Sports Five alive Bulldog wrestlers advance to state By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.com

Five of six North Mason wrestlers advanced last weekend to Mat Classic XXVI. Seniors Matt Zink (113 pounds), and Chase Davis (195) and junior Tyler Grewell (170) finished second in their weight classes at the 2A Regional 2 Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Hockinson High School in Brush Prairie. Seniors Grant Hunter (145) and Victor McIntosh (182) both took fourth. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced to the Mat Classic tomorrow and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. “The tournament went pretty well,” head coach Bill McCarty said. “Five of six guys going to state is a good success rate.” He said a couple of the wrestlers didn’t place where he expected them to, but attributed that to mental errors during the tournament. Junior Mark Phillips (126) wrestled for North Mason, but was eliminated after two matches. Zink started his bracket with a 32-second pin against Mark Morris sophomore Hyrum Robinson. He then won by decision 7-2 against Lindbergh junior Chad Omonaka. In the finals, Zink fell to Longview sophomore Orion Yates by pin at 4:35. McCarty said Zink wrestled aggressively and with an uptempo pace during regionals. Davis won his first round match with a 22-second pin against Hockinson freshman Ryan Bishop. He then defeated Mark Morris junior Joe Leal by decision, 8-5. In the finals, Lindbergh senior Trevonn Russell beat Davis by decision, 7-5. Davis made a couple of mental errors during his final match, McCarty said. Grewell earned a technical fall in his first match, defeating Ridgefield junior Vanea McDaniel 19-4. He then beat Renton senior Samuel Nicholas by major decision 10-2 in the semifinals. In his final round, Kingston senior Josh Henden defeated Grewell by major decision, 19-7. Shelton senior Kaitlin Woods earns a near fall on Prairie sophomore Jacqueline Phillips on Saturday at the Girls’ Region 3 Tournament at Hoquiam High School. Competing at 124 pounds, Woods defeated Phillips in triple overtime by decision, 7-2. Woods finished the tournament in third place to advance to Mat Classic XXVI.

Two Highclimbers advance to state wrestling championship By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.com

Kaitlin Woods kept her first opponent scoreless through two rounds at the Girls’ Region 3 Tournament. The problem? She couldn’t muster any points herself. After a slow start, Woods, a Shelton senior, earned a reversal and then a three-point nearfall to defeat Prairie sophomore Jacqueline Phillips 7-2 in triple overtime at 124-pounds Saturday at Hoquiam High School. Woods went on to finish third at the tournament

to advance to Mat Classic XXVI tomorrow and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. The last Shelton girl to reach the state wrestling championship was Kayla Shivers in 2010. “She was relentless,” assistant coach Chris Frazier said after Woods’ first bout. “The other girl had about five opportunities to beat her, but I knew she had it because she’s trained too hard not to try.” While Woods competed in Hoquiam, the Shelton boys’ wrestling team sent 12 Highclimbers to the 3A Region 2 Tournament at Bonney Lake High School. “Regionals was very competitive and provided some tough competition for us,” head coach Chris Lacy said. At regionals, sophomore Riley Riffe (113) was the only Highclimber to advance to the state tournament. He placed fourth. See SHELTON on page B-5

Lady Owls trounce Columbia Adventist MMK to play in district championship By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.com

Jaycee Valley scored in double digits to lead the Mary M. Knight girls’ basketball team to victory in the first round of the 1B Southwest District IV tournament this week. On Monday, Valley netted 17 points in the Lady Owls’ 54-13 defeat of Columbia Ad-

ventist at Castle Rock High School. “We came out very aggressive and we were in rhythm,” head coach Lance Valley said. “Our defense shut them down and it helped having Jaycee (Valley) back from a shoulder injury.” The victory sent the Lady Owls to the district championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday against Taholah at Montesano High School.

Valley also grabbed eight rebounds and four steals. She handed out four assists. Coach Valley said the Lady Owls rebounded well and took care of the ball the whole game. “As a team, we played really well,” he said. Lauren Dierkop scored 11 points and collected 12 rebounds and four steals, while Ashley Kiliz had nine points and a season-high seven rebounds. Carlie Adsero added six points with Melodie Snyder contributing four points.

Finally, Miranda Sowle grabbed nine rebounds and four steals. She also had seven assists and five blocks. The winner of Saturday’s district championship will be the No. 1 seed into the regional basketball tournament next week while the loser will be the No. 2 seed. About a week before winning its district game, the team lost its final regular season game 62-43 on Feb. 11 at Muckleshoot. See OWLS on page B-5

Why are Mason County basketball teams unsuccessful?

F

ive of the six Mason County high school basketball teams just finished a challenging season. When discussing the success or failure of a team, I’ve heard people claim it’s because of the effort put in by the athletes or the leadership abilities of the coaches. I think the story has more to it, however. I’ll use the Mary M. Knight girls’ basketball team as a shining example of how to achieve basketball success. The Lady Owls played their first 1B Southwest District IV game Monday. When I interviewed senior Ashley Kiliz for Athlete of the Week in December, she told me she’d played basketball with the same group of girls since middle school. That’s the first key to success. Athletes have to grow together and know what their teammates are capable of. This isn’t always possible at the larger schools of North Ma-

son and Shelton. Students feed into those high schools from several different middle schools and even more elementary By EMILY schools. HANSON Sometimes, teams are broken up because of skill or they go to different high schools or athletes choose to stop playing. It’s difficult to build a team that isn’t the same from year to year. The next key to success stems from the senior Lady Owls having been coached by Lance Valley their entire basketball careers. Consistency is a major player in the basketball success game and having the same coach every year provides that consistency. The girls know what Valley

expects of them. And more importantly, he knows what each athlete is capable of. At North Mason, head girls’ coach Dave Hawkins just finished his second season, while head boys’ coach Steve Hackett closed out his fourth season with the Bulldogs two weeks ago. At Shelton, head girls’ coach Aaron Leth has now completed three seasons with the team and head boys’ coach Del Sandberg has finished his second season. The Mary M. Knight boys’ team played this season with first-year head coach Joclin Julmist. For four of these five teams, there isn’t much coaching consistency, which makes it difficult to build a team that trusts and respects each others’ abilities. Another important component for success comes from youth development. When three Shelton senior boys had a basketball clinic in

December for children as their senior project, they told me they wanted to do the project because such a clinic wasn’t available for them when they were younger. I also spoke to Sandberg about what youth basketball programs were available in the area. The programs are mostly short-term with few opportunities for competitive play. Outside of school, there isn’t a place to play basketball. I know of three outdoor basketball hoops in Shelton that are open to the public, but children can’t play full pick-up games because the courts are half courts at best. Public indoor basketball courts aren’t available outside of school hours, as far as I know. Athletes can’t be expected to improve their skills if there’s no opportunity to work on them outside of the regular season. See SIDELINE on page B-5

Sandberg said he thought the Highclimbers had five games this season that they could have won. “So that was my goal, to try to win three to five of the 20,” he said. “This season I was more frustrated for the kids to have to play against this competition.” He said the 3A Narrows League was stacked

It’s just the cycle right now we’re going through.” Gonzalez said the difficult season taught him a life lesson. “I learned you’ve got

to keep your composure all the time, even when times are tough,” he said. “This team has helped my character.” Sandberg said he has hope for next year’s team, especially if then-seniors Speaks and DeAndre return to the team. Shelton junior Harrison MacAlevy entered the 3A West Central District III swimming championship having already qualified for state in two events. That didn’t slow him down last weekend. On Saturday, MacAlevy broke the Shelton High School boys’ swim record for the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.08 seconds. The previous record was set in 1989 at 56.60. This was the first boys’ swim record to fall in 10 years. His time won him first place in the event. MacAlevy also won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.99. “You always hope your fast swimmer doesn’t have to put it all on the line to make it to finals,” co-head coach Chad Youngquist said. “Harrison was ranked first in both events for the preliminaries.” Two of Shelton’s relay teams also made it through districts to qualify for the 3A WIAA Boys’ Swimming and Diving State Championship at 6:15 p.m. tomorrow and 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Shelton sophomore Levi Vance takes a breath during his leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay Saturday in the finals of the 3A West Central District III Championship at Hazen High School. MacAlevy finished in first place, but Youngquist said he lacked urgency. “His actions in the finals show how much your mental state affects your performance,” Youngquist said. “When it was important, he stepped up.” MacAlevy is now the third fastest swimmer in the 50-yard freestyle in Shelton history. The 200-yard medley relay team — Dalton Green, Ryder Phelan, MacAlevy and Sean Kealy — took fourth place in the finals with a time of 1:47.71 to advance to state. The 200-yard freestyle team — MacAlevy, Kealy, Levi Vance and

Ryan Taylor — finished in fifth place at 1:34.36. Youngquist said both relay teams dropped their times significantly. “They both moved up from where our entry times ranked us,” he said. Because relay teams are often disqualified easily at districts, Youngquist said he cautioned the boys to be careful during their starts. “I told the guys just be super safe,” he asid. “They were very conservative on their starts and still dropped seconds.” See SWIMMING on page B-5

Wi t h o u t intervention, chronic pain can lead to a vicious cycle. Pain makes it difficult to engage in physical activity, which, in turn, results in a loss in strength and flexibility and more pain. The weaker and more deconditioned chronic pain sufferers become, the more frustrated and depressed they are likely to feel. As a result, pain levels may flare. In order to break this downward spiral, it is suggested that chronic pain sufferers take steps to break the circle of pain by consulting with a physical therapist. By beginning with passive physical therapy (such as massage and application of heat or cold), then progressing to active treatments (such as exercise and stretching), the vicious pain cycle can be broken.

At our practice, we tailor every aspect of an individual’s rehabilitative program to effectively treat their condition and restore their highest level of function. When you require the care of a physical therapist or would like information call SHELTON PHYSICAL THERAPY AND SPORTS MEDICINE at (360) 4265903. We have over 32 years of experience providing physical therapy care. You’ll find us conveniently located at 2300 Kati Ct., Ste. B. New patients are welcome. Treatment of chronic pain syndrome must be tailored for each individual patient because pain thresholds and physical capacity differ. 21824

The Shelton boys’ basketball team was winless this year. On Feb. 11, the Highclimbers ended their season with a 67-27 home loss to Wilson in the Mini Dome. “Before the game, we talked about competing and giving our best effort,” head coach Del Sandberg said. “I told them afterward that they played as hard as they could and that’s all I could ask.” Senior Marques Gonzalez said the season didn’t turn out the way the team had hoped. “Coming into this season, if you’d asked me if we would be 0-20, I would have thought you were stupid,” Gonzalez said. “I felt this team had potential.” Junior Tyler Speaks led the Highclimbers with eight points while Gonzalez netted seven. Senior Andrew Quantz put up four points, while junior Mitchell DeAndre and sophomore Kevin Scott contributed three each. Sophomore Trevor

staying calm. “They’ve got a lot of talent, they’re good players, but they need to learn to keep down their frustrations,” he said. To build next year’s team, Sandberg said he plans to form a summer team to play about 20 games in June, like he did last year.

Pool decisions await further information Concrete cracks, exposed rebar create challenges in maintenance room By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.com

The concrete lid in the Shelton High School pool maintenance room is crumbling. Deep cracks run for inches, sometimes feet. Exposed rebar protrudes from the concrete lid. These are just some of the concerns the Shelton School District Board of Directors are looking into regarding the continued operation of the 40-plus year-old pool. On a recent tour of the maintenance room, district Director of Facilities Bob Woods explained these concerns to board President Brenda Hirschi, board member Gene Crater and other community members. “The chlorine is permeating the concrete,” Woods said. “The rebar is rusting and can burst the concrete.” The pool circulation pump pit and the pool filter pit are in the maintenance room along with the boilers. Beneath the concrete lid, scaffolding was erected in 2013 to support crumbling concrete. “To replace the concrete lid, the hot water boilers have to be taken out,” Woods said. The pool was built in the early 1970s. Boilers were installed during the 2005-2006

Journal photo by Emily Hanson

Bob Woods, Shelton School District director of facilities, points out exposed rebar in the concrete lid of the Shelton High School pool maintenance room. school year. Woods said the boilers were placed on the cement lid with the closest one about 4 feet from the pool filter pit because that was a convenient location. That convenience has taken

a toll on the boilers, however. Chlorine from the pit has settled on combustion air bands of the boilers, causing corrosion. If the boilers aren’t moved, they’ll keep corroding and the electronics inside will corrode as well, Woods said.

To prevent further corrosion, the district’s plan is to move the boilers outside of the pool maintenance room and place them near the gas meters outside of the Shelton Mini Dome. The district plans to build a structure around

the meters and boilers to protect them from the elements. Another issue with the pool building lies on the outside wall of the pool maintenance room. There, Woods pointed out deep cracks in the bricks that appear to be caused by the bricks bowing. The cause of the bowing is not known. On Feb. 7, a structural engineer from PCS Structural Solutions took a look at the maintenance room, focusing on the wall and pit, Hirschi said. “The report hasn’t been completed yet,” she said in a phone interview with the Journal on Feb. 13. The school board voted Jan. 28 to hire a subject matter expert to compile a report of what repairs need to be done to keep the pool and the maintenance room operational. Hirschi said the cost for the expert is not yet known. The cost for repairs won’t be known until after the subject matter expert evaluates the condition and gives the district a final report. At that meeting, the board also voted to create an advisory committee. While Hirschi said several people have volunteered for the committee and board members have come up with additional names, the committee has not been formed. Information for the committee to examine is not available either. The board is scheduled to meet at 5:45 p.m. Feb. 25 at CHOICE Alternative School. However, Hirschi didn’t know whether the pool will be discussed at that meeting.

The Shelton girls’ basketball team brought home one final victory before the end of its season last week. On Feb. 10, the Lady Highclimbers defeated Foss 42-27 in Tacoma. “Our game against Foss was a good game,” head coach Aaron Leth said. “The girls had a good game defensively, racking up 23 steals on the night. We showed them three different defenses throughout the night and played strong and executed well.”

The game was the girls’ best free-throw shooting game of the season. Shelton went 16-for-22 from the line. Senior Cheyenne Overlin led the Lady Highclimbers with 13 points. She shot 7-for-8 from the line, while senior Taylor Stroud went 4-for-6 behind the arc to net 12 points. Four junior varsity players gained varsity experience against Foss, Leth said. Shelton followed the victory with a 74-17 loss Feb. 12 at Wilson. “We knew coming in that it was going to be a tough game,” Leth said. “We just didn’t play well the

whole game. It was the highest turnover game we have had all year long.” Wilson, the No. 11 team in the state, took advantage of Shelton’s turnovers and turned them into quick transition points, Leth said. “It was definitely not how we wanted to end the season,” he added. Senior Jordan Leach led the team with six points, while junior Jessica Johnson put up four and Stroud scored three. Senior Alyssa York and Overlin scored two points each. The Shelton girls finished their season 4-16.

A late scoring drive wasn’t enough to pull the Mary M. Knight boys’ basketball team out of its deficit last week during its final game of the season. On Feb. 11, Muckleshoot defeated the Knight Owls 53-29. “The kids played hard, we just didn’t

make shots and the defense wasn’t consistent,” head coach Joclin Julmist said. “We got outrebounded.” Mary M. Knight scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to keep up with Muckleshoot’s 16 points in the quarter. But by the fourth, Muckleshoot already had a 3716 lead. Adam Pais led the Knight Owls with eight points, while Matthew

Thompson and Austin Renecker scored five points each. James Anderson, Paul Werly and Jason Shaw contributed three points each. Alec McGee added two points. Julmist said this was a tough season for the Knight Owls. “I really feel bad for the kids that stuck it out the entire season,” he said. “I appreciate all the hard work they put in.

Hopefully, they continue to play year-round and fall in love with the game and come back next season as better basketball players.” He added that the seniors led the team well this season. “Even though we didn’t win many games, I hope they made some fun memories,” Julmist said. The Knight Owls finished their season 2-17.

“All the kids competed very well, but many of them ran into buzzsaws,” Lacy said. “Only three of our wrestlers had been to regionals before and the lack of postseason experience showed.” Woods’ match with Phillips proved close in the opening rounds. Tied at zero, the bout entered round three, where Woods gave Phillips one point for an illegal hold and allowed an escape. Then Woods earned her first takedown on Phillips to tie the match at two points and send it to overtime. At the start of a third overtime round, the match was still tied at two points. That’s when Woods’ wrestling experience kicked in. Woods said she was a little surprised the match was so close. “(Phillips) was pretty strong, so when I was trying to free my leg or something, she didn’t give up,” Woods said. “I was a little worried, but I knew I could take her down.” When the bout reached its third overtime, Woods said she just thought that she had to keep fighting to push through and not give up. Woods lost her second bout with a 2 minute, 30 second pin to Centralia junior Hailey Huerta. “She wrestled the girl who took first and earned the first takedown,” Frazier said. “She got caught unexpectedly in the second round and was pinned.” In the consolation bracket, Woods defeated Yelm sophomore Kaylin Welson by decision, 1710. Wrestling for third place, Woods once again faced Phillips. “It went similar to the first-round bout, but the other girl didn’t have the experience to wrestle Kaitlin,” Frazier said. He added that during the tournament, Woods made few, if any, mistakes. “She wrestled very technically sound,” Frazier said. “When she was on her feet, she was very active. She moved around a lot and got many takedowns. I was impressed.” While Riffe advanced on the boys’ side, senior Gil Ramos (126) and sophomore Chase Salisbury (138) finished in

“In the finals, Tyler wrestled a kid he’s beat a few times,” McCarty said. “This time, I think they scouted him and noticed some tendencies he has. Tyler was taken down by a single leg repeatedly.” Hunter won his first match by pin at 3:32, but lost by decision 10-4 in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, Hunter won by decision 5-3, before losing 9-5 while wrestling for third. “I think Grant got a little nervous,” McCarty said. “He’s never been to regionals before.”

Shelton assistant wrestling coach Chris Frazier gives advice to senior Kaitlin Woods during her first-round bout at 124 pounds at the Girls’ Region 3 Tournament at Hoquiam High School.

“All the kids competed very well, but many of them ran into buzzsaws.” Chris Lacy, SHS head wrestling coach sixth. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced to state. Riffe started the tournament with an 8-6 decision victory against Decatur junior Moses Griffen. He then lost 8-3 to Timberline sophomore Miles Hart. In the consolation bracket, Riffe defeated Peninsula freshman Seth Wahto by decision, 9-8. Wrestling for fourth place, Riffe lost to Griffen by decision, 6-4. Lacy said the two bouts Riffe won were with last-second heroics. “His first victory came against an excellent wrestler from Decatur,” Lacy said. “Riffe trailed by two points and earned a takedown with less than two seconds remaining in the third period. He followed this up with a takedown in overtime for the victory.” Against Wahto, Riffe trailed by three points with less than five seconds left. “He scrambled for a reversal and two-point nearfall as time expired,” Lacy said. “Riley did not even realize that he had won until he got back to the coaches’ corner. He had to ask us twice if he had won.” Although Ramos wasn’t able to advance to state, Lacy said he

showed a lot of improvement in his match for fifth and sixth place. “It was a rematch of the 3A Narrows League finals,” Lacy said. “Gil lost that weekend by a large margin. This weekend, he went into the third period down 0-4. Gil chose top position and earned nearfall points and gave himself several chances to win the match.” Lacy said Ramos has had a tremendous career at Shelton and the team has been fortunate to have him as a leader. He added that Salisbury had opportunities to win his match to advance to state in the third period. “He came up a little short and lost by decision to a tough wrestler from Enumclaw,” Lacy said. “Chase really improved this season and went into the regional tournament as focused as we have ever seen him.” Although the other nine wrestlers Shelton took to state lost out after two bouts, he said the wrestlers competing at regionals showed their hard work. “Four of our wrestlers are in their first year of the sport, so reaching this level of competition was a great accomplishment,” Lacy said.

OWLS Continued from page B-1 “This game was about turnovers,” Valley said. “We had too many for not being full-court pressed.” Although the Lady Owls rebounded well, he said the girls couldn’t hit their shots from the outside. “Snyder and Adsero did their job inside, but my guards couldn’t get untracked,” Valley said. Another difficulty for the team was that Jaycee Valley didn’t play because of a shoulder injury.

During the regular season, there isn’t enough practice times between games to truly focus on improvment. Finally, Sandberg told me every league and every team goes through cycles of athleticism. The boys and girls of Shelton are playing against teams that are taller, faster and just more athletic. How can a team respond to that? In many of these games, I think the goal wasn’t to win, it was to keep the final score as close as possible. The Mason County basketball players worked hard this season. Athletes made improvements to their skills and spread a few victories throughout the last few months. So when thinking about this season, don’t just assume that the teams had losing records because the athletes weren’t trying hard enough or the coaching staffs didn’t do their jobs well enough.

As it heads into state, the medley relay team is ranked 18th while the 200-freestyle relay team is ranked 16th. To reach the finals, a team has to finish in the top 16. “That’s a precarious place to be,” Youngquist said. “They have to improve or they’re not getting to the finals.” Along with the swimmers, four Shelton divers advanced to state. Troy Krumpols and Jon Netzel qualified for state about three weeks ago, co-head coach Rob Phelan said. Luke Netzel and Zach Netzel received wild cards to state after districts. “It’s pretty amazing,” Phelan said. “I don’t think we’ve ever had four divers at state before.” He said Zach Netzel’s performance was the highlight of the championship for him. “Zach dove extremely well up to eight dives,” Phelan said. Luke Netzel dove consistently straight through, Phelan added. “That’s really hard to do,” he said. At the state championship, divers will be cut after five dives and again after eight. “We want to get them as far as we can,” Phelan said.

“We didn’t bring the defensive intensity and Muckleshoot took advantage,” Valley said. “We didn’t guard the 3-point shot very well as they hit eight (3-pointers). When you give up 24 points from behind the arc, it’s hard to win the game.” Adsero led the team with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Snyder scored 13 points and had five rebounds and three steals. Sowle put up nine points with five rebounds, two steals, eight assists and three blocks. Finally, Dierkop had four points and eight rebounds.

Finally, McIntosh won his first match by major decision 12-3 and then lost with a 5:27 pin in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, he pinned his opponent 2:59 and then lost for third by decision 10-7. “It’s always going to be hard for Victor because he walks around near 170 pounds and he wrestles at 182 pounds,” McCarty said. He added that he was impressed with the 2A Olympic League wrestlers’ showing. The league sent 42 wrestlers to the regional tournament and 31 of them advanced to state. “The Olympic League overall just really had a great day,” McCarty said.

Shelton Special Olympics face off against SHS staff By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.com

The final minute was a free-for-all. Ten Shelton High School staff members rushed the court Feb. 13 in the Mini Dome in response to the Shelton Special Olympics team putting its whole team in the game — all 27 of them. The annual game between the two teams wasn’t about the score, coach Scotti Crump said. “The purpose is to create a community with the school,” she added. “It creates a bond between the kids and their teachers. And it’s kind of a rewarding deal to play against the teachers.” The game was the culmination of the Special Olympics season for Shelton after the teams competed in their final postseason game at the start of the month. On Feb. 1, Shelton’s three Special Olympics teams competed at the Special Olympics Southwest Region Bas-

ketball Tournament in Bremerton. Athletes ranging from as young as 8 to older than 22 competed from 106 teams. The athletes were split into three age groups: Juniors (8 to 15), Seniors (16 to 21) and Masters (22 and older). Crump, a coach for 16 years, took her team to a fifth-place finish. “The kids play so good, it just wasn’t in the cards this year,” she said. “I’m proud of them.” Nate Sartori and Gar Thornton coach Shelton’s other two teams. Sartori has been with the program for 11 years, while Thornton just completed his 18th year of coaching. Sartori’s team finished regionals in third place, while Thornton’s team took second. Only the No. 1 team at regionals advanced to the state finals. “We’ve missed state by one basket the last two years,” Crump said. She said the teams competed well all season. “They amazed me how much they picked the game up this year,” she added.

Sport clam season opens early at park Action: Opens the sport clam fishing season early. Effective date: March 1, 2014, until further notice. Species affected: All clams. Location: Dosewallips State Park. This beach is in Jefferson County on Hood Canal. Reason for action: Surveys indicate that the clam population on this beach can support a season of the same length as last year. The earlier opening date provides a more continuous recreational clamming opportunity in the Hood Canal area, particularly with this year’s closure of nearby Point Whitney Tidelands. Oyster season at Dosewallips State Park remains open yearround. Information contact: Alex Bradbury, WDFW Port Townsend Field Office, 3023030, ext. 302. Fishers must have a current Washington fishing license, appropriate to the fishery. Check the WDFW Fishing in Washington rules pamphlet for details on fishing seasons and regulations. Fishing rules are subject to change. Check the WDFW fishing hot line for the latest rule information at 9022500, press 2 for recreational rules. For the Shellfish Rule Change hot line, call 796-3215 or toll free 1-866-880-5431.

Proposed clam digs scheduled STAFF REPORT news@masoncounty.com

Clam diggers looking forward to the next razor clam dig on Washington beaches now have two more months of possible options to consider. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has released a list of proposed digs in March and April, adding to one previously announced for Feb. 26-28. None of those digs has yet received final approval, but the list will allow diggers to start planning their next trip to the beach, said Dan Ayres, WDFW shellfish manager. “We expect to add some digs at Mocrocks and Copalis in April, but we need to measure harvest levels next month before we can do that,” Ayres said. “As usual, we’ll give the final word on all of the scheduled digs once we receive the results of upcoming marine toxin tests.” Ayres also noted that the seasonal shift from evening tides to morning tides will occur March 30, four days into a proposed six-day dig. “That’s another reason to announce these tentative digging dates as soon as possible, he said. “The last thing we want to do is take people by surprise.” Proposed digs are tentatively scheduled on the following dates, beaches and low tides:

Ayres noted that the Long Beach Razor Clam Festival will be April 1920. Information is available at longbeachrazorclamfestival.com. Under state law, diggers can take 15 razor clams per day and are required to keep the first 15 they dig. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container. All diggers ages 15 or older must have an applicable 2013-14 fishing license to harvest razor clams on any beach. Licenses, ranging from a three-day razor clam license to an annual combination fishing license, are available website at fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov and from license vendors around the state.
