the gardening can have a positive effect on the community of orvieto. opening up produce stands for the community to buy the fruits and vegetable, this would create an income of money for the monks. further reinstating orvieto’s ways for promoting noncorporate businesses.

the prehistoric soil is perfect for growing olives, as it contains deposits of marine clay and the volcanic rich ash. it is said that Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane before his crucifixion. The garden of Gethsemane is owned by Franciscans that tend and care for the ancient olive trees which reside there. therefore growing olive trees would make the monks in the monastery feel connected to god.

the refectory is a place of rest, nourishment and replenishment of oneself. refectory is derived from late latin word refectorium, meaning ‘a place one goes to be restored’ during restoration one is exposed and vulnerable. In ‘The Guardian Angel’ by henri de- caisne a sick child is being looked over by an angel as the mother struggles to keep watch. the translucent balcony walkway on the ceiling of the refectory will give the effect of angels walking past them above them while they eat and rest in the refectory.
the idea came from the proximity of the building to one another, which provides shading for pedestrians from the warm italian sun
