Els Arrernte són un poble aborigen del centre-nord d’Austràlia que es troba a l’entorn de la serralada MacDonnell, consideren que viuen en aquest lloc des de fa quaranta mil anys, en què van sorgir del Temps del Somni. El Somni o Altjeringa (també anomenat Temps del Somni) és un temps més enllà del temps en el qual els Éssers totèmics Espirituals ancestrals van formar la Creació. El somiar estableix l’estructura de les regles de societat per al comportament social i les cerimònies realitzades per assegurar la continuïtat de la vida i la terra.
