A Monthly Newsletter by Masjid Bani Hashim, Jumeirah Islands, Dubai Issue #26 Jan And if the people of the towns had believed and had the Taqwâ (piety), certainly, We should have opened for them blessings from the heaven and the earth, but they belied (the Messengers). So We took them (with punishment) for what they used to earn (polytheism and crimes). The incredible concept of Barakah (abundance) These are the times of greed! If you are working in the corporate world or in any other, where money is the key concern, then let’s have a look at this disease that most of us are struggling with, which is greed. The more we have, the more we want. SubhanAllah, nothing is enough! Worst of all, this disease leads to ungratefulness as you are never satisfied. If this is not enough, competition is so prevalent amongst us and this competition is not the one for doing good deeds, this competition is the one for attaining more power, more money, and more influential position. SubhanAllah. Enough is enough! Let’s go back to the Book of Allah سبحانه و تعالى, a concept that we see again and again emphasized by Allah سبحانه و تعالىis the concept of barakah. One beautiful definition that I learnt from a dear teacher is that barakah is what makes the little more and what makes more beneficial. SubhanAllah. In a nutshell, barakah are the Divine blessings in what you have if Allah is pleased with you. Subhanal Allah, so in shaa Allah let’s make a turning point here and now, that from now on in this mad rush of this world, we will ask Allah سبحانه و تعالىnot only to increase us in good but increase us with barakah so that this increase is beneficial and if we feel that we do not have enough or what we are earning is not a big amount, we ask Allah سبحانه و تعالىto stretch it with His barakah. Alhamdulil Allah. Islam is not only a religion of inspiration, it is a religion of action also. While we ask Allah سبحانه و تعالىfor barakah, we have to do what Allah سبحانه و تعالىwants us to do to obtain this barakah. In the above ayah of the Qur’an, Allah سبحانه و تعالىinvites us to have faith and taqwa that will not only lead to barakah (singular), it will lead to barakat (plural) from the heavens and the earth. So we ask Allah سبحانه و تعالىto increase us in eman and we may understand and apply our eman in our thoughts and behavior in the right way and may Allah bestow on us taqwa in everything we do. Ameen ya Rabb al alameen. Alhamdulil Allah Rabb al alameen Wa salato wa salamo ala Rasulil Allah

NAMES OF ALLAH (SWT): An Noor Allah An Noor – ()اهلل النور Sheikh As Sa’ady (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Noor of Allah (SWT) is of two types: Tangible: His (SWT) Veil is Light, and if He (SWT) were to remove it, the glory of His (SWT) Face would burn everything of His (SWT) creation, as far as His (SWT) gaze reaches. This type of light cannot even be elaborated on further. Other lights include all the lights in the upper heavens which are all from His (SWT) Noor. Paradise is lit with His (SWT) Noor, and the Light of the Throne and Kursi are greater than the lights of the sun, moon, and planets. Intangible: This is the Noor that lights the hearts of His (SWT) messengers, chosen ones, awliya and angels. The lights of knowing Him (SWT) and loving Him (SWT) are in the hearts of His (SWT) believing slaves but the amount of ‘light’ is according to how much they know Him (SWT) and magnify Him (SWT). It’s according to how much they believe in the beauty of His (SWT) names and attributes, because each name and attribute has an impact on their hearts. When the light of Allah (SWT) reaches the heart of a believer and it becomes lit with belief in Allah (swt), knowing Him, loving Him, and remembering Him, then this heart will be beating with life. Allah (swt) says in Surah Al An’am 122: (Is he who was dead (without Faith by ignorance and disbelief) and We gave him life (by knowledge and Faith) and set for him a light (of Belief) whereby he can walk amongst men— like him who is in the darkness (of disbelief, polytheism and hypocrisy) from which he can never come out?) The Light of Allah (SWT) in the heart of the slave is the fitra he is born with, compared to the pure olive oil in the ‘parable of light’. So his fitra is pure, ready to learn divine knowledge and act upon it. When knowledge and faith reaches him, then the light in his heart is lit, similar to when the light is lit up in the lamp. 3
His heart becomes full of light, and the purer the heart, the purer the glass will be, beaming with light. So the light of the fitra is combined with light of faith and the light of knowledge and purity – this is all noor upon noor – light upon light. If the heart is emptied from the light of faith, then it dies. Similarly, if the lights of the heavens and the earth are removed then mankind would die. We are in need of the lights of the earth and the heavens in order to survive on this earth, and these lights are all from Noor Allah (swt). And the heart of mankind is in need of Noor Allah (swt), which is the light of faith, in order to survive. Allah (swt) is Al Hadi and He sends this light to the hearts of His believing slaves. And this light comes in the form of revelation – the Quran is noor and the Sunnah is noor, as Allah (swt) says in Surah At Taghabun 8: (ۚ ِى أ َنزَ ۡلنَا ٓ َسولِهِۦ وَٱلنُّو ِر ٱ َّلذ ُ )فَـَٔا ِمنُوا ْ بِٱهللَِّ َور (Therefore, believe in Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), and in the Light (this Qur'ân) which We have sent down). – If Allah (SWT) called His deen and the revelation light, then the Muslim should know that his share from this light is according to how much he follows this revelation – meaning how much he acts upon the Quran and Sunnah.
When this light becomes stronger it will even show on the surface of the person’s face. You will find some faces beaming with light, so what is it? It’s the light of faith, Ibn ‘Abbas (ra) said: & ونورا في القلب،'إن للحسنة ضياء في الوجه (The good deeds have a brightness in the face and light in the heart) This light will not happen without persistence on obedience and worship so that the light of faith becomes stronger in the heart. And this light will appear in his life and after death. The light that’s in your heart O believer is the light that will be on the Sirat, so you will cross the Sirat with this light. The deen is noor, His speech is noor, the faith in the hearts of the believers is noor, and this noor will flow on their tongues and show in their faces. And Allah (swt) will perfect this light for them on the Day of Judgement. (Their Light will run forward before them and (with their Records — Books of deeds) in their right hands They will say: "Our Lord! Keep perfect our Light for us [and do not put it off till we cross over the Sirât and grant us forgiveness. Verily, You are Able to do all things) May Allah (swt) fill our hearts with His light. Ameen.
(Allâh guides to His Light whom He wills) – the light of faith in the hearts of the believers changes according to how much they draw near to Allah (swt). Again the friend agreed that between the wounds farthest apart the space was less than a hand's span. Khalid (RA) showed him various parts of his body, and the friend was surprised to see that there was not a single part of his body which had not been touched by the effects of war, and he wondered how a man wounded in so many places could survive. Khalid (RA) said ruefully,"Do you not see? I have sought martyrdom in a hundred battles. Why could I not have died in battle?" "You could not die in battle", replied the friend. My journey into Surah Maryam, part 5 Part 5 of my learning from the Tafsir of Surah Maryam delivered by a dear teacher during the last 10 days of Ramadan. We finished last issue at ayah 58. This issue, In Sha Allah we will cover until ayah 67. These are very powerful verses and leave us with strong messages around the importance of Salah and its impact on our lives. It also reflects on the significance of taqwa and belief in the resurrection.
Now there hath succeeded them a later generation whom have ruined worship and have followed lusts. But they will meet deception. (59) You have to pass the test of Salah on the Day of Qiyamah. Those who believe, they pray with consciousness of Allah سبحانه و تعالى, they have focus, their hearts are settled and in tranquil. When they bow, they glorify Allah سبحانه و تعالى. It is very important to pray with as much concentration and humbleness towards Allah سبحانه و تعالىas possible. It is the salah, when performed in the best of the manners will save us from immorality. Our heart needs to do sajdah to Allah سبحانه و تعالى. When you stand in front of Allah Allah removes the hijab between you and Allah سبحانه و تعالى. Remember to do a lot of istighfar to make up for all the mistakes in salah. As we go down into rukuh and sajdah, our sins fall off our shoulders. Talk and converse with Allah سبحانه و تعالىin salah. You are so close to Allah during salah that nothing should come between you and Allah سبحانه و تعالى, not even another thought. 9
Save him who shall repent and believe and do right. Such will enter the Garden, and they will not be wronged in aught - (60) If you missed the commanded salah or did not perform as you should, then you have to realize your shortcoming and repent, believe and do righteous deeds. Faith and actions go hand in hand.
Gardens of Eden, which the Beneficent hath promised to His slaves in the unseen. Lo! His promise is ever sure of fulfillment - (61) They hear therein no idle talk, but only Peace; and therein they have food for morn and evening. (62) Such is the Garden which We cause the devout among Our bondmen to inherit. (63) We (angels) come not down save by commandment of thy Lord. Unto Him belongeth all that is before us and all that is behind us and all that is between those two, and thy Lord was never forgetful - (64) The above will be a means for you to attain Jannah. Hence, never be disheartened, do tauba, do not do shirk, do not leave doing good deeds. We have to be humble while we are in dunya and in shaa Allah سبحانه و تعالىwe will attain Jannah. In Jannah, there will be peace. Muminoon believe in the ghaib and the Qur'an is a guidance for those who believe in ghaib. Every Muminoon or kaafir has a place in Jannah and has a place in hellfire. In Surah Al Muminoon, Allah سبحانه و تعالىdescribes the Muminoon as those who turn away from ill speech, who give zakah and they avoid zinah, they do not come near it. Muminoon are always fearful, they are living in love, fear and hope of Allah سبحانه و تعالى. They keep track of their Salat. Salat is for everybody, it unites us. These are the ones who will inherit Firdaus al ala - garden for those who have taqwa. Allah سبحانه و تعالىnever forgets and does not do injustice. Do not underestimate the rehma of Allah سبحانه و تعالى. 10

The believer sees all the time akhirah - the dunya is a path through towards akhirah.

The woman is awrah, so when she goes out, the shaitan seeks to tempt her. She is closest to the Face of Allah when she remains in her home. The shaitan beau<fies the woman, which is one of the reasons Allah سبحانه تعالىprescribed the hijab for women. Women have an effect on men, they can change their minds. Women are also very important in society; they are the base of society, its founda<on. If a woman is righteous, she reforms the whole society.
Yusuf عليه السالمsuggested a solu<on to the problem straight away, to be sent to a par<cular prison. When you look back at his story, you realize Yusuf عليه السالمalways gets imprisoned in <ght places: the well, the house of the Aziz, which was essen<ally a prison, because he was a slave; and now the actual prison. Some<mes darknesses and difficult situa<ons in life are a way to eleva<on. If you are pa<ent, these <ght situa<ons become a bridge to salva<on. To ask Allah سبحانه و تعالىfor help is a shortcut. Yusuf عليه السالمwas finding it difficult to ignore the invita<ons of ( فاحشةimmorality) and adultery. He preferred going to prison to preserve his innocence and to obey Allah سبحانه و تعالىby keeping away from forbidden acts. 12
Sinning is temporary pleasure with an eternal torment. If you sin and die in that state without repen<ng, you will be punished. To insist on sinning, giving yourself excuses, is in itself a sin. Imagine the sin of disobeying الرّحمٰ ن, who only wants good for you. For اإلعتصام, you need to know Allah سبحانه وتعالى, believe in Him, rely on Him, love Him. Yusuf عليه السالمwas a prophet, and he s<ll did not feel self-sufficient. He knew he could not abstain from sinning without the help of Allah سبحانه و تعالى. When making dua, show your helplessness to Allah سبحانه و تعالى. When you see a sinner, don't feel secure. If you are arrogant, you will be put in the same situa<on as a test. Don't rely on your knowledge to save you. The women of the city ploAed against Yusuf عليه السالم for enjoyment. But for Yusuf عليه السالم, it was equivalent to death, because they were temp<ng him to disobey Allah سبحانه تعالى. He preferred imprisonment to giving in to tempta<on. And if You do not avert from me their plot The word { } َعن ِّيis actually ني+ عن. {}عن It is from the حروف معنوية, connectors rich with meaning. This one word gives a whole picture. Imagine a horse race, with hurdles, or حواجز, on the way. To jump over them, sailing over them, without even touching these obstacles, is called املجاوزة, which is what the word { } عن portrays. The women were approaching Yusuf عليه السالم, their plot being the hurdle, and he was running from the plot, as if it is tangible, and he jumps over it. Yusuf عليه السالم did not want to face the ladies, nor say anything to them. He wanted Allah سبحانه و تعالىto avert their plot from him, with no harm done. He did not want their plot
to touch him or affect his heart. He knew he would not sin physically, but was worried about his heart inclining towards the sin. The believer is always worried about his heart, the ْقلب, which can easily change ( َ) َقلَّب. I might incline towards them I might incline : ُأصب ْ Verb : صبا This word has diverse meanings in the dic<onary - youth - incline with enjoyment - longing - pour All these meanings are included here; Yusuf عليه السالم might act like a youth, pining for the object of his desire, incline toward the sin, long for it, and its desire might be poured into his heart. one of the levels of love as discussed earlier, : الصبابة ّ .when the love for the beloved is poured into the hear Yusuf عليه السالمwas worried that he might not be able to control his feelings. He did not want his heart attached to any one but Allah سبحانه و تعالى. Allah سبحانه و تعالىknows the weaknesses of His crea<on, so He gives us solu<ons. Emo<ons must be controlled to reform the body else it leads to chaos in society. Your eternal life depends on your heart, so you have no choice but to train it. Your heart must be أصبُ إلى اهلل. And be of the ignorant The more you learn about Allah سبحانه و تعالى, the clearer things become. When you do not know about Allah سبحانه و تعالى, you think in abstract terms; when you learn about Allah سبحانه و تعالى, you recognize His ac<ons all around you. 13
The word { } الجاهلنيis used here because a person who does not know will think nothing wrong about pouring his emo<ons, be it love, anger, or desire. Temporary delight can lead to eternal torment. And he who fears standing before his Lord and con trols his soul, from inclining to its desire. So verily Paradise will be his abode. 79:40-41 Judging with the mind and following desires leads to destruc<on. We need Divine rules together with our heart and intellect. So his Lord responded to him, so He averted from him their plot. Indeed He is the All Seeing, the All Knower. So his Lord responded to him The response of Allah ;سبحانه و تعالىwhen your heart and tongue call Him, He responds to you. This is a beau<ful rela<on, the first step must come from you. If you want Allah سبحانه و تعالىto remember you, check how much you remember Him. To see your posi<on with Allah سبحانه و تعالى, see where He places you. Don't invoke Him only in <mes of need, call Him all the <me; Allah سبحانه و تعالىloves to hear your voice. You cannot abstain from a sin with our own power, ask Allah سبحانه و تعالىto help you. You need the help of Allah سبحانه و تعالىalso when you intend to do good deeds. In this surah, the name of Allah, الرّبis men<oned several <mes, because throughout the whole surah, Yusuf عليه السالمgoes through nurturing and reforming.
So He averted from him their plot Allah سيحانه و تعالىsaved Yusuf عليه السالم, his heart was not affected. This response was exactly what Yusuf عليه السالمasked for. Indeed He is the All Seeing, the All Knower The special hearing of Allah سبحانه و تعالى, is for the believers; He hears their supplica<ons and responds to them. Make a supplica<on to Allah سبحانه و تعالىwith the certainty that Allah سبحانه و تعالىis hearing and responding. Don't make the response your concern, that is guaranteed when you are made to make the supplica<on. Make the supplica<on itself your concern. Make your dua an enjoyment. Allah سبحانه و تعالىmay grant you what you ask immediately, or later, or in a different form, or not at all, while giving you the ajar, according to His wisdom. Some<mes you want to make a dua and cannot; this is not in your control. : العليم Allah سبحانه و تعالىknows your heart, and responds according to it.

SAYED AL KHATEER Thought ()الخاطرة: Excessive love is a sickness for those who are idle It is an excessive type of love that it overcomes the person and takes over his mind, this is actually a sickness. In Islam, the concept of love is balanced. There is natural love – to love your parents, spouse, children, etc. But to hate or to love excessively is a sickness. Anyone who is excessively in love will just think about the other person that they will not be able to live their life – it becomes a waste. Worship is based on love – you need to love Allah (swt), you will not taste the sweetness of faith unless you love Allah (swt) and His Messenger (pbuh) the most. So imagine love can take you to paradise but excessive love can make you miserable. You can see the effect on the person – mentally, physically, and in his heart. I was looking at what the wise ones said about excessive love, its reasons and remedies. Then something amazing crossed my mind. Excessive love only conquers and establishes itself in hearts that are inac<ve and goalless. Meaning they are idle and they have no goals in life, they are not busy with anything. As for people of high determina<on, those who have goals and want to achieve, then they are not afflicted with this sickness. Why? Because they have higher goals. The nature of those with high determina<on, whose goal is Allah (swt) and firdaous, then their nature is elevated and does not stop for a person. You do not stand at anyone’s door and be aAached to anyone except Allah (swt). Excessive love is actually shirk because their world revolves around that person - you love them more than you love Allah (swt), you sacrifice more for them than for Allah (swt). It becomes an obsession that they don’t even want others to be around that person, subhan Allah. And the reason behind their eleva<on (those of high goals – of the face of Allah (swt) and firdaous) is because they think about the faults of the person. So this is a safeguard for excessive, obsessive love – when you see the faults of the people, such as they will die one day, they fall sick, they can get impa<ent, etc, you will not be obsessed about them. Don’t go to hate either, you need to be balanced – that’s why Islam teaches us to be moderate. Don’t hate excessively and don’t love excessively either. And they are seeking what is important and what is more important than Allah (swt)? Our feelings can take us forward or backwards – but when you are loving for Allah (swt), then this will elevate you. It will give you the mo<va<on to move forward towards Allah (swt). Live your life for Allah (swt). May Allah (swt) love you. Ameen. 15

Be Blessed Live a Fragranced Life #3
اعمل أعمال املباركني do good deeds In order to be مباركني, you must do مباركacts. These
Regarding the nurturing of Allah سبحانه و تعالى, the people are divided into two kinds:
are all righteous good deeds done with ikhlaas or sincerity, purely for the sake of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.
Those with insight; they recognize the nurturing of Allah, accept it, and benefit from it. : أعمى blind; they interpret the nurturing situation incorrectly. They do not see the actions of Allah سبحانه و تعالى. This ruins their faith. This is the actual blindness, not to be able to see the truth, which Allah سبحانه و تعالىshows you clearly. The symptoms whereby you recognize that you are being nurtured is a pain in the heart. When you are physically unwell, and go to the doctor, he examines you by touching and pressing the body. That is how the origin of the pain is discovered. In the same way, the heart needs to be pressed and squeezed for you to know its sickness. This squeezing is by the nurturing of Allah سبحانه و تعالى. The one who closes his eyes to this pain does not benefit from the nurturing of Allah سبحانه و تعالى. He will try to distract himself from the pain by doing other activities, such as physical, exercise, shopping, watching a movie. Instead of all this waste of time, you should flee to Allah سبحانه و تعالى, and ask Him for help. You must be very observant of your feelings and reactions. املبارك يحافظ على توحيد ِ ه the blessed one protects his tawheed
When you are doing good deeds, you are not sinning. But thoughts can spoil these deeds. For instance, you are sitting in class and learning, when thoughts of pride come to your mind, that you are there while others are sleeping. Or you are praying, and the thought or showing off comes, that if someone saw you they would be impressed. There must be checkpoints at each deed. You must purify the deed and make it only for the sake of Allah سبحانه و تعالى. A man stood and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Indeed my praise (of others) is worthwhile and my censure is appropriate.' So the Prophet صلى اهلل عليه و سلمsaid: 'That is for Allah, the Mighty and Sublime.'" َني قَال ٌ ْ ش َ ن ذَمِّي َّ ِن حَ مْ دِي زَيْ ٌن َو إ َّ َِسولَ اهللَِّ إ ُ فَقَا َم رَجُ لٌ فَقَالَ يَا ر َاك اهللَُّ تَعَالَى َ ذ: لنَّ ِبيُّ صلى اهلل عليه وسلم ٣٥٧٧ # حديث، ٤٧ # كتاب، جامع الترمذي This hadith is a foundation for ikhlaas or sincerity. The praise of Allah سبحانه وتعالىis the best; it will continue even after you die. The praise of people is just words. When you do good deeds, it is human nature to want praise. You must suppress this feeling, telling yourself that human praise or dispraise cannot harm or benefit you. Ikhlaas is a very high level; it requires hard work, and the reward is also great. Do not feel confident after performing a good deed. Always be humble; struggle and long for the praise of Allah سبحانه و تعالى.
The one who is mubarak is attached to the mercy of Allah
When you do a good deed, you feel happy. Analyze this happiness : why are you happy? Shaitan will 21
come to reassure you, whispering that you are happy because Allah سبحانه وتعالىis pleased with you. Don't award yourself full marks immediately. It was said to Allah's Messenger What is your opinion about the person who has done good deeds and the people praise him? He said: It is glad tidings for a believer. You must feel happy because happiness due to these reasons is rewarded. : Allah سبحانه وتعالىmade the deed easy for you. Occupied your time with worship. Gave you the power to perform the deed. Bestowed the faith upon you. Put the love of worship and obedience in your heart. When you do a righteous deed with ikhlaas, there are results. With these results comes another test. We go from test to test, until death. Do not feel happy and pleased with yourself, be grateful and pleased only with Allah سبحانه وتعالى. This is a blessing from Allah سبحانه وتعالى. We don't deserve anything, it is the mercy of Allah سبحانه وتعالىthat He blesses us. This will lower your ego. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him. 53:32 At the same time, do not humiliate yourself in front of people. Don't expose your sins to anyone. There are two conditions for the acceptance of good deeds : sincerity : اإلخالص following the sunnah : اإلتباع سنة
Innovations or بدعةis not mubarak, even though it is a lot. Sheikh As-Sa'adi said that the people of innovation with great deeds will be preceded by the people of sunnah, even though their deeds will be less. The Messenger of Allah صلى اهلل عليه و سلمis the إمام املباركني, the head of the blessed people. All the Muslimeen make dua for barakah for him, when they send blessings upon him. The reward for mubarak deeds is in this world and the hereafter. The Messenger of Allah صلى اهلل عليه و سلمsaid : وما. Allah the Exalted has said: 'I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine. And the most beloved thing with which My slave comes nearer to Me is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (prayer or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory) till I love him. When I love him I become his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks (something) from Me, I give him, and if he asks My Protection (refuge), I protect him". The mubarak ears are different from others, they hear only what pleased Allah سبحانه وتعالى, and increases his faith. The mubarak eyes will only see the actions of Allah. He will see only the mercy and kindness of Allah سبحانه وتعالى. The mubarak hands will only do good actions. Whatever he does will be blessed. The mubarak feet will only go to places of 22
goodness; he will be prevented from going to evil places.

Anas RA reported Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying: Never does a Muslim plant trees or cultivate land and birds or a man or a beast eat out of them but that is a charity on his behalf. (Muslim - Book 10, Hadith 3769)

WHAT IS NOT TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS What is Taught: No improvement had been made in the astronomy of the ancients regarding the motion of planets until the 13th century. Then Alphonso the Wise of Castile (Middle Spain) invented the Aphonsine Tables, which were more accurate than Ptolemy's. What Should be Taught: Muslim astronomers made numerous improvements upon Ptolemy's findings as early as the 9th century. They were the first astronomers to dispute his archaic ideas. In their critic of the Greeks, they synthesized proof that the sun is the center of the solar system and that the orbits of the earth and other planets might be elliptical. They produced hundreds of highly accurate astronomical tables and star charts. Many of their calculations are so precise that they are regarded as contemporary. The Alphonsine Tables are little more than copies of works on astronomy transmitted to Europe via Islamic Spain, i.e. the Toledo Tables.
What is Taught: The English scholar Roger Bacon (d. 1292) first mentioned glass lenses for improving vision. At nearly the same time, eyeglasses could be found in use both in China and Europe. What Should be Taught: Ibn Firnas of Islamic Spain invented eyeglasses during the 9th century, and they were manufactured and sold throughout Spain for over two centuries. Any mention of eyeglasses by Roger Bacon was simply a regurgitation of the work of al-Haytham (d. 1039), whose research Bacon frequently referred to.
What is Taught: Gunpowder was developed in the Western world as a result of Roger Bacon's work in 1242. The first usage of gunpowder 25 in
weapons was when the Chinese fired it from bamboo shoots in an attempt to frighten Mongol conquerors. They produced it by adding sulfur and charcoal to saltpeter. What Should be Taught: The Chinese developed saltpeter for use in fireworks and knew of no tactical military use for gunpowder, nor did they invent its formula. Research by Reinuad and Fave have clearly shown that gunpowder was formulated initially by Muslim chemists. Further, these historians claim that the Muslims developed the first firearms. Notably, Muslim armies used grenades and other weapons in their defence of Algericus against the Franks during the 14th century. Jean Mathes indicates that the Muslim rulers had stock-piles of grenades, rifles, crude cannons, incendiary devices, sulfur bombs and pistols decades before such devices were used in Europe. The first mention of a cannon was in an Arabic text dated 1300 A.D. Roger Bacon learned of the formula for gunpowder from Latin translations of Arabic books. He brought forth nothing original in this regard.
What is Taught: The compass was invented by the Chinese who may have been the first to use it for navigational purposes sometime between 1000 and 1100 A.D. The earliest reference to its use in navigation was by the Englishman, Alexander Neckam (1157-1217). What Should be Taught: Muslim geographers and navigators learned of the magnetic needle, possibly from the Chinese, and were the first to use magnetic needles in navigation. They invented the compass and passed the knowledge of its use in navigation to the West. European navigators relied on Muslim pilots and their instruments when exploring unknown territories. Gustav Le Bon claims that the magnetic needle and compass were entirely invented by the Muslims and that the Chinese had little to do with it. Neckam, as well as the Chinese, probably learned of it from Muslim traders. It is noteworthy that the Chinese improved their navigational expertise after they began interacting with the Muslims during the 8th century. 26

*Food for Thought ~ Not for Stomachs* Abû Al-Dardâ`~ [Allâh be pleased with him] ~used to say: “Learn knowledge before it is taken away, and it is taken away by its people [scholars] being taken away. The scholar and the student are partners in good and there is no good in any other people. The richest of men is the knowledgeable man whose knowledge is needed...! He benefits those who need him and if done without...he benefits himself with the knowledge Allâh [Azza wa Jall ] has placed with him {!} So how is it I see your scholars dying yet the ignorant amongst you not learning...? I fear that the predecessor will depart and the successor will not learn. If the scholar studies, he only increases in knowledge, and he does not take anything away from knowledge. And if the ignorant studies, he will find knowledge firm and established. So how is it that I see you full up with food...yet starved of knowledge {?}” [ Source:- Ibn ‘Abd Al-Barr~Jâmi’ Bayân Al-‘Ilm wa Fadlihi Vol. 2 page #233.] Allâh will say..."What number of years did you stay on earth?" They will say: "We stayed a day or part of a day. Ask of those who keep account." Allâh will say:- "You stayed not but a little, if you had only known! Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose), and that you would not be brought back to Us ?" [Source:- Quran ~Surat Al-Müminün~# 23~ {The Believers}~ A # 112-115] 30
