approximately 20% of Tennessee State University graduates pursue post-baccalaureate study at some of the nation’s most prestigious institutions, further compounding their indebtedness with additional loans.

If Tennessee State University is to reverse this trend of over reliance on loans, and remain competitive in the kinds of financial aid packages it offers, the university must significantly enhance its capability to provide outright scholarships. Presently, the dramatic disparity between student loans and scholarships makes a profound statement about the importance of raising scholarship support for Tennessee State University students.

Traditionally, Tennessee State University’s mission has compelled the university to provide the

opportunity for a quality education to capable young men and women irrespective of their economic background. The university remains committed to this ideal and aspires to offer its students a unique educational experience free from financial hardships or serious indebtedness. To accomplish this goal, the university is endeavoring to raise funds to enhance its scholarship program and expand the scholarship base. Increased resources will allow for additional need-based scholarships, guaranteeing Tennessee State University’s ability to offer financial assistance to students worthy of receiving a top notch education.

Scholarships fuel student’s hopes and aspirations. By providing these vital resources to its students, Tennessee State University will continue its legacy of making success stories possible.

The Case for Scholarship Support

T

ennessee State University is a University of choice for academically strong and well-prepared students, representing diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Tennessee State University was ranked #17 among the top 50 colleges and universities for African-Americans in the September 2006 issue of Black Enterprise Magazine. Tennessee State University has also been listed as a top U.S. college or university by U.S. News and World Report for the past 10 years. Across the country, academic merit is increasingly replacing financial need as the primary determinant for the awarding of scholarships from most state grant programs. States are increasing their spending on meritbased aid, and are using these resources to compete for high-achieving students. Following the national trend, more

Tennessee State University students are requiring assistance from the university to cover their unmet financial needs. Specifically, students are looking to the university for more need-based scholarships. support as part of its financial package. Tennessee State University’s ability to meet the demand for need-based scholarships depends on the strength of its scholarship base. While the current pool for student scholarships totals $1 million, an annual pool of $7 million is needed to meet the demand. A pool of this size will allow the University

to offer scholarships to an additional 650 students per year.

For the 2007-2008 academic year, tuition, fees, room and board will total $10,088 for in-state students and $20,364 for out-of-state students. By any objective measure, these costs are considerably less than comparable private institutions. In fact, Tennessee State University is considered one of the country’s best buys. Yet, approximately 70% of the undergraduate student body received financial aid; 80% of the total financial aid given was in the form of loans. The implications of these figures are significant, and are at the very core of the university’s need. Because of the limited availability of need-based awards and academic scholarships, Tennessee State University’s students are relying heavily on loans to finance their education. The net impact of this borrowing is that 51% of Tennessee State University students are graduating with long-term debt obligations estimated at $45,000 per student. The debt issue is further magnified when one considers that Continued on back page

Fuel students’ hopes and aspirations through scholarship support Dear Donors and Friends,

Tennessee State University finds itself in a unique position to touch thousands of students and is embarking on initiatives that will support its transformation into a world-class institution of higher learning attracting the best and brightest students, top faculty, research opportunities and key partnerships. In order to continue making a difference in the lives of students, private donations and philanthropic leadership are a vital part in making this happen.

If Tennessee State is to remain competitive with other colleges and universities in recruiting and maintaining highly qualified students, it must offer substantial scholarship support as part of its financial package. Tennessee State’s ability to meet the demand for need-based scholarships depends on the strength of its scholarship base. While the current pool for student scholarships totals $1 million, an annual pool of $7 million is needed to meet the demand. A pool of this size will allow the university to offer scholarships to an additional 650 students per year.

Traditionally, Tennessee State University’s mission has compelled the University to provide the opportunity for a quality education to capable young men and women irrespective of their economic background. The University remains committed to this ideal and aspires to offer its students a unique educational experience free from financial hardships or serious indebtedness. Within these pages, you will read student testimonials about what receiving scholarship support has meant to them in their educational journeys. Scholarships fuel students’ hopes and aspirations. By providing these vital resources to its students, Tennessee State University will continue its legacy of making success stories possible. Sincerely,

Melvin N. Johnson President Tennessee State University

Dear Friends:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Tennessee State University Foundation, it is my pleasure to present the 2006-2007 Annual Update Report.

Within these pages you will find evidence of an organization that has been reinvented and reinvigorated. Under new leadership, the Foundation has established new fundraising standards that call for a clear focus on transparency, quality, efficiency and stewardship. With a cohesive team of fundraising professionals and committed volunteers, we are ensuring that gifts to the institution are managed wisely and donors have the utmost confidence in their generosity.

These efforts have already proven fruitful. During 2006-2007, the Foundation successfully raised $574,063 for much needed scholarships for deserving students, exceeding the previous year’s total by $109,259. In addition, the Foundation Board has expanded to include eight new members, thereby broadening our spheres of influence within the community and increasing our cultivation opportunities.

This is a critical time in the university’s history as we engage in several long-range transformational planning processes. Once complete, the Tennessee State University Foundation will play a vital role in providing the resources needed to put those plans into action. I hope we can count on your continued support as we move forward to create a glorious future for Tennessee State University. Sincerely,

Spencer Wiggins Chairman Tennessee State University Foundation

Hurricane Katrina victim finds refuge at Tennessee State University

It has been two years since Tierra Boyd’s life was forever changed by the unprecedented devastation of Hurricane Katrina. When the hurricane hit, Tennessee State University immediately mobilized its resources to aid those in need – and Boyd was among those fortunate students. Student Voices - Scholarship Recipients Say Thanks

“When this fall semester began, I was stressed because I did not have the money to pay for school and knew that it would take a lot for me to get through this semester. I stepped out on pure faith, not hoping to get any money to pay for school, but to bite the bullet and make the necessary sacrifices to pay out of my pocket for this last leg of my education. When I looked at my account and saw the scholarship, I could not help but cry and say, “thank you,” to God and to whomever saw fit to bless me with this well-needed gift.” - Alena Evans “Early in the semester I ran into some financial trouble when it was time to pay for school. Though my education is an extremely important aspect of my life, I had absolutely no idea where the tuition money was coming from. Luckily I didn’t have to worry about my problem for too long. Because of your gracious generosity, I was granted a zero balance and the subsequent chance to continue pursuing my education.” - Antonio Benton “Being grateful is one of the most important feelings I had after receiving the news that I was awarded a scholarship. As a student you face many obstacles that give you thoughts about the decisions you make every day, but we have come to the conclusion that every once in a while a person needs that extra push that gives them the drive to want to succeed. Even though we all know that college life isn’t the easiest journey; we do know that knowledge is power. When times get hard and the road gets tough its things like this that eases your mind and makes you want to push forward. Knowing that the TSU Foundation Board of Trustees wants to assist me to further my life really gives me hope for the future.” - LaQuinta Stevenson FOUNDATION UPDATE

While the Office of Alumni Relations accepted monetary donations, the TSU Pre-Alumni Council collected food and clothing, and in keeping with its primary mission, TSU became a refuge for Boyd, along with FOUNDATION UPDATE

FOUNDATION UPDATE

Sincerely,

Spencer Wiggins Chairman Tennessee State University Foundation

approximately 20% of Tennessee State University graduates pursue post-baccalaureate study at some of the nation’s most prestigious institutions, further compounding their indebtedness with additional loans.

The university remains committed to this ideal and aspires to offer its students a unique educational experience free from financial hardships or serious indebtedness. To accomplish this goal, the university is endeavoring to raise funds to enhance its scholarship program and expand the scholarship base. Increased resources will allow for additional need-based scholarships, guaranteeing Tennessee State University’s ability to offer financial assistance to students worthy of receiving a top notch education.

ennessee State University is a University of choice for academically strong and well-prepared students, representing diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Following the national trend, more

to offer scholarships to an additional 650 students per year.
