Opening Note from Vice Head of the Department of English Language and Literature (Female Section)

Greetings and a warm welcome to the first issue of our Magazine. At the outset, let me say that I am a magazine enthusiast who from my earliest school days has been obsessed with flipping through the pages of Magazines. While technology efficiently delivers news, stories to our desktops, laptops and mobile devices, magazines are all about context—how ideas and images are presented in relation to one another and within a larger point of view. I really believe that no matter whether a magazine is delivered to your doorstep or to your computer, printed on glossy stock or on cheap tabloid paper, appearing on your iPad or your cell-phone screen, it is still and foremost the work of a team. Therefore, I would like to thank colleagues and students for the beautiful and meaningful package of ideas, words and images they prepared for the readers. Dr. Fawziah Harshan

Editorial Note I am delighted to introduce the first issue of our magazine. It is a collective effort of the staff and the students. This issue was created to give staff and in particular the students to express their thoughts, to encourage and motivate them to channelize their ideas, emotions and to instill confidence in them to speak up their mind. The diverse articles in this magazine ranges from general topics to language, literature and reports of various activities that were organized by the staff to give a much needed platform for the students to showcase their talent and creativity. Creating a friendly environment where the students communicate with each other, explore different aspects of their personality, and learn about new things was always my dream and it took shape only with the help and special interest shown by our beloved Dr. Fawziah Harshan. I must say that, this issue would not have been published without the constant support and inspiration by her. Under her guidance the department is successful in achieving the set goals, hoping to reach the moon. I take this opportunity to thank Dr. Fawziah and all the members of the staff and the students who contributed immensely.

nglish Conversation Club

“Learning is not just knowing what to do, but doing what we already know...” -Nourma F. Fawziyah English Conversation Club is chiefly designed for the students who learned English as a second language and wish to improve and practice communication skills. The core purpose is to improvise their level of confidence, offering a friendly atmosphere where they are free to share their problems related to language and thereby learning how to overcome them. Primarily, the Conversation club is tailored on the idea that the students are off from their class room environments as these remain firmly and solely concerned with studies, lessons and exams. Above all, it is conducted by students themselves based on their leisure time; hence it provides them an opportunity to be among the peer groups who are far better in enhancing the language learning skills. Since it offers them a harmonious atmosphere, not being overwhelmed with studies or assignments; they are easily seen coming out of their hesitation and attempting to speak with errors. Eventually, the errors that are spotted are certainly checked out. As a result, the purpose of our Conversation Club is fulfilled where the students learn to overcome language errors. “Remember to dream big, think long-term, under achieve on a daily basis, and take big steps. That is the key to long-term success”-Robert Kiyosaki. Undeniably, the above given idea is apt to our earnest endeavours as a small baby step was taken when the girls, Muneera Alqarnas of level 7 and Sarah Mohammed Majed Alqahtani of level 7 approached us, they brought in an idea to commence the conversation club. Moreover they accepted the new roles to work as a head girl and vice- head respectively. 6 NEWS LETTER VOLUME -1

They had a keen interest to start out the meeting sessions every week. Consequently, fostering this idea with the English Club committee Ms.Hanan Alshehab and Ms. Sara Al ghanem, the initiatives were proceeded to implement. Further, an approval was needed to be taken from the head of English Department, Dr. Fawziah Harshan On hearing this constructive idea, she was extremely glad to embark on this new venture. However, a meeting room had to be looked for and Ms. Mashael having appreciated our views helped us to provide the same. Equally important was social media that facilitated us to seek out the interested students who wish to join the club. The students voluntarily came forward by mentioning their free-time in the on-line applications, as it was, on this basis, we decided to schedule the meetings. Consequently, the two teams: Reporting and Advertising team were formed assuming the crucial tasks that needed to be executed every week. Each team comprises two girls as we decided every alternative week, one of them will assume her role. The interested candidates are as follows: Fayruz Islam of level 1, SaraAbdulaziz Aldaej of level 5 for Reporting team and Mona HamadAljuaidi of level 7 and FatenAbdullah Aljarmah of level 5 for Advertising team respectively came forward to join these teams. To boost their confidence, we decided to give them a certificate for their exceptional qualities of involvement to rendering the reporting and advertising services on the completion of the semester. Meanwhile, to our surprise, we found the girls were not only delighted to join this club but also to explore themselves to learn how to make reports in English. Finally, this gave them an opportunity to learn the essential writing skills apart from the conversation skills.

REPORTS

The teams created a twitter official account for the Conversation club in which the agenda before the meeting session and report after the meeting session were posted regularly. The topics were decided by the organizers comprising Head, vice head girl with their associate teams. The attendance was taken every week based on which the participation certificate shall be awarded to the students. The topics covered on these sessions are as follows: 1. Introduction on the importance of Language. 2. Simple discussion on the role of movies in improving listening and speaking skills. 3. A discussion on students’ dreams in future, job’s dreams, sharing jobs that fit 2030 vision etc. 4. Encouraging through present motivating stories. 5. Discussion hobbies.

on

Surprisingly, the students who conducted the conversation club are keen to continue in the next semester as well. As they stated, out of their experience, this gave them an opportunity to develop their communication skills along with the interpersonal skills. Certainly, we do hold in great esteem the valuable suggestion made by the head of English department that we shall invite the guests of honour to participate in the conversation meeting to give our students a boost to improve their proficiency level. Furthermore, this Conversation club is in collaboration with English and Translation clubs and therefore we retain the same logo but created a new official account on twitter so as to avoid any confusion. For any query and suggestions, you can feel free to post or share your views on official twitter account of Conversation Club: eng.club_psu. The Conversation club is under the constant supervision and guidance of Ms. Noor Fathima Ibrahim and well- supported by the English Club committee.

Impact of Exercise on our body Department of English took special interest in organizing work shop on “Impact of Exercise on our body” with a sole aim to bring awareness for healthy lifestyle among the student and staff. Workshop was organized on 21st November 2017.Dr. RihaqYasin of Al Taawin Group clinic attended the workshop and shared her knowledge with us. The lecture was mainly about the effects of exercising on our lives, the wrong conception of dieting, chronic diseases food and diabetes. The workshop also highlighted that mere exercising will not solve the health problems; however this is a wrong conception among people. Exercising and eating healthy are parallel terms. Eating less is always good. This is the worst concept, or you can call it a myth according to Dr. Rihaq. She enlightened us with new information saying, "Every blood type has its own diet", so eating healthy, eating according to your doctor’s plan is always good. Chronic diseases have become very common now-a-days that's because of our eating habits. The lecture was very informative and students showed a lot of interest in the workshop by actively interacting with the Guest speaker. Many Faculty members also attended the work shop. A group of 25 girls assist in this workshop. There were four corners: 1- Introduction corner 2- Benefits of food corner 3- Marathon challenge corner 4- Sports corner These corners displayed information and exhibited foods

that help us stay healthy. The workshop was organized under the supervision and guidance of Ms. Burooj.

The English Coffee House Comedy Play: Sheridan’s The School for Scandal projected as English Coffee House 11NEWS LETTER VOLUME -1

“The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential...these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence”, Confucius. To begin with, seeking to implement the keen ideas that we put up with, we need to take strong determination and apply hard efforts to reach our goal. The implication above suggests the purpose to open the doors of excellence through constant endeavours. It is not possible to pursue our goals if we do not meet the requirements of our motif. It is not possible either, if everyone who joins their hands to make it possible, do not come in and collaborate to make things meet its end with a common goal to achieve success. This was a beautiful idea behind our working together to accomplish things with great progress. Basically, it was a literature- based activity; hence we preferred to take literature students so that they have a clear insight of the content and theme which truly enables them to exert their skill academically with all its potentials. Since its inception, the girls of level 5 from literature stream worked diligently on this mission to make things very special.

When the comedy play was chosen, and the roles of characters were assigned to the interested candidates, they started off to practice in terms of language, pronunciation and accent with right intonation of dialogues. We allotted designated roles based on the theatre requirements. Our supportive theatre community is as followed: director and narrator role performed by the same talented student, ShathaAlanazi who played multiple tasks starting from voice integration of all actors to the adaption of music and all its related stage task. The translators who translated the English version of play to Arabic were Haifa Ali and AmalAlmsaad. This was further reviewed by Ms. Burooj that gave us a great relief. Our actor- students: Sara Abdulazizaldaej, SafaAlanazi, BashairAlsheddi, Reem Alsaikhan, KhloodsaadAldossari, Faten Abdullah Aljarmah, DanaSaudAlahmed, Wa’adAbdul rahmanAlhuwaitan of English Department and a single student interested to join us from law department was Argwan Salem Almasoud. All these girls tirelessly practiced their roles as this was apparently reflecting through their performance on stage in terms of creating mood, acting, gestures with their pre-recorded voices based on different situations . Similarly, we did have the other teams like logistics, artistic production team, advertising and creative designers and co-ordinators on stage. We consistently worked on this project for 35 days as it helped us to yield a better result. Finally, due to our dedicated efforts and industrious work, we could achieve success with all the persistent faith and having positive energy around us.

REPORTS

At last, the most awaited grand day arrived where our students showcased their magnanimous performance on stage. To witnessing this great event, the English department staff and students were invited for the play as they are the unique holders and carriers of inspiration to our students. We had our guests of honour, the proud mothers of our actor- students who were pleased to watch the amazing play performed by them. We had huge audiences who enjoyed the play and applauded too. Most importantly, we felicitated the students for their excellent work as this act will surely harvest their future success. The journey ended with the beautiful remark made by the Head of the English Department, Dr. Fawziah Harshan who was greatly amazed by the students overall performance and exclaimed the reiterated words of Oscar Wilde, “The Play was a great success. and also worth noting it is that the encouragement and words of appreciation our students received from the teachers are highly commendable.

The Literature Gallery @ March, 2018

“Let him that would move the world, first move himself”, Socrates. The aforesaid implication suggests the aim of working laboriously in order to make a reformed society. Just aiming at the planned idea does not really mean accomplishing the goal, rather working along to achieve it is all that require for making differences in one’s world or the world ‘one’ live in. With these motivational words, we initiated a plan of Literature gallery and discussed with our students. We began to encourage our students to start working on the different genres of literature and inspiring them to look into the subject with an inquisitive knowledge and to identify the in-depth values that are found hidden in literature learning. Given the insights on literature and providing the realistic, adventurous and fictional approach, they started to bring their own findings with diverse theme that offered to look at life with different approaches. When the students were stimulated, they brought in their unique ideas that were relatively seen competitive to one another. Therefore, the literature exhibit was divided into British and American literature gallery so as to have the varied analysis of themes and conceptual development on literary writers and canons. Under each of the above domains, the interested students decided to work in teams and to emerge with success, these teams were further facilitated with volunteers who helped us in executing different tasks in a beautiful and well organised manner. The volunteers representing the British literature and American Literature gallery were Latifa Abdullah Alghasham and Ghadeer Shuja Aldossary respectively of level 8 who were asked to report every now and then to show the team’s progress. Eventually, we decided to give them the certificates for their specific tasks of volunteering which also gave them an added advantage to not just win certificates but also offered

them an opportunity to learn and sharpen different social skills through experience that would again help them in all future endeavours. On the day of Literature Gallery, the students were excited to showcase their talents in preparing their corners with charts, banners, portraits, ipads with creative films, pictures, designs, project displays and the most interested quotes depicting the valuable ideas that enormously brought the values of life and success. They further enhanced their research capability with all rigorous learning and enthusiasm that widely inspired the visitors with a different outlook on literature. The topics covered for corners with literary genres and themes were: Roald Dahl, Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Daniel Defoe, Emily Dickinson, Women in Literature: prominent women writers, World wars and prominent poets, Walt Whitman, Greek theatre, Book corner etc. Moreover, the girls were expressive enough to give their presentations relating to their research topics. In addition, few girls had a different approach of exhibiting their corner wearing masks and costumes to give the theatrical appearances this act was seen really interesting and awe- inspiring to the visitors. At last, it gives us a proud privilege to say that the Literature Gallery was remarkably a huge success and was applauded by the head of the department dear Dr. Fawziah Harshan, respected teachers and beloved students (visitors) for the hard efforts taken by the presenters of the gallery. Theatre Club Activities:@ March 2018 ‘Success reinforces success’ is the motive behind this theatre club, this is based on the previous term activity named Coffee House that brought a high scope of success and achievement to the English department. Keeping the strong urge and enthusiasm of our students in mind, in enacting different theatrical roles and performing skit for audiences; we became anxious in generating an inspiring idea to have the theatre club. ‘Nothing fancy just creativity’ is a catchword of our students. This especially targets on the creative talent of students that we were driven to establish this theatre club; that evoke their interest in acting delights and on stage performances. This baby step took a real leap forward when the students showed their keen attention in enacting different roles and playing voluntarily with just a boost of confidence and persuasions. Eventually, we decided to club the dual theatrical performances to be enacted on stage: one being, the dramatic monologues of different 19th century writers and the other being a famous Shakespeare’s play, ‘The Merchant of Venice’. Each of these was volunteered by the wonderful leaders: Wadha Abdullah Sulaiman and Jumana Mohammad Almaiman respectively. The tremendous dynamic role was played by the managing director, Wadha Abdullah the same leader of the acts of Dramatic monologues, who offered her active participation in the execution of the entire process from the making related tasks till the delivery of performances. Similarly, this process includes the task distribution to the fellow mates like: narrating, editing dialogues, voice merging, flier design, invitations, advertising and creative designing etc. The actors of dramatic monologues who performed a very unique style of speaking their mind, highly appealed to the strong emotions of the audience.

My Journey to Australia by HananMohamad Al Shahab Globalization affects many aspects of our life such as the way of communication, health, lifestyle, and education. In today’s world travelling by air makes reaching east to west, or north to south easy; I travelled to Australia for completing my Master degree. It took seventeen hours by plane to reach Melbourne, which is the most sort after destination in the world. As a Saudi female who is a conservative, the journey was not easy. Though, I faced many challenges in my trip, but this trip left its impression on my family, my personality, and my English language.

T

he effect of travelling to a western country on my family was clear from the very beginning of the trip. I noticed a great change in my husband and children; they all extended their support to me. We all worked as a unit, co-operating with each other in daily choirs. My husband and my four children were a pillar of support for me. All the family members participated to finish everyday’s duties. My husband learnt English language professionally for around five months at Swinburne University, and through communication with native speakers and English speakers from different nations. As Melbourne is a cosmopolitan city so we were exposed to different cultures through communicating with lovely people thus opening a vast horizon of culture, language, understanding etc in front of us. Furthermore, my children went to Australian public schools, where they learnt English and Japanese languages. They had great experience. They had many friends and lovely teachers who supported them in their studies for two years and a half. I found a great difference in the education imparted there like, their style of approach in dealing with the students etc.

R Rise Again

One fine afternoon in solitude I was wandering what makes me to go to beach as I never miss an opportunity visiting a beach, sitting there long hours I use to gaze deeply at the ocean stretching in front of me as far as I could see and the waves lashing at the shore again, again and yet again never tiring, never seizing to retire but every time with more and more determination until they reach the shore. I felt the waves as if they are calling me, whispering something in my ear. What was that whisper? What are they telling me? What’s that which makes me feel more determined once back from the beach as I was occupied with these thoughts suddenly it came to my mind that I go there to watch the waves.

If our lives can be compared with

oceans, then our spirits should not be less than waves. They may fall but only to rise again. No different are our aspirants in the field of education, who missed the prized cup once but are ready to fight and attempt again. There is no short cut to success. Very few are born with a silver spoon, rest all have to strive and struggle. The only way to ensure that the path you choose leads to success is with determination and perseverance. The old and hackneyed maxim “Hard work is the key to success” is only partially true. Hard work is to be accompanied with the golden touch of determination and perseverance.

by Ms. Sameena Banu

I lose myself in their advancing and retreating. I become one with them. My heart leaps out when I see them coming towards me. I realized. Oh! I go there why? Because, “I like the waves, not because they rise and fall, but because every time they fall, they rise again”.

The message was loud and clear. Life is like an ocean in which all rivers of joys and sorrows come together to become one magnanimous being.

So, one should be determined in his or her quest for success. Few people are famous, successful why? because they choose one field of action and dedicate themselves to it. In the same way students should have only one goal i.e. to do justice to the efforts put in by their teachers and parents to see them excel in the field of education. It does not mean to just study, as “All Work and no play makes jack a dull boy”. You have to be single-minded while you are studying. Stray thoughts should be avoided. Whatever you are doing at the moment, try to give it your hundred percent. That’s what the waves teach us.

They Need Us by Hanadi Falah S AlOsaimi

Losing the ability to speak is really hard on human beings, and the people surrounding them, what about those creatures who can only show you their need for kindness and caring, nothing else, but can't ask for it. Teaching generates future icons by Ms. Noor Fathima Ibrahim “Teachers, I believe, are the most responsible and important members of society because their professional efforts affect the fate of our earth”.Helen Caldecott Broadly speaking, teaching is basically referred to as a job, a career or profession but on its own it does not set to define only this notion; it surpasses its scope enormously. It reaches far beyond its dignified role and its expectations and hence no real limitations could be traced. The journey of a teacher is in fact a lifelong commitment where one surmounts not only in his or her area of learning but it induces all necessary resources that are often needed to be explored on so as to accomplish the new, current and ongoing nuances of teaching of any particular subject.

The unique service of rendering a quality time with the students lasts for a whole life time. It indulges not only in transferring the new ideology from the book world but also enhances the distinctive, learning challenges for students to face the future of tomorrow with all fortitude and determination. It is meant to impart knowledge and power besides instructing and directing. Moreover, it intends to guide the way, enlightened with optimistic spirit as promisingly imbibed by its quality.

24 NEWS LETTER VOULEM-1

From the outset, I chose to become a teacher because I found my teachers very inspiring and realistic. I started to dream about their role and was passionate to become one. The reasons are too many, to proclaim, it is their endeavour that made a big difference in my life. I was excited when i became a teacher, because most humorously i shall be heard by my students. They would feel my words catching and grasping besides ringing in their ears whenever they come across such similar ideas in their life. Undeniably, it is a matter of fact to consider a teacher based on the passion if she qualifies in inspiring her students. It is crucial to check the level of passion and the influence she creates on the subjects she takes. Why it is crucial because one can observe the success it generates on the level of performance among the students as it closely relates to their passion and enthusiasm criteria. As a result, it remarkably brings in a large difference and is found amazing with the student’s grades.

On the other hand, it is worth noting that the teachers being given the subjects out of their core interest, this does not mean that they remain unsuccessful in their efforts. The good and passionate teacher manages to find her way out by any possible means to make her subject as interesting and special she can. Consequently, she explores the valley of unnamed river to fetch the most possible water she can. Surprisingly she is somewhere out there, a diligent, recognized individual who deserve all appreciation for the efforts she make. Her passions take a beautiful turn leading to creativity. Therefore adapting new innovative wisdom and exploring the unexplored and reaching out to the best they can.

Teaching generates future icons There is a close correlation with the passion and commitment of teachers with their students in their teaching-learning process? It is well noted, that when passion stop, the commitment suffers unambiguously in a precise mode. The profound interests shown by teachers cultivate a deep impact in motivating students. The amount of loyalty and dedication shown on the teaching and learning part manifests a considerable level of progress among the students' performance. It is of crucial importance to penetrate on this issue. It cannot be right to say that the teacher has her influences only within the classroom. In fact, the impact she creates spreads largely beyond one’s expectations. Studying is not a change that takes place in their individual growth, it rather is physical and mental intervention that paves the way for the societal growth or it is an act to improve standard of the community at its most. For this aforesaid reason, the relationship with students is quite unique. It is perceived as dull, bitter and sometimes even nasty and tiresome at the most. The other brighter side if we consider, one can wonder what impression it sets to create in their minds, is just awe-inspiring and marvellous and its impact is deep and profound that teachers are hardly ever forgotten in the whole life time. My observations being a teacher... The students need to be recognized for their exquisite strengths and weaknesses equally. Having these qualities spotted, giving them a quality time instructing and counselling them attracting with the perks they would receive, is all that makes a huge difference in their behaviour. This gives them a chance to change the way they look and address their subjects. This attempt not only figures out on a nominal range but also helps unconditionally on a large scale to discover their overall development. In particular, most of the time, being teachers we notice the problem lies solely with the students not in the surrounded aspects of their studies. Despite knowing this fact, we fail to take any substantial measures. It is the other way round; there is somewhere something that actually bears to be answerable and responsible. The major factors that contribute in effecting result emerge from the students’ ability of grasping to learn under home atmosphere, their peer effects, then moving on with curricula of their subjects. It is more interesting when we recognise their skills and appreciate in a soft manner, considering the student’s work as unique, distinctive and special. Subsequently, the radiance one finds on them and their performance of task is highly unusual and reaches the horizons of adventures from where to return to the ground level is highly impossible. This apparently makes them an achieving student, a wonderful citizen.

GENERAL

Delving into this matter with some grave efforts, the idea got trickled from observations to throw some light on teaching-learning process. One needs to look into this matter, bit severely taking it into a consideration. Although, the students achievement decides on the different sources of variance that are basically dealt with; presenting and enhancing these variance is a matter of germinal development that needs to be looked, at the very initial stage of this process. While exploring this aspect, one gets to ascertain the influences it bears, that in a way, truly makes a large difference in the behaviour and performance of a student. One who makes variance is the one who make lot of differences. Yes, it is none but a teacher. The teacher always possesses the unusual and powerful qualities and whose greatest influence needs to be optimised so as to stimulate the exceptional effect on the learner. This takes a deep root to instil the right value of education, having the higher expectation level followed by the high quality teaching performance of a teacher. This enables students to meet appropriate challenges and would focus their attention on the meaningful learning process. From the experiences and observations, i would affirmatively say that using the sweet and warm words with the students turn out to work like magic. The words like when I say, ‘I totally believe in you and your talent’, this reverberates in their mind often checks themselves in recalling what they have been erring with, could possibly be their studies or the discipline related aspect. They tend to change themselves and try out to do the best they can.

Value Based Education: Planting Seeds of Good Character by DR.ShifanThaha Abdullateef In this age of globalization, where survival of the fittest has become the policy of the day, humanity at large has consciously or subconsciously entered into the rat race there by, compromising on values. With paucity in job markets, people try to get employment by hook or crook. Thus, many a time taking away the rightful share of others .Today we hear about “certificate racketeering” and “certificate factory” these phrases throw light on the degenerated educational systems across the globe. Another alarming issue is ‘malpractices in the exams.’ We sometimes adopt unethical means to achieve the end. For us the end justifies the means. We fail to understand that we cannot be treated on par with students who toil and succeed. We tend to forget the fact that success achieved through shortcut means is no achievement at all. Satisfaction and happiness are just momentary. When we are not discouraged or stopped, we find it an easy means to climb up the ladder eventually, getting habituated. Another issue is lack of peaceful co-existence. Unfortunately, due to our ego issues we start to underestimate a person, indulge in unhealthy competition, misguide others etc. Groups are formed based on competency level of the students, family lineage etc… we fail to understand that in diversity, lies the beauty. “None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” [SahihBukhari and Muslim] ‘Plagiarism’ or ‘stealing’, as a lay man would understand has become the fashion of the day. It is being considered as a skill rather than a stigma .It is the deadliest way to kill our creativity and handicap our analytical abilities. This is not makes the society stagnant not but also makes one lose his /her self esteem. 26 NEWS LETTER VOLUME -1

Mocking or bullying has become a way to pass our time. It is considered ‘a feast of the leisure hours.’ We derive pleasure from pin pointing the shortcomings of others and enjoy the sufferings of vulnerable people. We do not realize that by making fun of others we are trying to hide our own weaknesses. In fact, by doing this our weaknesses become more prominent. A goal oriented person has no time to look at the follies of others. “The best among you is the one who doesn’t harm others with his tongue and hands.” Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)— Back biting is synonymous with conversation .We consider it as form of sharing our thoughts and opinions but in true sense it is an act of cowardice. We talk behind others because we do not have the courage to speak out. Back biting is the sister of prejudice. This is very common in social circles where women are predominant. If we are positive minded and a true well wisher we would put forth our opinion and advice appropriately. "The Worst of our faults is our interest in other people’s Faults." --- Ali IbnAbiTalib

Value Based Education :Planting Seeds of Good Character “Once a teacher always a teacher.” Quite often it has been observed that we as students tend to forget or neglect the people who were instrumental in shaping our careers and moulding our lives. It is equivalent to being selfish. It is the human tendency to be acknowledged. A simple smile can mean a lot to the teachers. It can be a gesture to show appreciation and gratitude towards them. “Those who educate children well are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those the art of living well.” ― Aristotle

As I pen down the current issues, I ponder ask myself :Is there a requirement to preach when we are blessed and privileged with the best book on the principles of life i.e HOLY QURAN .Perhaps this is an attempt from my side to pave the way or introspection . “The greatest jihad (struggle/striving) is to battle your own soul, to fight the evil within yourself.” - Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

How to speak English like a native speaker by Muneera Al-qurnas

anguages can differ in many aspects not only at phonetics level but also in phonology rules. Acquiring sufficient knowledge of phonetics features and phonological rules of both Arabic and English could be a key factor for improving the pronunciation of Arabic learners of English There are English consonants that do not have equivalences in Arabic like /p/ and /v/ because Arabic has only /b/ /f/ most Arab learners tend to pronounce /p/ and /v/ using only sounds that exist in Arabic; for example, words like (very) might be pronounced with /f/ instead of /v/sound which creates incorrect pronunciation. In addition, / ŋ / sound does not occur in Arabic but it occurs as an allophone , so most of Arab add /g/ at the end of some words to pronouncing ,but actually it does not end with /g/ it is almost like elision in Arabic.

My journey in learning language by Manal Hamad Al-Mutery My efforts to learn to read, write and speak English have been significant challenge in my life. When I first came to United States from Saudi Arabia I was 12 years old, I could speak, read and write almost no English at all. Today, although I still have much to learn, and I struggle every day, I have made a good amount of progress. In fact, we came to the United States because of my mom and my sister, my mom wanted to work on her Master's degree. I was so proud that my mom could achieve her dream, and the fact that she had 7 kids, didn't stop her. She was a super hero for me.

My English wasn't that good; I knew few words from my mom that could help me, in case of trouble. When I was in Saudi Arabia I grew up watching Disney movies and kids program. This helped me in learning vocabulary, and also, how to use them.

The major factor that helped me to excel in English language was that, I lived in United States, New York. The way I was able to interact with people in everyday life enhanced my learning ability tremendously. At first there was no one to teach me so; I tried every possible way I could to learn English. One way that was very useful was listening to radio and watching TV, mostly news. I started listening attentively to people in my neighborhood, to their language, style and vocabulary to pick up the language as fast as I could but still, it was difficult. So, I picked up one word at a time, and looked up in the dictionary for the meaning. I would also try to write down the words and remember them. I made my goal of learning at least 20 new words every day. I tried to speak like the newscasters. After a while I made friends, and they were another way of learning English. I would ask them about the words I heard on TV and radio. I would also learn a lot just by spending time with them and listening to their talk. Good friends of mine were patient with me and helped me a lot. I was able to understand and speak in English. I was proud of learning the language on my own. I Later, faced few problems in writing skill and grammar. Therefore, I enrolled myself in English Language Institute, to understand the basics of English language, and how to interact with others clearly and confidently. 31 NEWS LETTER VOLUME -1

Analysis of The Id, Ego and SuperEgo in "The Story of An Hour" by Sana Meshaal Al Otaibi This essay is going to analyze the story of an hour written by Kate Chopin using Jung criticism in psychoanalysis. This paragraph is going to discuss the history of psychoanalysis. 33It NEWS was reported in ( LETTER VOLUME -1 Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoanalysis, 2017) that Psychoanalysis is a set of theories and therapeutic techniques related to the study of the unconscious mind, which together form a method of treatment for mental-health disorders. It was established in the early 1890s by Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud. He created this concept trying to find an effective treatment for patients with neurotic or hysterical symptoms. Psychoanalysis was developed in different ways by Freud’s students one of them is Carl Jung. Thus, this paragraph has discussed the history of psychoanalysis. This essay is going to discuss Carl Jung's theories on psychoanalysis. Carl Jung applied Freud ideas on psychoanalysis but he build on them by his own theories. He is the one who provided the concept of the collective unconscious which means one unconscious that is relevant to each and every person and the way to access it is the archetypes. According to Jung, psychoanalysis deals with three aspects which are personal conscious, personal unconscious and collective unconscious. Personal conscious when a person is aware of his behaviour, and in this story Mrs.Mallard didn't show her happiness of her husband's death in front of the people, so she is aware of her behaviour. Personal unconscious is divided into three parts which are id, superego and ego. The id mean our desires , it's when Louise says "free free free" this is free association which means that she talks without thinking about her talks, so her id is to be free. The superego means perfect form of morality it is to be good wife and moral, who should be sad over her husband's death. While the ego is the filter it is when her sister knocked at the door she shifts from being happy to sad, she did that to be accepted by the society. Collective unconscious means one unconscious that is relevant to each and every person. For example, archetypes structure can be found in everywhere and have the same idea. In this story, it talks about two things, of archetype persona and female figure persona when she shows others that she is sad about her husband's death while she is happy. She shows her sadness because it is expected that women should be sad and crying over their husband's death. Thus, this essay analyzes “The Story of An Hour” written by Kate Chopin using Jung criticism in psychoanalysis.

I wish I didn't force him to go to that stupid contest. Had he not gone, we would have a great life, a great future, where there is no one else. Just me & my husband John and of course our son Jake .‌ 4 years had passed after John's death, I tried my best to give Jake everything he ever wanted and not making him feel that he grew up without a father . I become overprotective about him, no parties, no hanging out with his friends; I made him stay at home fearing something bad would happen to him.
