BEING A FEMALE COLLEGIATE ATHLETE eing a college athlete is so much more than just showing up to practice for two hours a day and playing in an occasional game. It is about pushing yourself to an even higher level of motivation, determination, and work ethic day in and day out. Being a college athlete requires you to push yourself both mentally, physically, and emotionally further than you thought you could, because being “good” is not going to get you very far at the colligate level. It is important as a college athlete to maintain a high level of disciple both in your sport and also in your time management. Passion is also incredibly important when desiring to succeed in a sport, or in anything for that matter. If you’re going to push yourself right up to the line of breaking down mentally and physically then it better be something you’re passionate about. Being a part of a team is also a huge part of what it means to be a college athlete. Recognizing that the things that you do or do not do affect not only yourself but also affect an entire team is something that cannot be taken lightly. Learning to work for and with others is an incredible life skill that is learned through being an athlete. Learning that success will come when unity within a team is deeply rooted in service and love for each other is also gained through being an athlete. More specifically, being a female athlete makes things a little bit more unique. Aside from it being a bit more emotional and dramatic from time to time, there are a lot of different challenges that male athletes do not necessarily have

to deal with. One of the challenges is recognizing that there is not going to be a lot of recognition. Women’s sports are not going to get as much press, as many fans, or as much glory as the men’s sports do, which is understandable! It just adds a unique aspect to playing a sport at a higher level. It is also hard as a female athlete to accept the fact that we cannot be as strong or as fast as the male athletes; our bodies were simply not created to sustain as high of a level of intensity in sports as men’s bodies can. Understanding and accepting that is very important as a female athlete. Being an athlete teaches you innumerable amounts of lessons that are so paralleled to things pertaining to life. I have learned more about myself, faith, others, and just life in general from being an athlete, and these are things I do not know how I would have learned had it not been for the opportunity to be involved in sports throughout my life and through college. -Ally Witt

DAY IN THE LIFE OF WILLS FRANCIS oming from a very relaxed highschool swimming program to swimming on the Wheaton College swim team was no easy transition. I was forced to adjust to a lifestyle of swim training rather than an after-school hobby. Here at Wheaton, swimmers take their training very seriously, and you almost never walk into an easy day. In the peak of our training, my day starts at 5:30 am. I wake up and hopefully grab a piece of fruit or a granola bar to get my body moving and awake as I drive to the pool with the 3 other senior captains I live with. We arrive and meet with the coach in suits at 6am sharp. Morning practice is usually focused on kicking, so we will get in up to 3000 yards in an hour and a half. Practice begins with warm up and getting in some slow interval, distance kicking then we get into faster kicks on shorter intervals. One of our coach’s favorite sets is 10 100s on 1:30 each with each getting faster. After this we do some resistance swimming where we attach a mesh bag filled with tennis balls to our waists. We only swim with the ball bags in short distance, slow interval sprints to focus on sprinting at a high kicking intensity. While I, and most of the sprinters, only swim mornings until 7:15 or so, many of the distance swimmers will continue swimming until 8, usually getting in up to 6000 yards in morning practice alone. After practice I hop in the shower, get dressed, and run to grab some breakfast before my first class. I usually have two classes a day and work on homework in the early afternoon in an attempt to not stay up super late because waking up at 5:30 takes a toll with only 4 hours of sleep. At 3:30pm, I arrive back at the pool for a team meeting where we discuss how our training is going and what we need to do to prepare harder and smarter. Team meeting usually

includes a devotional from an athlete and some information we need to know about an upcoming meet or practice protocol. At 4pm we are back in the water. On a typical Monday or Friday when we have doubles, we will work primarily on our freestyle stroke with minimal specialty stroke focus. Friday practice usually starts with a warm up and some distance swimming to get our bodies prepped and ready to go fast. We then go into some medium rest, medium distance swimming such as a few 200s freestyle with around 15 seconds of rest in between each one. We then go into some descending swims which means each swim is faster than the one before. For example, we will swim 6 100s with the last one being close to as fast as we can go. Around this time I start questioning why I continue to do this painful sport. From here we do what coach calls a “measurement set” which helps assess our level of training potential. We will do 100s with each 100 on a faster interval than the one before until we are too exhausted to make the interval. For example, we will start the 100s on the 1:40, then 1:35, then 1:30, then 1:25, etc until we cannot touch the wall before the next one begins. Overall we swim around 5000-6000 yards, close to 3 and a half miles, over an hour and a half. The sprinters then get out and go into the weightroom for lifting. My lifting group focuses on heavier loads with high intensity because of our body type and need for explosive power in the 50 and 100. Our most common lifts are pullups, bench presses, squats, dips, and weighted core exercises. We will lift for another hour and then shower and change to head to dinner. We try to eat well and get lots of sleep to get up and do it all over again. -Wills Francis

Eat LIke a COLLEGIATE Athlete Weekly In-Season Diet Plan of Logan Meurer (Senior, Team Captain. 157 lbs)

At the start of the season, weight cutting is the most difficult. This is due to the fact that your body is essentially in shock from the increase in calories burned, and the decrease in calories and water taken in. For example, on a normal Saturday during the beginning of the season, I will weigh in at roughly 7am at a tournament. By the end of the day, I could be anywhere from 10-12 pounds heavier than what I weighed in at that same morning. As the season goes on, however, the weight cut gets a little easier, and I typically don’t gain as much weight back the days following a weigh in. For example, I may only be 6-8 pounds heavier than what I weighed in at during the week. Keep in mind, I only lost about 13 pounds in order to make weight this year, which is not much compared to some of my teammates who lost 20+ pounds. Here’s what I would typically eat during a competition week:

Monday-Thursday (my portions continually get smaller as the week goes on)

Breakfast Medium sized serving of scrambled eggs Small bowl of yogurt w/ granola 1 grapefruit 1 glass of skim milk

Lunch Salad w/ lunch meat or hard boiled egg on top 1 glass of water

Dinner Small serving of a carbohydrate (typically pasta or rice) 1 serving of chicken or beef Spinach salad with sunflower or pumpkins seeds & little dressing 1 glass of water or Gatorade

Friday

Breakfast 1 apple (or nothing depending on weight) 1 cup of coffee

Lunch Typically nothing (maybe a slice of bread w/ peanut butter, depending on how much I weigh) Dinner 1 six inch flat bread sub sandwich w/ meat only (sometimes nothing depending on weight) *I drink very little during the day on Fridays. Probably less than 24oz of water throughout the entire day

Saturday

Weigh in around 7am, then slowly rehydrate and refuel throughout the day in between wrestling matches

Sunday

Eat normally, and then start working off the weight (8-12 pounds) that I gained over the weekend so I can be ready for the next tournament
