BETWEEN CITY, GREEN AND WATER A COASTAL DEFENSE PROJECT FOR IJMUIDEN (NL)
IJmuiden is a Northern Holland city as part of the municipality of Velsen. It is located at the estuary of the North Sea Channel, opened in mid-nineteenth century to allow ships to easily reach the port of Amsterdam and the IJsselmeer. IJmuiden is an interesting study case because of its clear connection with two key elements of the landscape: the green and the water. 8

From whatever point you observe it, from North to South, from East to West, IJmuiden reveals a strong relationship with the sea, the waterway, the ZuidKennemerland National Park and the system of dunes parallel to the coast. Yet, despite its evidence, this connection is denied. Therefore, my project aims to make a stitching between the city and these components, by repeating and enhancing the typical Dutch landscape patterns, both rural and for defense, re-interpreting them such as public spaces.

The more distinctive element is the dune system, which allows us to understand the orientation of the project (N/S), interacting simultaneously with the sea front (W), in order to protect the city (E), with the waterway (N), generating the inlets lining the marina, the beach areas and the sport

pavillion, and with the National Park (S), hosting public facilities such us the water gardens, the playground, ect.. Furthermore, the vegetation system, that flows from the canals to the city, helps to emphasize the whole design.

PHASE 1
Because of it, in combination with the atmospheric agents, the appearence of the project may change over time, suggesting the progression from nature to artifice and gradually giving more rooms for public activities. An examples of this is the “dune garden (Figure on the left page), to compose which have been selected shrub spe-
cies resistant not only to the wind and salinity, but also to the frequent frosts to which they could be subjected in the winter time. Moreover, some of them have the characteristic of changing color in the transition from a season to another. Than, on the opposite side of the next dune (as you can see in the section), a free climbing wall.

SANTA CRUZ , TENERIFE - CANARY ISLANDS (SP) The Taco Mount occupies a central position in the city. It is a costantly changing area used as a natural quarry for the extraction of “picon” (Canarian volcanic rock), but always claimed as a potential public space.

MASTERPLAN
The project seeks to enhance the area first using a system of tree-lined paths that allow to climb the slopes of the mountain, making it and its main activities (indoor and outdoor market, bmx park, playground, etc.) entirely accessible and enjoyable; than, the overhanging “plate”, a path that embraces the mountain and stretches itself to form the main square of the urban park, gives vitality to the area even at night with a “pixels system” that, depending on needs, acts as lights, seats, rows of trees, fountains and buildings, and a “light blade” which restores the visibility of a mountain that, despite being at the center of the city, is invisible to the eyes of most.

MODERN CITY GARDEN CITY NEW RESIDENTIAL DISTRICT FOR THE CITY OF MESSINA (SICILY, ITALY)
Since the earthquake of 1908, Messina has undergone drastic and often conflicting processes of reconstruction. First it was redesigned according to the modern urban planning principles, supporting the “garden city” model, and than evolved as one of the main centers of Rationalist architecture in Sicily. That’s why its urban structure appears as an orthogonal grid which, extending from the slopes of the Peloritans mountains to the sea, is sometimes interrupted by arboreal episodes and garden villas. 26

PROJECT AREA
Landlocked town by green
Main automotive road (Viale Giostra)
This is the case of the site on which stands the “L. Mandalari psychiatric hospital, the biggest mental hospital in the nineteenth-century Sicily, built in the late nineteenth century and which safely overcame to the tragic earthquake of 1908. The project area is located in the middle among this fragment of a garden city and the most recent residential buildings. The design of a multifunctional complex, that extends for the entire length of the lot and is lifted from the ground, has the purpose of establishing a rejoining between the two different tracks of the city , clearly separating them, but leaving that they interpenetrate, by alternating vegetation and public spaces. 28

Because of the lenght of the building, the idea is to devided it in two blocks (both for residential and administrative functions) by an additional and pivoting one (containing the gymnasium). Furthermore, the attention turnes on the north and south facades: the first, covering the bedrooms and giving
32
them a view on the garden, is part of a windowed skin that continues on the roof; the second, facing the public square, consists of a perforated sheet that allows the permeation of the sun, but, at the same time, protects and hides walkways and connecting stairs.

PETTINISSA
THE LONG GREEN LINE
A3 HIGHWAY, REGGIO CALABRIA (RC) - ITALY
The A3-SS 106 is an urban ring road parallel to the coast producing not only an effect of degradation in all the areas it passes through, but also a very serious fracture between sea and mountain. It’s an important axle for the urban traffic where are ongoing improvement projects for several millions of euros. 35
Pettinissa is an high sustainability green ridge that runs along the highway from the port of Villa S. Giovanni to the airport of Reggio Calabria and along the rivers that, from it, run into the sea. One of these is the Calopinace. The strategy aims to create a dialogue between elements (tertiary buildings, farmlands, orchards, etc.) that, despite their proximity, are very different. The glue is the new public spaces, such as playgrounds, bike sharing points, agritourisms, urban gardens and product sales at 0 Km, pleasantly immersed in an open-air museum of local tree species (bergamot, bouganville, magnolia grandiflora, laurus nobilis, jasminum, ficus repens, acacia dealbata, etc.) and accessible both by car and walking, but especially by bike thanks to the bike path, which is linked to the more general system of Pettinissa.

The cycling path, that cross the entire park, runs along the Calopinace’s banks, acting as a filter for the various activities that take place here and giving to the southern entrance of the city of Reggio Calabria the dignity not only of a high speed viable place but also to be enjoyed at human speed.

REFURBISHMENT STUDENT HOUSING TO REASSES A DISTRICT OF CATANIA (CT) - ITALY
The project involves a redevelopment, without adding volume, such as the student’s home, of a former agricultural consortium, rationalist complex built around the thirties by Francesco Fiducia in Catania. The new volumes are created by remodeling the existing accretions.

In the main building, characterized by a futurist “architectural nudism”, are a mensa, a library and study rooms. From here, it’s possible to have access to an new structure that constitutes the contemporary facade of the pavilion and puts it in relation to the different areas of the fence: the visitors’ accommodation, the garden and the public square (related with underground car parking). On the other hand, the student housing, spreading over two towers, behind which opens a terrace overlooking the sea (for the exclusive use of the apartments’ users) enjoys a functional and perspective autonomy.

“Sometimes it’s enough a glimpse that opens in the middle of an incongruous landscape, a surfacing of lights in the fog, the dialogue two passersby who meet in the comings and goings, to think that starting from there I will put together piece by piece the perfect city, made of fragments
mixed with the rest, of instants separated by intervals, of signals that one sends and doesn’t know who picks them up.” Italo Calvino, “Invisible cities”, 1972
