Massimiliano Muner’s “Respirare” (Breathe) series, which is part of the ‘Noise – Polaroid Beyond Sound’ project, is composed of seven Polaroids and is the result of a lengthy pursuit originating in apathy.
La serie ‘Respirare’ del progetto ‘Noise - Polaroid oltre il suono’ di Massimiliano Muner, composta da sette polaroid, è il risultato di una lunga ricerca che trova origine nell’apatia.
Compared to his previous works, the present series definitely marks a turning point in his art career: this is the very first time, in fact, he has devoted himself to abstract photography.
Paragonandola alle opere precedenti, questa serie denota un punto di svolta della sua carriera artistica: mai prima d’ora, infatti, si era dedicato a rappresentazioni astratte.
His pursuit starts from the abandonment of the “corpus” concept, intended as a tool enabling us to learn about the world and from ‘global emotional amnesia’. It’s a journey to the far edges of life made as a matter of course, almost marking clarity of purpose.
La sua ricerca parte dall’abbandono del concetto di «corpus», inteso come strumento che ci permette di conoscere il mondo, e da una totale amnesia dei sentimenti. È un viaggio ai confini della vita, affrontato con estrema naturalezza, quasi a rimarcare la chiarezza dei suoi intenti.
After removing what is left is primal instinct to remind us that we are alive, which becomes perhaps a pretext to remind himself in the first place and others in the second place that he is/we are alive. Though aware that he uses art to achieve immortality, Muner once again gives in to aesthetic pleasure. Intense colours and lines, which seem to pierce the Polaroids, render the image composition even more refined. The “Respirare” (Breathe) series is driven by pure instinct and no longer by reason, and therefore even succeeds in going beyond the patterns of classic photography, in that having removed the ”object”, what is invisible becomes visible.
Tolto il superfluo, ciò che rimane è l’istinto primordiale che diventa pretesto per ricordare, prima che a tutti gli altri, a se stesso di essere vivo. Pur essendo consapevole di utilizzare l’arte ai fini della propria conservazione, Muner non si nega, anche questa volta, il piacere dell’estetica. Colori graffianti e linee che sembrano perforare le Polaroid, rendono le sue composizioni ancora più raffinate. In un gioco d’istinti, non più ragionato, la serie “Respirare” riesce, infine, persino a superare gli schemi della fotografia classica: venuto a mancare l’«oggetto», l’invisibile diventa visibile.

BIO MASSIMILIANO MUNER [Italian, born 1984]
Receiver in 2011 of the first prize at the first ‘Festival of Instant Photography ‘ISO600’ held in Milan for the creative technique he used in cutting and reassembling polaroid images.
Nel 2011 viene premiato per la particolare tecnica creativa del taglio delle immagini Polaroid, vince a Milano il primo Festival della Fotografia Istantanea ISO600.
Since 2012 he is founder and, until 2015, also coordinator of ‘Officina Istantanea’, an association of photographers aiming to promote analogue and instant photography and to pay homage to Edwin Land, inventor of the Polaroid. He is one of the artists of the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice and of the Barbara Frigerio Contemporary Art Gallery in Milan since 2012. Muner worked with Maurizio Galimberti in a workshop held at Casa Tre Oci in Venice. Guest of the ‘Impossible Project in 2013 at Milan’s Photoshow, he also took part in the 17th International art Symposium Medulin (HR).
Nel 2012 fonda l’Associazione Fotografica Officina Istantanea, per promuovere la fotografia analogica e istantanea, omaggiando la figura di Edwin Land, inventore della Polaroid, ne è presidente e coordinatore per i primi quattro anni. Dallo stesso anno è tra gli artisti della Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa di Venezia e della galleria Barbara Frigerio Contemporary Art di Milano. Conosce Maurizio Galimberti con cui collabora in un suo workshop a Venezia a Casa Tre Oci, nello stesso anno è ospite di Impossible Project al Photoshow di Milano per esporre la propria particolare tecnica artistica, partecipa quindi al 17° International Art Symposium Medulin (HR).
Muner started his career as a professional photographer and created Spaziowhite in 2013. He is the creator and the coordinator of Fotografia Zero Pixel project - a festival set up to pay tribute to old photographic techniques. In 2016 he founded Silver Age, a research center for photography and visual arts. In 2017 some of his works have been chosen by Italo Zannier and Emanuela Sesti to take part in an Alinari Museum exhibition.
Dal 2013 è fotografo professionista e crea Spaziowhite. Dal 2014 è ideatore e coordinatore del progetto Fotografia Zero Pixel, un festival creato per preservare e omaggiare le tecniche fotografiche antiche. Nel 2016 fonda Silver Age, centro di ricerca per la fotografia e le arti visive. Nel 2017 alcuni suoi lavori vengono selezionati da Italo Zannier e Emanuela Sesti per una collettiva all’Alinari Image Museum.
His works have gone on show in over 40 exhibitions in Trieste, Milan, Rome, Vienna, Berlin, Zurich, New York and are part of private and public collections.
Suoi lavori sono stati esposti in oltre 50 mostre a Trieste, Milano, Roma, Vienna, Berlino, Zurigo e New York, e fanno parte di collezioni pubbliche e private.
Since 2018 his work is part of the prestigious Polaroid Collection [WestLicht, Wien] and of the archives of Fratelli Alinari Fondazione per la Storia della Fotografia [Florence, Italy].
Dal 2018 il suo lavoro è parte della prestigiosa Polaroid Collection [WestLicht, Vienna] e dell’archivio Fratelli Alinari Fondazione per la Storia della Fotografia [Firenze, Italia].
