At this juncture in their development and in their lives, it is critical for girls to be encouraged by leaders, having experience in “real world” settings as they seek to discover their unique interests. THE PROGRAM
Marymount will offer a number of internships in several different fields, ranging from Neuroscience to the Law, and Finance to Architecture, in sites throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Internship opportunities are available to students who want to focus on a particular area of interest during the summer. Hands-on learning and access to professionals are at the center of this experience.
UCLA Medical School: Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care
Mentor: Dr. Chris Cooper (father of Clare Cooper ‘17) and Dr. Brett Dolezal Overview: Dr. Cooper is Professor of Medicine and Physiology in the UCLA Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA and Director of the UCLA Exercise Physiology Research Laboratory. Responsibilities: Working in a medical research laboratory where studies are being conducted (using human subjects) in order to determine the most effective ways to treat pulmonary disease and to address lung function in different environments. Students will work directly with other interns, undergraduate and graduate medical students as well as Fellows involved with work in Dr. Cooper’s lab. Time Frame: Dates are TBD and to be agreed upon with Dr. Cooper but are likely to be from mid-June to mid-July. UCLA Science Laboratories: Cancer and Stem Cell Research
Mentor: Dr. James Economou and Dr. Antoni Ribas
Overview: Dr. Economou and Dr. Ribas are UCLA professors and sponsor summer internships for high school and college students in UCLA science laboratories. Responsibilities: Interns will likely work with graduate medical students and fellows in various areas. Requirements: Participants must have completed multiple science courses including AP Biology and Honors Chemistry and also have an interest in medicine and research. Other prerequisites can include prior internships. Time Frame: 6 weeks during the summer, dates to be mutually agreed upon with Dr. Economou and his associates. # of Positions: 3 Eligibility: Rising juniors and seniors
Overview: The intern(s) will have the opportunity to learn from a multidisciplinary team that consists of research scientists, clinicians, a nurse practitioner and researchers in the BrainSPORT program. Dr. Christopher Giza leads the UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Concussion Program. He served as Vice-Chair for the California State Athletic Commission, traveled to Afghanistan in 2011 as a civilian advisor to the Department of Defense and Co-Chaired the American Academy of Neurology’s committee, which developed an evidence based Practice Guideline for Management of Sports Concussions in 2013. Dr. Giza serves as the UCLA’s principle investigator for the NCAA/DoD CARE Consortium research project, the largest national longitudinal concussion study of its kind. He is currently a Professor of Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine and Mattel Children’s Hospital, UCLA. The intern(s) will work directly with UCLA Varsity athletes while conducting preseason baseline tests and have the opportunity to attend weekly pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury lab meeting with the BrainSPORT team, gaining valuable insight of the daily operations of clinical research. Responsibilities: Assist in preseason baseline concussion data collection for UCLA athletics and partnering high schools. Students will have the opportunity to shadow neurology exams and learn to administer various tools used in clinical concussion data collection. Students will work directly with other interns, UCLA undergraduate and graduate medical students who work in the UCLA BrainSPORT program. A culminating project on a research topic of interest will be presented at the end of the internship. Time Frame: Dates are TBD and to be agreed upon with the intern BrainSPORT team, but interns should expect to be available from early-June to late-August. UCLA CASIT Robotic Surgery Mentor(s): Dr. Joe Hines, (father of Avery ‘20) Overview: The UCLA Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology provides training in robotic and imaging technology for physicians caring for patients with complex conditions. CASIT also has a large research component investigating novel medical devices. Responsibilities: Interns will work with CASIT faculty and staff assisting in training sessions and current research projects. Requirements: Interest and aptitude in science and biology. Overview: Dr. Deng is Professor of Medicine and Medical Director at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA, an internationally recognized physician and researcher, currently the Medical Director of UCLA’s Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Heart Transplant Program. An example of this specialization includes a study on reducing the risk of multiorgan dysfunction and rejection that stems from cardiac allograft rejection. Responsibilities: Working in Dr. Deng’s lab with many of his colleagues, including UCLA undergraduates. Requirements: Participants must have a proven track record in science and math courses along with a great deal of self-starting skills. Overview: Established in 1978, LA BioMed’s Summer Fellowship Program is designed to encourage graduating high school seniors and high school juniors to explore careers in the field of biomedical science. Students in the program will: • Spend eight weeks gaining laboratory or clinical research experience under the mentorship of LA BioMed Investigators • Interact with MDs, PhD investigators, Research Associates, and postdoctoral fellows • Participate in a weekly lecture series presented by world-renowned faculty • Attend additional institutional lectures, departmental conferences, and lab meetings • Present their summer research to peers, family, and research community during the final week of the program, and receive Certificates of Achievement https://labiomed.org/summer-fellowship Requirements: Students will be selected on the basis of merit. In order to be eligible for consideration, a student must have: • Current enrollment in a Los Angeles County or Orange County high school. • Current enrollment as a high school senior graduating in 2018, or a high school junior graduating in 2019. • Demonstrated outstanding general academic achievement with particular focus on science coursework. • Ability to participate full-time in all program activities during the eight-week period (June 18, 2018 through August 10, 2018, generally from 8 AM to 5 PM). Osborne Head and Neck Institute (OHNI) - Summer Scholars Mentors: Dr. Ryan Osborne and OHNI Physicians Overview: The OHNI Medical Scholars Program is sponsored by the Osborne Head & Neck Institute in Los Angeles, CA. This program provides students with the opportunity to enter a clinical setting with a physician mentor and observe patient encounters and the practice of medicine. (http://www.ohnifoundation.com/medicalscholars/) Minimum Requirements: • Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be available to attend the entire program. If you are unsure of your availability on a weekday afternoon, please call to inquire. • Students are expected to be prompt and provide their own transportation. • Previous medical volunteer experience is not a requirement. • All students need to be up to date with their vaccines, including a TDaP booster (Adacel) to ensure protection from whooping cough and a PPD test for tuberculosis. • All student participants will be required to sign a HIPAA Confidentiality Agreement, Social Media Agreement, and Dress Code Agreement. LA BioMed Summer Fellowship Program Mentors: LA BioMed Investigators
USC Viterbi School of Engineering, SHINE Summer Program Mentor: USC Engineering Faculty Overview: SHINE (Summer High School Intensive in NextGeneration Engineering) is a seven-week opportunity to participate in hands-on engineering laboratory research focused on real-world problems. SHINE is designed for a small cohort of high achieving students already interested in research. Close mentorship comes from USC Viterbi faculty and staff, graduate student researchers, plus visiting national scholars. Time Frame: June 18 - August 3 # of Positions: 5
Applications for SHINE are facilitated through Mr. Petrone, but submitted directly to the program by March 15. There is an information session for interested students at USC on Saturday, February 24. There are limited need-based scholarships available for this internship. CO Architects
Overview: The Summer Immersion Program is a free 7-week summer program for 10th–11th grade girls (rising juniors and seniors) to learn computer science, gain exposure to tech jobs, and join a supportive sisterhood of thousands of girls across the US. https://girlswhocode.com/ summer-immersion-programs/ Responsibilities: The Summer Immersion Program is an introductory Computer Science course, and no previous experience is required. All eligible applicants who have an interest in technology and a willingness to learn are welcome. Participants must commit to the full 7 week program. Time Frames: June 18 - August 3; June 25 - August 10 Eligibility: Rising juniors and seniors This application consists of one shortanswer question. Girls Who Code does not ask for your grades or any recommendations. Applications for the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program are facilitated through Mr. Petrone, but submitted directly to the program by February 16 (Round 1) or March 16 (Round 2). Responsibilities: The internship at CO Architects is a unique opportunity to work within an architecture office. The experience will include participating in design meetings, working with a team, performing various design tasks, going on site visits, and honing graphic skills. You will be asked to design and develop your own individual project with the help of the CO Architects team. The Coastal Research Institute: The Bay Foundation (TBF) and Loyola Marymount University (LMU) Overview: The Bay Foundation (TBF) and Loyola Marymount University’s Seaver College of Science and Engineering recently launched the Coastal Research Institute (CRI), that creates an expansive internship program based at the LMU campus. This program allows for students and young adults to engage in environmental education and research projects that benefit local watersheds and the Santa Monica Bay. In doing so, participants can become stewards of the local environment by actively learning from local experts and intern-mentors. Responsibilities: Interns, working alongside LMU undergraduates and others, will have opportunities to sign up for projects that help clean up the waterways, increase green space and natural habitat, provide benefits for wildlife, and environmental policy, among other things. Individuals interested in more specialized projects might be interested in working alongside TBF/LMU staff and CRI summer interns who will be conducting research and data collection at coastal habitat restoration projects such as the LAX Dunes and the Santa Monica Beach Pilot Project, as well as the Friends of the Ballona Wetlands education docent program. Participants will be exposed to a full suite of environmental projects, making the LMU base a local hub for informal education on becoming a natural scientist. Requirements: Must be at least 16 years old. Participants are expected to record their experiences and research observations in a notebook. Timeframe: Interns must commit to a minimum of 40 hours. Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program
Overview: Ms. Mehta, Senior Associate, and Ms. Tegelecian, Associate, will guide interns throughout a 4-week internship at CO Architects, an architecture and design firm that specializes in university, science & technology and hospital buildings. CO Architects, located in Mid-Wilshire, is a collaborative office environment with a staff of 95 accomplished architects, designers, and building specialists, who start with an idea for a building and develop it into reality. This internship will give you a glimpse into the architecture profession and you’ll see just what it takes to design and construct the buildings all around you.

The Jeffrey Foundation Mentors: Alyce Morris, Marvin Espinoza and Alma Saldivar Overview: The Jeffrey Foundation is a non-profit organization that strives to improve the quality of life for special needs children and their families through the development of community-based therapeutic, recreational, educational, and social programs. Responsibilities: Assisting with special needs children including educational, creative, and recreational activities that foster the children’s academic, social, and behavioral development to prepare them for every stage of life. Volunteers are given an orientation of one hour where assignments and functions of those assignments are explained, questions answered, and application form finalized. This is required of every volunteer. UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital Pediatric Palliative Care Program Mentor: Gina Kornfeind, MSW, MS (Social Worker & Support/Bereavement Coordinator) (mother of Lindsay Kornfeind ‘16 and Maggie Kornfeind ‘21)
Responsibilities: Interns will learn and observe how to provide support, programming and education, and help with event planning in a pediatric hospital setting. Students will be able to learn about each of the roles on our team, yet focus on both clinical support of families and staff, along with the critical program development piece. They will be able to assist with the development of programmatic materials, a Sibling Support Group curriculum and event planning, as well as attend several multidisciplinary committee meetings within the hospital. This placement will address mature themes on a regular basis - serious illness and sometimes death - in an emotionally sensitive environment. An ability to handle these experiences with poise and professionalism is necessary. Time Frame: Dates are TBD but will likely fall between June 25- August 10. LMU Youth Theology Institute – Department of Theological Studies Overview: The LMU Youth Theology Institute is an innovative five-day summer institute at LMU – run by LMU professors, graduate, and undergraduate students. High School students are given the opportunity to creatively and intensively explore their own future leadership potential and the “big spiritual questions” they have in dialogue with various religious traditions (including but not exclusively Roman Catholicism). A compelling aspect of the institute is visiting Southern California organizations that promote justice as well as local faith communities from different cultural traditions. The institute is a holistic and integrative experience which seeks to capture young imaginations, cultivate the students’ spiritual growth, facilitate intellectual development, and promote leadership that is ethical, multicultural and seeks justice in a broken world. Students will express what they have experienced and learned through a short film created in groups presented at a Friday showcase. Students will stay in LMU housing for the week. Overview: The interns will have the opportunity to learn from a multidisciplinary team within UCLA’s Children’s Hospital both in the Westwood and Santa Monica campuses (Primarily Westwood at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center). Interns will be exposed to Social Work practice which includes working with physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, music therapists, Child Life Specialists, massage therapists, Spiritual Care chaplains and many community partners.
Emblematic Group VR/AR Internship Mentor(s): Nonny de la Peña - Founder, Victoria Mejia-Dai - Studio Manager, Kevin Tsukii - Producer Overview: As the pioneer of documentary based VR content, the Emblematic Group aims to teach cutting edge techniques and practices to create engaging and impactful virtual reality (VR) content. Given that the student already has a basic understanding of the field we will challenge the student further and ask them to familiarize themselves with the VR industry and content, identify what aspects of this story-telling medium are unique and can be leveraged to create an impactful and insightful experience. Responsibilities: • 50% Work with other interns to create a well-designed VR experience. • 15% Create a weekly newsletter about the VR industry to be distributed to the staff. • 10% Journal about what they learn about the VR industry from articles, blogs and Emblematic Group staff members • 5% Attend and engage in talks with Emblematic Group staff in department round table • discussions. • 5% Brainstorm about ideas for VR news experiences. Mentor: Judge Eric Taylor (father of Haley Taylor ‘15) Overview: The purpose of this position is to provide an opportunity to gain experience working in an office environment and to learn about judicial court functions by performing a variety of administrative support tasks related to the program area. The work typically is performed under the close supervision of a regular permanent Court employee. Responsibilities: Under direct supervision, volunteers perform basic clerical and office support duties while learning court policies and practices. They provide assistance to the Court in carrying out these duties while receiving practical work experience and skill development opportunities, and learning court procedures, operations functions and various activities. Overview: Laurie Sefton is the Founder, Artistic Director and resident choreographer of Clairobscur Dance. Responsibilities: Interns will work side-by-side with the company Director and the Administrative Coordinator. Internship duties and activities might involve, but are not limited to, one or more of the following areas: • •

Volunteer Management/Staff Management: Recruiting, training, placing, managing, and organizing volunteers Fundraising: Work with Director, Administrative Coordinator and Guild on special events, foundation/corporate grants and the personal solicitations of major donors Public Relations/Marketing: Communication and development of a far reaching social media campaign including multiple platforms, and working directly with the Artistic Director in the development and implementation of Facebook campaign and social media strategy. The Gotham Group Mentor: Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, (mother of Caroline Vein ‘18) Overview: The Gotham Group is a talent management and production company that will provide interns with an expansive overview of the entertainment business. As managers, Gotham not only represents top writers including Chase Palmer, Danny Strong, Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson, but directors such as Wes Ball, David Sandberg, and Henry Selick. The talent client roster also includes actors Freida Pinto, Constance Wu, Steven Yeun, and Steve Buscemi. The Gotham Group is the largest aggregator of book and comic book titles in the entertainment industry and has many relationships with several publishers including Little Brown and Simon & Schuster. Gotham has a unique specialization in animation, and dominates in representing talent in this arena. On the producing side, Gotham produced the hit film franchise, THE MAZE RUNNER, which the final installment is set to be released in early 2018. Most recently KODACHROME, starring Jason Sudeikis, Elizabeth Olsen, and Ed Harris, premiered at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), and is set to be released in 2018 by Netflix. On the television side, Gotham is producing BIOPUNK starring Star Trek’s Zachary Quinto. Responsibilities: Interns will learn the ropes by shadowing assistants on desks, reading books and writing coverage, attending client meetings, answering phones, and obtaining business knowledge through general office assistance. Requirements: Interest in books, animation, live action film and television. Must be a self-starter and eager to participate in a team environment. Time Frame: TBD # of Positions: 5 Eligibility: Rising juniors and seniors America’s Funniest Home Videos Mentor: Vin DiBona (Marymount Board of Trustees, father of Cara Swartz ‘90) Overview: As described on the Vin Di Bona Productions website, “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (known as AFV), is the longest-running primetime entertainment series in the history of ABC. After over twenty-five seasons and millions of video submissions, AFV is distributed in over 103 countries around the world, and appears as fifteen local versions around the globe. Responsibilities: Working to promote the show in social media, digital media, and content creation, among other things. Requirements: Interest and knowledge in comedy, writing, editing, video editing, and social media. Must be a self-starter and eager to participate in a team environment. Overview: Skydance is a diversified media company founded by David Ellison in 2010 to create high quality, eventlevel entertainment for global audiences. The Company brings to life stories of immersive worlds across its feature film, television, and interactive platforms. Its upcoming slate includes Mission: Impossible 6, Gemini Man, World War Z 2, and a new Terminator film in addition to past hits contributing to nearly $5 billion in worldwide box office. In 2017, Skydance formed an animation division to develop and produce a slate of high-end feature films and is in production on two films: Luck and Split. Skydance Television launched in 2013. Its current slate includes Emmy-nominated Grace and Frankie on Netflix, Altered Carbon on Netflix, Jack Ryan on Amazon, Condor on AT&T Audience Network, and Dietland on AMC. Skydance Interactive launched in 2016 to create and publish virtual reality experiences including the critically acclaimed Archangel and upcoming Terminator and The Walking Dead VR games.
