DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
Hello. My name is Mashika, and I like to tell stories.
My approach to design is predicated on the idea that design is a puzzle, and together, all of its pieces tell a story. I value interior design as the instrument I use to narrate these stories. My job is to arrange the pieces of a space in which to give it a voice, to teach it to speak in terms of elements of design and principles of organization, to graphically compose anecdotes of feeling inherent to its location, to seek out its true character, to capture the pure essence of its inhabitants, and to aesthetically set the stage for the daily work to be assembled.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The color white, symbolizing knowledge and light, will be used prominently throughout the property in furniture, fixtures, finishes, art and architecture. Varying tones of taupe and gray will be layered with white to create a warm and polished monochromatic palette as well as set a framework for the state-of-the-art light fixtures used throughout the property. Textures will be reminiscent of early and antiquated processes, and obsolete technology will be upcycled as feature art. The computer mother board will serve as the hotel’s major design insluence and will be evident in lighting, carpet, and decorative applications. The design will embrace native Texan materials, such as rustic limestone and polished granite to establish a cultural context to Austin while art and secondary colors which reference Austin will further establish a sense of place. Techotel- The Conference Center will be a modern extension of an Austenite tradition in the pioneering spirit.

DESIGN STORY: An Urban Treehouse
AutoCAD, Photoshop, Hand drafting, sketching
“In all things harmony”- author unknown The O’Neill Residence, home to a family of four, will be designed to function as a retreat within the city. Located in the creative epicenter of Wicker Park, the townhouse is convenient to each family member’s professional or scholastic, and personal obligations, but does not provide the visual appeal desired. Inspired by treehouses, the secret safe havens of childhood, the solution will be to employ concepts which will embody the harmony of nature and the industrial aesthetic of Chicago. The goal will be to establish a cozy city oasis which is a relaxing escape from the hectic world the family experiences.

The design will show restraint and moderation through subtlety, economy of materials and repetitious design elements. An integration of building materials with local, natural, sustainable, and recycled materials will display the union between the built and natural environments. Minimal furniture with clean lines and storage options will encourage order. Asymmetrical furniture arrangements will help to create the feeling of spontaneity found in nature, and industrial and natural finishes and colors will provide textural context to the “treehouse in the city” reference. Leafy plants and simple artwork will further highlight the juxtaposition between the beauty of industry and nature within the home, while low lighting levels will add ambiance to design choices as well as the overall design. For a family who seeks to recharge and relax, the design, customized with the specific needs and interests of the O’Neill’s in mind, will offer a harmonious respite and connection to nature in an increasingly urban world.

Inspired by the honeycomb of the bee, the design will connect qualities of the hexagon structure such as strength, efficiency, artistry, and communication with the firm’s culture. The hexagon will diagram the space by shaping the offices, work station configurations, and pathways and will be repeated in ceiling, wall, and flooring materials. Furniture and finishes in a fresh color palette of periwinkle blue, bright lime, orchid, deep purple- violet, and white will keep the space interesting for visitors and employees while helping to delineate different types of work zones. Playful lighting will provide a contrast to the geometrical shapes and illuminate the design.

5 . R E TA I l Tesla Motors Inc., Retail Showroom, Mall of Georgia, Buford, GA Revit, Photoshop, Hand sketching DESIGN STORY Inspired by its revolutionary namesake, Tesla Motors, Inc., is once again shifting the paradigm by providing consumers an, informal, interactive, and individual experience in their high- traffic and high-end retail locations. The company will be able to engage with and educate potential customers on electric cars and the Tesla brand in a friendly and less aggressive environment than that of the traditional car dealer. To capitalize on this idea, the store’s design is broadly based on Nikola Tesla’s plasma path which at times mimics that of a winding road. Such imagery will inspire the curvilinear paths which will guide shoppers through the Tesla retail experience.

DESIGN STATEMENT Through manipulation of the beautiful and flowing forms inspired by ancient Chinese martial arts, an aesthetic will be established which will embrace its practices of meditation, technique, and energy. Representation of these practices will be evident in the overall plan. Circulation will be optimized in an open plan which will allow the space to visually and metaphorically breathe. Furniture selection and placement will create zones in the shapes of forms and material selections will project strength and vitality. The restaurant will seat 200 patrons within 5000 square feet, and will have, as its focal point, a center bar. Primary seating will be in the family style, but various seating options, including booth dining and 2 person dining, will accommodate different sized parties. The ceiling design, utilizing LED cove lighting will replicate the organic forms below. Additionally, lighting at layered levels will add to the sensory experience while an energetic color palette of red balanced by golden wood tones will help establish the family- friendly mood. Tri- Corp Enterprise, Inc., Washington D.C. AutoCAD, 3dsMax, Photoshop, Illustrator, Hand sketching DESIGN CHALLENGE The intention will be to synergistically combine the non- profit organization Musical Dreams with the corporations Univeresal Music Group and the Natural Music History Museum. The design will encourage connections between all organization, while creating three unique spaces which feel cohesive yet retain their independent identities.

Throughout, the distinctive lines of rocks, paper, and scissors will both unite the individual organization missions and translate their shared passion for music into interior architectural forms.
