Human Catastrophe

Substitute to Law of conservation of motion

Think again about Human catastrophe in detail, it is that ‘huge group of people’ lose home and are propelled into ‘narrow space’ by the disaster mentioned above. The most worried and terrible thing of Natural disasters or wars, terrorism is secondary disaster, Human catastrophe. It eliminates house that people live in stable, makes the refugees and even threaten other people living commonplace. And then the group of homeless might stay in narrow area, it could be changed to slum and there would exist a criminal who exploited the panic situation. These people are massive, get panicked and they are moving constantly to find a place to survive.

So we tried to substitute the two features (Massive group of people, Unpredictable direction of refugees) for ‘momentum’ which used in physics. The momentum is expressed by the mass(m) and velocity(v). Let’s substitute ‘Massive group of refugees’ for ‘m’ and ‘Moving velocity to find new home’ for ‘v’. Then refugees(Human Catastrophe) can be considered the momentum mv, and our mission is to make the momentum as close to zero causing various problems. But since the momentum with refugees is preserved by the law of conservation of motion, it should share the momentum by the collision with other objects. Also we need to make velocity almost zero because of its large mass. So we need some building which has large mass that can take in refugee’s momentum. And that will be an inelastic collision. However, this building is followed by a number of constraints.

PROCESS OF INELASTIC COLLISION

Constraints

1)Massive group of people 2)Unpredictable direction of refugees. This Human Catastrophe with two features is going to occur over and over again, so it is duty of our humanity to prepare for this Catastrophe.

First, the building is not only simply increases the mass. If the building expands widely, we should use the large space for unpredictable disasters. Besides, it could make large area to slum. So we have first constraints that the building must have not only small space but also large mass. We must also not only consider the momentum but also ‘time’(t). Human Catastrophe doesn’t occur gradually. It is massive momentum that occurs by sudden disaster. In physics, momentum is equal to the impulse that multiplication of Force (F) and Time (t). Momentum generated in a short time has a huge Force. So we defined again momentum to impulse. The influence by refugees occurred can be defined F and the time that stay in the building can be defined t. If refugee occur and come to the building, it must receive the Force (F) at one time. As time goes by, let the people who become stable get out, then the Force is reduced and the building can get smaller gradually. Likewise, building performs a little task usual time. And it needs to get biggerin short time to receive refugee’s impact also needs to get smaller gradually when they become stable.

Hot-air balloon Unit 1) 2) 3) 4) 5)

It is normally folded but it can be increased through the heat and air injection. It can be made only by air and heat cut off again as usual state. One household can live in one hot-air balloon unit. When floating a balloon in the air, it is possible to remove a significant dead load. We can quickly put in and out the Unit to adjust the number of hot-air balloon.

Considering above five functions, the hot-air balloon can be a key concept to accept Human catastrophe. In conclusion, our building shape has to become big in short time and also become small gradually at disaster situation. But in normal state, it just performs disaster management center. We found the idea which can perform above every function. It is Hot-air Balloon. It’s one unit. The list is that the hot-air balloon how to perform certain functions.

Air Balloon Unit !

It can accommodate more people per the horizontal unit of area and also it can be prevented from the surrounding area to be slumed.

1Day Process Transforming

Universial Solution

We made a building by hot-air balloon as follows. First, envelope is air film structure and it is not stretched at normal state. When refugees occur, air film consisting of several layers of air tubes are blow up by injection of air and heat. This is connected with wire that involved electricity line and air conditioner duct and it opened together. At the same time, 9 Luffing tower cranes increase themselves and build deck plate which people can walk. Finally, hot-air balloons (stored at 4~6 floor) are launched on the roof. It will be connected with electric wire and become to shelter. This process has to be done quickly. It is designed by tower cranes and hot-air balloon which can be installed within 24 hours. We call it a 1day process.

One skyscraper cannot be a solution itself to Human Catastrophe. This sky scraper needs to be placed on the earth everywhere. Then they have to constitute disaster management network and prepare to Human Catastrophe. Looking at the process, people come to the nearest skyscraper in the disaster area. Through this network over received skyscraper can distribute to other skyscraper, it could prevent excess acceptance of a skyscraper and be more quickly to stabilize the refugees

#01 What you want? Before starting project, I thought this. "What is the best library for the publc?" And I got the answer. This answer is "Each people's needs are not same". So I decided that put all of library space conditions in the one building.

#02 Various Posibilities by overlapping I was attracted the posibility of overlapping. If I overlap each of the various patterned skin, materials, I could get unexpected more various space conditions and regulate space opacity, density, atmosphere in the one building.

#03 Choosing my place You can have many options of circulation. So you can choice your favorite reading rooms, space. In this case, trip that choosing one's place is occured. Finally, you can get a sense of place in this building.

#04 Overlapping each surface I adopted some logic that zoning the program, making space atmosphere. This is a division of bright & active space, dim & silent space. And this is made by surface's patterns and materials.

FINAL MODEL Final model was made by metal board and film paper. First, I made 3d modeling and made unfolded plan. Next, cut by knife cutting machine and finallym assembled each part. I made all of structure 3d modeling. So all of structure is included inside of model.

55

Making space condition by overlapping surfaces

Making atmosphere by various patterns

Surfaces can divide space condition and program by overlapping. Each surface has another materials. In overlapping process, I have regulated space density and transparency by material.

Each space and program have a well matched light condition. Light condition is made by overlapping various patterns. So you can always select an optimum reading room.

Assigning various circulation options You can have many options of circulation. So you can choice your favorite reading rooms, space. In this case, trip that choosing one's place is occured. Finally, you can get a sense of place in this building.

Program zoning by each surface Each surface can perform program zoning. More deap inside to the buiding space, there are more silent and dimmer space. But the other way of building space, there are more energetic space more bright open space.

Prologue Baltic states get independence with nonviolence protest. It showed just how effctive nonviolent protest can be. We want to make Memorial which remind people that moment like a time machine. we want that they can see the moment beyond it. Remembering is thinking from specific part of moment. we set human chain & song of freedom as part. The parallel two mirrors reflect one people infinitely. The water which not stop but flow-ahead make sound. each thing can reflect human chain& song of freedom.

Density

It was not easy for baltic states to make human chain because they had few people than other similar size nations and traffic was not developed well. Including public bus, many cars was too busy to move people. Dispite of military threat of Soviet Union, they finally gather together at appointed time pm 7:00 and sing song of freedom. How much time marched on while all people go back home ?

Making 'Void tube' and inserting patterns

All of floors have void variation and irregular forms. As a result this building has not 'Standard floor' and occures some deadspace. So I adopted 'Shared floor' on the 5F, 18F. 'Shared floor' is shared public program in the building for example cafe, conference room, health area, library. So other floors have sufficient area.

CHAMELEON 'VOID TUBE' Technology & Digital materiality are very important motive in this project. So madia factor is adopted. 'Void tube' is this ! Between two layerd glasses on the void tube, LED light is inserted. So 'Void tube' is trasformed various color likes chameleon. These color is controled by many variable factors.

18F Rest Area 'Void tube' gives buliding members the feeling of solidarity. Void tube is used to public, circulation, rest areas. In the urban scale, void tube interact to pedestrian, urban scenery.

15F Shared Floor 8F, 15F floor are used to 'Shared floor'. Shared floor is used to bulding member's welfare, rest.

7F Office 'Void tube' makes problem of lacking floor area. But this problem is supplemented by 'Shared floor'. All of welfare, public uses are located in shared floor. As a result, this building's available area is same as grid system office.

1F Public Area Low floor areas are used to public area. There are Commercial area, garden, exhibition area and cafeteria.

FINAL MODEL All of skin and void tube was made by 3d diagonal surfaces. So I delicately made 3d modeling data. And I made unfolded plan for all of 3d diagonal surfaces by rhinoceroes. Finally I made acrylic model parts by laser cutting machine and assembled all of parts.

MATERIAL FABRIC

Sewing of architectural fabric MASS SURFACE PLAN

Project main subject is sewing of architectural fabric. I substitute fashion design process for architecture design process. Many architecture raw materials, for example glass, steel frame and various light structure are expressed to architectural fabric. I make building form by ovelapping surface that made from architectural fabric. this process is looked like that sewing fabric in fashion design. So I implement the new architecture design process that not mass design base. this building form is made by surface base. the massless architecture.

Among many of the modern technologies, 3d printing is very interesting and important technology in the contemporary architecture. 3d printing architecture model give us design inspiration, space information and form possibilities by very easy process. I checked my design, structure and space by the 3d printing models. I repeated this process. Printing... confirm... printing... confirm...printing... Finally, I got this design.

CONTROL SPACE RELATIONS BY CURVED LINE I suggested "Curved line" as mediation factor. This factor can control relation of program, units in the housing complex. For example, connection, seperation, opening degree about each territory.

08 CURVE AS MEDIUM

Water saving

Reduce running cost

None motorized works

Smart network

Easy repair

Provent ground erosion

Global physical and economic water scarcity is serious. So we are many effort for the water saving. But out of our sight, too much water is leacked out from the watermain pipe. Besides, much construction cost is added. In worst case, ground erosion is happened. We propose "the smart water main infra"
