Dr. Levi is a Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Interventional Pediatric Cardiology at Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA. Dr. Perens is a Professor of Pediatric Cardiology and Director of 3-D in the Congenital Heart Center.

Dr. Levi regularly performs minimally invasive procedures to fix and palliate children with congenital heart disease including valve replacement, stenting and closing holes. He is also involved with research to develop new devices for children with congenital heart disease. Participants in this internship will observe interventional and open-heart surgeries on children with Dr. Levi alongside his UCLA Fellows.

Dr. Perens will teach the students to make 3-D prints of hearts of children for whom procedures are being considered. Mock procedures will be performed on the 3-D printed hearts to simulate potential procedures.

Responsibilities:

We need students to help with two tasks:

1. To make 3-D prints for us to use in preparation for procedures and surgeries.

2. To help make videos explaining these procedures to parents and patients.

Pre-procedural preparation for cases will include an understanding of the congenital heart anatomy and the procedural indications and goals. Students will observe catheter based and open-heart procedures (if possible) and will be asked to summarize the procedures. Students will be challenged to make 3-D prints from CT scans and MRIs of hearts of real patients with congenital heart disease in preparation for potential surgeries. 3-D printing will require the students to “segment” the heart anatomy and actually do the printing (either at Marymount or UCLA).

We will also be asking the students to help make, edit and narrate video segments explaining the surgeries and catheterbased procedures. These videos will be posted on the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cardiology website.

Minimum Requirements:

Participants must have a proven record of accomplishment in science and math courses along with a great deal of self-starting skills. Pre-existing skill set in 3-D printing would be desirable.
