the Voskuhl lab. Students will also participate in the MS patient care clinic.

UCLA Medical School: Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care

Mentor: Dr. Chris Cooper (father of Clare Cooper ‘17) Overview: Dr. Cooper is Professor of Medicine and Physiology in the UCLA Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA and Director of the UCLA Exercise Physiology Research Laboratory. Responsibilities: Working in a medical research laboratory where studies are being conducted (using human subjects) in order to determine the most effective ways to treat pulmonary disease and to address lung function in different environments. Students will work directly with other interns, undergraduate and graduate medical students as well as Fellows involved with work in Dr. Cooper’s lab. Time Frame: Dates are TBD and to be agreed upon with Dr. Cooper but are likely to be from mid-June to mid-July. Work will likely be four to five days a week, for approximately 25-30 hours per week.

UCLA Science Laboratories: Cancer and Stem Cell Research

Mentor: James Economou, M.D., Ph.D.

Overview: Dr. Economou is Vice Chancellor for Research at UCLA and sponsors summer internships for high school and college students in UCLA science laboratories.

Responsibilities: Interns will likely work with graduate medical and fellows in various areas.

Requirements: Participants must have completed multiple science courses including AP Biology and Honors Chemistry and also have an interest in medicine and research. Other prerequisites can include prior internships. Time Frame: 6 weeks during the summer, dates to be mutually agreed upon with Dr. Economou and his associates. # of Positions: 3

UCLA Medical School: Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Heart Transplant Program

Mentor: Dr. Mario Deng

Overview: Dr. Deng is Professor of Medicine and Medical Director at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, an internationally recognized physician and researcher, currently the Medical Director of UCLA’s Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Heart Transplant Program. An example of specialization includes a study on reducing the risk of multiorgan dysfunction and rejection that stems from cardiac allograft rejection. Responsibilities: Working in Dr. Deng’s lab with many of his colleagues, including UCLA undergraduates. Requirements: Participants must have a proven track record in science and math courses along with a great deal of self-starting skills. Time Frame: Internship is approximately 4-5 weeks with the possibility of extending into the school year. # of Positions: 2 Eligibility: Rising juniors and seniors

UCLA Medical School Department of Neurosurgery & Pediatric Neurology UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Program Mentors: UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Team – Dr. Christopher Giza, Dr. Meeyro Choe, Sue Yudovin, Max Zeiger and Constance Johnson Overview: The intern(s) will have the opportunity to learn from a multidisciplinary team that consists of research scientists, clinicians, a nurse practitioner and researchers in the BrainSPORT program. Dr. Christopher Giza leads the Pediatric TBI/Sports Concussion program at UCLA. He served as ViceChair for the California State Athletic Commission, traveled to Afghanistan in 2011 as a civilian advisor to the Department of Defense and Co-Chaired the American Academy of Neurology’s committee, which developed an evidencebased Practice Guideline for Management of Sports Concussions in 2013. Dr. Giza serves on the Center for Disease Control’s Pediatric mild TBI committee, the NCAA Concussion Task Force and the Major League Soccer Concussion Program Committee. He is currently a Professor of Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine and Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA. Responsibilities: Assist in preseason baseline concussion data collection for UCLA athletics and partnering high schools. Students will have the opportunity to shadow weekly clinic and learn to administer various tools used in clinical concussion data collection. Students will work directly with other interns, undergraduate and graduate medical students who work in the UCLA BrainSPORT program and have the opportunity to design and present original research. Time Frame: Dates are TBD and to be agreed upon with the intern BrainSPORT team but interns should expect to be available from early-June to late-August. UCLA Orthopaedic Center: Sports Medicine

Mentors: Dr. David McAllister (father of Lindsey McAllister, ‘17), and Dan Boguszewski Overview: Dr. McAllister is the Director of the UCLA Sports Medicine Program. Dan Boguszewski is the Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The primary focus of this lab is on athletic knee injuries. Responsibilities: Assist with all aspects of biomechanical testing using a robotic test apparatus, including cadaveric specimen preparation, testing, and data analysis. The research focuses on injury prevention and repair by examining joint stability, kinematic function, and ligament forces. The results of these studies will help to better understand sports injury mechanisms, guide surgical treatment and assist with the development of improved rehabilitation protocols following injury.

The Pink Lotus Foundation

Mentor: Andy Funk

Overview: The Pink Lotus Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping low income, uninsured and underinsured women receive 100% free breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment services. Responsibilities: Assisting in various capacities for the foundation. Time Frame: TBD # of Positions: 1 Eligibility: Rising juniors and seniors

The Bay Foundation (TBF) and the Center for Urban Resilience (CURes) Overview: The Bay Foundation (TBF) and the Center for Urban Resilience (CURes) have joined together to create an expansive internship program based at the Loyola Marymount University campus. This program allows for students and young adults to engage in environmental education and research projects that benefit local watersheds and the Santa Monica Bay. In doing so, participants have the opportunity to become stewards of the local environment by actively learning from local experts. Responsibilities: Interns, working alongside LMU undergrads and others, will have opportunities to sign up for projects that help clean up the waterways, increase green space and natural habitat, advocate for wildlife, and environmental policy, among other things. Individuals interested in more specialized projects might be interested in the LMU campus sustainability tours or the Ballona Wetlands education docent program. Participants will be exposed to a full suite of environmental projects, making the LMU base a local hub for informal education on becoming a natural scientist. Requirements: Must be at least 16 years old. Participants are expected to record their experiences and research observations in a notebook. Timeframe: Interns must commit to a minimum of 40 hours. Dates are dependent on the projects that interns are interested in, and the hours will be documented and verified by a supervisor. Eligibility: Rising juniors and seniors

Alexa Cafe

iD Tech Camps at UCLA

COSMOS

Overview: At Alexa Café, held on the Marymount campus, girls ages 10-15 discover a passion for technology in a unique environment that celebrates creativity, philanthropy, and entrepreneurship. Weeklong, collaborative courses are taught in small groups of just 8 girls per instructor— guaranteed—for the most personalized instruction. Girls learn engineering principles, code games, design websites, model 3D characters, snap photos, create films, print 3D objects, and much more.

Overview: At iD Tech Camps, students ages 7-17 can learn to code, design video games, mod Minecraft, engineer robots, model 3D characters, build websites, print 3D models, and more! iD Tech summer courses are inclusive of every skill level and learning style. Tech-savvy instructors teach curriculum in small groups of just 8 students per instructor—guaranteed—so both beginners and advanced students can learn at the perfect pace. Campers make new friends, learn foundational STEM skills, and enjoy long-term benefits that extend beyond school, college, and future careers.

Overview: COSMOS is a four-week residential program at one of four UC campuses for talented and motivated students completing grades 8-12. Students work side by side with outstanding researchers and faculty exploring advanced topics beyond the typical high school curriculum in STEM fields. COSMOS courses are hands-on and lab intensive focusing on current research at the University of California.

There is one need-based scholarship available, and the selected student may select either Alexa Cafe or iD Tech Camp.

COSMOS is a fee based program. Marymount has limited need-based financial aid available. Acceptance into COSMOS does not guarantee financial aid for the program. USC Viterbi School of Engineering, SHINE Summer Program

UCLA Engineering Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science Tech Camp

UCLA High School Summer Research Program (HSSRP)

Mentor: Dr. Maja Mataric

Overview: This 4 week summer day-camp exposes rising sophomores and juniors to the creative nature of engineering through project-based activities and team challenges. Campers will experience working in HSSEAS’ state of the art Creativity Center along-side hand selected UCLA engineering student mentors under the direction of UCLA faculty and program staff.

Overview: An 8 week summer program that encourages all of its high school participants to consider a future in engineering. Students are offered research opportunities in all areas of engineering and are partnered with a UCLA Engineering Professor and a graduate team (daily lab supervisors). Students conduct their research on the UCLA campus in UCLA Engineering Labs and Facilities. Individual research or a group project will be assigned to the students for the eight-week program.

Overview: SHINE (Summer High School Intensive in Next-Generation Engineering) is a sevenweek opportunity to participate in hands-on engineering laboratory research focused on real-world problems. SHINE is designed for a small cohort of high achieving students already interested in research. Close mentorship comes from USC Viterbi faculty and staff, graduate student researchers, plus visiting national scholars.

CO Architects

Holland and Sherry

Overview: Mr. Kelsey is the managing principal at CO Architects specializing in medical/academic institutional architecture. The firm is located in the mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles in a historic structure.

Overview: Holland & Sherry is a source for Interior Designers around the world and provides the worlds’ finest in Cloths. The company started as a men’s custom clothing company over 200 years ago. The Interiors side, only 18 years old, has grown into an internationally acclaimed company servicing designers with luxury products. Holland and Sherry has develop collections that range from furnishings, wall coverings, leather, hardware, trims, custom rugs and embroidery, all representing our standard of quality and craftsmanship.

Mentor: Scott Kelsey (father of Madeleine Kelsey ‘16) and Sheri Meshkinpour

Responsibilities: Work directly with Mr. Kelsey, Ms. Meshkinpour and many of their colleagues to develop a better handson understanding of what architects do and how the business of architecture works. Participants will draw/ sketch, model build, use architectural software and examine construction sites along with an introduction to the marketing aspect of how an architecture firm works. Responsibilities: Learning the basics about Interior products, helping in the sample room, assisting Outside Sales reps on meetings and assisting the showroom manager where it is needed. Requirements: Internship is at the Pacific Design Center, and students would need to provide their own transportation. Drivers License is preferred but not required. Time Frame: Hours and days would be agreed upon with the student and Holland and Sherry representative. # of Positions: 2

LMU Youth Theology Institute – Department of Theological Studies Overview: The LMU Youth Theology Institute is an innovative five-day summer institute at LMU – run by LMU professors, graduate, and undergraduate students. High School students are given the opportunity to creatively and intensively explore their own future leadership potential and the “big spiritual questions” they have in dialogue with various religious traditions (including but not exclusively Roman Catholicism). The institute is a holistic and integrative experience which seeks to capture young imaginations, cultivate the students’ spiritual growth, facilitate intellectual development, and promote leadership that is ethical, multicultural, and seems justice in a broken world. Students will express what they have experienced and learned through a short film created in groups presented at a Friday showcase. Students will stay in LMU housing for the week.

Jeffrey Foundation Mentors: Alyce Morris Overview: The Jeffrey Foundation is a non-profit organization that strives to improve the quality of life for special needs children and their families through the development of community-based therapeutic, recreational, educational, and social programs.

Responsibilities: Assisting with special needs children including educational, creative, and recreational activities that foster the children’s academic, social, and behavioral development to prepare them for every stage of life.

Los Angeles Superior Court, Torrance

Mentor: Judge Eric Taylor (father of Haley Taylor ‘15) Overview: The purpose of this position is to provide an opportunity to gain experience working in an office environment and to learn about judicial court functions by performing a variety of administrative support tasks related to the program area. The work typically is performed under the close supervision of a regular permanent Court employee. Responsibilities: Under direct supervision, volunteers perform basic clerical and office support duties while learning court policies and practices. They provide assistance to the Court in carrying out these duties while receiving practical work experience and skill development opportunities, and learning court procedures, operations functions and various activities.

LitiNomics Mentor: Christian Tregillis (father of Natalia Urena-Tregillis ‘18) Overview: LitiNomics provides consulting and expert testimony on economics, finance, and accounting - primarily in the context of legal disputes. This work often involves investigations into the amount of harm caused by alleged illegal acts such as patent infringement, breaches of contracts, and fraud. As a result, LitiNomics and its team members analyze product markets, the value of businesses, company records, and other information to support expert testimony in court. Responsibilities: Research companies and industries, read and summarize case opinions from courts, assist in building PowerPoint presentations and some Excel spreadsheets.

Requirements: Must be at least 16 years old.

Imperial Capital Mentor: John Mack (Eden Mack ’17, Chris Shepard (Kya Shepard ’19), Jonathan Lee, Senior Vice President and Analyst Class Overview: Imperial Capital is a full-service investment banking firm with offices in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago and Minneapolis. The firm currently employs over 250 professionals and offers a wide range of proprietary products and services to institutional investors, middle market companies, and private equity firms. Imperial Capital provides institutional clients research and sales and trading of high yield and distressed debt securities, bank debt, convertible bonds, preferred stocks, and equities. The firm provides middle market companies and financial sponsors with capital markets, merger and acquisitions, capital structure, restructuring and recapitalization advisory services.

Responsibilities: The main objective of the Investment Banking Summer Internship Program for Imperial Capital is to support and help achieve the goals and objectives of Investment Banking Group by: · Conducting research and prepare analyses of companies, industries, capital markets, historical financial statements and prospective financial information; · Learning to create and author financial models, valuation analysis, debt capacity and capital adequacy analyses, and documents and presentations for proposals and transactions; ·

America’s Funniest Home Videos Mentor: Vin DiBona (Marymount Board of Trustees, father of Cara Swartz ‘90)

Overview: As described on the Vin Di Bona Productions website, “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (known as AFV), is the longest-running primetime entertainment series in the history of ABC. After twenty-five seasons and millions of video submissions, AFV is distributed in over 103 countries around the world, and appears as fifteen local versions around the globe.

Overview: Jimmy Dunne is the President and Founder of Inspire, a leading music distribution and marketing firm partnering artists with brands. Inspire has created many of the most successful music/branding campaigns in the past decade including successes with Whole Foods Market, JCPenney, Visa, Office Depot, UPS, Caruso Affiliated, InterCall and artists/labels spanning the globe.

Responsibilities: Working to promote the show in social media, digital media, and content creation, among other things. Requirements: Interest and knowledge in comedy, writing, editing, video editing, and social media. Must be a self-starter and eager to participate in a team environment. Clairobscur Dance Company Mentor: Laurie Sefton (mother of Reiley Johnson ‘15) Overview: Laurie Sefton is the Founder, Artistic Director and resident choreographer of Clairobscur Dance Company. Responsibilities: Intern will work side-by-side with the company Director and the Director of Development. Internship duties and activities might involve, but are not limited to one or more of the following areas: -Volunteer Management/Staff Management: Recruiting, training, placing, managing, and recognizing volunteers. -Fundraising: Work with Director of Development on special events, foundation/corporate grants and the personal solicitations of major donors. -Public Relations/Marketing: Communication and development of a far reaching social media campaign including multiple platforms, and working directly with the Artistic Director in the development of Facebook campaign and social media strategy. -Public Education and Outreach: Educating members of the public about the company’s mission, concert dance and the vibrant dance scene in Los Angeles. Requirements: Candidate must be a self-starter, pay attention to detail, and have knowledge of various social media outlets such as Facebook, Instagram, etc. Knowledge of In-design and Photoshop are a plus. Morgan-Wixson Theatre Mentor: Anne Gesling Overview: The Morgan-Wixson Theatre is a not-for-profit volunteer community theatre that provides a balanced, varied and challenging season of published plays. The Gotham Group Mentor: Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, (mother of Caroline Vein ‘18) Overview: The Gotham Group is a boutique talent management and production company that will provide interns with an expansive overview of the entertainment business. As managers, Gotham not only represents top writers and directors in the feature and television fields, but is the largest aggregator of book and comic book titles in the entertainment industry. They sell books to every producer and studio, and to the clients of every management company and agency in town. In addition, Gotham has a unique specialization in animation, and dominates in representing talent in this arena. On the producing side, Gotham has a first look deal at Sony Feature Animation and with ABC Studios for live action television series.

Responsibilities: Assisting in backstage/booth crew of the summer musical. Requirements: TBD Time Frame: Most of the volunteer time would be on the weekends.

Responsibilities: Interns will learn the ropes by shadowing assistants on desks, reading books and writing coverage, attending client meetings, answering phones, and obtaining business knowledge through general office assistance. Requirements: Interest in books, animation, live action film and television. Must be a self-starter and eager to participate in a team environment.
