Master’s Thesis Project - Bridge, Stockholm, Sweden Degree project for the Master’s program Urbanism Studies at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Shortlisted and published as outstanding, competition Creative Conscience, UK. Concept and context. This proposal is based on a Master’s thesis research that uses the Holocaust and its memorials as a lens for reflecting contemporary challenges of migration and displacement. Millions of Jews died in the concentration camps and shooting operations, and thousands of them perished while escaping from their home countries. Today the place or ethnicity of origin still determines the value of human lives, meaning the theme of displacement is more a socio-spatial problem, rather an ethical issue.
Bridge project questions traditional ways of memorialization by addressing the current issues, combining a place of memory with transit public space, and working on the edge between urban design and public art. This urban intervention serves as a physical metaphor for homelessness, draws public attention to a specific issue, and bridges the emotional and discursive gap between traumatic past and challenging present. Date. April-May 2018.

A metal frame placed on the bridge between iconic towers in Stockholm city center is filled with archetypal shapes that together form a unique spatial experience for those who want to cross a bridge. A passer through who happens to walk here should enter this transparent but chaotic construction and find his or her own exit through narrow paths, stairs, whimsically connected closed and opened spaces. Confusion, isolation, and disorientation are, probably, common feelings among those who are on their way to a new home.

Over the Wall We Go
International Placemaking Studio - Rethinking the Public Realm Bundesallee, Berlin, Germany Group study project for the Master’s program Urbanism Studies at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in collaboration with TU Berlin. Concept and urban context. The title Over the Wall We Go was inspired by the song of David Bowie who had lived in Berlin for three years and converted this significant experience into a famous “Berlin Trilogy. A railway and a highway A100 built in the 60s not only connected different parts of the city but simultaneously divided Bundesalee becoming a wall between the neighborhoods. Additionally to its literal meaning, this phrase can be interpreted as an effort to think outside the box, escape from unpleasant conditions or deconstruct the symbolical walls between people. Besides, another wall played a significant role in a history of Berlin which makes the title a link between the project and the city where it takes place. Finally, Over the Wall We Go represents that our project is supposed to encourage action and moving forward.
The placemaking project envisions creating strong community ties in making a better place out of the existing leftover spaces in Bundesallee. Currently Bundesallee is percieved rather as a transit corridor than a place. This project identifies a stretch along the existing bridge and railway infrastructure as a key axis which in the future can create a new centrality for the whole area. Date. January-March 2018. The chosen stretch is a node of boundaries between two administrative districts (Tempelhof-Schรถneberg and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf), and interest of other stakeholders such as a municipality, U-bahn, Deutsche Bahn, etc. A rigid wall, dark underlit bridges, unmaintained strips along the highway and parking garages are not fully used today, though, provide potential opportunities for placemaking in the future. They could be effectively transformed into a place for the community built by the community with the experts moderation. Besides, once transformed this place could serve as a prototype for similar conditions occuring along the railway line stretch throughout Berlin. Hence, providing a framework for building the community networks is the first step of the project. By identifying the local actors and creating a platform for the design we hope to provoke changes from the small events and minor interventions to the transformation of bicycle roads and underbridge infrastructure.

Placemaking tools The placemaking project focuses on building the community first and then using the community as neighbourhood experts in evolving design strategies. A framework for participation and community building is proposed through the tools which are presented on this page. The #mybundesallee project launches a placemaking week to identify local actors and volunteers who would form the Bundesalleebuddy group. This network of actors becomes a key in taking the concepts of placemaking forward with the help of experts and the municipality. This process helps in creating a sense of ownership and identity.

Design strategies The design strategy involved identifying potential areas of intervention that could serve the community and also be built and maintained by it. 7 interventions of different scales – along the wall, under the wall, and over the wall – induce new programmes and missing links. Besides, all the proposed activities encourage people to interact with each other both during the process of installation and use. Existing car parking along the edges and the garages have been removed in making space for a continuous bicycle lane and new edge activities such as community gardens and a dog park. The bridges have been treated as a gallery space, community center, and children’s play area. A watch tower built by the people adds a new dimension to the trail and becomes a vertical urban living room.

Advanced Urbanism Studio - Urban Spaces of the City Odenplan, Stockholm, Sweden Group study project for the Master’s program Urbanism Studies at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Context. Odenplan was named after Norse god Odin and has undergone multiple iterations since it emerged from the rural area surrounding Stockholm’s Old Town in the 1800s. By 1900, its trapezoidal shape took form between streets and it’s use as a park confirmed its status as a public space. In 1906, the Gustaf Vasa Church was built on one side of the park, iconically altering Stockholm’s skyline and the views of anyone in the space. Odenplan has remained a public space and by the mid 20th century had taken on a function as a transit connection zone. This legacy has stuck and its underground station serves tens of thousands of people a day.

The changes we propose are to renovate the existing pavilions, namely the metro and train entrance and the bicycle parking, and to add green space to Odenplan, creating an interface with the park surrounding Gustaf Vasa Kyrka that can be pedestrianized. Renovation of the pavillions. We propose the replacement of the existing pavilion with a single volume that makes visible its entry points to users emerging and entering from all directions, therefore enhancing the navigational experience. Renovation of the bike parking facility. There are currently multiple bike-related facilities and spaces on Odenplan, namely underground bike parking, a bike share checkpoint, and informal bike parkingspaces. We propose the consolidation of these functions into a single pavilion. Addition of green space. We recommend the passage of Upplandsgatan between Odengatan and Karlbergsvagen be pedestrianized during all times outside of peak weekday commute hours. On the west side of Odenplan, benches and greenery will be installed, adding a space where commuters and locals can enjoy the space.

Nordic Studio - Designing Urban Public Places Södertälje, Sweden Individual study project for the Master’s program Urbanism Studies at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Urban development context. The project site is located in a peripheral zone in the South of Södertälje. It has a good connection with a new residential district, wood, large residential area with the housing of different typologies and Östertälje. According to the Programm of Sustainable Development of Södertälje for 2009-2029, the municipality has a plan to build in the neighborhood a massive residential area. Closeness to the center of the settlement was considered as an advantage for integrating new districts into existing urban fabric. One of the design proposals suggests creating 300 residential buildings on this very site and 600 residential buildings in the entire South area along the canal. Additionally, the project provides a construction of a new waterfront.
Aim and objectives. The aim of the urban development proposal is to transform the current wasteland into safe and attractive public space for the needs of the future residential area. In the future this place could benefit the town as an important local public space alternative to the central parks, squares, and waterfronts. Considering the fact that the most attractive and comfortable public spaces are centralized in the middle of Södertälje development of peripheral areas should be one of the priorities. Project development. This project suggests the development of the site divided into two stages. The first stage includes constructing a waterfront promenade to connect the center of Södertälje and the future residential area. The second stage provides a solution for the future needs of the district by multifunctional public space. Date. September-October 2017. Grade. B.

Fill the Cube. Feel the Cube This project was designed as a game with a modular trade pavilion for the Effix Pavilion competition in Varna, Bulgaria. Each module has a cube shape with a pitched roof. Simple metal base frame provides an oppotrunity to create different laconic but expressive shapes and fill them with any material: glass, wood, OSB, metal, concretepanels or billboards. There are three basic variations of connecting the modules together into the blocks and an unlimited number of their combinations. The main decorative pattern of the pavilions reminds of concrete breakwaters on Varna coast. Triangles create a unique surface by joining together; besides, they provoke various associations: sea, beach, stars at nighttime or some recognizable features of the socialistic architectural heritage.

House on a Hill This residential house was designed for a family with a child. Both parents are young doctors. The customer was planning to build the house mainly by himself, using simple factory constructions and cheap local materials. Therefore the building was conceived as small, compact, with a clear constructive structure, comfortable for living with children and one of the grandparents. Location is excellent and quite unusual for Belarus: this place is very hilly and pictorial. The building is designed on a place of a former customer’s grandmother country house that is why saving the spirit of the place and creating a cozy family residence were my goals.

Social Activity Minsk, Belarus
Event management In September 2016 I moderated a panel discussion “Evolution of Public Spaces/ Evolution of Publicity”. My colleague in this initiative was a chief editor of the urban almanac “City Tactics” Dmitry Gavrusik who invited me to organize and moderate this event. The discussion itself and the question-answer part featured an excellent multidisciplinary team invited for the case: an architect, a philosopher, a cultural activist, an economist and an expert in public administration.
Volunteering During 2013-2014 I had been a volunteer of the “Mivia” program. Its main activity is organizing guided tours with visually impaired and blind people. A modeling department was founded for creating the models of important touristic places and buildings in Minsk, Belarus. I was a member of a modeling team in the project “Touch Minsk” that created an audio-tactile model of the concert hall in the building of a former Basilian monastery. By pushing a button a person could play one of the several sound fragments about the history of the building. Such an interactive inclusion made people more interested and, what was more important for our target audience, independent. Writing and editing Being an alumna of the European College of Liberal Arts (ECLAB) I was one of the authors of the pilot issue of the students zin E.NOTE in August 2015. Next year I was not only a participant of an alumni club but also an author, a co-manager and a member of an editorial board team of the second issue which contained my essay about public spaces. The further experience in editing I acquired as a partner of the urban almanac «City Tactics». Additionally, I participate in essay competitions and publish my articles on a few Russian and Belarusian websites.
