Three pillars indicate the three Baltic states juxtaposed in close proximity to each other, similar yet sovereign. They are open and accessible to the viewer to pass through, touch, and experience within.
The three pillars are tightly bound together and a moat segregates the user from being able to experience them in the same manner. This symbolizes the closed society that the Baltics became having lived behind the Iron Curtain for 50 years.
A literal turning point the site represents the turning point in the history of the Baltic people whom engaged in a revolutionary act of protest by using no weapon other than their voices. Tens of thousands of people openly defied their Soviet oppressors in the Singing Revolution by being who they are: The Singing People. The turning point in the site is an amphitheater.
A linear device is employed to represent the Human Chain which united three distinct peoples in non-violent protests against the Soviets. The grand statement of the site is the linear pathway which leads the occupants up off the ground into the air.
The final part of this journey through the site is the summit of a glass cantilever bridge meant to signify the open future for these three peoples of the baltics. While they stare off into the earth’s horizon pondering the future, they may be reminded that the bridge of glass, like all off liberty and freedom can be shattered at any time.
