Congratulations to the youth Mustang trainers! You are the future of horse training in the Northeast and the future looks bright! In 2009, I was fortunate enough to compete in the Extreme Mustang Makeover in Tennessee. The lessons I learned from this experience were unlike training any other equine partner. Because of this, I chose to compete again in 2012, this time with two Mustangs in the Extreme Mustang Makeover in New Jersey. Again, I found this experience to be extremely rewarding in teaching lessons such as patience, humility, persistence, and commitment. I quickly realized that this competition was unlike any other offered in the Northeast. I thought about the importance of the lessons I learned from working with Mustangs and how valuable these lessons would be for young trainers in our area. Jessica and I began exploring the possibility of exposing trainers in the Northeast to a unique training opportunity as well as showcasing the talents of the Mustang. Our goal was to bring this amazing horse into the lives and barns of those in New England. This dream became a reality in 2014 through a partnership between the Bureau of land Management, the Mustang heritage foundation, and It’s a Pleasure Training. Jessica and I organized the first Massachusetts Youth Mustang Makeover. Youth trainers ages eight to 17 are selected based on experience, facility, and commitment. Trainers receive an untouched Mustang under 24 months old. They are tasked with all

aspects of gentling, haltering, and preparing their Mustang for competition. Trainers have approximately 100 days to complete this task and return for a two-day judged competition where they can showcase their achievements.

Peter and Jessica Whitmore

To date more than 70 Mustangs have been gentled and placed in homes by the youth trainers of the Northeast. The commitment and dedication of these trainers have provided young Mustangs the education needed to ensure a promising future. The Mustangs have in return taught these young trainers skills which will prove valuable in any field they choose to pursue. After watching these competitions, I believe that the horses in the Northeast are in good hands. These young trainers continue to impress all who witness what they can achieve in just a short amount of time. Enjoy the 2017 Youth Mustang Challenge and cheer on these amazing teams of youth and Mustangs!

Youth Mustang Challenge PURPOSE The mission of the Mustang heritage foundation is to increase the adoption of Bureau of land Management–housed American Mustangs through innovative gentling (training) competitions and awareness programs. In keeping with this mission, the Youth Mustang Challenge has been created to place yearling Mustangs in adoptive homes. These events involve youth, ages 8 to 17 years of age, in the training and adoption of Mustangs 12 to 24 months old. Participating youth help promote the adoption of these national treasures by showcasing the Mustang’s value and trainability. The program is also designed to help youth build and improve their horsemanship skills and life skills through competition.

OVERVIEW The Youth Mustang Challenge is a cooperative effort between the Mustang heritage foundation’s Trainer Incentive Program and the Bureau of land Management’s Wild horse and Burro Program and is hosted and managed by Peter and Jessica Whitmore of It’s A Pleasure Training. Youth trainers picked up their Mustangs in logan Township, New Jersey, on March 4. Youth had to ensure the safety of their Mustang by following specific trailering requirements and housing guidelines. Mustangs were assigned to youth randomly at the pick up. The youth are required to condition and train their Mustang for approximately 100 days and compete during the Youth Mustang Challenge held in conjunction with the Extreme Mustang Makeover for prizes and awards. Youth trainers are responsible for all care-related costs from the day they pick up their Mustang through the conclusion of the competition and receive a $200 stipend from the Mustang heritage foundation to offset horse care expenses and hauling costs. Mustangs are as comparable in size and age as possible, with current vaccinations, health papers, and trimmed hooves. Mustang trainers must be humane and compassionate. least-resistance techniques are encouraged.

YOUTH TRAINERS

Sage Witham-Stevens I’m Sage from Charlestown, rhode Island, and I’m 15 years old. I’ve been in 4-h for the majority of my life. I’m also a member of the Chariho future farmers of America (ffA) and plan to compete in upcoming years. I trail ride and compete in versatility and hunter paces. My family is fostering six horses including my Mustang filly Keena — the first Mustang I’ve ever trained from the ground up. She’s been quite a challenge and I believe she’ll be one of the most amazing horses with a couple more years of experience and training. She’s incredibly smart but quite sassy! To be in the Youth Mustang Challenge has been an incredible experi-

ence and I’ve learned a lot about Mustangs, training, and myself.

Clare Nelson Clare Nelson is the youngest of five children and lives on a farm in upstate New York. She’s a junior in high school and enjoys playing volleyball and skiing. She has a great love for animals and has really taken to owning and caring for her first horse, lana. They’ve both grown tremendously throughout these 100 days. lana has already become a member of the family and the family is looking forward to watching them grow and learn new skills together.

Mia Nagle Nine-year-old Mia lives in Southwick, Massachusetts, and this is her first experience working with Mustangs. She’s a member of 4-h Calvary horse Club and Westfield riding Club. “It takes a lot of patience and dedication,” says Mia about her biggest challenge with Aspen — getting a halter on her. Mia’s favorite memory was “when we had an adult trainer come to help with that and give us some tips. Thank you, rachel!” Many thanks to Westfield riding Club for their generous sponsorship and support of Mia and Aspen. heartfelt thanks to Clay and Vanessa Maloney and the J &M Stables family for their sponsorship and support of

Mia throughout every step of this journey.

Marissa Paige Dilla While early in her equestrian journey, Marissa, 16, has been riding since the age of six. Marissa's passion for horses led to her getting her first horse and restarting his training from the ground up. Marissa continues to expand her knowledge of horsemanship and horse training. She enjoys English pleasure, jumping, eventing, dressage, trick riding, roman riding, and trail riding. This competition is Marissa's first competitive horse training event. She looks forward to continuing her work with her 11-month-old Mustang Scarlett. Marissa's goal is to help train other young horses and riders

who share the same passion for horses as she does and to help them better understand the bond shared between horse and handler. 16

YOUTH TRAINERS

Olivia Kornbrek My name is Olivia and my Mustang’s name is Peggy. I’ve been working with horses basically my whole life. At the age of 11, I got my first horse, she was an Arabian/Quarter horse who was pretty green. She sparked my interest in to getting more in depth with horses. I plan to go to college to major in equine business management in the fall of 2018. I would like to thank my parents for helping me through this and Samantha Simpfenderfer of S.S. Equestrian for assisting me in every way I needed.

Cat Zimmerman Cat, 15, is a self taught youth Mustang trainer from Morristown, New Jersey. She’s been around horses since the age of three and found a passion for training Mustangs at the age of 12. focusing on liberty and trick training, she performs with her small team of Mustangs at various events on the East Coast to promote adoption of Mustangs. In her third year participating in the Youth Mustang Challenge, she’s competing with a bay yearling filly, Minnie Mouse. “Minnie is an amazing filly, who ever since her first moments off the trailer, has been ready for whatever is thrown at her,” says Cat. “She’s trusting, willing, smart,

and brave . . . each trait being shown with each day of training.” 18

YOUTH TRAINERS

Rachel Roland My name is rachel. I'm an 18-year-old senior at John Jay high School in Wappingers, New York. I'll be attending Morrisville State College in the fall to study equine science and management. This is my first Youth Mustang Challenge. I've been riding and working with horses for almost 13 years. I've always loved Mustangs since I was a little girl. I learned about the challenge last year and attended the competition with friends. I was inspired to try to do it on my own. The journey with Kiara has been a crazy one. She's been quite a challenge but I've learned so much from her. I can't wait to see

how we grow as a pair!

James Duffy James, 17, of garwood, New Jersey, had two weeks until the competition when he wrote this: “This has become my life. Every day includes hours with gwen. Everything else gets fit in around working with her. I can’t believe I spent the first week just trying to be able to touch her. Now she’s such a different horse compared to who she was on March 3. I know I’ve changed too. That can happen, working this hard toward one goal, every day, for 100 days.” “A huge thank you to Brittani Bojum of legacy riding Stables for being a terrific resource and sponsor through the whole process. Everyone has been so encouraging. My parents

have been my biggest supporters throughout the makeover!” 19

YOUTH TRAINERS

Cody Reinbold I’m Cody reinbold and I’m eight years old. This will be my first year competing in the Youth Mustang Challenge. I’ve watched my brother and dad compete the last few years and have looked forward to my chance to compete with them. My Mustang’s name is Kiara, a.k.a. Ki Ki as a nickname. Being in the Youth Mustang Challenge has been more work than I thought it was going to be but I’ve learned a lot about myself and my horse. My dad told me that you can learn a lot about yourself by training horses and I’ve learned that’s very true. I’ve worked hard with my Mustang to desensitize her to many things

including rope being thrown around her so that I may someday use her to help rope our cows.

Chase Reinbold My name is Chase and I’m 10 years old. This will be my third year competing in the Youth Mustang Challenge. I have learned more and more each year and this year has been filled with many lessons. My horse flicka was very scared in the beginning and I needed to work harder to earn her trust than with any other Mustang I’ve worked with. My goal was to persevere with her and I have. She’s much calmer and more trusting. I enjoy training Mustangs, riding with my dad, and helping him on our ranch. 20

Clinician/Trainer

Luke Reinbold Horsemanship offers one and two day clinics focusing on anything from basic horsemanship to more advanced skills. Luke believes the relationship between horse and rider should be something that is enjoyed; regardless of the task being done. Colt starting, problem solving and tune ups are also available.

Luke trains horses using a straight forward, common sense approach to create a versatile partner. The goal is for every horse that leaves our facility to have a solid and versatile foundation.

Gracie-Lynn Mastalerz gracie-lynn Mastalerz is 16 years old. She’s from Attleboro, Massachusetts. horses and dance have been her passions since she was a toddler. At the 2014 Equine Affaire, gracie first learned of the Mustang heritage foundation and the Youth Mustang Challenge. The thought of being able to help a wild horse and give him a home very much intrigued gracie. She applied and was accepted to compete in the 2015 Youth Mustang Challenge. little did gracie know, or could ever imagine, was the bond she and her new Mustang would form. reno came to gracie as a two-year-old, untouched wild horse. Just two years later gracie and reno are enjoying riding, going to versatility competitions, and much more. This experience of gentling her once wild horse was like no other.

gracie was eager for that experience again. This weekend she will demonstrate the love, trust, and bond between her and her yearling Mustang, hazelnut.

YOUTH TRAINERS

Caelyn Waite Thirteen-year-old Caelyn Waite is a recent high-honors graduate of Pentucket Middle School. She was given the opportunity of a lifetime by Kaitlyne Wadman, a fellow Mustang trainer and AQhA Professional horseman to participate in the Youth Mustang Challenge. In the future, Caelyn plans to help run Kaitlyne Wadman Mustangs, a nonprofit focused on giving third-strike Mustangs the homes they deserve. Caelyn has moderate experience with Mustangs through watching competitors and challenges through previous years, and she hopes to give it her all this year with her yearling filly Small Town girl, a.k.a. lizzy

whom she is working to keep after this competition.

Ginger Plache I’ve always loved horses and have wanted to train them. When I got my very own horse Sky, she only knew the basics — she hadn't cantered in five years. Now she can do all four gaits, jump, liberty work, and ground driving. She’s an amazing horse and I wouldn't be who I am today if not for her. I’ve grown to love my Mustang Sephira, she’s an amazing horse! She’s taught me so much and she’s so unbelievably special to me. It’s been a real roller coaster ride but it has been an amazing experience and has taught me a lot.

All of these Mustangs are amazing and deserve homes. They have such personality and can be wonderful horses. I’m so lucky to be able to do this. 23

YOUTH TRAINER

Tori-Lynn Brinton time, and then finally things turned around and I realized that I never knew a horse could pick up on so much so quickly, it blew my socks off, let me tell you. I'm very happy with what we’ve accomplished and I'm very confident in how well things have gone with luna. I’ve come to the conclusion that it's not so much about what I've taught luna, but more of what she's taught me.

My family has 23 horses — two of them foals. This was the deciding factor in knowing what I wanted to do. I started to work with them. Now I’ve a passion for working with horses. When starting with luna, I didn't realize how much I still had to learn and how far I could get. It’s definitely been a hard road — the process of training luna. I had started to lose hope for the longest
