Troost Market Collective

Tools Photoshop, Sketchup, Vray

During the summer of 2018, I developed concept renders to support the growth of Troost Market Collective. The Troost Market Collective (TMC) was created to be a community space for makers and entrepreneurs. Located along the Troost Corridor, TMC consists of several vacant buildings that will be re-purposed to reinvigorate the historic corridor and bridge the divide between East and West neighborhoods of Kansas City, MO. The Troost Market Collective will host artists, makers, and innovators in collective, creative spaces. The aim is to develop programming, host events and classes, and provide resources vital to the growth of creative entrepreneurs. See https://www.troostmarketcollective.org/ for more information about TMC.

50/50 KC: Art Gallery In 2014, two Kansas City Art Institute graduates approached the Kansas City Design Center (KCDC) for help designing a temporary gallery project in the West Bottoms neighborhood of Kansas City. Hannah Lodwick and Cambria Potter had the vision and the means (via a grant and a successful Kickstarter campaign) for 50/50 but needed technical assistance with the design of the gallery itself. The concept of 50/50: two parts equal one whole, is embodied in the careful placement of 2 shipping containers to create a spacious art gallery, which infused cultural life into a neglected neighborhood. My role was to lead a team of students to design the gallery and the outside gathering-space. With the advice of a local architect, we were able to create construction documents to submit to the city for permit. In August 2015, construction was finished, and the gallery opened to a crowd of 200+ people. All photos of the finished project belong to 5050. See http://www.5050kc.com/ for more information.

Donated solar panels further offset the minimal energy use. The team reviewing the documents as we prepare to apply for permit. The vacant parking lot prior to site work. An art exhibit. BELOW: The mission is to activate underutilized urban space by providing a sustainable and progressive platform for exhibiting local and national artist’s work. The concept of 50/50, two parts equaling one whole, is represented in the physical structure as well as in the programming. **All photos of finished project and events belong to 5050.**

Washington Square Park Washington Square Park (WSP) is an under-utilized park in downtown Kansas City, with tremendous potential. The Kansas City Design Center was asked to complete a year-long investigation into how the park can be re-imagined to enhance its surroundings and the city. Based on our analysis and findings, we designed interventions to improve the park. While this was a group project, everything included here is my work. I completed various map and demographic studies of Kansas City, as well as user research and civic amenities research. At various points throughout the year, we presented our work to the stakeholders and community members. I was employed the following summer to compile and edit our work into a 250+ page documentation. For a pdf of the full publication, please visit : www.kcdesigncenter.org/washington-square-park.

The sloped pavilion allows for theater like setting on the north, with the Kansas City skyline as a backdrop. The south side of the pavilion is raised to accomodate a gathering space, restaurant/ concessions, or an open market.

Romana Riley Lofts *While employed with Rosemann & Associates, P.C. The Romana Riley Elementary was in operation from the early 1900’s to the 1990’s, and later used as a community building. This Affordable Housing project received federal and state tax credits for historic building restoration. To be energy efficient and help ensure lower utility bills, the existing structures will be renovated to meet Earth Craft standards. Romana Riley lofts are scheduled to be completed in 2019. The site consists of the Main school building built around 1905, an annex built 10 years later, and an empty lot where the cafeteria once stood. A new building housing 27 new apartments will be built on the vacant lot, and 30 apartments will be divided between the existing buildings.

RIGHT: A new elevator was designed to be located in the breezeway to serve as connector to both buildings. During excavation, it was discovered that the school’s foundation footing was not as we had anticipated, which caused us to redesign the connecting walkway. Every inch counts when designing for an ADA ramp!

RIGHT: The necessity for more space required the use of this basement room. While not originally planned to be removed, the contaminated soil in a section of the basement required special handling in order to meet air quality regulations.

Stonecrest of Wildwood Assisted Living *While employed with Rosemann & Associates, P.C. I was involved in the Stonecrest of Wildwood from the Schematic Design phase. This included coordinating with other consultants to determine the intitial layout of the building and social spaces. The City of Wildwood desires to have a pedestrian friendly downtown. As such, we added street level group spaces with direct access to the sidewalk. These spaces are “community spaces, and are also ammenities for the senior residents. The spaces are a salon/spa, a fitness/wellness room, and a computer/business room. The signature space is the two story Entry Foyer, shown on the opposite page. The interior designer is Faulkner Design. The site had strict boundaries, so the challenge was to find the right spot for the 88? units, while providing equal access to the ammenities, and leave suffient space for emergency vehicles.

Sketches & Gestures Tools Pastel, charcoal, pencil Long before I began my journey to be an Architect, my dream was to be an artist. For senior year of high school, I arranged my schedule so that I spent half of my time in the art studio. I then devoted my first few years at university studying to be an Illustrator. This training in the visual arts adds another level of insight to my skills as an architect. It gave me a solid foundational understanding of design principles and color theory, and a strong appreciation for the arts. I believe that as we study the human figure, we are better able to articulate the beauty of ordinary forms. We are able to organize our mind, calm our mind. This deep focus is my method of meditating.
