Sarah Allender | TrueNorth Risk Solutions, Cedar Rapids, IA
Sarah Allender has over a decade of experience in working with construction and general industry clients. She enjoys working with clients on enhancing their current safety culture and working with leadership on effectively communicating safety. Sarah is the president of the ASSP-NE Iowa Chapter, serves on planning committees for the Iowa Women in Safety and Hawkeye on Safety conferences and is an adjunct professor at Kirkwood Community College.

Brandon began his career as a card-carrying member of the Carpenter’s Local Union #106 and was previously employed with an ENR Top Specialty Contractor where he worked on the site of Microsoft’s large Data Center project in Des Moines. This opportunity allowed him to look at construction project safety from a different perspective, all the while providing him knowledge growth of “whole-project” safety. Brandon now helps to provide a well-rounded safety-mentality to job sites and provides the CSSI team with a “field perspective” while delivering a wide array of services related to inspections, site visits and employee education. In addition to being a certified American Red Cross Instructor for First Aid/CPR/AED, Brandon has earned certificates from the National Safety Council that include Specialist in Safety & Health and Advanced Safety as well as being a certified equipment instructor through the IVES Training Group.

Luke Borlee | United Rentals, Inc. – Ft. Myers, FL
Luke has been with United Rentals for over 14 years in various roles within safety, focusing on customer training. In his current role, he helps safetyconscious companies obtain and track employee safety certifications. Luke puts his Bachelors in Communications to use, presenting on equipment safe use and jobsite safety. He is a Certified Master Instructor on forklifts, mobile elevated work platforms, earth moving equipment, fall protection and more. Luke is also an 18-year USAF vet. While serving, he instructed Airmen on fall protection and confined space entry, earning an Associates in Aviation Maintenance & Technology.

Tim has over 30 years’ experience working with software development, artificial intelligence development, safety metric indicator and collection management. Tim has been working with leading-edge development for the past 20 years in enterprise safety management systems, behavioral safety, artificial intelligence, analytic development and predictive analytics. Tim has spent the past five years focusing on leading international development for worldwide leaders in class organizational reliability analytics.

Aaron Brown | TrueNorth Construction Speciality Group,Cedar Rapids, IA
Aaron began his insurance career at age 17 working for an insurance agency in Anderson, Indiana. Upon graduating from college, Aaron relocated to Iowa to pursue an opportunity in commercial insurance. While working in the industry, he quickly found a passion for working alongside contractors, and built a special niche helping and educating contractors in higher hazard industries with multi-state operations. Aaron now works with contractors all over the country assisting with insurance coverage analysis, claims issues, EMR Cost Containment, and building long term strategic plans for risk management and safety. He has a very unique, “outside of the box” way of thinking while maintaining strict documented processes that are contractor specific, and built by the TrueNorth-Construction Specialty Group. Aaron earned his BS on Political Science from Purdue University.
Chris Downs | Iowa OSHA – Des Moines, IA
Chris has been a safety and health consultant with Iowa OSHA Consultation & Education since 2014. He travels the state of Iowa providing compliance assistance and education to employers in all industries so that they can take charge of eliminating workplace hazards and to minimize risk to their employees. He is a 10-year Navy combat veteran with deployments around the world and experience onboard nuclear submarines, where he fulfilled safety responsibilities. Continuous improvement of safety and health management systems was not only mandatory, it was necessary for the successful completion of missions and to ensure that everyone on the team returned home to their families.

Jerry Eslick | Professional Rescue Innovations – Adel, IA
Jerry is a thirty-six-year veteran in fire service and recently retired from the West Des Moines Fire Department as the Deputy Chief of Training. He is currently a Field Staff Instructor for the Fire Service Training Bureau and owner/instructor for Professional Rescue Innovations. Jerry began his career in the Air Force as an ARFF firefighter. After 4 years of active duty, he and his wife came back to Iowa to raise a family. At that time, he joined the Des Moines Fire Department and within eight years was in charge of the training department. He left the Des Moines Fire Department for the opportunity to be the Chief of Fort Dodge, Iowa. Another career change came with the new position on the West Des Moines Fire Department where he retired after 17 years of service. He retired after twenty-one years of service from the Air National Guard in Des Moines. In 2008, Jerry received the Iowa Society of Fire Service Instructor’s “Instructor of the Year Award”. As a result of developing Professional Rescue Innovations, Jerry has been teaching fire/rescue related programs to fire departments in the Midwest as well as safety programs focused on industry needs for the past 23 years.

John Hamilton | BrandSafway – Chicago, IL
John has over 20 years of construction and safety compliance experience and has been with BrandSafway for 10 years. He is a CHST, is an Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer and a Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) 46 trainer. As a Regional EHS Manager for BrandSafway he supports the operation teams throughout different geographic areas of the country. John focuses on influencing culture change through relationship building with the field level employees through management. Safety is his passion, and he has embraced safety as truly being a culture and core value of his, not just a word.
Corey Hopkins | Dekra – Spencer, IA
Corey was born and raised in Sanborn, Iowa. He attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he graduated in 1992 with a BA in Business Management and a minor in Psychology. He has wide array of work experiences, ranging from sales and support of automated liquid fertilizer equipment to supervising a crew at a soybean processing plant. His safety career began in 1999, when he was tabbed as the Compliance Coordinator at a soybean processing facility in Sheldon, Iowa. During his 21+ years of safety experience, Corey has held safety leadership positions at a hamburger production facility, a manufacturing plant, and an multi location agricultural company. He has valuable experience in hazard recognition, risk assessment, incident investigation (including root cause analysis), and behavioral safety. Corey’s strong belief in the effectiveness of proactive safety cultures has shaped his career and allowed him to improve the cultures of all the companies he has worked with through the years. He has been a speaker at many safety conferences through the years on many different safety topics. His passion is evident to anyone attending one of his seminars.

Ryan is an experienced Director of Environmental Health & Safety with a demonstrated history of working in the agriculture industry. Skilled in environmental awareness, agronomy and grain operations, operations management, and risk management. Ryan thrives as a strong operations and leadership professional with a Master’s degree focused in Educational Leadership and Administration from Iowa State University.
James (JJ) Jenkins | Construction Infection Control Training Institute – Fort Mill, SC
James (JJ) is an Industrial Hygienist, the Owner of Jenkins Risk Management, LLC and the CEO of The Construction Infection Control Training Institute (CICTI). He has a B.S. in Environmental Sciences from the Evergreen State College and completed the Masters of Science in Public Health Program in Industrial Hygiene at the University of South Carolina. JJ has had the opportunity to provide ICRA consulting on hundreds of projects nationwide. From small scale interior renovations to large scale tower additions and vertical expansions. JJ has worked with countless contractors and healthcare systems through very challenging scopes of work. As a by-product of that 20 plus years of experience, JJ founded The Construction Infection Control Training Institute to provide formalized ICRA education and certification to contractors, design firms and hospital staff. CICTI conducts many courses nationwide either onsite or web-based. To date, CICTI has trained and certified thousands of people nationwide in hopes of facilitating a safer environment of care during construction, maintenance and emergency response scenarios.

Terry Lively | Marsh & McLennan Agency – Sioux Falls, SD
As an Employer Services Safety & Compliance Manager, Terry Lively has over 30 years’ experience in safety, compliance and risk management, and insurance loss control. He has worked in a variety of industries including large fleet transportation, chemical manufacturing, construction, full service agricultural businesses, and has led a carrier loss control team. He has expertise in OSHA, EPA & DOT. Terry is a member of the Society for Human Resource Managers and is a member of the Iowa and South Dakota Ag Cooperative Safety Directors Association which he helped found and organize, along with being one of the founding members of the Minnesota association of the same name. Terry holds the Certified Safety Supervisor and Certified Director of Safety designations from the North American Transportation Management Institute along with several other safety specific certifications.
Diana McCartney | MFA Incorporated – Columbia, MO
Diana is the Safety Coordinator for MFA Incorporated, a farm cooperative located in Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas and Kansas. Their central office is located in Columbia, Missouri. Diana is responsible for safety in MFA’s 150 retail locations, wholesale warehouses and manufacturing feed mills. With 35 years at MFA, Diana has utilized many types of safety training and programs. In 2015, MFA embarked on an employee driven Behavior Based Safety Program they called SHIELD, (Safe Habits Improve Employees Lives Daily). It has been a very successful program for MFA, empowering their employees to speak up about safety and have safety conversations with each other. Diana is passionate about their journey in BBS because for MFA, it has been a huge transformation.

Kurt Miene | Stockton Towing – Sioux City, IA
Kurt has over 30 years of experience in law enforcement in the state of Iowa, 22 of which was spent serving as a DOT Vehicle Enforcement Officer. In his role with DOT, Kurt dedicated his career to ensuring safe vehicle operations not only by roadside inspections but also as an outreach trainer. Kurt has also dedicated over 30 years as a volunteer fire fighter and Certified EMT most recently serving the Lawton, Iowa community.

Joe has over a decade of experience in safety and organizational reliability supporting organizations in varying sizes and industries primarily through a lead consultant and director role with large international consulting firms as well as regional firms. Joe has extensive experience in enhancing organizations performance through leadership development, Safety Management Systems, regulatory compliance, predictive analytics, conflict resolution, strategic & operational planning and personnel management. Joe has supported his previous customers through hazard recognition coaching, safety committee development, Behavior Based Safety implementation, support and data analysis. Joe has a passion for assisting organization in their pursuit of safety excellence by identifying and mitigating the most dangerous risk and hazards that leads to a severe incident and fatality potential (SIF). John Olson | Physical Capacity Profile – Salina, KS
John Olson, Exercise Physiologist, received his Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Kansas State University in 1987. He attended the University of Nevada -Las Vegas for graduate studies. From 1987 to 1993, his work background included rehabilitation, cardiac rehab, work hardening and work conditioning. From 1993 until present, he has been employed at Occupational Performance Corporation and has focused on Physical Capacity Profile® testing and its development. He directs the company’s hardware and software development. John has performed consulting services with Fortune 500 companies in the area of job analysis and ergonomics. He has presented and co-presented at the state and national level on the topics of safety, workers’ compensation, and health. John has co-authored articles in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine and in the journal Work.

Jamie Papian | Iowa Lead and Asbestos Safety – Johnston, IA
Jamie is the owner and primary training provider at Iowa Lead & Asbestos Safety; a private, statewide company that provides EPA, OSHA and State required training for lead and asbestos professionals as well as inspections, consultation and project management services. His background includes 25 years in the commercial and residential construction industry, and 10 years with Iowa Lead & Asbestos Safety. Jamie is a licensed Lead, Asbestos and HUD Housing inspector, Lead Abatement Contractor, Asbestos Supervisor and Management Planner. He is also an accredited indoor environmentalist for Alliance Environmental Services (an affiliate of Iowa Lead & Asbestos Safety) where he performs environmental testing, lab analysis, and consultation for issues relating to lead, asbestos, water damage and indoor air quality.

Mark Pierson | UFG Insurance – Cedar Rapids, IA
Mark joined UFG in 2017. He is a native Iowan who began his risk control career in 1982. His professional assignments include work with various types and sizes of clients in the areas of construction, mining, manufacturing and agriculture. Mark assists clients in analyzing, planning, implementing, measuring and modifying their risk control systems to attain peak performance. He is considered an expert in traditional and behavior-based safety technologies. Mark has developed and delivered safety education sessions for senior management, field/line management and hourly personnel. He embraces a coaching, mentoring and never-stop-sharing approach towards risk control. Mark has a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education and Occupational Safety from Iowa State University. He has been a board-certified safety professional for over 30 years. With over forty years of commercial and industrial experience and a degree in Construction Management, Daniel brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and certifications to his seminars.

Bill Speth, Brockway Mechanical & Roofing, Inc. – Burlington, IA
Bill has been in the commercial construction industry for over 30 years and is a journeyman electrician by trade and has taught electrical apprenticeship classes for over 20 years. In 2000 Bill got involved in the safety side of the business and as an OSHA 502 Instructor has taught hundreds of classes including OSHA 10 and 30 Hour. In addition, Bill also carries numerous other certifications including First AID/CPR, Boom / Scissor / MEWP, Forklift Operator, Rigger / Signal Person, and Arc Flash 70E. Early in his safety career, Bill had the opportunity through a Susan Harwood Grant to go to Washington D.C. to help write presentations for the Federal OSHA web site.

Mike Whitsell, West Des Moines Fire Department – West Des Moines, IA
Mike has dedicated over 30 years to life saving efforts including reviewing building plans for all new and remodeled commercial construction, serving on the Housing Review Committee, and being responsible for all fire investigations and supervising fire investigators. In addition, Mike is responsible for promoting fire safety throughout the city, supervising career firefighters, and inspecting all commercial businesses, schools, daycare centers, nursing homes, and group homes, for appropriate fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and fire extinguishers.

Mark has worked in the Safety / Risk Management field for over 25 years, with degrees from DMACC and William Penn University. He has worked in the construction industry for the last 18 years with additional experience in manufacturing, chemical, meat processing and military. He specializes in behavior-based safety identifying exposures in employee training and unsafe behaviors. Mark is certified as a Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST), as well as an Agribusiness and Farm Insurance Specialist (AFIS).
