TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY
ABOUT THE TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION The Tennessee State University Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization established in 1970 with the sole mission to promote and support literary, scientific, educational, scholarship, research, charitable and development purposes and goals at the university. The foundation is governed by an independent board of trustees comprised of alumni, business and community leaders who have an affection for TSU and are committed to its vision for the future. The responsibility of the board is to acquire, manage and administer foundation funds to support the university's fundraising priorities. The TSU Foundation adheres to all FASB and IRS standards. The foundation is audited annually by the state of Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury as a component unit of Tennessee State University.
THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING Tennessee State University is one of the top public historically black universities in the nation and is respected around the world. For it to remain so, it will require concerted and unwavering efforts on many fronts. Private giving is critical to our effectiveness and competitiveness as we educate future generations. Today, only 27 percent of the university's annual budget comes from state funding. The university cannot create a margin of excellence without private contributions. Preparing students to thrive in an increasingly competitive and global economy is imperative. And it starts by recruiting the best, most deserving faculty and students, and providing them with the resources they need to succeed. Private support keeps tuition affordable and reasonable for our students. You can help build upon TSU's distinction with a gift that will support excellence and keep future generations competitive in the global marketplace.

WAYS TO GIVE There are many ways to give to TSU. Whether
I'm interested in becoming a nurse because I enjoy helping and changing the lives of others. I would once again like to thank you for your support in assisting me with college. ~ Devyn Collins, Matteson, IL
your gift qualifies as an annual, endowed or planned gift, each type of gift makes an impact on current as well as future students and faculty. • Annual Gifts - Annual gifts offer a unique opportunity for alumni, parents and friends to ensure the continued success of the university. Through annual gifts, you may choose to designate your support for student scholarships or other important university needs. • Endowed Gifts - The principal of an endowed fund is never spent. It is invested and the earnings are used to fulfill the purpose(s) for which the fund was created. Funds may be created for scholarships, fellowships, lectureships, research, professorships, library acquisitions, academic chairs, scientific and technical equipment or capital improvements. • Planned Gifts - Careful estate planning yields special advantages for donors and their heirs while enabling them to support the important work of TSU in a significant and lasting way.
