107 Dzulkifli Buyong (Kuala Lumpur 1948 - 2004) Cat and Insects, 1991 Oil on canvas: 61 x 81 cm Signed, lower right: DB 1991 Documented in The Malaysianess of Malaysian Art: The Question of Identity, published by Balai Seni Lukis Negara MYR 35,000 - 80,000 USD 11,290 - 25,806 In 1991, National Art Gallery Malaysia (Balai Seni Lukis Malaysia) featured a special group exhibition, entitled “Soal Identity” (Question of Identity) to call on the local artists in expressing “Malaysianess”. There were 165 works submitted by artists with different races including Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal, Latif Mohidin, Redza Piyadasa, Dato’ Mohd. Najib, Chung Chen Sun and Yeoh Jin Leng. To question about identity, Dv Buyong submitted two works including the current work – Cat and Insects (1991). This is an interesting piece of conceptual work of Buyong presented in an engaging way. His exploration of national identity is a thought provoking one. A black cat is placed at the centre of the painting scrutinizing a huge red tree with five roots reaching out along the ground. Five other trees, in different sizes, are juxtaposed to each other standing as background. Green bushes are painted filling the gaps in between. Five sizeable fallen leaves are sporadically painted surrounding the tree. What is the most interesting in the painting is the inclusion of the black ant and termites. They swarm towards the red tree that stood steadily in the central. They seem slowly invading the tree. It seems like Buyong has a special preference for five as same number is recurring in the painting. This preference may have a strong relation to the core discussion of the exhibition about national identity. To mark the anniversary of Malaysian independence on 31 August 1970, a national philosophy – Rukun Negara – was instituted by National Consultative Council. This was introduced in reaction to a serious race riot known as the May 13 Incident which occurred in 1969 that undermines national unity. Malaysian racial balance and stability was very fragile in all its existence. Soon after, the Malaysian government sought ways to foster unity among the various races in Malaysia. In acknowledging the complexities of national identity, one of the methods was to encourage unity through the Rukun Negara. The five Rukun Negara are: Believe in God, Loyalty to King and Country, Upholding the Constitution, Rules of Law and Courtesy and Morality. Thereafter, the New Economic Policy (1971-1990) was launched in 1971 with the very aim to create unity among the various races in Malaysia, through economic equality, via the reduction of the economic gap among the races in Malaysia. In 1991, the same year where the Soal Identity exhibition was held, a new National Development Policy (Dasar Pembagunan Negara) was introduced to supersede the old one. Concerning perception of the political and social issues of the time, Buyong has created a surprising visual quality that gives expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the visual arts to the subject of the discussion about national identity. The selection of ‘five’ in his painting seem like an obvious clue of Buyong in embracing the harmony and unity that has been through after 20 years of racial congruence. While the tree signifies national unity, the presence of ants and termite on the tree seems to suggest the potential danger of racial destruction if immediate resolution is oversight. The cat stands as a spectator who contemplates the narrative as a whole visual expression – a work of art. It is definitely a playful dream-like painting. His play of colours, emotions and the moment with the way different forms relate to each other and the way they are put into space are of exceptional. The current work is documented in the book Kemalaysiaan Senilukis Malaysia: Soal Identity (1991). In 1997, Christie’s borrowed Buyong’s painting for one of their exhibitions.Born in 1948, Kuala Lumpur. Dzulkifli Buyong is one of the well-known artists. He received his art education at the Victoria Institution from 1961 to 1965, studying under Patrick Ng Kah Oon. He was a regular member of the Wednesday Art Group that formed in 1952 in Kuala Lumpur. It was an important local art cradle of that time. Among the contemporaries includes Syed Ahmad Jamal and Peter Harris. Dzulkifli Buyong had won many competitions since young age. At the age of 16, Buyong won numerous awards including a gold medal from the Queen , Tengku Ismail Tengku Budriah and first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al –Haj. At 19, he had been given chances to exhibits his work of art to public. The current piece is an interesting piece of Ismadi. The meaning of the painting is not immediately clear to the viewer. The painting is glutted with distorted human figures and animals. Strong use of colours and geometric lines are inspired by cubism style. A careful reading of the painting reveals the Japanese occupation of Malaya in 1941. Ismadi wittily titled the current work as “Antara Guernica dan Malaya” – a parody of the famous work of Picasso on the war in Spain. The instability situation in Malaysia is reflected through the chaotic representation of the entire composition. Born in 1971, Raub. Graduated from UiTM, Kuala Lumpur, he also had obtained his Masters degree at De Monfort University, UK. Ismadi is a prolific artist who actively participates in exhibitions. The recent solo show, Arjuna Series 10 in Museum of Asian art in University Malaya was a great success. Decorative style is a style that allows wide range of expression. It almost has no rule. It is possible to paint a human body without minding the real proportion or the anatomy. One could also create a non figurative item without specification. It is also possible to put aside perspective and spatial volume. The only thing demanded is that the painter should explore and improvise lines and formation of strong colors. In principle, the style of decorative art is an effort to present patterns of lines, colors and textures that can express ideas with high ornamental element. Its basic principle of work is repetition of lines, dots, colors or basic shapes till they formed a (sometimes) rhythmic and consistent pattern.

Regarding his themes, he preferred things very close to him. His life went through many changes (in space) – from a village to metropolitan city of Jakarta. This brought him experience and inspiration. His themes were taken from what he had witnessed, listened and felt. His different (life) experiences became his themes. He varied his themes of paintings into; 1) Daily activities, 2) Mythology and 3) Mask. The present lot was one of his daily activities themes. This theme is expressed in paintings with simple compositions. They often depict subjects of human’s activities without showing their time and space. Here, he tries to show the intimacy of human relationships. His paintings are so attractive as they are done with decorative style full of ornamental patterns.

Lee Man Fong Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-fong style”. Lee Man Fong is famous painter who captures gold fishes in magnificent way. Some gold fishes are swimming freely in the space of an aquarium, still with his essential element by using the light, reflecting the sun’s radiance, Lee success to bring all the goldfishes as a depiction of calmness. In Lee Man Fong paintings, light is of prime importance and the subjects are consistently bathed in a luminous glow as presented in this lot. The background, unlike the flat, void spaces of Chinese paintings, is likewise illuminated by an almost mysterious glow of white sunlight. Therefore the subjects, reflecting the sun’s radiance, seem also to be lit from the back, creating the effect of “glowing silhouettes”. He became famous since his oil study on formalism, cubism, and expressive abstraction. Chen's mastery in depicting human figures was also found in keen observation of nature and animals. His subjects include landscapes, figures, birds and animals, still life studies and abstract compositions. Chen was especially adept at drawing egrets, monkeys and birds.

Born in 1906, Guangdong (China). Wen Hsi was an artist, an academician and a gallerist. He studied art at the Shanghai College of Art in 1928. Wen Hsi settled down in Singapore at 1948 and became an art teacher at The Chinese High School and taught there from 1949 to 1968, concurrently teaching art at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1951 to 1959. As a passionate art educator he had greatly influenced many of Singapore’s early Chinese artists. Wen Hsi was a great observant of nature. Almost everything can be the master’s inspiration to create exciting work namely, landscapes, human figures and animals. Chen's great interest in observing his surroundings were found in depicting the nature and animal objects. He produced landscapes, figures, birds and animals, still life studies and abstract compositions. Chen was especially adept at drawing egrets and monkeys. Among all the animal paintings by him, Chen's gibbon paintings stand out, as they were noted by Chen's attention to detail and sensitive rendering of the beautiful creatures. His first inspiration from painting gibbons came from a reproduction of a gibbon painting that formed the right triptych of the famous painting, White Robed Guanyin, Crane and Gibbon by the 13th century Southern Song Dynasty Chinese artist Mu Xi. Awed by its lifelike quality, he was convinced with Mu Xi's great skill in close observation of the gibbons. So day and night, Chen studied Mu Xi's print and emulated the painting. Chen had never seen a gibbon when he was in China, and as a result he did not realize that gibbons, unlike monkeys, had no tails. It was only much later in the late-1940s, that a foreigner pointed out his error in his painting, and corrected him. Later on he continued to study the creature's postures and its characteristics, by rearing it in his home garden. Chen Wen Hsi Chinese color on paper illustrates a dimension of great complexity and freshness of Chen’s ink and brush. Masterpiece Fine Art Auction
