+ travelogue in Japanese culture

I had visited 17 countries as a backpacker and had been impressed by scenes, customs, foods and people that are far from my own sense. Then, I noticed that Japanese culture, which I took it for granted, is specific and interesting by comparing with other countries. After that, I set out to travel all over Japan on a motorbike with the purpose of rediscovering Japanese culture.

This is the portfolio that shows my works having tried to develop culture using architecture, art and urban design. Each culture has a suitable way to progress. I

A suitable development for Kyoto

- CITY -

- SUBURBAN CITY -

In Japan, the period when we created an abundance is about to change into the next step when we could deepen the abundance. In the past, green spaces are regarded as the core of communication. However, plants located along streets or between buildings will never contribute to the ecosystem and it must be arranged in some way. Originally, Japanese people have been developing cities by exploiting ecosystem creatively. This proposal is certainly a new ecosystem located underground showing co-existence between people and nature. Unlike the stereotype that urban infrastructure is green space, water is the core that supports an entire underground city. Of course there is no exclusive green.

First, we focused on magnetic fluid, liquid magnets. It is pulled by a magnet like iron sand and is capable to be operated by the magnetic force. In addition, the color of the fluid is ink black that is similar to the color of the ink of calligraphy. We started the project with investigating it thoroughly.

Whole inside systems are as the picture shows. In order to generate a magnetic closely, 36 solenoids are installed like a grid. All solenoids are connected with electronic boards and Arduinos and are controlled by the computer.

ARTIST NAME: Sisyu OCCUPATION: calligraphy, sculpture, painting, media art, glass URL: http://www.e-sisyu.com/

A Japanese calligraphic art representative officially recognized by the Japanese government. Born in Japan, she dedicated herself to creation ever since she started “Shodo” (calligraphy) at the age of six. Moved to Tokyo and started her professional career as a calligrapher. Her creations inherit the traditional “Shodo” and express the transition from the past to a new age of “Shodo” with a new perspective. Using calligraphy, Sisyu has established herself as an artist in Japanese calligraphy and she has expanded this by incorporating them into other art forms such as sculptures, media arts, and painting. This comes in forms of etched iron calligraphy, and floating words which transform into animated animals.

Cotton candy = Cosmos?

The memory of my childhood – the light of paper hand lanterns looked like the Milky Way, and the limited opportunity that I was allowed to mill about in the night excited my simple mind. Since the street stalls made prosperous for a festival were attractive, I was confused about how I should spend my pocket money. However, the most impressive thing was cotton candy that was rolled up with a sweet scent. When I put it in my mouth, I felt the soft and light texture as it melted. The feeling was astonishing. It was like seeing cosmic heavenly bodies while I ate it. I challenged myself because I wanted to recreate the memory that I tasted when I was a kid. Cotton candy that appears from a rotary pot looks like space gas, cosmic dust and the lighting galaxy. In the limited space inside a container, the appearance of the candy generated by the automatic cotton candy machine makes you feel the cosmos that repeats a generation and a disappearance.

ideation

An unstable stable object

It looks unstable but quite stable, like moment of movement of dancer. This is the first concept we have had. The reason why we set the concept is that it could clarify our purpose: joints between iron pipes without welding and soft-kill analysis. It is hoped to produce as unstable as possible and those who stay at the spaces inside the pavilion can experience as if iron pipes are tossed in the air. We have started the project with the term “unstable stable object .

joints

Tsugite, Shiguchi to two joints

Tsugite and Shiguchi are Japanese traditional methods for building structure. These techniques enable to assemble woods without any metal fittings. Even though there are various kinds of methods in Japan, it is difficult to find it outside Japan. Therefore I believe it is one of the sophisticated Japanese skills. Generally speaking, it is created to extend limited length of woods, because it has ability to join materials easily. It comes from serious Japanese culture that we cannot waste much timber, since the number of forests is limited in Japan. We started the project by researching these methods to apply 3D laser cutter. Throughout the development of joints, we noticed that we have to prepare at least two types of joints to complete a structure. It is because there are two kinds of force between two objects: pressure and attraction. Then, we invented two types of joint called “Finger joint” and “Hanging joint” . Finger joint is the joint that iron pipe stabs another one as the name shows. Three fingers make joint be stable as possible. The advantages are the strength against pressures and easily construction. One of three fingers, the longest one, has a role to stop having a turn. Hanging joint is the joint hanging on the other pipe’ s hole. It enables to be pulled because it strongly connect pipes one another. However, it is more difficult to assemble than Finger joint, since it is required to twist them when connecting. Thus, each joint compete each other.

Digital studio is a global science organization. We usually research and produce architecture, design and art by using the latest technologies such as 3D modeling and programming. I had been involved in it since it was organized and found in Tokyo University of Science in 2010, and I became a director in 2013. What I had done during this period was expanding its scale by inviting members from other schools. Consequently, those who have some professional knowledge, for instance, photograph, dance and media art became members. In addition, we had tried to apply the specific field that architects cannot deal with by analyzing it or utilizing the latest technologies. They are like biology, meteorology or physics. There are collaborations with not only students but also companies, artists. We
