Robert Shaw

CHIEF JUDGE

Robert Shaw is a Founding Director Daly & Shaw Building Pty Ltd (along with Mick Daly), Director Daly & Shaw Pty Ltd, Western Ladders Pty Ltd, Western Timbers Pty Ltd, Evolution Custom Builds+Extensions+Renovations. Robert has worked for himself since finishing a carpentry trade certificate in NSW when he was 21 since then has built five extremely successful business showing outstanding Entrepreneur skills. In 2003 Robert joined Master Builders WA Housing Council in 2004 He became Chair of the housing Council for seven years. Robert then became State President in 2011 of Master Builders WA serving a 3-year term. At the same time severed a 4-year term as President of Netball WA loving the challenge of time management while adding value using skills from the privet sector for the benefit of not-for-profit organizations. Current Director of Master Builders Australia. 2014 Current Chair of National Economic & Productivity Committee 2021. Chair of the National Residential Builders council. 2015-2020 Current Director of Master Builders WA 2005. Current head judge for Master Builders WA. President of Netball Australia. 2016-2019

Charlie Baggetta

REGIONAL JUDGE

Charlie started in the Building Industry in 1962 doing a five-year apprenticeship in Carpentry & Joinery. On completion of his apprenticeship, he worked in both Residential and Commercial sector of the industry. After gaining experience, he commenced studying for his Building Registration Certificate. He started his own Building Company, Baggetta Builders in the Southwest in 1980, and is still active in the Company operations. Charlie is now a life member of the Master Builders Association and has held a membership since 1980.

Jane Arnolda

Currently working at Structerre Consulting as the National Engineering Manager, Jane has been a part of the building industry for close to 15 years now. The Building Industry is something Jane is really passionate about, being fortunate enough to be a co-opted member of the housing council and a long-standing member of MBA. After winning the 2020 Inaugural Women Building Australia Award, Jane was delighted when MBA asked me to sit on their judging panel this year. “After years of attending the awards as a guest, it was great to finally see behind the scenes and have insight into how the judging panel operates. The calibre of nominees was extremely high, which really is a testament to the standards we are achieving as a building industry in WA.”

Kristin Back

Kristin started his career in residential construction at the age of 18. As a bricklayer, Kristin worked for a major residential home builder for five years as a Site Supervisor before being promoted to Site Manager. Kristin has been with Mapel Building since 2007, originally in the role of Site Supervisor before moving on to become Mapel’s Construction Manager in 2008 and General Manager in 2012, and a Registered Builder since 2010. Today, Kristin oversees the progression of all projects. He’s Mapel’s go-to person to liaise with clients and enjoys engaging with and managing people and the commercial processes. Between running Mapel Building Kristin also finds time to train for triathlons. A husband, father of three, grandparent and an aspiring athlete, he completed his first solo Half Iron Man in 2019 and starts most of his days with long training runs, swims, or bike rides. Kristin’s extensive background in the industry and love of the job makes him a valuable member of the Mapel team.

Lorenzo Cassiani

Originally Born in Canada, Lorenzo migrated to Australia in 2006. Having a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and prior to founding Cassari, Lorenzo worked for various commercial construction companies in Canada and Perth. In 2010, Lorenzo alongside his brother-in-law formed Cassari. Lorenzo has been a judge in the Master Builders Awards for over 7 years.

Warren Kerr

Over the past 35 years, Warren has specialised in the planning and design of major health facilities. In addition to his formal qualifications in architecture, Warren has a Masters’ Degree in health administration and a post-graduate diploma in project facilitation. Warren also maintains an active interest in teaching and research as an Adjunct Professor at UWA and as a member of the Australian Health Design Council and the International Union of Architects Public Health Group. Warren is a former State and National President of the Australian Institute of Architects and in 2009 was appointed as a member of the Order of Australia for his services to architecture.

Robert Johnson

Rob is a structural engineer and, prior to his recent retirement, spent the last 31 years of his 45-year career as engineer, Director and Chairman at BG&E Pty Limited (previously Bruechle Gilchrist and Evans), during which time the company expanded from 20 to 300 staff in 8 office locations. Rob’s experience extends to a wide range of structures, large and small, including buildings in Dubai, Doha, London, and Chicago. Rob has served various roles on committees for Engineers Australia and the University of Western Australia and is a Fellow of Engineers Australia.

Anthony Lumbaca

As a registered Building Practitioner, Anthony is currently active in both the commercial and residential sectors, with specialities in boutique residential projects such as custom homes, apartments and mixed-use developments, and commercial projects such as industrial, medical, cinemas, restaurants, churches, agedcare, and large-scale commercial refurbishments. “It was a great pleasure to be an Official Judge for MBAWA for this year’s Construction Awards. As a passionate member of the building community, this experience allows me to give back to the industry, as well as provide recognition to some well-deserved organisations and individuals.” This year Anthony saw some very exciting commercial projects, adding value to our great city. One thing that really resonated with Anthony was the passion of the individuals behind these projects. Their level of pride and enthusiasm is to be commended.

Richard Machell

Richard is a Registered and Chartered Builder and principal of Prescient Consulting, having 45 years of experience in the Construction industry gained at all levels from tradesman to General Manager of Architectural and Construction Companies in WA, SA, and NT, and teaches in construction courses at tertiary level in WA. Richard specialises in commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential works, including the preparation of expert witness reports into construction issues and the resolution of disputes by Arbitration, Mediation, Expert Determination and Adjudication.

Prav Mepani

Prav has worked within the Construction industry for over 19 years, primarily managing his own Construction companies, providing him with vast combined industry experience gained from the UK, in WA and throughout Interstate Australia. This experience has allowed Prav to undertake many technical and challenging projects. Prav’s companies and approach being very diverse, has allowed him to successfully deliver many projects being High-End Residential Homes, Multi-Level Apartments including Mixed use and Award winning Commercial & Industrial in the private and government sectors. Prav continues to commit his time to undertaking the MBA Judges role, which he has thoroughly enjoyed being a part of and hopes to continue for many years to come. Prav is also an elect member on the Commercial Construction Council Committee, focusing on industry improvements for the better of the industry.

Rod Mollett

Rod is a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects and was appointed as a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia for his service to architecture in 2014. Rod worked for the practice of Silver Thomas Hanley for more than 40 years and as a practice director for 25 years. Rod has also served on the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) WA Chapter Council, AIA National Council, the Architects Board of WA (ABWA) and the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) in various roles, including as AIA Chapter President, Chair of the Architects Board of WA, and Chair of the Accreditation Council of Australia. Rod continues to practice architecture as a sole practitioner and maintains his relationship with the AIA as a Senior Counsellor and with the ABWA assisting with the registration process.

James Prattent

James has over 15 years’ experience in both client and contractor roles across regional and metropolitan WA. Having graduated from Curtin University, he has worked in Perth for many years delivering a vast array of projects across multiple market sectors in both client and contractor roles. James’ professional attitude and standards are a key part of driving quality projects across WA. James holds a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management and Economics, is a registered builder and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and currently runs the ADCO Constructions WA business.

Kevin Sale

Kevin Sale has held senior positions in major Perth companies building volume housing and unit developments both in the metropolitan and regional areas. Kevin’s involvement with Master Builders has been eight years on the Safety Council followed by time as the Chair of Housing and a member of both Council and Executive Committees. Kevin is a past President of the Master Builders Association.

Glenn Smith

Commencing in the construction industry in 1989 as a roof carpenter Glenn progressed into mining construction with his first project being the construction of the new crushing plant for BGC at their Lakes Quarry. These mining works took Glenn to numerous places within WA, to NSW and a 2-year stint in 1994-1995 in what was then called Irian Jaya (now West Papua). The project was to construct the world’s largest SAG mill for Freeport Mc McMoran, an eye opener & amazing opportunity for a young man in his mid-twenties. Glenn has been fortunate through his construction career to date to have worked across pretty much all facets of the industry. From heavy construction, commercial and residential/development work. Glenn returned back from working away in 1999 and immediately commenced by Building Diploma at Leederville TAFE and on completion of that commenced business studies at Curtin Business School & builders’ registration as it was known then. Today Glenn is the sole director of Q Group WA and work across all 3 areas of construction, that being boutique Homes, Developments/Commercial and high-end maintenance. Most recent maintenance project has seen us spend several weeks working on a hangar at Karratha airport. Glenn takes great pride in being a builder and he believes we have a fantastic construction industry in WA, and we produce high quality buildings across all areas & it has been a genuine pleasure judging and see the great outcomes many of our commercial builders have achieved.
