A trailblazer of alt-country, a protest singer of fiery commitment, a songwriter of towering ability—Steve Earle is an artist of expansive talents. A CLASSIC (re)MADE AT MASS MoCA In 2015, Lucinda Childs, one of the most celebrated choreographers of the modern era, revives her seminal 1983 collaboration with composer John Adams and architect Frank Gehry. During an extended artistic residency, Childs remounts Available Light, which features an updated version of Gehry’s striking set. Three intimate, work-in-progress presentations showcase the reimagined work. Q+A with presenters to follow each performance

SOUND OF THE PAST, VOICE OF THE FUTURE Billie Holiday comparisons are coming thick and fast for throwback chanteuse Kat Edmonson. The Boston Globe called her 2012 release, Way Down Low, “one of the greatest vocal albums I’ve ever heard.” Her 2014 follow-up, The Big Picture, confirms it was no fluke: she is one of today’s most exciting and original singers, retro but completely of the moment, a dazzling talent with a voice that’s impossible to forget. ENTERTAINING DOUBTS Fallen heroes, collapsed economies, politics, sin, and doomsday predictions —Jim Shaw’s work mines the essentials of American cultural detritus. Large-scale paintings on theatrical scrim, video, sculpture, and a new commission—works that feature characters such as Barbara Bush, 20th-century religious prophet Aleister Crowley, and Dan Quayle—remind us that the end is near and that reality is more absurd than plausible. FANG LIJUN A fierce observer of contemporary culture and politics, Fang Lijun was a founding protagonist of the pivotal Cynical Realist movement in post-Tiananmen China. Fang’s first major solo exhibition in the U.S., the show features a vast suite of work spanning nearly four decades—from resplendent, billboard-sized paintings, to rarely-seen ink drawings, to 20’ high woodcuts and a new ensemble of topographical sculpture rendered in transparent porcelain. MASS MoCA’s signature football field-sized Building 5 will be dramatically reconfigured to accommodate this remarkable range of work. Members’ opening reception with the artist
