Letter From

THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Marymount Families and Friends, The 2018-2019 academic year was dynamic, not only for the individual and collective achievements of our school community, but in the affirmation of our mission within the daily life of our school. The young women who comprise the Class of 2019 are well positioned to enrich their colleges and communities through their leadership and example. Our school community will miss their persistence, creativity, insight, and unique spirit, and we are proud to celebrate our newest graduates in this issue of M. Throughout its history, Marymount has been blessed by the thousands of students, trustees, parents, alumnae, Les Anges, faculty, and staff who have partnered with the school in affirming the educational vision of our Founding Order through their generosity and care. The enclosed Annual Report acknowledges those benevolent donors whose involvement in the 2018-2019 fundraising campaigns have made such a tremendous difference in the life of our school including the ability to attract and retain outstanding faculty, and to grant an increasing amount of financial assistance to deserving and qualified students. There is no doubt that the foundation that was laid at Marymount almost a century ago continues to resonate in the hearts of our students today. We were honored to host the Global Network of RSHM Schools on our campus this past summer, and we rejoice in the vibrancy of the Marymount spirit that unites us in mission for the common good. The legacy of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary lives on in perpetuity through our students, alumnae, and their families. With gratitude,

JACQUELINE L. LANDRY Head of School

MISSION I SO A FOCUS ON

MS I N BY JEREMY LEVINE

Every Faculty / Staff meeting throughout the school year features a "Focus on Mission" segment, at which a faculty member presents on the ways in which mission goals are incorporated into the classroom. Social Studies Teacher Jeremy Levine was honored to present at our May 2019 meeting. He spoke to colleagues about the ways in which Marymount’s mission both informs and enriches the Social Studies curriculum — a topic he also presented on at the Global Network of RSHM Schools conference in July.

AS I HAVE HEARD AND LISTENED TO STORIES FROM COLLEAGUES

around the world during the Global Network of RSHM Schools Conference, I am awe-inspired by this Marymount family who are united as one in service to the unique mission that is shared by all of our schools. As educators, we systematically seek to break stereotypes in our collective vision to inspire young people to work as global citizens in shaping a more just world. The question becomes, how in our 21st century school do we do this?

An answer is teaching to instill a sense of creativity, courageousness, and empathy. In the Social Studies department, we approach world events with an analytical lens; mastering cause-and-effect analysis, continuities and changes over time, and other historical thinking skills. Our emphasis on factual analysis, college-level research, and writing keeps the Social Studies department grounded. In many ways, it is both our comfort and our security blanket. This past year, we focused on the mission goal of encouraging and promoting personal and spiritual growth, 18

which lent itself to many avenues of academic integration. In the classroom, putting Mission in action is actually quite transcendent with several simple steps. The following are examples of ways in which these steps are incorporated in our Social Studies classrooms:

Make it

PERSONAL WHILE PREPARING THE 10TH GRADE MODERN WORLD HISTORY

course unit on genocide with a focus on the Holocaust, I remembered the stories that I have personally heard from survivors who inspired the detour in my own life from law school student to educator. I remembered stories from Sidonia Lax who, as a young Polish girl, survived the Warsaw ghetto and life in AuschwitzBirkenau because she ate raw onions and garlic for nourishment, and she built muscle from breaking rocks

along the ghetto walls. But most of all, I remembered the various responses that survivors gave when asked about their relationship with God during and after liberation in 1945. It was this memory and relationship that our Social Studies faculty decided to explore in Modern World History.

CONSULT Colleagues

TEAMING WITH THE RELIGIOUS STUDIES DEPARTMENT , we came up with the idea of bridging their established theme of “God in times of struggle” to “How does one find God in times of great despair?”

We explored the question of “How does one find God in the Holocaust?” This was the basis of a Socratic Seminar that tested our students’ abilities to cite a variety of researched evidence to bolster their own personal opinions through a question that combined both faith and history. Responses ranged from the acts of courageousness and bravery of Germans and Poles protecting and sheltering Jewish families from the marauding Gestapo/SS soldiers to acts of memorializing memories, the very act of liberation and vindication of the Nuremberg Trials to being able to educate and learn about just some of the lives of the 6 million who perished. It was this moment that as a Social Studies teacher, I witnessed the manifestation of Christian faith and spirit in the classroom.

change-makers of the future. As a Marymount School, kept pillars of our education is questioning, maturing in faith, and exploring one’s relationship with God, in seeking fullness of life for all.

EDUCATE The whole Girl

WE TEACH HISTORY BECAUSE IT IS ONE OF THE FEW DISCIPLINES THAT ENCOURAGES A RETROSPECTIVE, PRESENT, AND PROSPECTIVE LENS OF THE WORLD. As Social Studies teachers, we seek to make the subject come alive to students through our passion and enthusiasm, analysis of stimulating images and text, and engaging activities that relate to real life occasions.

This past year, the Social Studies department focused on developing three simple and yet profound personal traits: courage, empathy, and creativity. Courage in discussing controversial geopolitical topics. Empathy by understanding the fears and paranoia that exist in minority populations, and creativity to cooperatively solve real-world problems with new-aged thinking. Students conducted research in vast scholarly databases to memorialize Holocaust survivors and their stories into augmented reality for future generations of students. Upon completion of this project, one student reflected upon how powerful the project was as it enabled the students to forever memorialize the memories of a time they hope to never personally witness. As teachers, we endeavor to educate on literally every fascinating, grand, transcendent event of the world per our respective subjects. As a teacher at one of our Global Network of RSHM Schools, I believe that I am in good company knowing that our students promote our shared values in the lives of one another, and on all of the other lives and communities they touch. We fulfill our mission every day, as evidenced by the comradery and morality that is exhibited by our students in the classrooms, in the courtyards, on stage, in auditoriums, and on playing fields. How blessed we are to have the opportunity to share in this mission. n

We must recognize that our students are the

Excerpts from the Student Commencement Speech ANDRIANA MARIJIC BULJUBASIC '19

As I look onto Senior Lawn, I can’t help but remember the countless Mondays in which we found ourselves quickly shuffling to communities in blazer dress uniform, giggling as our penny loafers hit the grass. Yet, here I stand in the very same spot, amongst the incredibly accomplished Class of 2019 in a celebration of our last four years at Marymount together. What a bittersweet moment! We stand on the brink of an extraordinary change that will disperse us across the country, even across the globe, away from our home here at Marymount. As one of the most one-of-akind and insanely talented classes to ever set foot on this campus, our shared experiences have bound us to one another. At Marymount, we have begun to walk along the path to discovering ourselves and what we could contribute to our world as confident, intelligent, and well-rounded young women. We have also developed the ability to apply what we learn through our united moral fiber of compassion perfectly demonstrated through our devotion to the RSHM goal of ensuring “That all may have life and have it to the full.” Whether it has been through individualized community service, explorative internships, or fervid discussions of human rights in our classes, Marymount has prepared us to use our knowledge for good and as future leaders of our world. Yet, there is one question that has never felt more real than today: what now? Bradley Whitford perfectly worded the advice I wish to pass along to my incredible class: “Take action. Every story you've ever connected with, every leader you've ever admired, every puny little thing that you've ever accomplished is the result of taking action. You have a choice. You can either be a passive victim of circumstance or you can be the active hero of your own life.” Each of you has such unique talents and callings that you have cultivated in high school and these will only continue to flourish in college. Yet, your enormous potential will hold no weight without the confidence and fearlessness we, as a class, have developed together. Believe in the power of your voice and although life will become different and difficult at times, understand that each of your inherent desires to spur true change will remain constant. Although we may not realize it, we are living during a pivotal turning point for women in our world. We see female leaders, pioneers, and role models rising up and succeeding. After all, a record 127 women were sworn into Congress this year alone. We are undoubtedly part of this change and coming from such a tight-knit community of supporting one another as young women, we will be the ones leaving our marks not only on Marymount, but on our world as a whole. We can persevere. We are equipped with the tools we need for the future. We stand ready to begin a life of our own. Embrace your potential and remember these people and this place which has inspired you to do so. M - THE MARYMOUNT MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2019

W

hen Carol Liu '01 transferred to Marymount her Sophomore year, she remembers how she was in awe of all the class offerings, co-curricular opportunities, and the beautiful campus. To her, it was an atmosphere that inspired her and supported her to follow worthy pursuits. “There was always a spiritual awareness, more evident to me now when I reflect on it,” Carol shares. During her junior year at Marymount, she mounted an outside institutional exhibition about forgotten war crimes and the Rape of Nanking. She describes this moment as a seminal experience in which she knew she could make a social impact as a high school student. “I credit the atmosphere of service and social justice work to this school,” Carol says, and it is one that she considers a key point in the arch of her career trajectory. As an Independent Film and VR Director, Producer and Screenwriter at U-Ma Studios, Carol is passionate about using both film and virtual reality to revisit history and bring to light the untold stories of marginalized figures. Through her work, she seeks to produce original, cinematic VR content, focusing on inclusive, emotionally engaging stories to delve into unexplored narratives.

Carol is especially interested in shedding light on misunderstood and marginalized figures, with the goal of sparking imagination, inciting curiosity, and generating empathy. Carol’s groundbreaking VR experience, Marie Antoinette, delves into the true history behind the ill-fated, historically misrepresented queen. It was presented at Cannes Film Festival's NEXT Marché, Oculus Connect, and was an official selection of Busan International Film Festival. It is now in development as a cinematic VR series, The Redemption of Marie Antoinette. Carol firmly believes that the all-girls environment at Marymount allowed her to focus on her own potential more fully than a co-ed environment would have. She credits photography teacher, Mr. Tom Zimmerman, with having “opened her photographic eye,” and shares that the summer she spent learning from him was key to her development as a filmmaker. Carol encourages today’s students to “be unabashedly who you are. We each have come to this world with our unique traits for a reason, so love yourself for who you are, and all that you can be!” n

KEELEY

Abram '09 PROFESSION Firefighter for the Los Angeles City Fire Department

EDUCATION BA in Psychology, University of Connecticut

CURRENT RESIDENCE Manhattan Beach, Calif.

K

eeley Abram '09 is one of the 3.1% of female firefighters within the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).

A yearning to stay active and an innate curiosity for a challenge, coupled with the desire to work in the medical arena led Keeley to enter this competitive career. However, being a woman in this field has its pressures. She utilizes discipline, motivation and the anticipation of the unknown to help weather the physical, mental, and psychological rigors of training and the job. “It can sometimes be overwhelming to be one of the few women in this male-dominated field, and your actions can feel like they’re highlighted,” Keeley shares. “But to overcome this, I do everything I can to keep improving and learning so that I do my best every day.” Nonetheless, her love of the job radiates through any potential adversity. “I love that I never know what my day will be like. I always have to think on my toes,” Keeley reflects, as she discusses what excites her the most about her line of work. Among the things that Keeley most enjoys is the camaraderie and support among the crew, the challenge of bringing physical skills and mental abilities to play during emergencies, and the opportunity to provide critical, life-saving services in a moment of need.

Helping others is innate within Keeley. In addition to fighting fires, she is also a trained Emergency Medical Responder, and she takes an active role in community outreach and education. Working with LAFD’s girl camp – a camp in which girls ages 14-18 are invited to learn through hands-on experience about the job and duties of being a firefighter – has allowed Keeley to help shift the paradigm of this predominantly maledominated profession. “I love being able to pass on my knowledge and give back to young girls because I never knew about these opportunities when I was their age,” Keeley shares. While reflecting on her time at Marymount, Keeley says that she was pushed both academically and athletically to meet her potential in an environment that always empowered women. Playing volleyball as a Sailor prepared her for the mental resilience that her career now requires. While in high school, she would strive for her personal best – an ambition which has followed her through college and remains with her today. And when thinking about the ways in which she has approached her life and career, Keeley looks to future and current Sailors to take the leaps that may seem like the roads less traveled. “Try new things as much as possible,” Keeley says. “Don’t be afraid to fail.” n

VIRGINIA Levanas '03 PROFESSION Pediatric Oncology Nurse at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

EDUCATION BA in Cultural Anthropology, Duke University MS in Nursing, UCLA

CURRENT RESIDENCE Studio City, Calif. 62

M - THE MARYMOUNT MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2019

V

irginia Levanas '03 knows well the empathy and care required to navigate the complexities of the medical profession. As a Pediatric Oncology Nurse at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Virginia combines the comprehensive psychosocial aspects of patient care with the clinical requirements of her career. Working with children from the time they are diagnosed and through their extraordinary recovery, as well as through the hardship of relapse and end-oflife care, she is motivated daily by the resiliency and grace of kids enduring the unspeakable. “I journal about patient experiences that I want to remember – both the good and the bad – because I feel so lucky to bear witness to such incredible human interactions,” Virginia shares. She takes solace in the ability to stand alongside families through their journey and to provide support in ameliorating their stay while in her care.

become the service-oriented, curious, team-player she is today. “Marymount taught me that nobody will make change for us – we have to actively be the agent of change. It is here that I learned that service is the one way we can directly affect change in our world,” Virginia shares. After graduating from college, Virginia worked at a non-profit organization where she helped homeless individuals find employment - it was the same nonprofit where she had volunteered for her Kingdom Fair project her Junior year at Marymount. “As I developed as an adult, I learned that service is fundamental in creating meaning in my life. Helping others energizes me and gives me purpose. It allows me to continuously give back to the community,” Virginia describes.

Mary mount taught me that nobody will m ak e change f or us, w e have to actively b e the agent of chan ge . “I had a patient who was on our unit for almost an entire year and the nursing staff fell in love watching him grow and develop,” Virginia recalls. “I remember changing the lyrics to a song so that it was all about him and he loved it! Sometimes, it would be the only thing that would make him laugh or calm down during his stressful procedures. “Pretty soon, everyone in the unit knew the song and used it as a way to ease his frustrations and pain. I'll never forget the relief on his mother's face when she would see her son smile.” Knowing that she is doing her part to improve the quality of life for the children on her floor is one of the many reasons that Virginia first came into this field. She credits her education at Marymount with helping her

“I feel so honored to stand beside kids and their families as they navigate cancer treatment and to work with an incredible team of medical professionals to deliver comprehensive, collaborative and innovative care,” she shares. Being entrusted with the lives of children is more than Virginia could ask for in a profession, and as a frequent career forum panelist and mentor, Virginia has enjoyed sharing her journey with current Marymount students. When asked what piece of advice she can give to our girls as they look toward their futures, Virginia considers her own career trajectory and how fulfilled she is in her work. “Only you know what can make you happy,” she shares. “Find something you’re passionate about and everything else will fall into place.” n

CLASS NOTES

1960s Susan Cain Tellem '63 writes, “We lost our forever home in the Malibu Woolsey Fire on Nov. 9, 2018. We also lost our turtle hospital for our nonprofit American Tortoise Rescue. The fire burned through the rescue as well, but St. Francis saved the 50 some turtles and two roosters who sheltered in place. A miracle. His statue was the only thing that remained in front of the house debris after the fire. Bless you! See www.tortoise.com for more information about American Tortoise Rescue and its current fundraising campaigns.
