The President's Message My pride in the office of President of the Fund, to which I was elected in 1962 ? has grown and grown with the years that have since passed, as I bear witness to the Fund's advancement in its charitable work, for not only has there been the building of the New Wing at Brinsworth completed in early 1976 and its capital cost of ÂŁ260,000 specially raised between the Spring of 1973 and the close of 1977, but rewardingly. too, is its splendid progress in its work in the field of social welfare amongst those of the profession in need. It is therefore a matter of the greatest gratification that during the past 12 months the Executive Committee of the Fund accorded to me the signal honour in appointing me the first Life President of the Fund. As I present my last Royal Variety Performance, which I first started presenting in 1958, I pause to pay tribute to the great help, tirelessness of effort, skills, time and talents of Robert Nesbitt as Director over all these years, as I must also acknowledge Billy Marsh who has given me his unstinting support. Then there is Reg Swinson, as Secretary of the Fund, who in his earnestness, makes a very great contribution in his own way. My good wishes go to Louis Benjamin, who takes over after tonight the presentation of Royal Variety Performances. I feel sure Louis will have much success. I shall gladly assist him. Indeed I know that Louis, in calling on that assistance, will with me in the future, as he has in the past, encourage those within the Fund to raise revenue from shows other than Royal Variety Performances. It is for me a comforting thought, that the 1978 Royal Variety Performance, the last that I shall solely present, is to be a Tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, whose presence we all warmly welcome tonight. Fittingly, the bill, all British, I know will echo from the Palladium stage and subsequently through the medium of television in our Tribute, the affection of the British people for the Queen Mother.

The Entertainment Artistes Benevolent Fund 1908-1978: Seventy Years Old
As the curtain rings up for the 1978 Royal Variety Performance there is both reward and satisfaction in the harvest, this particular year has brought us. There is the historical factor of the Fund's 70th Birthday—seventy years of progress, in which it has furthered and developed the range of its charitable work for the profession and the building of two new wings onto Brinsworth House, its Home at Twickenham for 'old pro's'. Then there is another historical fact, that in 1978 the Executive Committee of the Fund, anxious to suitably acknowledge the enormity of Lord Delfont's service to the Fund in the office of President, appointed His Lordship Life President —the first time such an appointment has been made. Elsewhere in this Brochure, reference is made to the fact that after tonight, further Royal Variety Performances are to be presented and arranged by Louis Benjamin, a Vice-President of the Fund and Managing Director of Moss Empires and The Palladium. We feel confident that the great history of success Lord Delfont has fashioned and brought to the Royal Variety Performance will be continued in the person of Louis Benjamin. The Fund is exceptionally fortunate to be so lucky as to enjoy the privilege of saying "thank you", to Lord Delfont for his greatness, in both success and sincerity and at the same time, to know that the mantle of success will fall onto the shoulders of a man destined we believe, to be a truly great successor, to whom we wish all good fortune. Then there is, in this year 1978 in the meaning of tonight's Royal Variety Performance, our Tribute to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. As we proudly receive and welcome Her Majesty tonight let us through these columns, with hearts and hands and voices affectionately sing out our acclaim for our beloved Queen Mother.
LOUIS BENJAMIN MANAGING DIRECTOR LONDON PALLADIUM
Terry Cantor has spent his whole life in Show Business as Comedian, Producer, Writer and Revue, Summer Season and Pantomime Promoter. He was the first person in the 81 years history of the Grand Order of Water Rats, to receive a Bar to the Badge of Merit, and is a past King Rat, Grand Councillor and Trustee of the famous Order. Terry Cantor is the Producer for the Fund of the Midnight Matinee that takes place each year at Blackpool, and also produced the two Royal Gala Shows at Windsor, one in 1972 and the other in 1974. Married Adele of the Jeff Mandel Trio. They worked together for many years in a double act. Terry was made King Rat in 1967 and in 1969 Adele was made Queen Ratling of the Grand Order of Lady Ratlings, thus bringing two distinguished, coveted professional honours to this husband and wife combination. Appointed a Vice President of the Fund, January 1971 for special services rendered and elected its Chairman 22nd May, 1972.

TERRY CANTOR HON. CHAIRMAN: ENTERTAINMENT ARTISTES' BENEVOLENT FUND
Richard Afton has spent his entire working life in showbusiness, including Theatre, Films, and is one of the pioneers of Television. He joined the BBC in 1947, and in the ensuing nineteen years as Senior Producer specialising in Light Entertainment, he devised and produced many hundreds of shows including the biggest Spectaculars ever seen on television. In his career, he was responsible for introducing over 3,000 new artistes to television including over sixty stars whom he discovered and helped to create. Because of this, the National press nicknamed him the Starmaker—a name which has stuck to this day. Included in this list are the Television Toppers whom he founded, named and controlled during his years with the BBC. Today he is one of the top columnists in Fleet Street on the subject of TV and Radio. His weekly column in the London Evening News is accepted as one of the most, if not the most influential in its field, and is compulsive reading for the profession. In 1952 he married Gillian Creighton Blair, lead dancer of the Toppers, and they have two sons, Richard aged 22 and Charles aged 19.
