We are proud to be presenting David Shapiro with our CHAMPION OF MENTORING Award at the Journey to 30 Symposium & Celebration this Fall. Join us as we recognize David for his incalculable and lasting impact on the field of mentoring.
David Shapiro, former Mass Mentoring Partnership CEO and MENTOR National CEO, will be departing after almost two decades in the mentoring movement to lead the YMCA of Greater Boston as its 14th President and CEO. David’s legacy can be felt all across the country, as he poured his energy and passion into expanding and strengthening positive and supportive youth-adult relationships.
David served as CEO of Mass Mentoring Partnership from 2004 – 2011, and his list of accomplishments at MMP is singularly impressive. During his tenure, MMP launched Mentoring Night at Fenway Park, the Highland Street AmeriCorps Ambassadors of Mentoring, Mass Mentoring Counts, and the Bill Russell Mentoring Grants Program. At MENTOR, among his many accomplishments, he partnered with global brands to elevate awareness of mentoring; he worked extensively with the Obama Foundation to center mentoring through My Brother’s Keeper; in 2014, MENTOR was selected by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to establish and lead the National Mentoring Resource Center; and he expanded MENTOR’s footprint by growing the affiliate network to 24, with several more in the final stages of development.
Mass Mentoring Partnership offers virtual and in-person training and networking events to develop and build the capacity of high-quality youth-serving programs. We provide research-based resources and nationally recognized practices to promote positive outcomes for youth.

MMP’s office of Government Relations and Public Policy advocates for federal and state funding for mentoring, as well as legislation and policies that support young people and their families. Working closely with legislators, mentoring organizations, and friends, MMP has successfully advocated for the state Mentoring Matching Grants (MMG) line item since 2000.
Mentoring Matching Grant funding is the only state investment solely dedicated to expanding youth mentoring in Massachusetts, and its primary goal is to increase the number of high-quality mentoring matches in the state. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, through the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, provides grants to qualifying mentoring Programs across the Commonwealth; MMP distributes the grants which are matched 1:1 by the participating programs. These grants make a public investment in mentoring programs, as well as leverage private dollars on behalf of youth.
The Hall of Flags in the Massachusetts State House is filled with mentoring advocates at Youth Mentoring Day. Youth Mentoring Day draws state legislators, policy-makers, funders, young people, and mentoring and youth-serving organizations from across the state to raise awareness of the impact of mentoring and to advocate for the Mentoring Matching Grants line item.
Our 2022 Legislative Champions, Rep. Patricia Duffy and Sen. Brendan Crighton, led the effort in the Massachusetts State Legislature to secure $1.5 million in funding for the Mentoring Matching Grants line item in Fiscal Year 2023.
Mass Mentoring Partnership is proud to announce that the 2023 Fiscal Year budget passed in the Massachusetts legislature with $1.5 million earmarked for the Mentoring Matching Grant line item. This represents an increase of $300,000 over last year’s budget. This is also a powerful recognition of the critical role mentoring relationships play in the lives of young people, and an acknowledgment of the vital role mentoring will play in a fair and equitable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
MMP would like to thank the following Legislators for their support!

On June 22, 2022, we presented the enlightening results of the 2022 Mass Mentoring Counts survey. Since its beginning in 2006, this biennial survey has provided a snapshot of the state of structured mentoring programs in Massachusetts. This year’s study focuses on the impact that the COVID 19 pandemic has had on mentoring relationships in the Commonwealth, and it provides a detailed look into how the pandemic has affected structured mentoring programs–their staff, their mentors, the young people they serve, and their financial security. Click here to view the Mass Mentoring Counts 2022 Final Report.
In addition to providing detailed demographic information on youth served during the last two years, the report also offered a glimpse into what mentoring programs expect to see in the next two years.
