It was in India that the technique Affandi had had to "forget" was further developed. This "delay" did not seem to present a problem to him; he did not, after all, have to start from zero. Also, the reasons for his liking the squeezing technique seem to have been becoming clearer to him. First, he had felt that it was the solution when he discovered that the conventional technique took up too much time, causing the act of painting to drag behind the emotional experience - or what, at another time, Affandi called his "stimuli". Second, in addition to the fact that the squeezing technique could keep abreast with the movement of his emotion, he also felt that this technique could produce an effect that was different from the one made by brush. Third, the squeezing technique shortened the physical distance between hand and canvas compared to when the hand connected with the canvas via the brus. And fourth, and this may have been the most compelling attraction to him: the squeezing technique caused his painting to, in essence, be formed by lines. On his travels, Affandi liked to draw unique objects and sceners of life. This present lot is one of Affandi's paintings dated in 1951 using medium of oil on canvas. The painting expresses Affandi's time India, a place he said was a malicious place. Affandi shows this by using dark, intense and gripping colors MASTERPIECE ONLINE AUCTION

Sunaryo "Born in Banyumas, Central Java, 1943. Sunaryo studied at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) majoring Art Department in 1969 and continued to study marble carving for 7 months at Carrara, Italy in 1975. Then he joined the Decenta group which was reacting against the more traditional ""Bandung school"" that had pioneered abstract art and was viewed generally as more Westernized than other schools of thought at the time. Artists in Decenta were trying to reprocess the visual elements of Indonesia's traditional arts in search of ""local colour and their cultural roots,"" Sunaryo recalled. Sunaryo theme of Balinese Dancer are most desirable by the art connoisseurs. Back in the 1980s, Sunaryo es tablished himself with his lyrical paintings of Indonesian themes, such as Balinese dancers that often incorporat ing with traditional art forms and motifs. But over the last 10 years, his works had become much more politically conscious. The dancer series often expressed his social and environmental concerns and issues like ""the tension of tradition and modernity"" or political issues through symbolization of colors. Abstract or figurative, his work has always been known for its formal strength and inventiveness, but his work has also always been about social, environmental and spiritual issues, and goals." Adrien Jean Le Mayeur De Merpres

Born in Brussels (Belgium), on 9 February 1880, in the nobility and linked with the Belgium royal family, he was the son of a painter. Adrien was very keen on becoming a painter himself, but his father insisted that he should complete his studies first. He graduated as a civil engineer (architect), but soon after devoted himself to painting. Le Mayeur’s works were executed with freeflowing and bold, strong strokes, in bright and gay colours. His works, be they sketches done in light colours or bright-coloured oil paints, showed that they were inspired by the brilliant and clear tropical sunlight. His subjects of paintings are Belgian Landscapes, Scenes of Asia and Africa, Balinese Genre, Figures and Nudes. He painted sunny landscapes in impressionist style, but most navies along the Belgian coast. Some of Le Mayeur’s early works are impressionist paintings from his travels in Africa, India, the Mediterranean and the South Pacific. After painting Belgian landscapes for more than a decade, he served as an army painter during WW I and also took battlefield photographs. After the war, seeking solace in travel, he made trips to the south of France, Morocco, Tunisia, Madagascar, India, and Cambodia. Le Mayeur’s works from this period already display a tendency towards Orientalist and exotic subject matter. He then visited Tahiti and French Polynesia with the intention of being like Paul Gauguin; a European exploring and capturing the primitive beauty of Polynesian culture. After being generally disappointed by Polynesia -- which he found in decline and tainted by colonialism -- he moved on. Le Mayeur was 52 years old in 1933 when he arrived in north of Bali at Singaraja in the Buleleng province. Since the 1920s Bali had gained a reputation as a destination for avant-garde artists including the German Walter Spies and the Dutchman Rudolf Bonnet. The island’s stunning landscapes, relaxed lifestyle and liberal sexual mores made it a paradise for European expatriates. Paintings from his early period in Bali are romantic depictions of daily life and beautiful Balinese women – often Ni Polok. The works from the 1950s are displaying the vibrant colours that later became popular with young Balinese artists. MASTERPIECE ONLINE AUCTION

Basoeki Abdullah started painting since he was 5 years old in simple drawing, and at 10 he traveled to Surabaya and Bali where he started portrait painting. During 1933, he held his first exhibition in Bandung. He brought his painting to RMP. Sosrokartono, RA. Kartini’s brother, who was very impressed on Basoeki’s painting. Sosrokartono and Prince of Mangkunegoro VII became the person who greatly supported his painting career until Basoeki become a famous painter. During that time he continued his study at Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in the Hague, the Netherlands. Basoeki Abdullah is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in portrait paintings. The late artist was well-known for his realistic paintings. Besides painting of natural beauty and sensuous landscape, he is also noted for his portraits of beautiful women, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. His great fond of paintings women’s figure perhaps derived from his great interest in exploring the beauty of women that is attractive to paint in any way. The artist gain the public recognition after winning a painting competition held in conjunction with the Netherland's Queen Juliana ascension to throne on 6 September 1948.There are painters who like to paint nudity. ity in art has generally reflected — with some exceptions — social standards of aesthetics and modesty/morality of their time in painting, sculpture and more recently in photography. At all times in human history, the human body has been one of the principal subjects for artists. It has been represented on prehistoric paintings and statutes and in all eras since. The male nude was more common in antiquity, especially in ancient Greece, but today the tendency is for the female nude body to be more highly regarded and represented. " 26

S. Sudjojono "Sudjojono was a prolific artist and writer. His artistic oeuvre covers a wide spectrum, from paintings, sketches, drawings, public art and reliefs as well as ceramic works. His style and artistic preoccupation were also diverse, from his early and monumental works, which significantly reflect on the true spirit of In donesia and the people during the war and their struggle against independence; to landscapes; still-lifes; portraits and renditions of his more personal life and family at later years. S. Sudjojono paintings often derived from his fantasy and memory he person ally experienced. He often put joyful humor as a cloak over his painting. It’s an image that sometimes gets into his works because humor was always passing by his life. Because of his sense of humor, his works tends to trigger a smile or laughter if not poetic, sentimental, emotional or heroic. His works often come to us in caricature spirit. He used a combination of fantasy and memory to create his surrealistic landscapes. Sometimes, he incorporated elements derived from places that he had seen in books or actually visited. S. Sudjojono paintings have a typical harsh and wild strokes as if the paint has been poured directly onto canvas. His observation of his surroundings seemed spontaneous, as though they were snapshots of views that appealed to him" 30

Due to his extensive art studies, Mochtar Apin became proficient in a variety of techniques. With such knowledge, he was well equipped to debate on the role of art in Indonesia. In the Indonesian art world, Mochtar Apin’s diverse range of interests and unique versatility in style has left behind an artistic legacy that has held the interest of art connoisseurs to this day. Mochtar Apin’s naked painting presents paradox to apply the concept of representations. He does not represent reality for conclusion like in the work of landscape and realism. His return of representation exactly deconstructs the concept of representation. All his nude figures in his paintings did mean that he directly bring the model to the location. His nude figure was not a representation at all, in fact, it is only Apin’s imaginary. It is unlikely the culture for Indonesian women posing half naked in public. The reality in the picture is none other than the imaginary reality." MASTERPIECE ONLINE AUCTION

Popo Iskandar

Popo Iskandar started painting using cats object in the early 1960s which then developed into leopards in early 1980s. Repetitive theme of cats, chickens and leopards probably has become Popo Iskandar’s main contemplation in reflecting the essence of cats, nudity or even mystery of nature. The source of his idea of cats is not the form of the cat, but rather its involvement in various situations and conditions which stimulate his ideas and imaginations. In painting a cat, he feels that he doesn’t only present it physically, but that he tries to express the meaning and the impression of the cat’s appearance for him. So, a cat for him is a totality of inspired understanding, an integrated understanding of music and poetry. Popo’s leopards strongly express smooth line as if the flow of the music. As in cats, leopards figure often shown alone or in groups. Therefore, we often see a leopard’s or cat’s face with many bodies. The moon at the background can be a symbolic shape that was not reflects the actual mean (moon, balloon or sun), but only as a circle of compositor element. The circle often used to give strong impression that surrounds the object mystery or only as the rhyme balancing. But, sometimes it was only like a dot in a sentence, as idea synchronizing. . MASTERPIECE ONLINE AUCTION 37

Handrio

Handrio was born in 1926 in Purwakarta. He started his painting career by studying with Basuki Abdullah. Furthermore, during the Japanese period, he studied with Sudjojono and Agus Djaja at Keimin Bunka Shidoso and Poetera in Jakarta. At first, Handrio's paintings were in the style of realism and Surrealism. In the 1950s Handrio has shifted to a semi-abstract style, which is analytically breaking down shapes in the geometric plane. This style was a different expression from the Yogyakarta painters at that time who generally painted populist themes from realism to expressionism and decorative styles. In this semi-abstract style, he analyzes many forms of still life objects and musical instruments. In its development in the late 1960s, these forms disappeared into dynamic and complex geometric spaces. The peak of Handrio's abstract style achievement occurred in the 1980s. The space, field, and color in his paintings represent the characterization of the construction of the elements themselves. In this expression, what is present is dynamics, rhythm, complexity, robustness, balance, or other images. 70
